Call Of The Wild: Tame and Tamer
Chapter 3
What is wrong with me?
Why is it every time William and me commune he has to put us in a forest? I mean come on would it kill him to make a beach, or a nice modern room? Freaking vamps always stuck in the past.
"I heard that." William said.
We stood in front of a roaring fire, men and woman danced a long forgotten dance.
"What are they doing?" I asked.
"It is a dance of power; they are invoking the spirits for a good harvest." William said watching the people dance.
"Well not to interrupt your little siesta but what have you done to me?" I demanded.
"I have no idea what you’re talking about." he said not taking his eye's off of the dancers.
"Don't lie William you know exactly what’s going on." I said walking to stand in his line of sight.
"Seriously what?" he asked.
"Just read my mind like you usually do." I snapped I was getting sick of this game.
"I'm telling you I have no idea what your talking about." he said sounding irritated.
"Oh you know, how I have been hearing others thoughts." I said.
"What?" he asked looking stunned.
"Don't play dumb, ever since I was kidnapped when I don't pay attention I can here others thoughts."
"Explain." he said.
I told him about all the times I thought I over heard others, only now to realize I was overhearing them think. By the time I was done he had a thoughtful look on his face "Dave I swear to you I have not forced this power on you, it is rare but it has been known for a human servant to gain the power of their master. However you only have two of my marks normally you would gain my power with either the third or forth mark. But this power is...complex." he said frowning.
"Please tell me I’m not going to be shooting fire from my fingers or anything like that next....actually that sounds pretty cool."
"Sorry my ability to manipulate the elements took years of intense spiritual training that is a power only those whose magic’s are flavored toward nature can achieve. But the mind reading ability of my clan was a gift passed down through generations. My father had to earn it in order to become the new shaman of our tribe; he gave it to me too when I was still human. He wanted to see if the power could be passed down when we made others into vampires."
"So why do I have it?"
"When I gave you the second mark you gained traces to a small portion of this power. You recall I helped you tap into it that night Jen attacked you? I have a theory allow me to probe your mind."
"Uh no." I said.
"I just want to test a theory; I swear as the master of Pittsburgh I will not try anything else."
"Alright fine." I said relenting.
He grabbed my head with his hands and I felt him not in my mind but in my soul. It was like everything I was, everything I am was being observed it was like being naked in a crowded place, I didn't like it at all.
"STOP." I said jerking free.
William had a searching look on his face, his thumb and index finger were on his chin "Interesting."
"What’s interesting?" I demanded.
“Remember when we had to meld the marks in order to fight the Dragon? Well it would appear that has caused the power to activate with in you.”
When the Dragon possessed me a few weeks ago she tried to use my power to force the shifters to attack the city. Those who survived would have been turned and she would use the survivors to make her own army. William and I had to meld the marks so my chakras would be purified and I would retain control of my power.
“Activated?” I asked.
"Like I said this power is....was passed down from shaman to shaman. It is an ancient power not to be taken lightly, my father told me stories that it was given to us from another tribe from a far away land. When you became my servant the marks made a good enough connection for a small fraction to transfer into you. But you lack the necessary spiritual teachings to properly harness it. But when the Dragon entered you she used it. She forced it from me into you and when we melded the marks it caused it to be imprinted onto you. Since then it has been slowly growing stronger and stronger.”
"Am I in danger?"
"Maybe, right now you would not be able to handle it in full power. This gift doesn't read a persons mind David it reads their souls; it reads the core of who we all are. It penetrates through deception and can only see the truth, everything a person is, is laid bare in all its glory. But some things are best left unseen and better of unknown; only a select few are spiritually capable of handling the truth of the world. Others go mad or die, or both."
"Can't you just pull it out?"
"I could but it has already taken root and extracting it from you could kill you and by extension me. I can help teach you how to master it and I can delay its growth, but whether or not you have the resolve to wield this power is entirely up to you. I can help shield you from it, help lessen the effects."
"What must I do?"
"For now nothing, the power is growing but at a snails pace. But now let’s talk about your current health."
"You mean the virus?"
"Yes, this is most interesting David you are proving to be a more unique individual then I thought." He said giving me an amused look.
"Bet you’re just glad you picked me for a slave." I muttered.
"I have done nothing to warrant this hostility David." He said sternly.
"No you just force some freaky vampire marks on me!" I yelled.
"I had no other choice, now how shall we explain all this to Anita and Jean-Claude?" he asked.
"I plan on telling them about the virus, this soul-reading thing to, but I have a plan."
"Oh?"
"As you know I am supposed to be taught the ways of the other clans. And they want to use me for their own ends. Some I trust others not so much. I'm going to ask Jean-Claude, Anita, and Richard to keep this secret. That way the others won't try and hide their thoughts from me and if any of them try anything I will know."
"A sound plan, will you inform your lovers as well?"
I blushed at the thought of William knowing about my little activities with Drake and the girls. He must have read it when he scanned me.
"The soul is a book to me David." he said "Some things stick out more than others."
"Out of my head." I snapped.
"You mean out of your soul." he chuckled.
"Don't get cocky William, I may have two marks, but whether it's two or four my mind, my body, and my soul. Even my gift, it's all mine and don't think for a second I’m going to rent them out."
"So defiant Dave, you act like I’m trying to corrupt you." he said with a smile.
"You’re a vampire corruption is your bred and butter." I said.
"HA, well learned young David. But know this I only seek power to protect me and mine, and in the vampire world power is absolute."
"Even if you have to kill a few innocents to get there?" I asked.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I woke up next to Drake. I checked the clock and saw it was eleven in the morning; I had to be at work at noon. "Drake wake up" I said gently waking him up. He mumbled and rolled over, lazy bat "Drake wake up." I said more firmly shaking him a little.
He groaned and slowly got up he took one look at the clock and groaned "Why are you up at this ungodly hour?" he asked irritated.
Drake as a bat has a nocturnal sleeping pattern, lately it's been a little jumbled for him trying to get used to a normal sleeping system. "Good evening to you to sunshine, I have to get ready for work." I said.
"Why you waking me up then?" he said laying back down.
I frowned at him, "Because you have to get up to meet with Richard later to discus his pack using you cave networks." I said kissing his shoulder. I rolled on top of his straddling him beneath me "I can think of a few more interesting ways to get you up." I said huskily.
I felt him become partially erect below me. Did I mention we were both still naked?
He sat up to give me a hug and kiss "I thought you didn't like to be late for work?" he said.
"A few minutes won't kill me." I said kissing him back.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was more then a few minutes late. By the time I arrived to work it was 12:15 Jeremy was going to be pissed. I quickly put on my work clothes and clocked in Jeremy was waiting for me at my locker uh oh.
"Your late." he said his arms crossed "Care to explain why?" he asked then he took a sniff "Never mind I know why." he said with a scowl.
"Will you not do that?" I said my cheeks going red.
"Try not have sex before work." he said then he laughed "Did you forget the majority of our customers are shifters? They'll smell it on you too." he laughed again.
Shit I forgot that part "I can't go out there Jer not smelling like this." I said franticly.
"Don't worry they won't say anything." he said grinning.
"You’re enjoying this aren’t you?" I accused.
"I get my amusement were I can." he laughed.
"Ha, ha." I said walking out to begin taking orders.
My first table of the evening was to two couples, two guys and two girls, the guys where both wolves the girls were both human. Thanks to the coalition shifters were quickly becoming the new thing. Now a days instead of becoming undead people were wanting to turn furry once a month. I mean what being human isn't good enough? It's not like becoming a shifter is better or worse than being a human. It's just the chances of one seeing some scary things increase exponentially.
Everyone knew Call of the Wild was a bar and grill for Shifters, they would come in and mingle with there shifter friends let loose some of their metaphysical power that they had to restrain so much with humans. Even though there was no way to tell if someone was a shifter unless you were another shifter or psychic that didn't stop the squatters from coming and trying to see if they could figure out who was a shifter, or for the more open minded ones who would be willing to bed a human. It was always risky for a human and a shifter to mate, the shifter might loose control and shift and well you know, or get a little to rowdy and the human would need surgery to operate down there...ouch.
I knew from the way the girls were acting they were hoping to score with the guys. One of the things that attracted the shifters was the seemingly endless supply of stupid humans willing to experiment in lovemaking with a shifter, and when I mean experiment I mean well...eww.
"Hi welcome to Call of the Wild my name is David how may I take your order?" I asked pulling out my pad and pen.
I saw the faces of the guy's change into one's of recognition. They obviously knew of me that may be a bad thing. Like I said there were many shifters out there holding a grudge for me accidentally draining them of power and forcing them out of the furry closet.
"Um I’ll have a coke." the one girl said. She was a brunet with curly hair and chestnut brown eyes.
"And I’ll have a sprite." the other girl, a busty red head with green eyes.
"Ok and what can I get you guys?" I asked turning to the men.
"A coke for me." said the one.
"A Pepsi for me." said the other.
I handed their menus to them and went to go fetch their drinks. As I walked behind the bar to get the drinks I passed Ron one of my coworkers. He was a Were bear, not that you needed to be an expert on shifters to figure that out. He stood at 6'3 had his usual short cut black hair and looked like a professional wrestler. He had actually been a football player in school and college, he could have gone pro but he was attacked by a Were bear and survived. He was our cook and sometimes bouncer for those rowdy customers.
"Hey Ron." I greeted.
"Hey Dave how's it going?" he asked.
"Good, going to the Lupanar tonight to meet the pack."
"Ah that agreement you made with the clans?" he asked.
"Yeah that."
"Don't worry." he said smiling "Wolves are pushovers, wait till you come to our caves now that will be fun." he said.
"How much fun can you have in a cave?" I asked.
"You've never gone cave exploring have you?" he asked.
"No." why would I go cave exploring? I have enough trouble with the monsters above ground.
"Then that’s the first thing we're doing, you'd be surprised how much beauty can be found in caves." he said.
I walked back over to the table to get their orders. I checked my watch, only a few more hours to go before it was time for me and Jeremy to leave and head for the Lupanar.
"Are you ready to order?" I asked when I got to the table.
The guys ordered the stake extra rare; I noticed when they said extra rare they looked at the girls with a glint in there eyes reminding their groupies what they were. The girls shook a little when they did that, not in fear, more like they were excited to be reminded of who and what they were with. The girls ordered a salad, talk about irony.
"So you’re David huh?" one of the guys asked looking me up and down.
"That’s what it says on the name tag." I said. I didn't like the way he was sizing me up.
Like he thought I would be taller or meaner looking.
"You’re going to be at the Lupanar right?" the other one asked curiously.
I froze. I was surprised they were talking about pack business in front of the girls; normally wolves would be punished for over sharing.
"I guess." I said glancing at the two girls uncertainly.
"It's ok, their cool." the one said "Their wolves in the making" he said with a grin.
"What?" I asked shocked, it was illegal to give someone Lycanthropy. If it was willing that was a different matter, but to my knowledge every state had different laws about the subject.
"Are you trying to be a wolf to?" The red head said curiously. She kind of reminded me of Victoria, with her big innocent, but mischievous eyes.
"No I just...." I didn't want to over share.
"He's coming over to be acknowledged as a friend of the pack." one of the men said.
"Ohh cool." the brunet said dramatically.
"I don't think the Ulfric would appreciate outsiders knowing your secrets." I said giving the two idiots a pointed look.
"Relax we’re going to make them wolves." one of the guys said casually.
"Why on gods green earth would they want to become wolves?" I asked stumped on why someone would want to turn furry once a month.
"Because wolves are cool." the red head said simply.
"Yeah you’re immune to disease, and you heal quickly, and you can smell things better." the brunet said.
"But what about the downsides?" I asked.
"What downsides are there?" the one girl asked.
Oh...my...god! These two are dumber then a box of nails! What downsides?! Jesus tap-dancing Christ.
"Uh let’s see how about all the rules you have to follow that if you brake could get you killed, or worse tortured" I said harshly and the girls lost their smile. "How about the fact that you have to control your emotions or you could shift and kill someone?" I continued ruthlessly. The girls were starting to look shaken. Good they need to know it's not paradise as a shifter. "What about the fact you got to be worried about crazy religious freaks wanting to kill you, or nut job bounty hunters that would hunt you just for the thrill of it" I said. I could feel my anger rising. These idiots thought being a shifter was like candy land, and the two schmucks obviously were only filling their heads with bullshit just to get laid!
"I mean sure all that is just so worth having to obey the Ulfric orders no matter how crazy or immoral they are. Oh and you have to worry about the pack itself because if you do anything to piss off the Alpha wolves they can take your lives unless you have the protection of one of the other Alphas to protect you. Then you have to worry about rival clans killing you because it’s all about territory." I said raising my voice
"What’s going on over there?"
"Sounds like that waiter is fighting with the customers."
"Isn't that David?"
"Kid who can call shifters."
"Shit this guy is killing the mood."
"Damn I knew we shouldn't have told them we would change them, if he tells Jamil or Shang-Da we could get into some serious shit."
I froze mid rant. I had heard the voices, just for an instant. The second I realized what I was hearing it stopped, like some one flipped a switch they were gone. I recognized the voice of one of the men, and the voices of the other customers.
I saw Jeremy quickly but discreetly walking over to our table "Is there a problem?" he asked looking from me to the guys
"No, no problem. Except these two girls think being a shifter is the best thing in the world, and these two." I said glaring at the two guys "Are telling them they'll make them wolves just so they can sleep with them." I said.
The girls shot the guys looks of outrage and anger "Is this true?" the red head demanded.
"Oh yes in fact it's against the rules unless you have the Ulfric’s blessing, ask Jer here he's an honest wolf." I said putting extra emphasis on honest "Now if you'll excuse me I’ll go and get you your food." I said excusing myself.
I went to the kitchen to give the order. I needed to calm down so I went to my locker and took a seat. I can't believe some people, what is so bad about being human? I mean if Shifters, and vamps were so great how come we out number then? Why are they the physical and metaphysical superiors but here we are running the show? Is getting sick, growing old, and being normal so bad? People like that think that if you surrender your humanity life is sooo much easier....dumb asses.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Later that night Jeremy and I were riding to the Lupanar. We drove in silence, just listening to the radio. I was still in a pissy mood and going to the Lupanar didn't improve my mood. "Want to talk about it?" Jeremy asked turning the radio off so we could talk better.
"Not really but it might help." I said.
"You ever been to a Lupanar?" he asked.
"Besides the one back home? No.” I said looking out the window.
"Ours is deep in the woods, there is a throne made from rock were generations of Ulfrics have sat a ruled." Jeremy said.
"Ours is deep in the woods too." I said "It has a large creek that is used of certain rituals, There is also a tree there its roots go right into the creek. When we cremate our dead we pour the ashes into the creek. It is believed there Munin are absorbed into the tree" I said remembering the legend of my home.
“Is it true?” he asked amazed.
“It’s true; I even interacted with them a few times. Peg our Vargamore thought my power called even the Munin. Even the memory of a dead shifter is drawn to me.” I said.
"So what was all that back there?" he asked.
"Just amazed at how eagerly people seem to be willing to throw away their humanity." I said looking out the window. We were driving out the city and heading to the more woodsy area.
"You can still be a shifter and have humanity." Jeremy said rather stiffly.
"You know what I mean Jer; your lives are more violent. There's more risk off being tortured just because someone higher up on the ladder told you to do something and you don‘t do it."
"Richard doesn't force us to do things we don't want." Jeremy said.
"He doesn't, but what about when the next guy comes along who isn't as nice." I said "We both know being Ulfric is a lifetime commitment and the only way to stop is to be killed. Everything about wolf culture is about dominance and proving how big and bad you are.”
"You really think it would be that bad to be a wolf?" he asked coolly.
"For Christ sakes Jer you saw what those girls were like they were innocent and if you’re a wolf and your innocent you’re submissive and thereby fresh meat, and the only way to be dominant to be strong is to be ruthless."
"Are you saying that I’m ruthless?" he asked me his face looked pained.
I never knew his standing in the pack. I knew the weaker wolves liked to make friends with the stronger wolves, so if any of the other stronger wolves tried anything against the weaker ones they would have to answer to the other stronger wolf. I knew Jeremy had been a member of the pack for a few years now, but my power was always able to tell who was and wasn’t an Alpha, he never struck me as an Alpha but I knew he wasn’t a submissive ether. But judging from the hurt look on his face I think he had to be ruthless in order to survive.
"I think that in order to survive we have to do things....we may regret later. I think that the whole system is nothing but bullshit and just because someone isn't a beast on the outside as well as in they shouldn't be hurt." I put a comforting hand on his shoulder "I think that innocent people can't last long, but just because you’re ruthless in the pack doesn't mean you are a ruthless person just trying to protect yourself and the ones you love."
Jeremy let out a shaky laugh "Wow you sound like you know so much about people, like their animals."
"We are animals Jer, the only difference is shifters have the claws to prove it."
"And how would you know about people and-" he saw me raise my eyebrow "Oh right."
"Yeah we’re animals." I continued "But unlike most animals we know the difference between right and wrong, unfortunately most ignore that when they turn."
"You think that things would be different if we weren’t so blood thirsty? It's who we are Dave." he said.
"No I think that even before you are infected you have a desire to do good and evil, but when people are turned they just go and blame all the bad things they do on animals."
"Animals do bad things too."
"Animals are animals, they aren’t good or evil they just are. Just because you get a love for blood and flesh doesn't mean you should just give in because for humans giving in to such feelings leads to evil because humans have knowledge of evil."
"You put some serious thought into this?" he asked.
"I had to; after I left the pack I needed to seriously revaluate my life. But I also thought about whether my family was just doing what they did because it's what all shifters do or just something else." I said. "I don't think your evil Jer. I don't think anyone is born evil, but we all have a choice."
"Not always." he said firmly
"Always," I said just as firmly "It's just up to us whether it's worth making the choice or not."
We sat there in silence listening to the radio. Me and Jeremy. Both of us had it all, a great life, great family. Then we lost it all. Now here we are heading toward his packs Lupanar, life has a funny way of working. But right now I’m not laughing.
