James awoke the next morning careful not to disturb Caitlin’s slumber. There was no need for her to arise this early, and it was clear from the way she had slept that she was in great need of the rest she finally found. She had been extremely fitful during the night, as if she had been suffering from some beastly nightmare she was unable to escape. All he could do to console her when she got so restless was to hold her against him so she felt safe. Even though it rarely seemed to give her much ease.
It was strange; he had noticed that since they had retrieved her from her adolescent captors, her nightmares had increased from once in a while to nearly every single night. Normally he was the one with the troubled memories and past experiences coming back to haunt him in the most merciless ways. He stood over their bed for another moment, watching her as she seemed quite calm and content now. Hook could only speculate and guess at what strange images passed her minds eye. Perhaps later, he would explore the pages she had written out and see if she wrote them down.
At the glass box he kept his rather small (and annoying) fan club in, he pulled the cover off expecting to see her asleep and snoring on the quill she made into a feather bed. However Aurora was wide-awake and anxious to go wherever he might lead. Smiling eagerly up at the Captain, her wings fluttered happily. James gave a sigh of disgust, muttering under his breath, “Of course, you would be a morning creature wouldn’t you. You are certainly making quite the case against yourself you over grown fire fly.”
The Captain reached over picking up the tiny collar and leash he had fashioned for her, and unlatched the glass door letting it swing open. Before he had a chance to do or say anything, she zoomed out of her small quarters and slipped into her Collar on her way into his breast pocket that had become her favorite place, ready to go. Her small eyes peeking up at him, a bright smile still gracing her lips. James rolled his eyes, reaching for his hat before slipping silently out of the cabin to join whatever able bodied crewmen Smee had selected for there task this day.
They made their way to shore, trudging through the snowdrifts and ice that continually collected and grew more difficult to travel through. The boy, although small in size, certainly seemed to be tapped into untold amounts of energy. As he always kept a few steps ahead of his guard, as if he wished to hurry and finish his task so they could return to the ship that much faster and he could see the kind lady he had rescued from his brothers. Hook watched him quietly, a mixture of malice, jealousy, and distain in his eyes. Caitlin belonged to him; he had no intention of sharing her with anyone.
He took them all over the island showing him secret hideaways, trap doors, caves and tunnels that had been hidden cleverly by the lost boys, and many other hidden places they used to ambush and disappear from right under the pirate crew’s noses. Hook made sure that each location was clearly marked on his map. This perhaps would get them one step closer to breaking the curse that held them here in a child’s story.
Just after noon, they stopped to rest before continuing on with their search. Red, the small boy, sat down on a rock waiting patiently for them to be on their way once again without being directed to do so. He seemed particularly bright eyed, overly cooperative and eager to Smee’s eyes, as he had been watching him closely since they left the ship. It was odd to Smee as they had never had so much help from a lost boy before. They had always had to fight them every step of the way with one death threat after another.
The Captain was looking over his map, shaking his head at the pattern and network of escape routes that Pan had devised throughout Neverland. It was no wonder they had an impossible time capturing and tracking down the band of rebel children. Hook flicked his pocket as Aurora flew up looking at him. “I realize you find my pocket quite accommodating quarters when we are away from the Jolly Rodger, however you are here for a purpose and if you do not do your appointed task you will be used as bait for sea creatures instead.” He said narrowing his eyes. More then once he heard the small fairy snoring away in his pocket, comfortable, cozy and warm while everyone else was fighting their way through snow, sleet, and ice.
Aurora nodded quickly before going back into his pocket, peeking out to look at the map that the Captain was studying so intently. Smee came over and stood next to the Captain. Hook sighed turning the map over on his lap making a note of an idea he had for an ambush, “We should be finished combing the island sometime in the next four hours Mr. Smee. Which will get us back to the ship just before sunset.” Smee nodded, his eyes still on the boy who was their guide.
“Capt’n,” Smee said lowering his voice leaning closer to his commander. “He hasn’t said a word, and hasn’t tried to escape once. By now any other lost boy we captured would have tried to bolt and run back to their hideout, he’s up to somethin’ Capt’n.” He said suspiciously, as he watched the little boy playing with two sticks as if he was trying to get a fire going with the way he moved them together.
Hook gave a sigh of annoyance, continuing the work on his map “Of course he has not tried to escape you blundering fool. He wants to be on the ship with Caitlin. What would be the bloody point of escaping when he would only sneak back to the Jolly Rodger and no doubt be caught a second time.” Smee looked up at the boy shaking his head slightly.
“I don’t know Capt’n, I can’t help thinkin’ the boy has mischief he’s just waiting to spring on us.” James leaned back looking up from his map for a moment at the small boy that accompanied them. He sat quietly building a miniature snowman out of the white frozen rain that surrounded them. Using rocks and leaves to make up an expression on its face and dress the round figure. The freckle-faced child was grinning from ear to ear, having great fun.
Hook’s eyes narrowed, “Oh yes, I can see where your suspicions stem from. He is a master criminal waiting to spring his brilliant trap upon us. Notice the way he forms the circles of snow? Certainly a cause for concern, he may start throwing them at us at any moment.” Smee had been first mate long enough to recognize sarcasm when he heard it. Hook picked up the map, swinging his arm about to hand it to Smee hitting him squarely in the stomach. “Get the men on their feet, we are to be on our way immediately.” Smee nodded and hurried to his task.
Hook looked at the boy for another moment. In all honesty, he had the strange feeling as well that the child was more then what he seemed. Perhaps it was his jealousy where Caitlin was concerned causing unnecessary anxiety, or perhaps there was some sort of unforeseen mischief afoot. Either way, the clever Captain was getting what he wanted this day and then he would be rid of the small annoyance and would have Caitlin all to himself.
They continued on in their exploration of the island, finding it a bit odd that not once did they come across another of the lost boys during the entire course of the day. There had been no need to return to their current underground home, its location had already been found and noted from when they had taken Caitlin prisoner. It was excruciatingly cold with the bad weather, and as they were children it was certain they were staying inside trying to keep warm. Hook studied his map noticing patterns in the secret keeps and tunnels that the lost boys had fashioned. With the unseen number of escape routes, they must have had some gopher in their lineage.
Aurora kept a sharp eye as well, but like before, most of her kin where in hibernation with the rest of the magical creatures that inhabited this strange land. They would be sleeping comfortably in the thickets and hollows where their homes were kept. She smiled and sighed in content tucked away in her Captain’s breast pocket. Not only was it warm and extremely comfortable, she could feel each of his heartbeats as they pounded in his chest. Every once in a while a small giggle could be heard, as she could hardly contain her joy in being in a place she had dreamed of for so long.
Just as James had predicted, it was a few hours before sunset when they came to the shore at the other side of the island. There was no stone left unturned as he studied his map, making absolutely certain they had not overlooked any section of Neverland. “Well my dear boy, it seems that you have done your job extremely well. You are to be commended for your energy and the cooperation you have given me and my crew.” Red stood up strait, beaming anxiously anticipating his reward that he was promised for his help. However, the sly Captain gave a nod and the boy was seized so that he would not be able to escape. His small green eyes grew wide and frightened as he looked about at the crew faces before looking back up to the Captain.
“Unfortunately, our contract his henceforth terminated. You have outlived your usefulness to me, and there is no such thing as neutral ground in this tale of woe and utter disappoints known as life in Neverland. You would have to agree that there is no place for you, either on my ship or with your brothers.” The other pirates chuckled and taunted the small child, and tears began to well up in his eyes. “Farewell, foolish boy. Give my regards to the crocodile should you still be alive when she wakes.” Within an instant, the men started to drag the boy off as he kicked and struggled as much as his small body could.
Hook chuckled cruelly before turning his attentions back to his map that held the key to Peter Pan’s capture and demise. They would have quite the reception prepared for the young rouge when he returned from his unwise escapade into the mortal world. Folding the parchment, he tucked it safely away inside his vest pocket, as it had now become the single most important tool in his quest to seek out and destroy Peter Pan. The cocky boy who had cut off his hand and fed it to the crocodile.
“Come Smee, I think it is well beyond time we were home. The sun is setting and it will be excruciatingly cold before very long.” Smee nodded as they started back towards the ship, going slowly until the three who had been sent to lock the boy away where he would not be able to escape or keep warm. Things were going rather well for a change, and James walked triumphant with the feeling of control he had finally regained after a long absence.
Back aboard the Jolly Rodger, Liam sat below decks writing in his surgeons log about the injuries and methods they were treated with over the past few weeks. Each crewman had his own page so that his medical records would be easily found and kept track of. There were many that had been sustained but his eyes kept wondering back to Caitlin’s page. It simply wasn’t right that he had to continually mend a woman who should be completely out of harms way. Honestly the only serious injury she had had, was the cut in her shoulder given to her by one of the lost boys. Hook had not himself caused her any serious physical injury, but the iron hook that replaced his lost hand was more then a formidable weapon he would not easily be relieved of. Liam found a growing concern where there should have been none, but he could not help it.
His was pulled from his studies when a man on deck called out the landing party’s return to the Jolly Rodger. Closing the book, he grabbed his kit and headed upstairs from the infirmary in case someone was injured and needed immediate attention. It was routine and he had always done so since the first day he was named the doctor of the ship.
Smee walked with James who seemed to be in unusually high spirits, rather then his normal sullen and melancholy mood. Looking about the ship he smirked at Smee, “I think the men have been overworked as of late, allow them a full day of leisure as a reward for there efforts these past few days.” His first mate had a look of shock on his face at his commander’s order.
“You want to give the men a day off Capt’n? . . . these men? . . . .the crew?” He said not sure if he had heard correctly. It was something completely out of the ordinary that he could never remember being given before.
“Who else do you think I mean? Give them a day to do what they wish, as they wish it. Is that such a difficult order to fulfill?” He snapped not liking to repeat his orders. Smee shook his head, and turned around looking at the crew who was all watching to see what they were supposed to do next. Go ashore, clean the decks, scavenge for food or wood.
“The Capt’n is givin us the day off gents! No chores or work today, do what ye like wherever ye like!” The men looked around at each other for a moment before looking to Smee. “Tis true! The Capt’n himself ordered it!” The Capt’n was still on deck and all eyes shifted to him. He heard Smee’s words and wasn’t saying anything to discount it, it must have been true. All at once they cheered and scattered. Smee walked back to the Captain, “Is there anythin’ else you’ll be wantin’ Capt’n?”
Hook turned looking up towards his Cabin a smile sweeping his face, a beautiful woman awaited him up those stairs. It had been sometime since he was in such a generous spirit, and there was only one thing he could think of that would make the perfect end to a most profitable day, “I can assure you that your service will not be required for quite sometime.” He said stepping away from his first mate without waiting for a response or saying another word.
What would better end the day then making love to his wife and giving her more pleasure then she had ever known since their wedding day. His generosity was more then willing to reach EVERY aspect of his current life, and he was determined that Caitlin should received the brunt of it. It was a rare occurrence to be sure. Standing before his doors a moment he took a deep breath his smile growing even larger still as he reached for the handle and entered into his chambers.
“Caitlin, I have something that I wish to . . . .” He stopped looking about the cabin, finding an open trunk next to his bed. Stepping inside he closed the door behind him to keep the cold out. Aurora poked her head out to see what was going on when she felt his heart beat change. There were some dresses on the bed, other articles of clothing, and Caitlin’s new journal that he had given her as well. He couldn’t quite understand this as his eyes moved over the sight.
Caitlin suddenly appeared from her closet caring a few things with her putting them into the trunk. She was dressed rather modestly, her hair was pinned up and she wore a warm dress. Her cloak about her shoulders as the gold clasp held it at her neck. “What is this?” He questioned looking at her. Caitlin stopped looking up at him a moment, not having heard him come in, she started to say something but paused and shook her head placing the clothing she carried into the trunk continuing on with her task. James did not like the look of this, nor did he approve of her silence when he questioned her about it. “Did you not hear me woman?” He said walking closer to her, she was packing as one would who was preparing to go on a long trip or simply leave altogether. “ANSWER ME!”
“I can’t stay here James, I want to go home.” She said nervously reaching for the articles that lay on the bed putting them into the trunk before closing the lid and locking the clasps. Hook looked at her for several moments in complete disbelief. Caitlin could not look up at him, afraid of what his response might be and her hands shook slightly as she continued on moving about the bed wanting to leave things in some sort of order.
Aurora’s eyes were wide as she watched the woman. She was leaving? Really!?! Of her own will? This was wonderful! She didn’t expect it to work so soon, or so well. She was certain that Caitlin would discount everything in her dreams as simply dreams instead of facts however true or false they were. Her wings flitted as she watched from her Captain’s pocket to see what would happen.
James just stood there speechless starring at her for a moment, what in the world had brought this on so suddenly? “What do you mean ‘go home’? You ARE home!” Still she would not look up at him as she continued to gather and straiten things trying to be sure she had everything that was hers. “Caitlin we have been over this, there is nothing there for you. It does not even EXSIST anymore, do you understand that?” Walking after her he followed trying to talk some sense into her strange female mind. “How do you think you shall be leaving the ship much less Neverland? If you have not noticed we are in the middle of a winter that makes Siberia look like a blasted garden spot! You would freeze before you even got to the other side of the island.”
She stayed determined and kept her eyes turned away from him continuing on with her tasks, trying to avoid giving in. “Caitlin there is no one there for you, your parents are deceased you have no other kin, you are the only child your parents bore.” She stopped a moment hearing his words keeping her back to him. There was so little she knew about herself, each time he spoke of her past she couldn’t help but listen to him hungrily wanting to know more. He could see her hesitation feeling as if he had stopped her and caught her attention, and took a breath speaking softly. “There is nothing back there for you but misery and loneliness, the very thing I strived to deliver you from by bringing you here to be with me.”
She was struggling with herself, he could see it in her manner, the way she moved how nervous she felt. Suddenly she shook her head and turned picking up a few of her papers from his desk that she had written on before he gave her the gift that would keep her words from now on. Hook grew frustrated, as it seemed he lost the small hold he had gained on her for a few brief moments. He followed after her to try again. “I know you cannot remember, no matter how hard you try you cannot remember anything of your old life. Deep inside of your heart, you know what I speak is true.” Opening the trunk she reached for her new journal and tucked the pages away safely before closing the trunk once more. He couldn’t understand any of this, it seemed as if she didn’t really want to leave. “I am the only link you have to your past, I am your husband the one who looks after you, cares for you, sees to your well being and your happiness.”
Caitlin turned away from him now not wanting him to see the tears starting to well up in her eyes. James couldn’t believe this, it felt like a nightmare like a dream made up of pure horror he could not wake nor escape from. The one person, the one thing that brought him all the joys in the world, was trying to walk out of his life “You cannot do this, do you understand? You can NOT do this.” She started to move away from him, but he caught her arm and pulled her back to him holding her in place. Once again he wished for his hand, for it would be of some great used to him right now. He looked in her eyes, his vulnerability showing through as he searched for words.
“Caitlin you are part of this tragedy now, you must understand that you cannot leave. I regret it more then you know that you will have to suffer as I have suffered. You have to stay in this cursed land as do I, and as do Smee and the rest of the crew. If you find the way back, you will be subject to pain and tortures of your heart and soul you cannot even begin to imagine. This place will pull on you, gnaw on your soul, feast on your suffering until you finally submit to its call . . . and it will change you into something . . . terrible.” She closed her eyes and turned her head away as if trying not to weep, it was quite evident she was scared and he dared to say even terrified. Of what it was she was so afraid of, however, he was uncertain.
“James I cannot . . . I cannot stay, I must go . . . I must . . .”
“You must stay here with me, your husband.” Her eyes closed tighter still as she turned her face away as stubborn and determined as ever. “Caitlin I will not let you go, you will not leave this ship. I forbid you to go anywhere, I FORBID IT!” He shouted desperately not wanting their relationship to dissolve into something cold and unrequited.
Aurora was growing frustrated as well, as her little face frowned and started to turn red. Why couldn’t he just let her go? Freeze to death, drown or go hang herself. She didn’t care as long as she was out of the Captain’s bed and off of the ship so she could have him all to herself.
Caitlin’s eyes remained closed as James looked at her, what was driving her to do this? What tore at her soul so horribly that she would want to leave him who loved her with all the good, however little left, in his body? He studied her face desperately trying to seek out the reason for this onset of madness that risked her very life. Perhaps it was that she had grown fearful of him with his behavior as of late, his heart sunk at the thought this might be the reason for it. “I would never hurt you Caitlin, I would never intentionally cause you pain or strife . . . . I have acted abominably . . .”
Cat swallowed the lump in her throat as she whispered quickly keeping her eyes closed, “James I can’t explain any of this, I can’t explain why I feel I must go . . .” His brow furrowed slightly as her head sank low, as he could almost see her heart breaking a bit.
“You must try, how can I even begin understand this if you do not try?” There was a well of emotions twisting around inside of him and her silence only fed his frustration that much more. She shook her head keeping her eyes closed trying to stifle her sorrow and fears. Finally his emotions mixed into one that always seem to manifest when reason and gentleness didn’t work. Impatiens was like a disease and caused as much damage and devastation. “BLAST IT WOMAN, Why you even bothered to pack your things is a completely misery in itself! You cannot have been so daft as to think I would let what is mine leave! You were brought here as a companion for me, so far you have been a riddle surrounded by a mystery all wrapped up in a question. You cannot leave you do not even know how, and once you found the way your feeble well educated mind would reject it and send you into another fit!” He pushed her away and she tripped falling on top of the trunk that held her possessions.
“I cannot even bare to look at you ungrateful wench! You have no earthly concept or idea of what I have gone through for you! You should count yourself extremely fortunate that you cannot recall your life, for I know what it consisted of and where it was heading!!!” Caitlin took a breath as she pushed herself up turning and looking at him, the tears in her eyes streaming down her cheeks.
“And children! Do you want them as well! For if you do then you chose VERY unwisely in your search for a bride . . .Captain HOOK.” She shouted at him, shaking from head to toe as she looked at him. Shaking her head she turned away from him slamming her fists against the trunk before laying her head down burring her face in her arms as she wept.
Hooks expression changed suddenly looking at her in shock, however his anger still had quite the hold on him. Stepping forward he looked down at you. “Who told you that?” He asked feeling his anger only double that she knew the one thing that had caused her the most pain in her life before. Reaching down he seized her pulling her up and looking into her eyes, “TELL me who imparted such information to you!” She stayed quiet, to distraught and upset to form words anymore closing her eyes and keeping her face turned away from him. His jaw clinched as if preparing to shout again, but he did not. Instead he pushed her away and quickly stood leaving the Cabin, slamming the doors behind him.
