Ch. 3
Half-truths and OmissionsI hurriedly pull the top of my dress up to cover my bared breasts, heat infusing my cheeks knowing that Peeta has seen this. He just stands there, glaring at Finnick and me, not bothering to move farther than the doorway. After what feels to be an eternity, Peeta opens his mouth to speak. “So it’s true then.” That’s all he says. No questions of why, no declarations of how his love is still true if only I would come back to him so he can prove himself to me, nothing. And yet, that statement is filled with such loathing that something inside of me dies at the thought of the sweet baker boy being so hurt by something that I truly have no control over. I feel Finnick shift his weight on the couch next to me, putting a little space between us and I feel respect start to blossom over the fact that he is taking consideration of how both Peeta and I must be feeling. “Look, Peeta,” Finnick starts. “Don’t you say a word.” Peeta snarls at him in a voice that I have never before heard pass his lips. “I want to hear it from her. She owes me that much, at least.” “What would you like me to say, Peeta?” The room goes silent again. My heartbeat is so loud in my ears that I’m surprised that neither of them can hear it thudding against my rib cage. “What would I like you to say?” He almost laughs it. “How about telling me how you could do this to me, to us. We could have really had something and you’re just going to throw it away because someone like that…that…playboy right there decides you’re to be his flavor of the week!” “Peeta, you don’t understand-“ “You’re damn right I don’t understand,” he shouts at me. “I told you that I loved you!” Finnick brushes my hand softly, gaining my attention. “I think there are things that need to be discussed between the two of you and so I believe I’ll be off for a swim, I’ve found they can be quite relaxing. Come find me when you’re ready, kitten.” He brushes his lips against my temple, whispering softly in my ear, “Be careful what you say and how you say it, they’re always listening.” With that, he stands up and walks past Peeta and out the room, never glancing either back at me or at the raging boy standing just barely in his way. “What could you possibly see in him, Katniss? He can’t even stay in the room to defend the two of you to me. He really is just trying to get a piece of tail and then he’s going to leave you, the way he’s left countless others here in the Capitol.” I look up sharply at Peeta’s words. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.” “Oh, please, Katniss, he’s all over their tabloids and everything. The biggest news anyone ever hears on him is who his newest conquest is, and there’s been quite a few.” “There’s a lot that you don’t know, Peeta.” He storms over to me, towering, trying to intimidate me with his height. “Then explain it to me! Explain to me why you would give up what could have been a good life to just go and become Odair’s latest whore!” I’m so angry. At Peeta, at Finnick, at President Snow and the Capitol. But mostly, I’m angry with myself. “Because I had no choice!” I stop as I realize what it is I’ve just said. My eyes grow big and I see Peeta stop and almost physically recoil at my words, a confused look entering into his blue eyes. “What do you mean, had no choice? Odair didn’t….he didn’t…” “Oh God, Peeta, no. Nothing like that.” He pauses again, collecting his thoughts for his next round of questioning. “Then what-“ “I can’t,” I cut him off. “Please, don’t ask any more. Just leave it alone.” It is at this point that the door opens yet again, admitting both Haymitch and Effie into the room. “Well,” Haymitch starts, “you certainly know how to leave everyone wanting more, sweetheart.” Even though I wish that I could have had more time to talk to Peeta alone, I’m relieved that the two came in when they did. Too much longer and I may have ended up saying too much and putting Peeta in danger, which is that last thing that I want to do. I see Peeta trying to calm himself so that he’s civilized for company, even if it is just Effie and Haymitch. Always so caring of other people’s feelings. I feel tears burn the back of my eyes and I close them tightly, determined not to cry over this, it’s not like it can do anything to help. “I’m so sorry, but I think I’m going to retire for the night, what with all the excitement today, I find myself fairly worn out, if you’ll excuse me.” I get up and walk towards the door to my room, all the while thinking in my head that I, Katniss Everdeen of District 12, Victor of the 74th Hunger Games, older sister and provider, am taking the coward’s way out. And everyone in the room knows it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hey guys, sorry it took so long and I'm super sorry that it's so short. I've been working like crazy and my muse decided to take a temporary leave of absence. Hope you enjoyed the new chapter, I'll try and be a little faster with the updates. As always, reviews go a long way towards helping that happen. Thanks for reading :) Aislynn Hunter
