Jocelyn had been against the whole idea of Isobel and Clary going shopping together but she also knew that it would be good to get her out of the ‘house’ as the teenagers all called it. Jace was being quiet and withdrawn from Clary, Magnus had been in and out and Simon was too busy with his girlfriend and hardly spoke to her. Isobel was the only female around her age and she was offering to bring Clary out for the afternoon. So, Jocelyn watched her daughter from the library window, Clary was invisible to the mundane world and was careful not to bump anyone accidently. She felt rather than saw Luke standing near her also watching Clary make her way over the sidewalk and out of sight.
“I have someone already at the mall watching them from a distance” He told her “Though if she finds out…” He let it trail off as they both knew how angry she would be.
“I know” Jocelyn answered “She will never forgive me. It’s been two weeks and she still isn’t happy about the sex talk I tried to give her…I just don’t know what to do about her anymore, we used to be so close and now”
“Now” Luke continued “She is an adult and is trying desperately to find herself”
“I hate it” Jocelyn muttered more to herself.
“I still can’t believe that you’re allowing Isobel to help her buy new clothes” Luke said with a laugh “Have you actually seen the way that girl dresses?”
“If I told her no she would have freaked out” The stressed woman answered “Or she would have thought that I was trying to ‘mother’ her too much and done something worse than buy some revealing clothing” She ran her hand through her thick red hair “Plus, she may be a new adult trying to find herself but I highly doubt that suddenly means that she’s going to start dressing like a whore”
~~~//~~~
Clary stood in the back of the dark store with Isobel pawing through the clothes rack and throwing stuff in to her awaiting arms. While Izzy tended to dress like she was a minute away from attending a job standing on the corner she did have decent taste. She knew what colors would go best with Clary’s red hair, what would make her eyes pop, skin glow, what would make her look hippy, fat or perfectly shaped. When her arms were so full she was sure that they were going to give out the other girl shoved her in to the dressing room and sat on one of the many benches and filed her nails. Clary looked at the first thing she picked up and sighed, she wasn’t sure if it was a shirt or a really short dress but she did know that it was going to be a long day of undressing and redressing.
“I can’t believe we just spent that much” Clary exclaimed two hours later as they finally left the store and was heading over to grab an iced latte before going back to the Institute.
“It’s nothing” Isobel answered “Just pocket change”
“I still feel odd about spending that much” Clary grinned “But it is nice to do something other than train, study and avoid Jace”
“He is being a complete jerk” Izzy said sympathetically “I thought that maybe he was becoming normal and then…well, I don’t need to tell you how’s been acting”
“Yeah” Clary snorted “So, how’s your love life?”
“Since Simon?” She laughed “Normal. I’m seeing a Fay, he’s really sweet though I really don’t think its serious, at least not for me…I can’t find love like Alec has”
“You think Alec’s in love with Magnus?” Clary asked, even though she told herself numerous times over the past few weeks that she hated the Warlock she couldn’t help but be interested in his love life.
“Sometimes” Izzy answered as they started their long walk back to the Institute “But then again…well, keep this to yourself but he’s been going on some dates that our parents have been setting him up on” She frowned slightly “With females”
“Why?” Clary asked “Hasn’t he told them that he’s gay…haven’t they noticed that he’s with Magnus all the time?”
“He hasn’t told them” Izzy answered “In the shadow hunter world it’s not something that’s okay. He’s the eldest and a male, it’s his duty to marry a female shadow hunter of our parents choosing and produce many more little shadow hunters” She shot her a sideways look “Didn’t you ever wonder why my parents don’t give a shit about who I date and they’ll care less who I marry”
“But wouldn’t it be just as great if you married a good shadow hunter male and produce shadow hunter babies?” Clary asked, she was worried if maybe her own parents were getting ready to marry her.
“Yes” She answered sadly “But all the shadow hunter families know that I’m a free spirit and therefor don’t want to tie themselves to me” She grinned evilly “I did that on purpose”
“I don’t blame you” Clary said as they turned in to the Institutes front walkway “I would do it too”
“But you are lucky and don’t have to” Izzy said “Your mother actually has your best interest at heart. My parents tried to convince your mother that you and Alec would make a good match and that your shadow hunter children would be extremely strong but your mother told my mother that she wanted you to have a chance to get married for love”
“That was decent of her” Clary answered though she felt that if her mother truly felt that way she wouldn’t be as judgmental about Magnus.
“Yep” Izzy said as she walked in to the front hallway “After my brother is married to some girl they’ll move on to Jace and you can bet my mother’s going to ask your mother if the two of you can date with the hope of getting married”
“Wonderful” Clary said with false cheeriness and rolled her eyes at the other girl who laughed “How long until Alec gets engaged to one?”
“Seeing as he doesn’t actually like women” Isobel answered in a low voice “I’d say that he’ll hold out until he meets a woman that my mother is positively raving about and marry her so as to keep mother happy”
“Great” She said “So anywhere from one week to two years?”
“Exactly” She answered.
After putting her clothes away Clary sat herself down in front of her vanity mirror and brushed her hair back in to a bun. She dressed in a pair of sweat pants and a tank top and made her way to the gym where she worked out. She was confused about what to do, Magnus really liked (maybe even loved) Alec and Alec was basically cheating on him. As a normal human being she wanted to help him, to tell him about what she had learned but then again it wasn’t her place and she didn’t want him to think that she was jealous or trying to break them up. With one last hard kick Clary stopped her training and looked up to find her mother watching her with a smile on her face.
“You seem to like the physical part of your training” Jocelyn pointed out.
“I like the book work too” Clary said as she wiped a towel across her forehead “But I can think better when I’m working out”
“Now don’t you feel bad about making jokes about my always going for runs?” She asked.
“Nope” She answered with a laugh and bumped her mothers arm as she walked past her “Let’s get something to eat, is anyone else here?”
“Isobel went out on a date” Jocelyn answered “I don’t know where Jace is but Alec is out with his parents”
“Oh” She said “That’s good…”
“What’s bothering you?” Jocelyn asked as they entered the kitchen and she started to cook for the two of them “I can always tell”
“Mom” She faltered “I just…what would you do if you learned something about someone and what you learned will eventually hurt someone else?”
“Honestly” Jocelyn said after a moment of thinking “I would have to know if someone would get hurt”
“Someone will” Clary said passionately “But there’s more than what I said”
“And what is it?” She pressed.
“I don’t think the person who’s going to be hurt trusts me” Clary said “And I don’t know what else to do”
“Can you tell me what’s going on?” Jocelyn asked.
“I know what Alec’s doing with his parents tonight” Clary said “He’s going on dates…with girls, even though he claims he’s dating Magnus”
“Well don’t you think it would be a little hypocritical of Magnus to be upset with him for cheating when just two weeks ago he was playing tonsil hockey with you?” Jocelyn asked.
“I knew you wouldn’t get it” Clary snapped and started to walk away but her mother called out to her.
“Clary” She said with a sigh “You’re afraid that if you tell Magnus he’s going to think that you’re jealous?”
“Or wanting to break them up” Clary sighed “Magnus has been amazing with helping us and he’s a good guy who doesn’t deserve to be hurt like this, I think I should say something but it’s not really my place”
“But do you want it to be your place?” Her mother asked “Do you want to be with Magnus?”
“No!” She snapped “I mean…just…I don’t know” She stared at her mother as if trying to figure something out “You know that I’ve never been in this situation before, can’t you just tell me what to do?”
“If I do you’re going to hate the answer” Jocelyn pointed out “But first, answer something for me and answer it honestly”
“Okay” Clary said as she sat down once again on the stool she’d previously vacated.
“I want you to fully think about Magnus” Jocelyn said softly “I want you to think about how you felt around him before two weeks ago and tell me about those feelings”
“Okay” Clary thought back to how she had felt about him before the kiss “I was scared of him at first though not because he was a Warlock or because of his eyes, I thought his eyes were beautiful actually, but it was because he took my memories and on top of that with all the shit Jace was telling me about downworlders…well can you blame me?”
“Not really” Jocelyn smiled “What else?”
“When he was in the room with me I was aware of him” Clary answered “He’s so powerful I can feel his magic, when he’d speak to me he was mesmerizing and I found myself…almost in a trance…why are you asking this?”
“Tell me about how you’ve felt since the kiss?” Her mother ignored her question.
“I think about him more than usual” Clary answered rolling her eyes “Compare his kiss to that of any other one I’ve had, I’m always aware of him when he’s here and I’ve gotten a little better at reading his expressions…I’ll be the first to admit that I have a bit of a crush, okay?” She frowned “Why the questions?”
“Do you know why Luke stayed so close to me throughout the years?” Jocelyn asked as she shut off the stove and sat down near her daughter.
“I thought that he loved you before I learned about the shadow world and after learning about it I figured it was because he wanted to protect us, is that not true?”
“It is” The older woman nodded “However, its because of a bond. The way you described Magnus before and after the kiss is how I felt…feel with Luke and we are bonded”
“You think I have a bond with Magnus…and you’re okay with it?” Clary asked.
“No” She answered “Not really. I would prefer that you find a boyfriend/husband the old fashion way but…having a bond with someone isn’t a bad thing”
“Then why didn’t you and Luke get together right away?” Clary shot at her.
“Because I allowed myself to be treated the way the girls that Alec is dating are treated by their parents” Jocelyn answered “I believed that downworlders were beneath me, that some were good but most weren’t and that a marriage to one would be…horrible” She stared at her hands for a long few minutes “I know how disgusting it is now, Clary, I do. But I was a teenager, eighteen just like you, and I had only been raised to view downworlders as second class”
“If that’s true” Clary said “Then why were you such a bitch about Magnus and I?”
“Because” Her mother answered “That had nothing to do with the downworlder/shadow hunter thing. That was a man that is…well, in the mundane world let’s look at it as you coming home with a forty year old boyfriend with you only eighteen years old. It’s not something that a mother is okay with and if you think that I’m horrified about it you can bet that Luke isn’t happy”
“Did you tell him?” Clary asked in a small voice.
“I didn’t need to” She answered “He can tell”
A week later Jocelyn was sitting with Clary in her room talking to her calmly and helping her meditate. Clary had her eyes closed and was concentrating on the cat-eyed Warlock that held her interest over the last few days. Jocelyn watched her closely and held her breath but nothing was happening which made her sigh in relief. If there was a bond between the downworlder and Clary a green light (green was Magnus’s signature color) would appear around her while she was concentrating on connecting to him. She had explained that to Clary and had even shown her by connecting to Luke, the brownish-green light appeared around her and then the werewolf had shown up immediately.
“Is anything happening?” Clary asked, breaking the silence after a few minutes of supposed meditation and Jocelyn saw her open one eye.
“Clary” She sighed “You are supposed to be meditating and concentrating on Magnus not…whatever it is you’re doing”
“I don’t understand!” She dropped back to the bed and closed her eyes “What do I do?”
“When I’m concentrating on Luke” Jocelyn explained “I picture the thing about him that attracted me to him first and then I build him from there. I picture is face, body, hair and features, then I build up his personality and what it is that I want, which is to connect with him or converse with him”
“Okay” Clary said again and closed her eyes.
While she laid on her bed she allowed her thoughts not to stop but to become pointed at one person instead of everyone. Instead of seeing the blackness of nothing, she started seeing a beautiful green which got smaller and smaller until it was no longer the back drop but eyes looking at her. Cat’s eyes to be exact. They glittered and locked on to hers, then she pictured his face, the shape of his face, his neck, shoulders, chest, stomach and legs. She could see his spiky blue streaked black hair and the left side of his lips quirked up in that know-it-all smirk that was both attractive and infuriating. She knew that she wanted to connect with him but she wasn’t sure what it was that she wanted to do. She wanted to see him, as he was at that moment and she wanted to see what he was doing at that moment. Her mind reached out to him and instead of merely looking at his face she could see Magnus moving around the loft that was home working with different things that could be spells.
‘Magnus’ Clary called it out loud and clear but she knew that her mouth had never moved and her mother in her bedroom didn’t hear it ‘Can you hear me?’
She saw him turn around suddenly and look around his room. The moment of panic left his eyes and they went back to their normal cat appearance and he grabbed his jacket before leaving what he was doing and his loft altogether. Clary’s eyes snapped open and she looked around the room wildly, it wasn’t only her mother standing there but Luke as well and both of their eyes were nearly popping out of their heads. She looked from one shocked face to the other and back again, even though Luke was shocked he was smiling slightly and shrugged at Jocelyn when she looked at him. Whatever it was they had seen it apparently wasn’t what they had been expecting.
“Don’t tell me that it didn’t work because…” Clary started but Jocelyn shook her head.
“No, no” She said “Sweetie, that was amazing. You really connected with him, the color around you was almost blinding…did you try to speak to him?”
“Yes” Clary answered, while she was happy that her mother wasn’t angry she felt a little like she had whiplash from how back and forth the older woman’s moods changed “I think he heard me. He looked around and was clearly shocked and then he left I think he’s coming here”
“That’s extraordinary” Jocelyn said “Luke and I couldn’t communicate for about four months and until then all we could really do was see one another”
“When I connect to him” Clary said “Will there always be a light?”
“You don’t want Jace, Izzy and the others to know” Luke guessed and she rolled her eyes at him.
“Of course not” She answered.
“There’s a rune” Jocelyn said “I’ll teach it to you, it’s something of my own making that will hide all your personal thoughts, feelings and expressions except…”
“Except” Luke picked up smoothly “From the one you’re bonded to”
“So when you’re giving me the third degree” Clary said “Even when it bothers you…?”
“You would never know” Jocelyn answered “It’s handy and honestly I think that with Jace behaving the way he has been and with the newest things with Alec…I think this rune would be smart to use on you”
“Thank you” Clary said. She was about to say more to her mother when there was a knock on her bedroom door. Luke walked over to the door and opened it slowly, he already knew who was on the other side of the door. Sure enough, Magnus stood there, his eyes instantly locked on to Clary’s and she saw his frown deepen. Serious expressions didn’t suit him in the least, she would rather see his playfulness and sneakiness than the normal serious look he had now.
“I think I need to talk to Clary, please” He said smoothly.
