Chapter Three
That night my dad told me he was proud of me making it through the first round, and helped me with a practice game. Needless to say, I did okay. Dad still beat me though. I then went up to my room and turned on some music. I sat on my bed and read my book, but I couldn’t concentrate. I was now getting a bit worried that the wish I had made had come true.
The only way I’d know is if I did win the chess tournament, and would be even better if I beat Daniel and Corey out of the top three places. That would be great.
With that thought in mind, I turned back to reading.
Lunch was more excitable as Bronson talked about his first training session that night and that if I could come, he’d appreciate it. He also agreed to come and watch the chess games today, even though I knew it would bore him to tears.
Rebecca promised to meet me after school and we’d walk down to the track together. I liked spending time with her, she was a nice girl.
So when the time came for the next game, I was faced off with Steven. I have NEVER beaten Steven at a game of chess since I came to the club, not even once. The best I could do was thin out his forces at the cost of my own.
And the game was certainly going that way.
Steve had cut down a number of my best pieces, and I was left with a castle, knight and bishop, while he still had his queen, castles and knights. Finally, he had me pinned down. His knight and queen took my bishop and pawns and his queen sat in front of y king, protected by his knight so I couldn’t take it.
“Checkmate,” Steven said. I felt upset. I had lost. My wish hadn’t come true. It had been a beautiful thought that I might get my wish and win, but I apparently had been tricked.
But then I noticed something. I picked up my knight and counted, then recounted, and then took his queen. He had not been paying attention in his rush to victory. His jaw dropped and Bronson let out a little cry of “yes” under his breath.
The game changed dramatically, and all my pieces took out Steven as he continued to get more and more frustrated. I even got a pawn to the end of the board and got a queen back. Steven was almost livid by the time I had him backed into a corner and checkmated.
“I don’t believe it!” Steven said loudly. Even Daniel, who wasn’t too far away, looked over and saw what was going on. And for once, he had no comment.
Steven got taken out of the contest and I moved up into the top twelve.
And my next opponent was Corey.
I did my best not to let the situation fluster me. I’d only lost to Corey a million times, each more humiliating than the last. Corey was really good. But there was no point in denying that my wish was coming true, and it would no doubt help me kick Corey’s arse across the checkered board.
“End of the road,” Corey said as he sat down with the black pieces before him. I sat down with the white pieces, and we had a game of ‘Rock, Paper. Scissors,’ to see who would go first. I won with paper over rock.
The game was the most exciting and nerve-wracking I’ve ever played. Corey played a lot of good moves, and yet I always managed to wriggle my way out and even take one of his in the process. He got exceptionally irate when I managed to corner and take his queen, and I felt as if I would have a clean sweep over him.
That wasn’t quite true, he did take a number of my pieces, but it was usually costly to him to do so. In the end, I managed to keep my queen on the field and finally had her and a castle back his king onto the back line and checkmate him there.
“NO!” Corey yelled as he saw that it was over.
“You lose!” I jeered.
“I don’t believe it!” Corey yelled, and he picked up the board and flung it across the room.
“What’s going on?” Mr. Murray demanded.
“Jerry cheated,” Corey demanded.
“I was watching your game,” Mr. Murray replied crossly. “Jerry played a fair game and you lost. Now kindly pick up the board and pieces, and then make your way out the door.” Corey gave me the most murderous look I’ve ever seen but then did as he was told.
I had done it. I was I the top six for tomorrow.
That afternoon I walked Rebecca down to the track and field and spent time chatting with her. I asked her about living somewhere else and why she’d moved, and she asked me about my life and what I liked doing. We then discussed Bronson together, which was probably most fun. When we got to the track, Rebecca reserved seats while I went to the small canteen at the stadium to get us drinks. While I waited in line, I got shoved, hard. I sprawled onto the ground, and looked up to see Daniel and Corey. From where they stood, I could tell it was Corey who had attacked me.
“Got a problem?” I asked as I picked myself up and dusted off.
“You’re a cheater,’ Corey demanded.
“Can’t prove it,” I pointed out. “So until you can, you’ll have to face the fact that you lost,” I shot back.
”You just admitted to cheating,” Daniel said, pointing a finger at me.
“I said he’d have to prove it. Until he has proof, I am innocent.”
“He lost, all the proof needed. You might be teacher’s pet to Mr. Murray, but we know you cheated. Otherwise you never would have won.”
“I suppose if you are going to be dicks at winning, you are going to be sore at losing,” I retorted, getting back in line.
“Fuck you!” Daniel said.
“You’re not my type,” I lied while annoying him at the same time. Daniel and Corey walked away when they spotted a teacher headed our way. I watched them go. I was really angry at them, but then I got hit with a bout of guilt; they were right. Wasn’t wishing to win as good as cheating? True they would never prove it, but the victory I had suddenly didn’t seem as good as it had.
I took the drinks back to Rebecca and sat quietly, watching Bronson stretch and warm up.
“Something wrong?” Rebecca asked.
“Pang on consciousness.” I replied.
“Like what?”
“My wish is coming true Rebecca. I beat Corey at chess today. He and Daniel were just accusing me of cheating. It then dawned on me that my wish to win was cheating.”
Rebecca looked like I was nuts, and then it all settled on her.
“Is there any way you could have beaten Corey on your own?”
“Doubtful. I’ve never been good enough to beat him. If we had a game right now he would kick my arse. Even Dad beat me last night. But I think the refinement of my wish has made it that any game I play in the tournament is going to be a victory, or at least until the top three.”
“So drop out,” Rebecca advised. I thought about it. Would I give up getting even with Daniel in order to save face with myself? Needless to say Daniel would taunt me and call me a cheat until I graduated. And there still was the chance I wouldn’t play him at all. He had made the top six, but it wouldn’t be decided until tomorrow who went up against whom.
“I’ll think about it,” I said to her. I think she had read my mental struggle, and what was going on. She didn’t say anything and watched as Bronson got ready to race.
