Jacob woke to light streaming through the window. He took in a deep breath and stretched out to find the large bed empty. Had the whole thing been nothing but a terrible dream? He sat up and looked around, frowning when he saw the garbage bag in the corner by the closet.
He propped himself up on the pillows and glanced down at his still-flat belly. It was hard to believe there was an unborn child in there, but the test had been positive. Sam was sure enough to break up the pack over it.
With a deep sigh Jacob got out of bed and made his way downstairs. Bella was asleep on the couch with Edward still right beside her and Rosalie not far away in a chair. It seemed those two never left Bella’s side. Jacob wished he could say the same of Liam with him.
Liam was in the kitchen grinding up herbs in a large black marble mortar and pestle. “How’d you sleep?” he asked, not looking up from his task.
“Okay, I guess.” Jacob shrugged.
“How are you feeling?”
“Fine.” Jacob had expected this from his mate, but it was still disappointing. He took a seat at the table and watched Liam quietly.
“Jacob….” Liam sighed and whirled around to face him. “I know what you want, but I can’t give it to you. What’s really starting to piss me off is that you seem to think it means I don’t care.”
“Liam—”
The blond vampire cut him off with a wave of his hand. “Just listen.” Liam moved to sit beside his mate at the table. “I’ve been around for over three hundred years, and all that time I knew I would never have a family other than the one my brother made for himself. I made peace with that a long time ago. I knew I probably wouldn’t be a good father anyway, because I didn’t exactly have a shining example. Then last night you come here telling me you’re pregnant, something not even your own pack saw coming.” He reached out with a cold hand to grab Jacob’s and gave it a light squeeze. “I just need time.”
Jacob squeezed back. “I guess I understand. And for what it’s worth, I think you’ll be a great father. The way I see it, you had an excellent example of what not to do.”
Liam chuckled softly. “I suppose that’s one way to look at it. Last night after you went to bed I had a little chat with my brother. He said he would help us any way he can. I think he was more of a father to me than my sperm donor was. But enough of this gloomy subject. What would you like for breakfast?”
Before Jacob could answer his stomach turned and he suddenly felt sick. Seconds later he rushed over to the sink and emptied out what was left in his stomach from the day before. Liam was by his side, rubbing his shoulder to try and comfort him.
When the heaving finally stopped Jacob wiped his mouth and straightened up. “And here I was hoping I would be lucky enough to avoid that part,” he mumbled. His ears perked up when he heard the sound of a truck engine coming closer.
“Carlisle!” Rosalie’s voice rang out from the living room.
Jacob hurried out to the living room to see what was going on. He instantly recognized the blue truck pulling into the driveway and put a hand on Carlisle’s shoulder to stop him. “Let me take care of this.” Carlisle looked unsure but stayed where he was near the door while Jacob headed out to the porch to greet Seth and Leah. “What are you two doing here? If Sam sent you to drag me back—”
“Relax,” Leah said as she leaned against the truck with her arms crossed. “Sam didn’t send us.” She said the alpha’s name with venom in her voice.
“Yeah,” Seth nodded. “We came all on our own. I think what Sam’s doing is wrong, too. Edward is my friend, and I know he wouldn’t let anyone get hurt if he could help it.”
“And you?” Jacob’s gaze turned to Leah. It was no secret that she hated the vampires with a passion.
Leah shrugged. “I decided I’d rather follow you.”
It took a minute for Leah’s words to register. “Whoa, wait a minute…who said anything about anyone following me? I’m not an alpha.”
Leah laughed. “Have you already forgotten you were supposed to be the alpha? You’re Ephraim Black’s direct descendant.”
“Yeah, but I renounced that in favor of Sam.” Jacob was thoroughly confused. He’d never wanted to be leader. He didn’t want to have to make the kinds of decisions Sam had to make every day. He always respected Sam for that; he just happened to think their leader was wrong about this.
“You must have changed something when you defied him yesterday.”
Seth nodded. “Last night I told Sam he was wrong, and I was with you on this one. Then all of a sudden I was cut off from the rest of the pack. I couldn’t hear them anymore. It was kinda nice—till my sister had to ruin it, anyway.”
Leah rolled her eyes. “When I realized what had happened I knew I finally had a choice. I chose you.”
Jacob shook his head. This whole thing was a huge mess. He’d never meant to split up the pack when he left. He’d only wanted to protect Bella, Liam, and his own unborn child. “This isn’t right.”
“But I wanna follow you.” Seth frowned. “I wanna help.”
Leah remained quiet, though Jacob was beginning to have some idea what was behind her choice. She wanted to be away from Sam. “Fine,” Jacob sighed. “If you two really want to help, you can run perimeter around here. Sam is at a major disadvantage now, but he still might try something. I’d keep a lookout myself, but….”
“Little Spike won’t let you,” Seth finished the sentence for him.
Jacob raised an eyebrow. “Little Spike?”
Seth laughed and nodded. “That’s what I decided to call it for now.”
Jacob laughed and shook his head. “Just go. I’ll tell the Cullens what’s going on.”
“Yes, sir!” Seth and Leah said simultaneously. They stripped, tossing their clothes into the truck, before phasing and running off.
Jacob turned to go back inside and found Carlisle standing right behind him. “I really need to get some bells to put around your necks.”
Carlisle laughed and leaned against the railing. “I see you have more allies than you thought you did.”
Jacob nodded. “I hate that this is causing so much trouble, but I’m kind of glad I have those two on my side.”
The smell of eggs and sausage wafted from the kitchen and Jacob let out a soft moan. Before he knew it his legs were carrying him into the kitchen. A sausage and cheese omelet was waiting for him on the table. “I thought you might be hungry.” Liam gave him a soft smile.
Jacob’s stomach answered for him by growling. Liam laughed and poured him a glass of orange juice while Jacob dug into the plate of food. He downed the juice in one big gulp and leaned back in the chair. “Still feel okay?” Liam asked.
“Yeah, why?” Jacob asked. The nausea from earlier was completely gone. “You should probably make one of those for Bella when she wakes up. She looks like she could use it.”
“I made her a pot of special tea.”
Jacob shot Liam a confused look. “She needs more than just tea.”
“I know.” Liam frowned and moved to sit by his mate. “But there’s a problem with that.”
Another complication. “What problem?”
Liam was quiet for a moment. “The tea is all she can keep down. It’s keeping her alive, but that’s all it’s doing. The fetus isn’t getting any benefit. We can’t figure it out.”
Sam’s words echoed in Jacob’s head. What if his fears were true? What if that thing inside her wasn’t human? Liam suddenly got a thoughtful look in his eye. “Now, there’s a thought….”
“It’s certainly worth a try,” Edward said from the doorway.
“What’s worth a try?” Jacob asked. He hated it when others were in his head, but at least with the pack he could hear them too, and he could get away from it once in a while.
“Sorry, love.” Liam reached out and lightly stroked Jacob’s cheek. “But I was just thinking Sam may be right. Carlisle can’t examine it, so we don’t know whether the fetus is more human or vampire.”
“There’s that big a difference?”
Liam nodded. “I’m not really sure of the details, but I guess our DNA changes.”
“Maybe I’d better explain this,” Carlisle said as he entered the kitchen. “Did you study chromosomal pairs in school?”
Jacob tried to think. “It sounds familiar. Chromosomes are what determines gender, right?”
“Well, yes, they do that.” Carlisle nodded. “Humans have twenty-three. They come together to make up the genetic code. Vampires have twenty-five.”
“Huh. I wonder how many I have.”
“Twenty-four. Sorry, curiosity got the better of me last June while I was treating you.”
Jacob shrugged. “It’s okay. I can’t blame you for being curious.”
“Anyway….” Liam sighed. “If that little bundle of joy is like us, what it wants is....”
“Blood.” Jacob frowned, and suddenly he was queasy again. Was this what he had to look forward to?
“Possibly.” Liam answered the unspoken question. “We’ll watch to see how you do. So far you’re doing fine with food.”
Jacob couldn’t help but wonder how he would cope if he had to drink blood all throughout his pregnancy. “Let’s hope I stay that way.”
They all headed out to the living room to explain their theory to Bella. She didn’t seem thrilled with the idea, either, but agreed to try it. If Jacob hadn’t been in a very similar situation he’d have found her devotion to the thing a little morbid. As it was, he kept thinking about what he would do if he was faced with the same situation. Could he do it?
Carlisle left, and minutes later he brought out a lidded styrofoam cup with a straw. Jacob knew instantly what was inside it. He wanted to stay there for Bella, so he tried not to think about what she was doing. But the liquid inside the cup sloshed when Bella took it, and the smell wafted through the air.
“I’m sorry,” Jacob mumbled and he raced out onto the porch and leaned over the railing. After gagging a few times he took slow, deep breaths to steady himself. Liam was beside him again, rubbing his back. Liam may not be jumping for joy, but at least he was being supportive, and for that Jacob was grateful.
As soon as Jacob regained his composure he headed back inside to see how Bella was doing. She’d finished the cup and her color had already improved. “What does this mean?” Jacob asked.
“I won’t know exactly for a few hours,” Carlisle answered. “But for now it looks promising.”
A part of Jacob was happy for Bella. He didn’t want to watch her waste away any more than anyone else did. But if a vampire was growing inside her, what were they going to do? Unlike Sam, Jacob trusted the Cullens to do the best they could to keep anyone from getting hurt, but could a baby vampire be controlled?
Jacob also couldn’t help but wonder what was growing inside him. His instinct was still to protect it, but could he actually handle this? He would worry about it now until they found out for sure. He hoped his sudden aversion to blood was a good sign.
His ears perked up at the sudden howl that pierced the quiet: Seth had seen something. Jacob rushed toward the sound, running into the woods behind the house. It was probably a dumb thing to do, but he was used to acting before thinking.
He found Seth and Leah facing off with a group of guests who had just arrived. Jared stood in human form with Paul and Quil behind him as wolves. Jared had his hands up. “We come in peace. I just want to talk, Jake.”
Jacob crossed his arms. He could sense Liam nearby, and apparently so did Paul and Quil because their hackles were up. “So talk.”
“Sam thought about what you said yesterday. Once he calmed down he realized you were right. There’s no need to go after Bella, especially since we don’t know anything for sure.” Seth barked in agreement. “We really want you three to come back. We aren’t meant to be divided like this.”
Jacob frowned. “He should have thought about that before he went off the deep end yesterday. Now there are two alphas, and that’s one too many.”
“You could renounce it again or something. I’m sure we can figure it out.”
Jacob shook his head. “I’m not sure we can. This has never happened before, so no one knows what to do here. Besides, I’m not sure I want to be under his control anymore.”
“What about them?” Jared motioned to Seth and Leah. “At least let them go home. Sue misses them a lot. Are you going to make her suffer over this?”
Leah growled, apparently angered over this shameless appeal to emotion. Jacob shrugged. “I’m not keeping them here. They came here of their own free will, and they can leave whenever they like.”
Jared sighed in defeat. “At least I tried. We really don’t want to fight with you. I guess I’ll see you around, maybe.”
“Yeah, maybe.” Jacob nodded. “I don’t want to fight with you, either, but I will if I have to.”
Jacob watched his former brothers leave, wondering if he would have to fight them the next time they met. It felt wrong, but it also seemed like this was the way things were supposed to be; at least that’s was what Jacob told himself.
“Thanks, guys,” he said, turning to Seth and Leah. “Just keep watching, I guess, in case they come back.” He turned and went back to the house, figuring they were safe for now. Liam was following the pack members to make sure they left. If they did try to launch a surprise attack, Liam would warn Carlisle and Edward.
