A/N: Let's pick up right where we left off with the new princess of the pack.
AmyAnthony pulled into the driveway in a small SUV.
Oh, God. I can’t believe I’m doing this, I thought to myself. It felt different this time. Even though it was painful to do so, I reminded myself of what Randy had done to Daisy. That was why we had to go, and couldn’t come back.
Anthony took long strides to the front door. I hurried to open it before he rang the bell. I’d forgotten how gorgeous he was, and tall. He looked tired, but still gorgeous.
“Hey, you guys ready?” he asked.
I shrugged. “Ready or not, we’re outta here.”
“Okay. It’s good to see you,” he said.
“Um, thanks.” That was unexpected. “Good to see you, too.”
Daisy was next to the door, just out of his view.
“Can you say hi to Anthony?” I asked her.
She shook her head, Anthony poked his around the corner.
“Hi, Daisy. I like your name,” he said to her.
She quickly hid behind my legs.
“It’s okay, he’s nice. Remember?” I said.
She didn’t budge.
“Don’t worry about it, we should go,” I said to Anthony.
Randy coming home to find us with our bags packed would have been bad, him coming home to this scene would have been even worse.
“Can I take something for you?” Anthony asked as I tried to work out carrying my bag, holding Lucky’s leash, and grabbing Daisy’s hand. Lucky was desperate to get outside, since I’d been standing there with the door open, teasing him.
“Yeah, actually. If you could take Lucky, that’d be great.”
When he took the leash from my hand, his fingers brushed mine and I may have liked it, just a little.
Daisy came with me as I retrieved her car seat, my keys, and my drivers license from my car. I supposed if I wasn’t driving it out of here, I’d have to come back just once. I tucked away yet another issue I’d have to deal with later.
I sat in the back with Daisy. If she got upset, I wanted to be right by her side. As we pulled away, instead of looking behind me I concentrated on her. I leaned down, so that my forehead was nearly touching hers.
“I love you, Mommy’s special flower,” I said.
She giggled and reached up to touch my face.
“Squish!” she said, pushing in my cheeks.
I knew I looked like a huge dork when she did that, but it made her laugh so hard.
Lucky was dying to stick his head out the window. He clawed at it, and I tried to pull him back, afraid Anthony would get mad and change his mind about the whole thing.
“Do you want me to put his window down?” Anthony asked.
Daisy’s head snapped up when she heard his voice. I think she’d forgotten who was driving for a minute there.
“Yeah. I’m sorry, I...I don’t think he scratched it,” I said. I was afraid to look.
“Even if he did, I’m not worried about it. It’s just a window.”
He rolled it down, and Lucky got busy smelling the world as it passed by.
“Aw, shit! I forgot his food!” I said.
I’d gotten him some on the way to Mom’s the very first time I ran off, so he had food in two houses but not the one we were going to. Great.
“No biggie,” Anthony said, smiling at me in the rear view mirror. He quickly got out his cell phone.
“What do you usually get him? Dry food, wet?”
“Uh, dry. Just whatever is on sale,” I said.
“Can you think of anything else special you guys need?”
“I don’t think so.”
Lucky started barking at another dog, so I missed a little of what Anthony said next, but somebody was bringing over groceries.
“You guys will be pretty well stocked,” he said.
“That’s really good but...you know I don’t have a job or anything though, right?”
“I know,” he said, unconcerned.
He made a phone call, and told somebody to add dog food to the list, a big bag.
“I don’t have any money either,” I said when he was off the phone. “I won’t be able to give you anything for the food.” It was so embarrassing, I’d never even had my own bank account. All the money was Randy’s, he worked for it and gave me some whenever he saw fit. I literally had nothing.
At a red light, Anthony turned around to look at me.
“I didn’t ask you for anything,” he said with a smile.
“I could get a job, I could start looking tonight. I mean, I’ve never had one but I’m sure I can find something somewhere.”
“If you find something you’d enjoy, then go for it. I wouldn’t worry about it for now. You guys should let yourself get settled first.”
I wouldn’t enjoy it, but I’d be able to pay him back for all this help and not feel like a freeloader.
“I was thinking, you guys would probably be most comfortable at my parents old place. You could have it all to yourself, and it’s really kid friendly. Hey, Daisy. Do you like to swim?” Anthony asked.
She looked over at me, then covered her face with her hands, hiding.
“You can answer him,” I said. I could tell she wasn’t going to, so I did for her. “She does.”
“She’ll love this place then. Daisy, your new house has a pool!” he said.
Our new house? I hadn’t thought of it like that.
Anthony tried to talk to her a few more times, but she just wouldn’t bite.
After a long, long driveway we reached a house that looked like it was more glass than not. I didn’t like it, if Randy came looking for me, he’d be able to see he had the right place way too easily. But we went around it, and the driveway kept on going.
“That’s my grandparent’s old house, we are going right over there,” he said pointing. I couldn’t see it through the trees yet. When I did, I was amazed. It looked like a mansion, it looked like the freaking white house! The flowers, there were so many. I’d never seen such big, brightly colored flowers. It smelled incredible.
“Wow,” I whispered.
The inside was just as beautiful, and fully furnished too. The furniture actually matched, and it was nice.
“It’s all ready for you, the electric and water and all of that stuff are on. The cable is on too,” he explained.
I held Daisy as Anthony showed us around the first floor, Lucky followed close behind. It was so open, there weren’t any doors except on the bathroom. It had, of course, a living room and a kitchen, but also a formal sitting room, and a dining room.
I’d always wanted a dining room. This one had a fire place! While we were in there Daisy wiggled in my arms, so I set her down to explore.
“Just stay inside,” I told her.
All of the rooms were a different color scheme, but they weren’t too in your face. They were perfect.
When I heard the front door open, my heart stopped.
Oh, my God. How did Randy find us so quickly, he must have followed us!
“Where’s Daisy,” I choked out.
He’s going to take her!
“Hey!” a female voice called out. “We bought a little bit of everything!”
“Daisy is right there,” Anthony said, and he was right, she was only three feet away from me.
I couldn’t breathe. Even though it obviously wasn’t Randy, I still couldn’t breathe.
Anthony put his hand on my back. His touch was so gentle, I hardly felt it.
“You’re okay,” he told me.
“I’m okay,” I told myself.
“You’re %100 safe, I promise. This house isn’t even on the map, he would never find you here. Even if he did, if he wanted to get to you guys, he’d have to go through me first.”
He sure did look like he could kick Randy’s ass. I still couldn’t be positive I could trust this guy, yet something in me knew that he really meant that. For the first time since I don’t know when, I felt safe.
I nodded.
“I want you to think of this as your house, I really hope you will make yourself comfortable here. It’s yours as long as you want it, and I won’t ask you for anything in return,” he said quietly.
“But why?” I couldn’t help asking. “I don’t understand. Why do you even care?”
He smiled, and put both of his hands on my shoulders.
“I know that we don’t know each other very well yet, but I can tell you’re special. As you get to know me better, you’ll understand it more.”
He wants us to get to know each other better? That made me get a funny feeling in my stomach, the good kind.
“Come on, I want you to meet somebody,” he said. He lead me to the kitchen, where a girl was putting away groceries. A really hot girl. My heart sank, this had to be the girlfriend. I knew he couldn’t be single, I knew it. She had long black hair, it was so curly and shiny. She was wearing a fitted t-shirt, and a pair of even more fitted jeans with some expensive looking heels that had to cost more than my entire pitiful wardrobe. When she turned around to look at me with those striking blue eyes, I wished I could melt into the floor.
“Hi, Amy!” she said brightly.
“Amy, this is my sister Swan who is never, ever going to come over here without knocking again.”
Sister? Whew!
She shrugged. “You said to bring food, so I brought food. I didn’t think I had to. You’re right though, I’m sorry,” she conceded. “I’ll knock next time.”
“Pizza time!” another female voice called from near the front door. I poked my head around the corner to see a very petite girl with more grocery bags, accompanied by a guy who looked a lot like Anthony, holding a huge bag of dog food.
Anthony rolled his eyes. “Mollie! I know we used to live here, but you have to knock!”
This girl looked a little more like my type. She had black hair also, hers was perfectly straight and came a little past her chin. She was wearing a pair of lounge pants with lightning bolts all over them, and a sleeveless black t-shirt.
“I hear you like pizza, we got plenty of it!” she said.
“I do, thanks,” I said as graciously as I could.
“Amy, this is our sister Mollie, and this is Seth,” Anthony said.
I waved politely.
“Mommy?” Daisy pulled at my pant leg. “I’m hungry.”
“Oh, honey. I’m sorry, you must be starved!”
I hadn’t even realized we had both skipped lunch, and it was well into the afternoon.
Swan found a box of gold fish crackers, Daisy gladly accepted it from her and munched on it as Anthony showed us the rest of the house.
“This used to be my parents room.”
It was decorated in light, calming colors with some accents of gold thrown in.
“It’s really pretty,” I said.
“I thought you’d probably want to sleep in here. It’s the master bedroom, it has the biggest bed,” he said.
“Looks like a king size?” I said.
“Yeah, I think so.”
Oh, my God. He is blushing. This grown ass man is blushing, just talking to me about a bed, and it’s adorable.
“There’s a bathroom in here too,” he added, quickly changing the subject and striding to the corner of the room. “You know, so that if you get up in the middle of the night...you know what a bathroom is. Let’s move on.”
It was a great struggle not to laugh at how cute he was acting.
“I saved the best part for last. Daisy? I hope you like pink,” he said.
She nodded, which was the best response he’d gotten out of her so far.
When he opened the door, the room behind it was every three year old girls fantasy.
“Woah!” Daisy said. She threw the empty box of crackers in the air, ran into the room, and jumped right onto the bed. The bedspread was white with pink hearts, more notably it was surrounded by pink netting.
“Do you wanna sleep there tonight?” I asked her.
“Uh huh,” she said, rolling around in the bed.
I looked over at Anthony and shrugged.
“That was easy!” I said.
“This is Swan’s old room, I was hoping she would like it,” Anthony said with a grin.
Daisy went nuts discovering all of the toys. There was Barbie stuff, My Little Pony, Hello Kitty, all of her favorites. I know they were just toys, but these were the things she had coveted with every TV commercial she saw. Randy had always made me buy her cheap knock off toys that fell apart after a couple of weeks. She used to get so sad when she saw those commercials, and ask for something new to replace a favorite broken toy. He would tell her too bad, it was her own fault that it had broken. I was pretty sure that if he could afford to go out drinking all of the time, he could get his daughter one toy pony.
I pulled my phone out of my pocket and looked at the time. He would be home from work in about an hour, and find us gone. This was usually the time of day I was frantic, making sure everything in the house was perfect. It felt so strange not to be there, like I was missing something really important.
I turned my phone off. I didn’t want to hear from him.
“Mommy!” Daisy whispered. “Look!”
She held up a Barbie in a ballerina outfit.
“Very pretty! You don’t have to whisper though,” I told her.
“That bench under the window is a toy box also,” Anthony told Daisy.
He showed her how to lift up the seat, and get to all the treasures inside as she watched from a distance. When he walked back over to me, then she went over to it and started digging.
“So, are your sister and Seth a thing?” I asked Anthony as we both watched Daisy.
“Oh, yeah. They’re a thing all right,” he answered.
I had to giggle.
“I’m sorry,” I apologized.
“For what?” he asked.
“It’s just that she’s so little!” I whispered.
“Yeah, they do look a little goofy together. Don’t worry, everybody else thinks so too,” he said with a smile.
