The room let out a collective breath. It was more servants. They had brought in trays of food and drink.
"Come," they urged. "You must be thirsty. It was a very long walk from your village and you must be tired. Rest and eat a little. Regain your strength." I nibbled a bit of the bread they handed me and gulped the water, the cool liquid washing down my throat. I felt too sick to eat much, but I kept sipping the water gratefully.
"Tari didn't have to walk," piped a voice thick with disdain. I looked around and saw it was the carpenter's daughter, Marianna. When I had first joined the village she was sweet to me, my first friend, but ever since her brother had tried to start courting me we had started growing apart. "She rode her horse next to the captain."
Pity flashed through the eyes of the servants. "Then may the gods have pity on her, and you should be thankful it was not you."
Marianna was taken aback by this, and several of the older women started to weep.
"What is going to happen to me?" I asked in a small voice, my anger forgotten and feeling more terrified than I had in my entire life.
One of the servants stopped in her rounds of passing out cups of water. Pity was in her eyes. "You are so young, and so beautiful." She shook her head and continued making the others drink or take a few bites of food.
Marianna looked utterly nonplussed. "What does that have to do with anything?" she demanded angrily. " I am the same age, and just as beautiful, if not more, and I was forced to walk all that way. Why does she get special treatment?"
Rayna gasped angrily. "If they say you should feel lucky, then count your blessings and hold your tongue." The look on Marianna's face was one of shock. You would think Rayna had slapped her across the face.
"I would think last night's misadventure would be enough to convince you," the serving woman commented absently as she handed off another cup. She paused, taking in the confused looks around her. "Oh, they don't know..." She trained off, her face turning red. I felt myself pale as all faces in the room turned to me.
I looked at the servant woman. "How do you know?"
The servant blushed and looked away. "The same captain escorted refugees from my village here."
Rayna looked devastated. "My poor child, what happened to you?"
I was once again cut off before I could answer her. Several soldiers entered the room, accompanied by the deathly pale creature. His eyes scanned the room, narrowing as they met mine before he quickly looked away. My fear deepened, filling my veins with ice.
"Follow me," he ordered as he turned on his heel and stalked off. The soldiers surrounded our small group and we began walking. The corridor was massive. Paintings hung from the walls, and statues and soldiers stood at alternating intervals. Eyes flicked toward us as we walked, a few hopeful. Huge doors loomed ahead of us, growing nearer with each step we took, our fear growing apace.
We finally reached the massive doors, and the black clad boy raised his arm and banged soundly. The doors swung open soundlessly, revealing a massive hall with ceilings so high we could barely see them. At the end of the hall stood a throne, and on that throne sat a man. He emanated power; it rolled off him in waves. A few women shuddered in terror, some shrank back away from him. We had come face to face with the king.
