Hey y'all! I'm REALLY sorry for the long delay. RL has been...shall we say, hectic? That might be an understatement. Anyway, I just haven't had a lot of time to write or focus on anything, and I've been a little unmotivated.
Now, though, I have a broken bone in my foot (what fun :P) so I'll probably have more time to write.
So Whitaker wouldn’t worry, I returned to school Monday. I was actually, dare I say it, a little more lighthearted than a week prior. Of course, I didn’t feel like talking to anyone, but I did pay more attention in class. Whitaker seemed very happy that I was back.
I tried not to look too much into it, but…
I was happy that he was happy.
By the time lunch rolled around, I was almost twitching in my seat as I waited on Whitaker. Edward noticed, but he thankfully didn’t say anything.
I relaxed when he entered the cafeteria and took the seat beside me.
“Is Lynn leaving you alone yet?” Bella asked suddenly.
“Who?” Whitaker replied. Is he really that bad with names?
As if reading my mind, Bella said, “You really are bad with names, aren’t you?”
“I told you I was. Is Lynn the blonde who’s been giving me problems?”
Bella nodded.
“Not entirely, but I’ve been able to ignore her.”
“Has someone been bothering you?” I jumped in on the conversation.
“Well…she was, but it’s not biggie.”
“What did she do?”
“It’s nothing, I sw—”
“What did she do?” I caught Bella and Edward’s stares, but I ignored them.
He sighed resignedly. “She blamed me for making you leave and gave me heck for it. It’s no big deal.”
“It is to me,” I blurted. I almost slapped myself, but he touched my hand softly and smiled.
“I swear I’m okay.” I carefully wrapped my hand around his and squeezed ever so gently, then pulled away. I felt a small wave of sadness, coupled with understanding, flow from him. I was glad he understood. I didn’t want anyone to hurt him again.
I decided to meet him by his locker at the end of the day. He didn’t protest, what with the immense happiness pouring from him.
“Where did you park?” I asked as we walked outside.
“Um…I don’t drive,” he replied, scratching the back of his neck in embarrassment. Why would he be embarrassed that he doesn’t drive? I pushed the question from my mind.
“You walk every day?”
“Yeah, my grandfather’s house isn’t far from here. I don’t mind walking.”
“Nonsense. I’ll take you home.” I walked to my car, but he didn’t follow.
“Really, Jasper, you don’t have to.”
“I want to.” And I did. I opened the passenger door of my dark blue Impala and motioned for him to slide in. He did without further argument.
It was a mostly silent drive to his house, broken only by his voice when he told me directions. His house was placed much like ours was, back from the main road and nestled in trees, though his house was still visible from the road. It was a quaint little thing, reminiscent of a log cabin from the prairie days. An older-looking man sat on the porch in a rocking chair, surreptitiously watching my car. He said his father had died… Is that his grandfather, perhaps?
“Thanks for the ride,” Whitaker broke the silence again with barely a whisper.
“Anytime,” I replied, and meant it. “I’ll be back in the morning to pick you up.”
He was surprised. “No, I can’t ask you to—” I sent him a stern glance and he shut up, acquiescing without a fight. “Fine. I’ll be waiting.” I smiled because I could feel a hint of deceit in his words. He’ll probably try to leave early. I made a mental note to arrive early just in case.
“I’ll see you then.” Some urge came over me and the southern gentleman in me lifted his hand to kiss his knuckles. A stronger concentration of the scent of his blood washed over me. The thirst burned, but it wasn’t as strong as I was used to. I’ll just have to test my resistance to his blood…but not at his expense.
His heart skipped a beat, then beat faster. I couldn’t tell if it was from fear or something else, even with my gift.
“Whitaker? What’s wrong?” I asked, concerned.
He shook his head slowly. “Sorry. I’m just a little dazed.”
“What dazed you?”
He blushed and I held my breath. “…You.”
I couldn’t help a smile, and I kissed his hand again before letting it go. “I’ll see you in the morning.”
He nodded and silently exited my car.
As I drove off, I watched Whitaker wave until I was out of sight.
I sighed. I already couldn’t wait until the next morning.
I am so screwed…
Just as I thought, Whitaker tried to leave early, even though it was raining. He was surprised to see my car in the driveway.
I rolled down the window when he tried to keep walking past me.
“Where are you going?” I asked.
“To school,” he replied nonchalantly.
“The car’s over here.”
“I know.”
“It’s raining.”
“I have a poncho.” He was crazy if he thought I was letting him walk in the rain.
“I said I would take you to school.”
“I know, but you don’t have to.” But I want to.
“You don’t need to walk in this rain, poncho or no poncho.”
“I’ll be fine.” But I want to spend time with you.
“Don’t make me get out of this car.”
He sighed and got in, though he continued to argue. “Your car’s going to be wet.”
“Good thing it’s leather, then.” I don’t care about the car.
“My grandfather says walking is good for me.” So that was his grandfather…
“Then I’ll take you on a hike one day.”
“You’re being hard-headed, you know that?”
I nodded. He wasn’t irritated with me, but I could feel some exasperation.
“Why is it so important that I not walk in the rain?”
Because you’d get sick. Because I don’t want you hurt. Because… “…I don’t know. It just is.”
“Hmm.” He didn’t say anything else on the rest of the ride.
I was antsy all morning, wanting lunch to hurry and arrive, but also wanting it not to. I was scared how much I already felt attached to Whitaker. They say it’s hard to change a vampire, but when you do, it’s forever. I could feel the change in me, and I was scared.
I was consumed by my thoughts as I passed the restroom before lunch. From inside, I could hear an angry voice yelling at someone.
“I’m going to teach you that I rule this school, and you don’t make me angry,” the angry male growled.
“Ok, Hulk.” That was Whitaker. I heard a thud, the crunch as bone and cartilage broke, and smelled a sudden rush of sweet, sweet blood. Rage rushed through me, even as Whitaker spoke again, “That’s right. Hit the downed man, you coward.”
I rushed through the door and grabbed the other boy’s raised arm. Shock and fear wrapped around me, but neither was coming from Whitaker. It took a lot of effort for me not to attack Whitaker, since he was bleeding badly, but I couldn’t do that. I couldn’t hurt him. But this boy did… He tried to hurt my Whitaker.
Wait. He’s not mine.
But I don’t want him hurt.
I forced my lips to move in more than a growl, “Leave quickly before I’m forced to defend Whitaker.”
He nodded and practically ran from the room.
The effort to control the raging monster inside me was becoming too much. I covered my nose and mouth, holding my breath, and tried again to quell the rising thirst.
“Are you all right?” I asked Whitaker softly.
“Just peachy,” he murmured, clutching his stomach as he carefully sat up.
“Where did he hit you besides your face?” I had to know so I could mediate how much pain I caused that boy.
“He punched my gut and kneed my groin.” Yep, that kid’s going down.
“I’m sorry. I was walking by and I heard—”
“It’s fine. I had him where I wanted him.” How can he joke at a time like this? Quietly, I helped him up and grabbed some paper towels. After I wet them, I carefully cleaned the blood from his face, still holding my breath. I couldn’t last much longer. The thirst scorched me.
He tried to pull away. “Hold still,” I muttered with the last bit of air in my lungs.
“I can clean myself up.” I made him lean over the sink and handed him another paper towel.
I took a quick deep breath and held it; the burn intensified, but I tried to ignore it a little longer. “Hold that over your nose and stay leaned forward. That should stop the bleeding. Then, I’ll take you to the nurse.”
“Jasper, I’m fine. I’ve been through worse.” I felt my jaw clench. So I have more people to hurt than just that boy…
Don’t you dare do anything. It’s probably all in the past. Don’t do anything rash.
I had to get out of there, get some fresh air. “I’ll be back in a minute. Stay there until you stop bleeding.” I walked out, then.
So...thoughts? Accusations for taking so long? Condemnations? Anything at all...
DBZchick--Thank you so much. :) I know it's an epic fail to go almost three months with no update... I hope you enjoyed it. :)
TheBlindQueen--Thanks to you, too. :) I'm trying.
I just noticed, when I was about to add chapter 4 that all of chapter 3 wasn't up. I'm sorry! Hopefully it shows up now.
