“What in the ‘ell are we doin’ out here in the snow again? I thought every man was supposed to ‘ave the day to himselves.” The first pirate said brushing some of the fallen snow off his shoulders and off of his hat.
“The Capt’n wants the boy we left for dead brought back to the ship, live and unharmed. I’d be grateful if that ‘old codfish would make up ‘is mind.” The two pirates continued on trudging through the snow, grumbling with each step at the discomfort they were suffering once more for a whim that changed their Captain’s mind.
“What do we do if the lil’ devil is already an ice block, and froze to death.” The second pirate stopped and looked at his partner a moment, producing a decanter that had been tucked away in his pocket taking a drink before offering it to his associate.
“I can’t speak for ye mate, but I ain’t returnin to the ship any time soon if that be the case. I like me entrails where they be and not spilled out all over the place.” He took the decanter back and had another long pull before closing it and putting it away. “I don’t want to be added to no list of men who died because the Capt’n’s broad acts like mother superior. He must have gone to the deepest circles of hell to find that hellcat.” He sighed as he continued on his way before speaking his thoughts allowed, “What I wouldn’t give to have a woman of me own a waitin for me back on the ship. I haven’t had a woman in so long.”
“That hellcat is pretty enough, but she’s to much trouble for me. I wouldn’t want ‘er on me hands.”
“HA, Give me a few hours with her. She would be singing a whole different song when I got through.” The both laughed understanding exactly what had been said. The light air of the conversation suddenly turned heavy with a disturbing seriousness. “I could change ‘er, all a woman like that needs is a good hard ravaging to put ‘er in her place. Why the Capt’n of all men hasn’t yet given ‘er what she so sorely begs for, I don’t know.”
“’ere now mate. She’s attractive enough to look at and gives the sort of dreams we haven’t had since we were cursed, in the dark hours of the night. I give ye that. But if the Capt’n heard ye talking like that, or see us starring at his woman with such thoughts in yer head, he’d have ye keelhauled and ye know it!”
“He ain’t here and I’ll speak my mind! Everything aboard is divided equally among the crew. Women are bad luck, ALL woman are! This ain’t my first pirate crew I’ve been part of, it is the way things are done among us!” His partner quickly grabbed his arm to stop his ranting.
“Have ye gone mad!?! Don’t ye remember what happened to the last ones who instigated a mutiny and tried to steal from the Hook?” The man pulled his arm away from his partner.
“I’ve not done anything, and it’s not sin for what goes through a mans mind when he hasn’t acted upon it!” Taking a breath to calm himself he shook his head. “He’ll probley want the brat sent back tomorrow. He’s always been a bit unreasonable, but it seems she makes it that much worse.”
“Well come on, the sooner we get the little demon the sooner we get back to a warm fire and hot food. Besides if another storm begins to take shape while we’re out ‘ere, it’ll be us they set out to find.” They continued to grumble and gripe on their mission. There was discontent growing among the crewmembers, and they all attributed the misfortune and abuse they were sustaining on the newest addition to their crew. The Captain’s wife.
Meanwhile aboard the Jolly Rodger, Liam was standing in front of the supply cabinets in the ships infirmary. He wrote notes in his ledger about what he saw making sure everything was in order and well stocked. It was so obviously busy work that one couldn’t mistake the nervousness with which he moved. His pen came to a stop when he heard the click of his door closing. “I knew ye would be down here before long Capt’n.” Closing his ledger he turned to find a silent and very angry looking Hook standing between him and the only way out.
He cleared his throat after a moment of the own fears he had, having seeing this situation before and what had happened to the crewmen who were involved. “My Capt’n cannot really believe I would break his confidence and endanger the Capt.’s wife by straining her health with such knowledge the first time the opportunity presented itself?”
James eye twitched slightly at the words and the nervous smile that crossed the doctors face trying to weasel his way out of this. “There is no other person in all of Neverland besides myself who knew of this devastating secret. I entrusted it to you because you are the physician aboard this ship and it falls to you to see to her health.” His eyes narrowed at the man stepping closer. “ and I return to find you betray me by reminding her and sparking her memory to her lives worse tragedy!?!” He shouted at him kicking over a nearby table that was obstructing his path. It flew through the air with a mighty force hitting the wall hard as James moved closer still. “It greaves me greatly to find the rumors that have found their way to every corner of the ship are true. You want her for yourself and you knew of the one thing that would drive her from me, How DARE you!”
Liam could feel his own knees buckle as he took several steps back, “Capt’n, I ain’t seen your misses since I mended the wound to her shoulder!! She knows her place and her duty is to ye! Even if the rumors that have spread like poison through a crew that is bored and discontented out of there skulls, she would never give heed to any advance other then yours! Capt’n, you must know the mind of your own wife!” He said quickly recognizing the flash of pure rage that shone in the Captains eyes.
“I have stood by theses past few weeks, and watched her weaken under the strain of Neverland as it pulls and tears at her mind. Caitlin had enough to deal with HERE without the horrific memories of her old life returning to haunt her!” The surgeon stood in place, knowing that there was no escape, and if Hook meant to kill him, then kill him he would. Hook walked closer looking him squarely in the eyes, “You may count yourself extremely fortunate, for your knowledge and profession are the only things that keep you from purgatory.” The doctor furrowed his brow looking at the Captain, not quite understanding. James continued on, the tone of his voice indicating that he was in absolutely no mood to trifle. “You are a physician and she will take whatever words you speak to her as gospel truth, as she remembers her old life in the mortal world as nothing more then a vague dream.”
Hook took another step closer, his height and size intimidating in every sense of the word. “You will examine her, and make quite the production in doing so. Once you have finished, you will announce to my wife that her fears are completely unfounded. That she is perfectly normal and everyway, and she is just as any other woman.” The doctor was speechless for the plan Hook had devised, actually ordering him to lie to the distraught woman upstairs.
“But. . . Capt’n, . . .she cannot . . . the horrific accident you described to me . . .the wounds she had sustained . . . it’s simply impossible that she would be able to conceive . . .” he said speaking quickly, feeling as if more damage would be done by this then dealing with the issue outright.
“DO NOT, question my orders! You are in quite enough trouble of your own and if you wish to save your skin you had better do as I command without complaint! What she can or cannot do does not matter. What is important is that she believes she can. I have read the words and sentences that flowed from her mind and heart, through her hand and filled page after page. . .” He stopped suddenly, deciding it really wasn’t any of this man’s business. James was certain that he knew what would be best for her, and he was convinced this was the way to make her happy. “You shall convince her of this, or you will die for your indiscretions and insolence. These are your only two choices in this matter, and I would suggest that you choose wisely.” James turned and started to leave feeling his point was made and his orders clear, but Liam stepped forward.
Liam did care for Caitlin, and there had to be something he could do that would not involve lying to her. “Capt’n, there must be another way then giving her a false hope. Could ye not speak with her? Tell her that ye don’t care, that she means more to ye then what her body can or cannot do . . .”
“DO NOT COUNCIL ME IN THE AFAIRS OF MY MARRIAGE!!” James roared looking at the surgeon. Liam instantly grew silent taking a step back. “You will do as I say, no more and no less and the rest of the situation is mine and is no concern of yours.” His eyes narrowed again, as his teeth started to grind. Letting this man live was not something that he had any wish to do, he despised the feeling of having to compete with others to be the one that Caitlin went to for comfort. However he needed him to help ease Caitlin’s mind before she was sent the rest of the way over the edge. “I will be sending for you later this evening, I suggest that you take this time to practice so that she believes what you tell her. If she does not, you will be dead before morning. Am I clear?”
Liam swallowed the lump in his throat and nodded, “Perfectly.” He said not wanting to invoke the Captain’s wrath any further then it had already been. Hook turned and left the infirmary slamming the door behind. Smee had been waiting just outside in the hallway. Hook walked past his first mate, “See that he is watched. I do not want him anywhere near Caitlin without a guard.” “Aye Capt’n.” Smee replied solemnly, the fact that he was uneasy was crystal clear in his tone.
James went out on deck, finding first light was about to be upon them. He knew full well that he would have to talk to Caitlin, but he dreaded it. The only way he saw this situation could be fixed was with a large collaboration of lies. She was the one person he had no desire to deceive and lie to. It couldn’t be avoided, if Neverland wasn’t such a demanding and cruel master he would have had the time to win her heart that she might come willingly and been well aware of the entire situation had it not called them back.
Meanwhile, the two pirates had begun their journey back to the ship, dragging along a cold and shivering child with them. “Wrap ‘em up in another blanket, or he’ll be wrapped up in a sheet by the time we get him back to the ship.” The first pirate said tossing his partner the last of their extra clothing.
“We’re gonna have to carry the little blighter, he’s slowin us down and another storm could hit at any time.” The larger of the two picked him up and leaned him over his shoulder, much in the same fashion Hook had carried Caitlin when he was forced to knock her unconscious in the black castle. “This is ridiculous. Why in the ‘ell does he want this bloody boy back on the ship? He ‘ates children.” They shook their heads moving faster now wanting to get back to the ship as quickly as possible.
Slowly, the door of the Captain’s cabin opened, and James stepped inside closing the door behind him. He was in desperate need of a drink, but didn’t dare after what had happened the last time he had an overwhelming amount of alcohol in his system. Without saying a word he moved inside looking about trying to see where the distraught woman he had left by herself a few hours ago, who had been drowning in the tears of her sorrow had moved to. His eyes caught sight of her sitting on the ledge next to the blue stain glass windows, starring out into the white darkness of the snow-covered landscape. If she knew of his presence, she did not acknowledge it.
Hook took a few more steps towards her as he took off his hat throwing it aside along with his large winter overcoat he wore. Cautiously and quietly he walked behind her, putting his good hand on her shoulder giving her a comforting touch. “Caitlin, it does not matter to me. It does not change the way I look at you, or how I feel. Nor does it take away from your worth, for you mean the world to me and I would never trade you for any other.” His voice was gentle and soft, and his words were full of tenderness. However he had read her journal from cover to cover, and knew that it would not be enough. It would always be something that was going to tear at her soul and heart, just as he had demons that could not be satisfied for very long with a few simple words or touches. Caitlin remained silent, looking out the window lost in a sea of confusion, anger, and sorrow.
“James . . .” she began after a while had passed. He listened to hear what it was she had to say, hoping it was not another request to leave. “ . . . did you know of this before we were married.” She said quietly, her voice shallow as her emotions seemed to be frozen for the time being. James moved from behind her, and sat beside her on the window ledge moving his hand to lay atop one of hers still trying to comfort her however he could.
“Why would that matter, Caitlin?” He asked softly, not liking where this was going. Hook looked intently into her face as he saw her eyes downcast avoiding looking at him, as if she felt unfathomable shame that he now knew her secret.
“Please James, you must tell me.” She said softly keeping her eyes turned away from his. Looking over her face, he recognized the look of a storm raging deep inside of her heart. He had been determined he would not lie to her anymore then he had to, and he would answer her truthfully.
“In all honesty, no I did not. It was not until after we were wed that I happened upon this knowledge.” He said softly looking at her. Her pain seemed to double in the few sentences he spoke as if his words crushed her heart into dust. She closed her eyes and turned her face away covering her mouth with her hand trying to muffle her weeping. It was not a reaction he wanted and quickly he slid closer to her wrapping his arms about her holding her tight, minding his hook so he did not harm her. “Do not weep my love, please.”
“It isn’t fair to you James, you should have had a chance to . . . find someone who could . . .a woman that was . . .” She sighed unable to continue keeping her face away, taking a deep breath she pushed her words out in a quiet whisper, “I am not fit to be married James, to be anyone’s bride.” She whispered keeping her face turned away.
“Now, I will have none of that. I will not have you talk in such a way.” Reaching up with the flat his hook he carefully turned her face towards his looking into her eyes, “Do you honestly think that your ability to bare offspring would have influenced my decision? I chose you because I love you.” He looked into her eyes as he brushed the hair back from her face with his hook. “I have seen you fight, your compassion, and your sharp wit that makes you far better a companion then any other aboard my ship or in all of Neverland or any other place where human life dwells.” He moved closer to her ear and whispered gently, “And may I say, that I have never experienced the deep pride that wells up inside my soul, each and every time I find I may claim you my wife.” Slowly Caitlin turned her eyes up to look at her Captain, his words finding there way through to her. He smiled tenderly and kissed her forehead holding her close to his chest.
Aurora was still in his pocket, he had mostly forgotten about the small creature and had not yet bothered to returned her to her cage. Listening to all of this she couldn’t help but roll her eyes in total disgust at this entire scene. Just let her go nuts! Let her cry herself to death; let the hellcat tear herself up, and loath herself for being so different from any other female. Aurora liked it better when her Captain was giving orders, commanding the crew, and killing all that opposed him. She thought the effect this human had on him when they were alone together in his cabin was an absolute abomination. She was like a poison! When her eyes closed tonight, she would have the nightmare to end all nightmares, Aurora swore it.
Hook stroked Caitlin’s hair gently, running his fingers through her curls still holding her close. Finally feeling her start to relax into his embrace and allowing him to comfort her. “I dreamed about it James.” She whispered softly to him.
James wasn’t sure exactly what she was referring to. “Dreamed about what my dear?” He questioned about her odd comment.
She took a breath closing her eyes, “I dreamt a horrible dream, and when I awoke from it I remembered. I remembered being told that I would never have children.” She sighed as more tears escaped her eyes. James thought it strange that she would dream such a thing, he had noticed how fitful her sleep had been since she returned to the ship but wasn’t sure what was causing it. In any case, it would seem that the doctor was cleared of the suspicion against him.
“What sort of things do you dream about Caitlin.” He whispered wanting to get to the bottom of this. Her eyes opened as she thought remembering some of the horrible nightmares that she had been trapped in as of late.
“Horrible things. Death, the strange creatures that you showed me that dwell in the waters below us, other creatures that may dwell in this land all wanting me to leave. Wanting me to die, saying that my being here is wrong.” She whispered. Hook’s eyes narrowed, wondering what on earth would be putting such images into her mind. Perhaps Neverland wanted to do to her what it had done to him, turning him mad with anger and hate. They both just stayed silent for a few moments, as he just held her close comforting her however he could.
“I want the surgeon to examine you Caitlin.” He said finally breaking the silence. Caitlin turned her eyes up towards his face with a look of utter confusion. Hook sighed looking at her, “I want to hear the words myself, I want a doctor to tell me this is true and not a mistake made by whoever told you such a dreadful thing.”
“But James how could it not be true, I can feel it, it must be true. . . ” Shaking his head he reached up putting his finger across her lips to silence her words.
“Do not argue with me, and lets not be hasty in assuming anything. As for your dreams, well they are just dreams. Take them at face value and nothing more.” Slipping his finger under her chin he turned her face up towards his and rested his forehead against hers and whispered a vow, “I will not let anything or anyone harm you. I could not stand to be parted from you or to have you taken away from me again.”
Just then Smee knocked on the door, and poked his head inside, “Capt’n. They’ve returned.” He said simply. Hook nodded before waving him off out the door looking down at Caitlin.
“My love, I have tasks that I must perform. I would like you to rest while I am gone, if you find yourself capable of rest.” He whispered into her ear. Caitlin’s eyes shifted up towards his a moment, before shaking her head letting him know she didn’t think it was possible. “Alright, but I will bring the doctor back with me when I return, so that we know for certain this is a reality and not just an unfounded fear.” She sighed as her eyes turned downcast yet again and she quietly nodded, letting him know she would submit to his will.
“Now do you think you might unpack your belongings my dear? Perhaps stay awhile and let us explore life together rather then running from what frightens us?” James asked her quietly brushing the locks of hair back from her face. Taking a breath she nodded again keeping her eyes turned away from him. It wasn’t very much, but it was all he could ask for at the moment and it was enough that she said she would stay. Unfortunately he knew it was because he had asked her to, not because she wanted to stay. He kissed her cheek before rising, “Try to rest my dear, I shall return as quickly as I can.”
James left the Cabin seeing Smee waiting for him on the frozen deck shivering from head to toe. “Well? Where is he?” He questioned walking past Smee to the stairs that led below decks.
“He’s in the infirmary with the Doc Capt’n. The lil’ devil was nearly frozen and ‘is lips were blue.” Hook gave a loud sigh of annoyance at this news. “Oh don’t worry Capt’n, doc says he’ll live he just needs some rest and hot food in ‘im and he’ll be as good as new.”
“See that he has everything that the Surgeon says he requires. Personally I do not care if the vermin dies or not, however Caitlin seems to have grown some sort attachment to him.” This was an unexpected turn of events; Smee couldn’t help but stare at the Captain in disbelief. “Capt’n?” He questioned completely dumbfounded.
Hook stopped at the door of the infirmary turning back to Smee, why was it he always had to explain in great detail his thoughts and plans to his first mate. “A pet she wants, then a pet she will have.” He said simply before slipping inside of the infirmary slamming the door behind.
