I lied in bed for days watching the sun rise and set. I was thirsty and hungry, but I ignored the pangs I felt. All I wanted was Jacob. I called Billy to see if he’d heard from, but he hadn’t. He ordered the members of his pack not to tell me anything if I asked so, Uncle Seth couldn’t offer up any information when I called.
I could hear things being moved around the house as everyone prepared themselves for our move to Denali. Grandpa Carlisle figured it would be best to live near their oldest and closest friends especially now that the Denali clan was two short. After Irina’s death Tanya decided being at the house in Denali was too hard so she stayed with us. It wasn’t too long after she got settled that she met Grandpa Charlie and fell in love. It worked well for them since Grandpa was lonely and Tanya preferred humans to vampires.
It just seemed like everyone was happy, except for me. I knew that if I left Forks I would never see Jacob again, but I also knew that my parents would never let me stay here. Not with out adult supervision anyway.
“GRANDPA CHARLIE!” I said aloud. I heard everyone stop moving down stairs as they heard my sudden outburst. I couldn't figure out why I didn't think of it before. Without giving it a second thought I leaped off of my bed and was down the stairs in a matter of seconds. I rarely ever used my vampire speed, I had taken to acting more human for Jacob's sake, and the rush was exciting. Uncle Jasper was the first person I saw when I got downstairs.
“Hey Uncle Jasper, where are my parents?”
“Packing up the cottage.” He said flatly still staring at me. For someone who could control the emotional atmosphere he was awfully monotone.
“Thanks!” I was out the door and halfway to the river by the time I got the word out. I bounded over the river at full speed and landed in the meadow where I used spend most of my afternoons with Jacob. I felt a pain in my chest as I thought about Jacob, I missed him dearly.
I got to the cottage just as the door opened, they must have heard me coming.
“What’s wrong?” Daddy asked as I ran inside.
“Nothing, I wanted to talk to you and Momma. I’ve decided that I want to stay here, well not here, but in Forks. I wanna live with Grandpa Charlie and Tanya.”
“Renesmee, I don't think that is a good idea. You are...” I cut him off.
“Please hear me out before you decide. If I come with you to Denali there is a good chance that I will never see Jacob again. I remember seeing in Momma’s memories how she felt when she had to live without you, Daddy. I don’t want to feel that way. I can’t live without Jake.” I saw pain in his eyes as I let him see flashes of Momma’s memory.
“Renesmee,” Momma said softly, “you’re still just a child. You have so much that you still need to learn.”
“Momma, you know more than anyone how important this is to me. I know you would never give up Daddy for anything. I need to keep hoping that Jacob will come back and I can’t do that in Denali.” They exchanged a look. I saw Daddy nod his head in response and then turn to me.
“Have you talked to Charlie and Tanya about this?” I couldn’t help, but smile I ran up to them and threw my arms around the both of them. They were letting me stay I couldn’t believe it.
“I haven’t, but I’m sure they’ll be happy to have me stay with them for a while…” Daddy held up his hand to cut me off. He reached in to his pocket for his cell phone and dialed the number.
“Hello?” It was Tanya.
“Hello, cousin.”
“Ah, Edward I didn’t expect to hear from you until after the move. How are things?”
“Everything is going well we will be finished packing up the house in a few weeks time, but Tanya that is not why I called.”
“Oh?”
“I called to ask if Charlie and you would be opposed to Renesmee living with you. She wishes to remain in Forks.”
“Really? Well, Edward tell Nessie that we would be delighted to have her. I cannot always speak for Charlie, but in this case I am sure I speak for both of us when I say that she is more than welcome to live with us. I will prepare Bella’s old room and it will be ready when she arrives.”
“Thank you, Tanya.” He closed the phone and looked up at me, “There will be conditions of course.” I rolled my eyes.
“First, you must visit often and call every day.” Momma had the same look on her face that Grandma Esme had whenever she was upset. If she could cry I’m almost certain she would have.
“Second, you must attend school. Your aging has slowed to a point where it is hardly noticeable, so there is no reason for you not to be a normal teenager.” Daddy has always considered education to be very important, so this stipulation came as no surprise to me.
“Third, you must promise that you will not go looking for Jacob. I will be having your Aunts and Uncles keeping an eye on you.” Wonderful how was I going to look for Jake with 9 werewolves watching my every move.
“I promise.” I hated lying to them. I would find my own means of looking for Jacob that involved thwarting werewolves, vampires and police alike, because there was no doubt in my mind that Daddy would have Grandpa Charlie and Tanya watching me too.
****
The last 2 weeks in the house flew by. Before I knew it all 9 of us stood in the foyer looking around the house for the last time. We had many happy memories in this house and it was sad looking around and seeing everything covered in white sheets. Grandma Esme was the last one out the door; she looked back into the house one last time before she flipped off the lights and closed the door. She let out of soft sigh and turned to face us with sadness in her topaz eyes. This house was her masterpiece and the longest residence that they had ever held. Grandma hated moving from place to place.
We walked out to the garage, where the cars were all packed and ready to go, to say goodbye.
“See ya kiddo!” Uncle Emmett said as he gave me a huge bear hug, lifting me off of the ground and squeezed the air out of my lungs.
“Come and see us soon.” Aunt Alice said as she gave me a big hug and a kiss on the cheek.
“Goodbye Renesmee.” Uncle Jasper was always subtle; no hug just a stern good bye.
“Let me know if you go through any major changes before I see you next so I can write them in your medical journal.” Grandpa Carlisle said with a sweet smile and then hugged me.
“Let us know if you need anything. We won’t be but 5 hours away please visit often. I will miss you so much Nessie.” Grandma Esme gave me warm hug and a kiss on the forehead; she always knew the right thing to say to warm my heart.
Aunt Rosalie didn’t say anything. She just hugged me, kissed my cheek and gave me a warm smile.
“I don’t know how I’m going to get used to not having you around. Please be safe. I love you.” Momma almost never let me hear her thoughts, but I knew she just couldn’t find the right words. I was like her in that sense I was not good with goodbyes. She touched my face and pulled me into a hug, kissed the tears on my face and walked away.
“Vos mos usquequaque exsisto meus angelus. EGO diligo vos. Commodo exsisto tutus.” Daddy knew how much I loved Latin. It was our special language, we studied it together.
“EGO diligo vos , quoque Daddy. EGO mos requiro vos.” He smiled at me and walked over to where Momma stood. They took one last look at me and got in to Momma’s Aston Martin and pulled out of the garage followed by Uncle Emmett in his Jeep , Aunt Rose in her BMW, Aunt Alice and Uncle Jas in her Porsche and Grandpa Carlisle and Grandma Esme in their Mercedes. I listened as they all drove to the end of our 3 mile long drive until each one hit the highway and sped off. As I turned around to close up the garage I noticed there was still one more set of keys on the hook. I looked over into the far corner of the garage where the other 5 cars had just pulled out and there in the corner was Daddy’s silver Volvo with a pink bow and a not written in Latin that said, “Sumo bonus tutela suus.” Take good care of her. I took the keys off the hook and jumped into the silver Volvo that was now mine. It felt like a rite of passage; this was Daddy’s favorite car. I started her up and took off down the driveway to the highway toward Grandpa’s house.
Jacob’s POV
“The scent is still fresh. They must still be here.” I thought to myself as I ran full force toward the Cullen house. I’d only been gone a few weeks, it was more than enough time to clear my head and realize that I could no longer live without her. I pushed my legs harder and faster, I couldn’t be too late the scent of them was still pretty fresh. I was prepared to take any consequences as long as I didn’t have to go another day without seeing Nessie. The trees were flying by me and I could see the house through them.
“Why is everything so dark? There are always lights on; they’re vampires for God’s sake they don’t sleep!” I stopped right before I reached the clearing in front of the house to phase back to my human form. I put my clothes on as I walked the rest of the way to the house. One of the garage doors was left open I looked inside to see that all of their cars were gone. I started to panic and ran up to the front door, “Locked, DAMMIT!!” I ran around the back of the house and phased back into a wolf; my clothes ripped into shreds around me, but I didn’t care. I jumped over the river and ran straight through the woods to the cottage. ”Another dead end.”
They were really gone and I was too late. I didn’t even find out where they were going. I let out a howl and then collapsed in front of the cottage.
“Jake? Are you alright?” Seth’s voice came ringing in my head.
“Their gone. I was too late.”
“Yeah they left about a week ago. Edward came to say bye. He asked me to give you a message if you decided to come back.”
I felt my ears perk up, “What is it?” I asked with a hopeful tone in my voice.
“He said that he didn’t want you to hurt Nessie again. He said that she deserves to be happy.”
“He’s right. I don’t deserve her. I’ll see you around Seth.”
“Jake, wait there…” I phased back before Seth could finish I didn’t want to hear anymore. Edward was right Nessie deserved to be happy and after what I did I didn’t deserve her.
I walked back to La Push on two feet. I didn’t bother phasing back I didn’t want anyone in my head. I got to my dad’s house just before sunrise and walked straight back into my makeshift garage to where I kept my extra clothes. I got dressed and walked up the house. I climbed in through my bedroom window and collapsed on to my bed I didn’t realize how exhausted I was until my head hit the pillow.
When I opened my eyes it was still dark outside, I looked over at the clock, 8 pm. I’d slept through an entire day and a half. I got out of bed and walked around the house, it was empty. My dad was probably over at the Clearwater’s where he spent most of his time. I didn’t feel like seeing anyone so I decided not to go back there and phasing wasn’t an option either because I didn’t want 9 nosy werewolves putting their thoughts in my head. Being in this house was the only way that I could be alone with my thoughts.
Nessie’s POV
The first few days with Grandpa Charlie were odd. Even though he’d been in the loop since I was born he still couldn’t get used to how much I’d grown. “You look so much like your mother.” Was pretty much all that he could say. I knew he missed my Mom dearly; I knew his true feelings about everything when he hugged me. All of this was like a bad sci-fi movie and a part of him felt like Momma died because she wasn’t his “Bella” anymore, he would never get used to how fast I’d grown over the last year and he wondered how he could be so lucky to have a wife like Tanya.
Daddy had gotten me all the papers I needed to start school. He said it would be best to have a strong back story to avoid suspicion. I was to be Grandpa Charlie’s step daughter. I would go by Carlie, my middle name, instead of Renesmee, since Aunt Alice had foreseen Grandma Renee coming to live in Forks to help Grandpa cope with Momma’s "death." Tanya was going to be my pretend mother for the remainder of my time here in Forks. Since Tanya doesn’t have a last name, she was born in a time before people were given last names, we agreed on Denali, after her home. Carlie Denali, it had a nice ring to it.
I planned on looking for Jacob as soon as I could get away, but I never seemed to be able to get a moment alone. So, I did the only thing I could think of to make an excuse to leave.
“Charlie?”
“Huh?” He was too absorbed in some sports game on TV to give me his full attention.
“Is it ok if I go and see Uncle Seth? I already called Sue and she said it’s fine with her.”
“Yeah fine. Be back by 10, kiddo you have school tomorrow.” I hated being called “kiddo.” I had no plans on going to see Seth or any of the other werewolves I was going to try and find a trace of Jacob’s scent. I walked out the front door and jumped into the driver’s seat of the Volvo. I drove toward the rez and pulled off the road into a clearing that was well hidden in the trees. I shut the car off and sniffed the air. The smell of werewolf was everywhere I could make out Paul, Jared, Quil, Embry, Seth, Leah, Collin, Brady and Rachel (Jake’s sister), but no Jacob. I set off on foot toward his father’s house I was in a hurry so having my father's speed and agility came in handy. It only took me a few minutes to get to Jacob’s house. I didn’t realize how much I missed it until his human scent smacked me in the face as soon as I walked out of the woods into his yard. His scent was strong and fresh. He was here. I felt the excitement building as I followed his scent first to his garage and then to right under his bedroom window.
I was usually opposed to breaking and entering, but this time I made an exception. His room was dark and empty. I didn’t want to feel disappointed or defeated, but I couldn’t help it. I sat down on his bed and buried my face in his pillow. As his scent filled my nose I felt an ache in my heart; I was hoping he'd be here I wanted more than anything to see him. It took everything that I had to force myself off of his bed; I needed to check the rest of the house. I walked to his bedroom door and opened it just enough for me to slip out into the hallway. The scent was even stronger there. As I crept down the hallway I heard a car pull up in front of his house. I didn’t want to get caught by Billy, he would definitely tell Grandpa Charlie that I was here and he'd ship me off to Denali. I was out of the house and running toward to clearing before Billy even got to the ramp Jake built for him.
I wasn’t going to give up hope that Jacob was here. I touched everything in his room that I could before I left. If he was back he was sure to pick it up. I would come back as soon as I could get away from Charlie again, but for right now I needed to get back to the car and back to Forks.
Jacob’s POV
I must have dosed off on the couch because the next thing I heard was the sound of Billy’s wheelchair coming up the ramp. I wasn’t ready for him to know that I was home yet so I ran back to my bedroom. Nessie’s scent hit me like a ton of bricks when I walked through the door. She was here. Without even thinking I striped, jumped out my window and phased running full force toward the trail of her scent. The trail ended in a clearing deep in the woods. There was nothing but tire tracks in the dirt.I phased back hoping it wasn’t too late.
“NESSIE!” If she was anywhere close I knew she would hear me. I listened as hard as I could with my human ears. I heard animals running through the trees and off in the distance I heard car tires come to screeching halt. “NESSIE!!” I screamed louder this time. It was her in the car it had to be. I knew the sound of that car it was the Volvo, I would know the sound of it’s engine from anywhere. I remembered listening for it when Edward would bring Bella here. I took off into a full sprint. The car was idling nearby on the road. I heard the whooshing of the wind a split second before I hit a rock wall.
“Jake wake up! Oh God please don’t be dead! I just got you back you can’t be dead.”
“Ness?” I felt like I'd been hit by a truck. Was she that mad that she ran me over with her car?
“No, we ran into each other at full speed!” I put my hand up to touch her face. Her cheek was wet and I could smell her tears.
“Why are you crying?”
“I’m happy Jake.” She sniffled, “I was afraid that I wasn’t going to find you, but I did and you’re here.” I opened my eyes and took in the full beauty of her face, the fullness of her lips; I wanted to kiss her. As soon as the thought came into my head she smiled. I sat up and put my other hand on her face and pulled it toward me. She exhaled the sweet smell of her breath knocked the wind out me and made me light headed. Our lips touched gently at first, it was like nothing I had ever felt before. She put her arms around my neck and kissed me hungrily. When our tongues met it was like fire, we began kissing harder and deeper and I felt myself losing control. I pulled away from her.
“I’m sorry.” I said as I stood up and back away from her.
“For what?” She panted.
“I’m afraid that I might lose control. I couldn’t live with myself if I hurt you again.”
“You won’t,” she said as she stood up, “I trust you Jake. We belong together.” She put her hand on my face. I picked her up and swung her around and she laughed that musical laugh that I loved so much.
“I love you Jake.” She said as I put her down. That was the first time she had ever said it out loud.
“I love you, Nessie.” I leaned down and kissed her softly on the lips.
“It makes sense now.”
“What does?”
“All the stuff that Momma let me see in her head. I understand how she feels when Daddy kisses her now.” She laughed and I laughed with her.
“Oh no, I have to go.” She said as I heard a muffled vibrating noise coming from the idling car in the distance. “That’s probably Charlie. It must be after 10. I’ve gotta go Jake.”
“Charlie? What?”
“Oh, um, long story short I wouldn’t leave without you so my parents let me stay with a few conditions. So, I’m living with Grandpa Charlie and Tanya. Charlie told me to be home by 10 because I start school tomorrow and he’ll never let me out of the house again if I’m not there. So, I gotta go.” She put her arms around my neck and kissed me softly again. “Meet me here tomorrow?”
“Of course.” She smiled at me and ran off into the trees.
