We were cuddled up at Escala, our apartment in the clouds. Christian snuggled me under a blanket, watching a movie. I used to be able to count on my fingers the number of times I’d seen Christian Grey watch TV, but now that I was pregnant it was becoming a favorite pastime.
“I would have gotten pregnant sooner if I’d known it would make you stay home and watch romantic comedies with me!” I giggled. Christian just smiled and nuzzled my neck. I was glad we could joke about this now. The lights from the movie flickered in the den, and I cuddled up closer into my husband. After a few moments, I felt something odd and stirred. “Oh!” I gasped. “Ana! What’s wrong? What is it? Are you hurt?” I waited a second without responding. What was that? Then I felt it again, and my hand instinctively flew to my stomach, which was now a small but definite bump for all the world to see. “Ana, please, you’re scaring me.” Christian was now facing me, a very worried look in his eyes. “Christian, I’m fine! Here!” I moved his hand to my stomach, hoping that Little Blip would kick for him, too. Christian waited, puzzled and still fearful, but a few seconds later that now-familiar flutter was back. “Oh!” Christian gasped. “Your son or daughter just started kicking, baby!” I squealed. Now Christian’s hand stayed firmly on my stomach, and I knew he wouldn’t be removing it any time soon. He leaned down, adding a second hand to my belly, and kissed it gently. “Hi, baby.” Another kick! Christian beamed. “Well, aren’t you the little soccer player?” I giggled and placed my hands over his. “Ana, this is incredible,” he looked up at me, sincerity brimming in his gray eyes. “Our baby, baby,” I beamed back. He wrapped us back up in our blanket once again. We had become a bit disheveled from those first kicks. “Ana, you said our son or daughter started kicking. What do you think it is?” I truly didn’t know. I often pictured a sweet copper-haired little boy that looked just like my handsome husband, but imagining a darling baby girl wrapped around Christian’s finger was undeniably wonderful. “I don’t know, baby. Until next month when we find out, it’s just our Little Blip. Do you have a preference?” He thought about this a moment. “I worry about having a little girl, Ana.” I could see the fear pass through his dark eyes. I snuggled up against him and began to trace my hand around the little tuff of hair peeking through the top of his shirt. “Talk to me, baby,” I pleaded with him. “Why are you worried?” “I worry that I won’t know how to handle my love for her.” “Well, that doesn’t seem like too bad a problem to have!” I tried to lighten the mood. “I would just be so scared. A baby girl would feel so delicate. I would want to protect her from everything. It’s scary enough feeling like I can barely keep you safe. What if something happened to her? I would crumble.” “Shhh,” I told him, gently stroking his hair. “You will be the most incredible father, no matter what. Your daughter would be the happiest little girl around. But, I think you’re right, that it might be nice to have a little boy first. Maybe one day he could help you keep our daughter safe, the way you protect Mia.” He seemed to be more content with this picture, as did Little Blip, who gave a kick in response. Christian and I both giggled. I returned my attention to the movie, as Christian slid his hand slightly under my pajama pants, to get a better grip on my bump. He caressed my stomach slowly and gently, more reassuring himself than me that everything would be all right.
