The whole pack was waiting for Jacob outside his house. Sam’s waiting gaze was locked onto him. “She’s still alive,” Jacob informed them as he got out of the car. There was a collective sigh of relief.
“Then what’s the problem?” Sam asked.
Jacob paused a moment. “She’s pregnant.” He blurted out the news. “And it isn’t exactly a normal pregnancy. It’s been three weeks and she looks at least three months along, maybe four.”
Sam snarled. “It’s worse than I thought, then; but I’m not sure what we should do. The treaty doesn’t cover this.”
“No, it doesn’t. But how is this worse? I mean, it is for Bella because it’s taking a huge toll on her, but she chose it.”
“Yeah, she’s choosing to bring a monster into the world,” Sam snapped back. “You remember the newborns—wild, uncontrollable animals. This is going to be worse, and in our own backyard.”
“You don’t know that,” Jacob argued. “We should wait and see for sure. Bella wouldn’t want anyone getting hurt any more than we do, and neither would Carlisle and Liam. They’re our friends now, and we have to trust them.”
“No, we don’t. They’ll probably protect their little monster over us. Then what?”
Jacob didn’t answer right away. He was so furious at that moment he was actually thinking about attacking Sam. It was a good thing they weren’t in wolf form because he wouldn’t want any of them to hear the thoughts that were going through his head. “I can’t believe this. After everything we’ve been through…you didn’t want to attack them this morning, and now you’re all for it!”
“Enough!” Sam growled. “I’m the alpha, and what I decide goes. The only other question I have is, did Carlisle find anything wrong with you?”
Jacob clenched his jaw and shook his head. “I’m supposed to go to the hospital tomorrow morning for blood tests.”
“All right, then.” Sam nodded. “I have a few things I need to do. Let’s all meet here again tomorrow night.”
Jacob was pretty sure Sam had already made up his mind on a plan of action, but they needed Carlisle to figure out what was wrong with him first. It was sick. He could probably postpone an attack by not going, but he knew he needed to get checked out. Not being able to phase was serious business.
Sam was there bright and early, standing on the porch when Jacob came out to go to the hospital. “What now?” Jacob snapped. He was in no mood for another argument.
Sam looked irritated but wouldn’t let it go. “I just need to talk to you before you leave.”
“About?” Jacob asked resignedly as he sat down on the steps.
“About what might be wrong with you. When you told me Bella was pregnant it got me thinking. We didn’t tell you this because we didn’t think it would be an issue, but there’s another wonderful perk to being what we are. When a wolf bonds to another male, something changes in his body chemistry. He can become pregnant. I guess it’s to make sure the gene keeps being passed down.”
Jacob’s whole body went numb and he forgot to breathe for a moment. Then a surge of anger swept over him and he sprang to his feet. “That’s just—that’s so sick,” he said, his face a mask of disgust. “You really think I’m stupid enough to fall for a stupid joke like that?”
“I wish it was a joke,” Sam sighed. “I went to talk to a few of the elders last night after you told me about the problems you’ve been having. A pregnant wolf can’t phase because it would put too much strain on him and the developing offspring. His body is already constantly changing to accommodate the baby. That would explain the stomach cramps.”
“Oh, god!” Jacob cried. His legs gave out and he sat down on the steps abruptly and curled up with his head in his lap. This was too much for a seventeen-year-old to handle. “I…maybe you should drive me.”
“I was planning on it,” Sam said, and he moved to help Jacob into the car.
Jacob silently stared out the window all the way into town. His mind was so cluttered he couldn’t even think straight. Bella’s question kept playing over and over in his mind. What would he do if he were suddenly in her position? He’d never thought he would actually have to answer that question, but if Sam was right, he would—and soon.
When they arrived at the hospital Carlisle was waiting for Jacob by the main entrance. He was a little surprised to see Sam. “You aren’t feeling worse, are you?” he asked Jacob, looking concerned.
“Can we go somewhere private?” Jacob asked weakly.
“Sure,” Carlisle answered.
Jacob turned to Sam. “Please wait here.”
Sam looked like he was going to protest, but finally he nodded. “Fine. I’ll wait in the car.”
“Thank you,” Jacob mumbled, and he followed Carlisle down a few hallways and into an empty exam room. This conversation was going to be awkward enough without having extra people around.
“What did you want to talk about?” Carlisle asked as he closed the door behind him.
Jacob sank into one of the chairs. “I know this is going to sound really fucked up, but before you do anything else I need you to do a pregnancy test.” Surprise flashed across Carlisle’s features. “I told you it was going to sound fucked up. Sam explained a few things to me this morning. Apparently this is just one of the many joys of being a wolf and imprinting on another male.”
“I see.” Carlisle nodded. He seemed to be having a little trouble wrapping his mind around it, too. “Okay, I can do a pregnancy test. Just let me go get one.” He left and came back a few moments later with a small box in his hand.
Jacob eyed the feminine-looking package somewhat dubiously. “You want me to pee on a stick?” He raised an eyebrow. “Man, I—I never thought I’d be doing this.”
“We’ll see what results this gives first; then if it’s negative, I’ll do a blood test to be sure. Go ahead and take one of the cups on the shelf in the bathroom there and pee in it, then bring it back to me.”
Jacob nodded and went into the bathroom. The whole thing was surreal. He did as he was told and moments later handed the little cup to Carlisle, watching interestedly in spite of himself as Carlisle took the test stick out of the wrapper and dipped the end into the cup of pee. In only three minutes Jacob would find out if his life was going to be permanently changed.
Carlisle watched the clock as a tense three minutes passed. He seemed to realize that Jacob wasn’t in the mood for chitchat, so Carlisle didn’t try to engage him in conversation. The silence seemed to stretch out for eons. Finally Carlisle glanced at his watch one last time, then glanced at Jacob and reached for the stick. Jacob wouldn’t have thought it possible, but Carlisle looked even paler than normal as he stared at the result. “It’s positive.”
The room started to spin and Jacob felt himself falling off the chair. A pair of strong, cold arms caught him and gently shifted him to the examination table where he lay for a moment with his eyes tightly closed. Carlisle stood beside him and patiently waited for Jacob to get over the shock.
“Will I end up like Bella?” Jacob asked when he could finally speak again.
“I have no idea,” Carlisle answered honestly. “This is truly a first. I mean, as my brother puts it, you’re a lot more sturdy, so maybe you can handle it. Your wolf gene could offset the rapid growth. Then again, the vampire genes could activate the wolf genes, and you could deliver a giant baby next week—providing you survive.”
“Um, how’s it gonna come out?”
“I don’t know that either. I would think if this trait is in your genetic code there is a way. Your elders might know.”
“Okay. Thanks, Carlisle. Just...please don’t tell Liam. I want to do that.”
“Of course. You think you’re okay to walk?”
“Maybe,” Jacob said. He sat up slowly and swung his feet down to the floor. He was still in shock, but the room wasn’t spinning any more. Carlisle opened the door and walked beside Jacob as he took slow, careful steps. It seemed to take forever to get back to the car.
Sam was waiting for them. “Well?” he asked impatiently.
“You were right,” Jacob answered as he buckled himself in. “The test was positive.”
Sam mumbled something under his breath and started up the car for the drive back to La Push. Jacob suddenly had a new respect for the position Bella was in. The life of an unborn child now rested in his hands too. And the more he thought about it, the more he realized he probably wouldn’t be able to get rid of it any more than Bella could. He was terrified, but also excited. The thing that worried him the most was how Liam was going to react. Liam was a kid in an adult’s body. Would he really want to take care of a baby?
Billy was waiting for them. Jacob guessed someone had said something to him. “Sam was right,” Jacob mumbled, and he collapsed on the tiny couch. He wanted to cry, laugh, and scream all at the same time. The only comfort was knowing why he couldn’t phase, and knowing it wasn’t permanent.
“Now we have two abominations to deal with,” Sam mumbled.
“Abomination?” Jacob’s fists balled up. “Abomination?” He couldn’t believe what Sam was saying. That wasn’t how he felt about the thing growing inside him. He’d only known about it for an hour, and already he was feeling a bit protective of it.
“What would you call it? It’s bad enough Bella and Edward bred something unknown. Now vampire blood is being mixed with our blood. “It’s…it’s blasphemous!”
“There you go again, judging before you know anything!” Jacob cried. “What if neither of the babies even drinks blood? What if Bella’s is just a strong human, and mine is like us?”
Sam snorted. “What are the chances of that? It’s not a risk we can take. We’ll deal with yours first.”
Jacob jumped to his feet. “You have got to be kidding me. Don’t I have a say in this?” He looked to Billy. “Are you going to let him do this?”
“This is worse than you wanting to marry one of them,” Billy answered. “I’m not having some blood-sucking thing in my family.”
“Then maybe I don’t need to be in your family, either,” Jacob growled.
“Jake, listen to reason,” Sam pleaded.
“What you’re saying isn’t reason,” Jacob argued. “It’s fear. I’m not going to stand here and listen to any more of this.” He turned and headed into his room to gather his things.
“You’ll stand here as long as I tell you to!” Sam shouted. Normally he didn’t push his authority like this, but he was determined.
Jacob was just as determined. He hastily threw his belongings in a garbage bag, tears stinging his eyes. He was feeling so much at that moment he felt like he might explode, but strangely enough he didn’t feel any inclination to obey Sam.
He slung the bag over his shoulder and marched out. “I said get back here!” Sam growled.
Jacob stared him straight in the eye, his chest heaving. “Go fuck yourself,” he snarled, and he stormed out. He kept walking, not looking back. He still couldn’t believe it. Two days ago everything had been fine. Now he was pregnant and leaving not only his home, but the pack.
Tears were streaming down his cheeks by the time he reached the Cullen house. Liam was at his side in the blink of an eye. “Love, what’s wrong?”
“Could I stay here for a while?” Jacob asked, his voice cracking with emotion.
“We’ll have to ask Carlisle, though I’m sure it won’t be a problem. But you still haven’t told me what’s wrong.”
Jacob paused just outside the garage. “Liam, Sam’s lost his mind. I think he wants to kill Bella and the baby.”
“Are you sure?” Liam asked, more than a little surprised.
“I’m sure.” Jacob nodded. “He thinks the baby is going to come out a bloodthirsty newborn, and that all of you will let it run rampant and murder the entire town.”
Liam scowled. “Talk about an alarmist.”
“There’s something else.” Jacob wiped his eyes and gathered the nerve to tell him. “I’m pregnant too. When I went to the hospital I had Carlisle do a pregnancy test because Sam told me it was possible. Liam...the test was positive.”
Liam went quiet. Carlisle, who had been standing silently on the porch, came out to join them. He put a tentative hand on Liam’s shoulder. “As crazy as it sounds, he’s telling the truth.” Liam shook off his arm and moved a few steps away. He looked at Jacob for a moment, his face expressionless, then turned and stared off into the woods. He stuffed his hands into his pockets and heaved a sigh, slowly shaking his head as he assimilated Jacob’s news. But to Jacob it looked like a refusal...a denial...a dismissal.
“I knew you didn’t want it!” he cried, and he felt the hot sting of tears and an uncomfortable obstruction in his throat that no amount of swallowing would help.
“Wait a minute.” Liam turned with a frown. “Can I just have a few minutes to process this before you go jumping to conclusions?”
“Sorry,” Jacob mumbled. “I guess I’ve been a little over-emotional today.”
“With good reason,” Carlisle said, trying to comfort him. “Let’s get you inside.” He gave Jacob a little push in the direction of the stairs and turned to his brother. “Are you going to be all right?”
“I’ll let you know in about ten minutes,” Liam answered. He picked up the bag containing Jacob’s belongings and followed the other two inside.
Bella was asleep on the couch when Jacob came in and sat down in an armchair beside her. Her eyes fluttered open and she looked over at him, not saying anything right away. “Jake, you look like hell. What happened?”
“I left the pack,” Jacob answered. The words felt strange on his lips. “I don’t mean to worry you, but Sam sees your baby as a threat.”
Her eyes narrowed and her hands moved to her belly. “That’s ridiculous!”
Jacob snorted. “That’s what I told him. And then I found out that you and I have yet another thing in common.”
Bella thought for a moment, then looked at him with a confused expression. “What else do we have in common?”
“I’m pregnant, Bells.” The more he said it the more real it was starting to become. “I think that sent Sam over the edge. But in answer to your question, I’m going to do the same thing you’re doing.”
Her eyes went wide. “Oh, Jake! That’s…that’s great! I mean, it’s freaky because you’re, you know, a guy; but if you’re not pulling my leg….”
“I’m not,” Jacob assured her. “I found out it’s why I can’t phase. When Sam said something to me this morning I had Carlisle test me.”
“How far along are you?”
“I don’t know. All I know is I’m scared out of my mind.”
“Are you sure you want to do this?” Carlisle asked. “Like I told you this morning, I have no idea what’s going to happen.”
“I’m sure,” Jacob nodded. “I’m scared, but everything that’s happening—what are the odds? It can’t be a coincidence. I’m willing to go on a little faith.”
