When me and Alice left the car and got inside, my stomach immediately growled hungrily. Pleasant smells wafted their wicked ways into the sensitive sensory receptacles of my nose, which in turn made my mouth water. I was starved.
“Jeeze Bella, we’ve barely been shopping. It's only been three hours!”
“Alice, two things. One, you don't have a realistic concept of time. And two, I didn’t get a chance to eat breakfast, remember?”
“Oh right.” She leaned closer. “How could I keep forgetting you humans need to eat? I’d better keep you fed before Edward has a fit.”
I didn't blame her for wanting to get me fed. Even I thought that Edward was a bit anal. Would I tell him that? Heh, no.
We were led to a booth by a blond waitress ironically named "Alice" where we both made ourselves comfortable. Alice said she wasn’t hungry and told me to order what I liked. So when the waitress came back I ordered.
“I would like the chicken parmesan, the breaded raviolis, a orange cream soda, and a diet coke.”
“We’ll be right out with that.”
I rolled my eyes and groaned, hardly daring to believe that I was about to say this to Alice of all people.
“Alice, if you have something to say, just say it.”
Her voice was deadly sweet. “No, I was just talking about how I wanted you to fit in your wedding dress. That’s all.”
I snorted out a derisive laugh. “Well, at least your honest.”
We both cracked up at that. “I highly doubt that Bella. So what are you trying to do? Eat the whole restaurant?"
"No Alice. That would be you. After all, you are the vampire. So who will it be? The waitress or the cook?" I smirked.
"Very funny Bella. So you must really want to go dress shopping again! Oh I can't wait!"
"Alice, I weigh about twenty pounds less than normal. I'm practically anorexic."
She stared me over for a few moment, contemplating. "You do seem to be getting sick a lot more than normal." She continued to look contemplative while I sipped on my diet coke and munched on a breadstick and some salad. She finally stopped inspecting me and shrugged nonchalantly, which looked pretty funny on her petite lithe frame.
“So Bella, first off, I want you to tell me, what brought this on?”
“Can I start at the beginning? It’s kind of a long story.”
“We’ve got time. I can imagine you didn’t actually want to go on this trip to shop anyway. So just spill Bella. And tell Alice all of your deep dark secrets.”
I laughed happily. “When you rub your hands together like that and speak about yourself in third person that was, it’s kinda creepy.”
“I’m not apologizing. Now stop changing the subject.”
I sighed. “Have it your way you blasted pixy! Ok, it all started at the camp. When we had the battle with those newborns. Do you remember?”
“Yes, as if you need to ask silly Bella. What about it?”
“Jacob kissed me and-”
“He did WHAT?”
I stopped talking for a long moment before Alice finally sheepishly put her head down in an apologetic gesture. I was honestly in between unsurprised and rather surprised that Edward hadn't told them.
“Alice the only way this is going to work is if we cooperate. So I need you to pay attention. K?”
“ok. I’m sorry Bella.”
“I know. Just don’t interrupt again.”
“K.”
“K. So Jacob kissed me and that was when I realized how much I actually loved him. I began kissing him back. And I felt horrible for doing it but it was like my brain had disconnected from my body. I love him Alice. If Edward weren’t alive, Jacob would be my healthy and true soul mate.”
“But he’s not.”
“No, he is. But it’s in a different way. Jacob is my soul mate in the more healthy “I’m not fatally in love with you” kind of thing. It’s sweet, safe, kind, gentle, and he’s my best friend. We get along really easily even though we don’t like all the same things and that’s because our personalities blend.”
“So what about you and Edward? Why don’t you just go with Jacob?”
“Because that would destroy me Alice. If I go with Jacob than I die again. Healthy love can't overcome what me and Edward have.”
“Ok, so than what can it do?”
“Jacob adds something special to my relationship with him. It’s why he is my best male friend. Literally. Not even Edward is that close to me because truthfully, even though we have things in common, our personalities aren’t perfectly in sync.”
“That’s true. I can vouch for that myself. So you think adding Jacob would make your relationship stronger?”
“No. I’m in no way calling my relationship with Edward weak. I want to make that clear. I’m just saying that it isn’t completely compatible. And that’s perfectly ok. But it’s not weak because of that. No one is completely compatible with every single thing.”
“Ok so keep going. Tell me something else I don’t know. Why do you want to add Jacob to your relationship?”
“Because I want to make Edward happy. And I feel that Jacob is the way to do that.”
“Are you saying my brother is gay?”
“He was never gay and he never will be Alice. What I’m saying is that though Edward will deny it forwards, backwards, and sideways, he is interested in guys. I’ve seen it. And it’s beginning to become a bit obvious.”
Her eyes were sharp. “Like when Bella?”
“When we went to the music store and the clerk flirted with him. When we went to a concert and one of the male groupies flirted with him. When we were here in town and some guy started checking him out, Edward started looking right back. He’s shown interest in guys Alice, and I don’t want to keep him from that. I want him to have that.”
“Wow. I wouldn’t have yelled at you if you would have told me that. Ok, so what makes you think that Jacob could be the guy for Edward?”
“He’s the guy for me and he loves me just as much as Edward does, just in a slightly more healthy way. Anyone who could love me like that, if Edward could see them as a friend, he’s bound to adore that person because of the way they love me. That’s just his personality type.”
“Very true. So ok. You pick Jacob because he would be good for Edward and you and you feel that he’s a guy you could both agree on. Your personality gels with Jacob, obviously. But does Edward’s?”
“They both like fast cars, motorcycles, music, and me. They like extreme sports, running, hunting, and fighting over me. What if that fighting over me could be turned into them both loving me? What if they could share me?”
She smirked. “They seem pretty compatible. They like all the same things, including the love of their life. But how do you know that Jacob will stay with you both?”
“I don’t know how I know but I know. Alice do you ever get those feelings where you feel like you just know something and you know you are right but you can’t give a reason why?”
She was silent for a moment before answering.
“I know that feeling and it’s usually right. I’d trust my instincts if I were you Bella. They are stronger than anything else in a human.”
I grinned at my favorite pixy. “Than it’s official. Can you help me win Jacob over for me and Edward?”
“Well, from what I know, Edward and Jacob are out today. If they fight or anything, Edward comes home in a bad mood. But if he comes home in a good mood, that’s means it was a good day for him and Jacob, which I’ll admit has never happened before…”
“Ok so he’ll be in a good mood. I’ll be looking for that.”
I dug into the chicken parmesan that was placed before me.
“Bella, you are missing one major key factor here. I would love for it to be happy ever after for you three and I really wish it were that simple. But men are extremely territorial. There is next to no chance that it could work Bella. Edward would try for you, but we don’t even know if Jacob loves you enough to do that for you. We also don’t know if what he feels is love or obsession. And guess what? You can’t even focus on those things yet!”
“Why not?”
“Because, you aren’t intimate with Edward.”
“What does that have to do with anything?”
“Jacob will want to be intimate with you both but Edward will hold out on both of you to be fair to you and that’s not fair to Jacob.”
“Ok than easy. Get intimate with Edward.”
“No. Get intimate with yourself bella. You can’t even begin to tackle Edward if you can’t even tackle yourself, so to speak.”
“Why do I need to um…do that?”
“Bella tell me this, how can you be in a loving intimate relationship with two men when you can’t be intimate with yourself?”
“I-I guess that makes sense.”
“If you want my advice? Get more comfortable. Also, make sure the boys know each other a bit better. There are a lot of things that are alike but they are different. They come from different time periods with different thoughts, feelings, ideologies, and emotions.”
“And that’s what will make it work. They will balance each other out and point out what the other is doing wrong.”
“Edward won’t appreciate that.”
“But he will learn to when he sees how much I appreciate it. Look Alice, I can’t keep Edward under control. No one can. He answers to no one but himself. But the way he and Jacob get along, it’s not like he’s answering to Jacob. More like he’s looking for advice. He listens to Jacob when he doesn’t listen to me.”
“But he hates Jacob?”
“I know but he still goes to him for advice on what to do with me when I won’t listen to him.”
“Why won’t you listen to Edward?”
“Because he won’t listen to me.”
“Than that’s your first lesson. Get him to listen to you. I believe you when you say that you think Jacob could balance out the relationship. But you also have to have a backbone too or else this won’t work because if you three are fighting and they agree, you will have two men running over you, not just one. You need to be strong enough to hold your own because Jacob and Edward won’t always be on your side. And you need to understand that. And that‘s only one example.”
“That’s a good point.”
“So weigh the pros and cons bella. Become a woman, know you are sexy, and take complete control.”
“So how do I get him to touch me?”
“You don’t. Try doing it yourself for the first time.”
“Ok.”
"And for pete's sake Bella, stop blushing!"
We laughed as we put the money in the pocket fold and left the restaurant. Hopefully, the future would hold some good thing for me Edward and Jacob.
