Anthony
I could hardly believe it. My beautiful Amy was here, in my old house. Now it would be hers, soon it would be ours. My parents were all too happy to let us have it. I was glad that I’d thought ahead and gotten it ready. When I came a couple weeks earlier, it looked abandoned, just as it had been for years. Asa and I had gotten the outside ready with his gift, and help from a power washer. I cleaned, while he went back and forth killing weeds, and bringing Mom’s long dead flowers back. There was plenty of landscaping in the back for him to work on, plus the pool was in sorry shape so that took a lot of work. I wanted it to be pristine and ready for fun on the very first day. On the inside we did a lot of dusting, and added some fresh coats of paint to a few walls that looked faded. It kept me busy, and made me more hopeful about our future. I felt really good when the house was ready.
I knew things would happen quickly when Amy left, but it still took me by surprise. Aunt Alice called my cell phone. She skipped saying hello and went right into it.
“She’s about to call you, go get the phone.”
I don’t think I even hung up my cell before running downstairs to get the house phone. I was so happy to hear her voice at first, but it was difficult to hear how upset she was.
After we hung up, I was ready to jump out of my skin, literally.
“Anthony!” Mom called as I was taking off my clothes.
“Don’t phase, you said you would pick her up. Take my car, there will be more room for their things.”
“Oh, right.”
Mom and I had already decided that it might be best if she and Dad waited to meet Amy until she knew the truth about us. I would have had to tell her they are my siblings or cousins, and I didn’t want to ever lie to her if I could avoid it.
I took the keys from Mom, and passed by Mollie and Seth on my way out.
“Guys, will you bring over groceries?”
There were a few things there, not many because I wanted them to have fresh things, not stale and expired. They would already have some canned stuff, since that couldn’t go bad, but they would need a lot more.
“Yeah, what should we get?” Mollie said standing up.
“Um, I dunno basic stuff. Bread, milk, cereal, snacks, little kid food, they need all of that. Amy likes pizza. She likes pizza and shrimp.”
I shouldn’t have been surprised that Swan felt the need to be involved, too. She meant well, but I was going to have a talk with her about scaring the crap out of Amy like that.
As Daisy discover girly toy, after girly toy, I’d never been so happy that my sister had been spoiled. To be honest though, a lot of the things were brand new and just for her, from me. After the pack had spent so much time over there, I had a decent idea of the things she liked.
Amy had been a little harder to buy for. She spent most of her time trying to tip toe around Randy, or taking care of Daisy. I knew for sure she loved music, so I got a top of the line stereo for the bedroom and an MP3 player. I wasn’t sure how she’d feel about being showered with gifts, but I’d figured out a way to do it without her knowing. She hadn’t found the MP3 player yet, but when she did I planned on casually telling her one of us must have forgotten it here, and she could just have it for herself. That worked for now, I was excited for the day to come when I could do it openly.
Seth came upstairs to tell Amy that he had let Lucky outside.
“Cool dog you got there,” he said.
She smiled and nodded. “Yup, that’s my buddy,” she said.
“You guys are all stocked up!” Mollie said, popping out from behind him.
“We’re gonna head out,” Seth said. “We are going out to the beach, and Swan has play practice tonight.”
Before they all left, Swan showed Daisy a couple of her old favorites that she had somehow missed. It didn’t escape my notice that she would talk to Swan, but not to me. I tried not to let it hurt my feelings, I could hardly blame the kid for being wary of a me. I knew I must have looked a little scary to her.
I walked them downstairs, and told Seth to keep one wolf watching Randy, and one over here. Now that Amy and Daisy were safe with me, we could let our guard down a little, but if he tried to come after them, there was no way we’d be taken by surprise. He’d be wolf chow before he ever made it onto the property.
“Xandra is already around here somewhere,” Seth said.
“Perfect,” I replied.
I took Swan aside. “Hey, you gotta be careful around her, she is really jumpy.”
“Yeah, I noticed that,” she said, looking a little guilty.
She promised to spread the word that anyone who came here had to call first, and knock when they got here.
When we had the house to ourselves again, I made sure all the doors were locked, then went back upstairs. Before I got to Swan’s old room, I found Amy in the room with all the medical equipment. She looked up when I walked in.
“Sorry,” she said.
“For what?”
“I didn’t mean to be nosey, I just wondered what was in here.”
“You aren’t being nosey at all, you can be in whatever room you want.”
She smiled and looked down.
“It’s not like this is Beauty and the Beast,” I added.
Okay, that may have been a bad example.
I hadn’t decided on how to tell her that I wasn’t exactly human. I thought I would start by telling her our legends, the ones that were actually true, weave my family’s story in there and see how she reacted.
“Even if you were nosey, I wouldn’t care. Swan won’t admit it, but she can be pretty nosey herself. She’s sweet though.” I said.
“Her room is amazing. I left Daisy in there and I don’t think she even noticed that I’m gone.”
“I’m glad she likes it,” I said.
“So...what’s this room? Was somebody sick?”
“Not exactly. My mom was into the home birth thing, but she still wanted it to be safe. So with this stuff she kinda got the best of both worlds,” I explained.
“You were born in here?” she asked, eyeing the equipment.
“Yup.”
“Wow, that’s really cool.”
“We were all born in here, except my brother. We lived in Alaska when he was born.”
“So there’s you, Swan, Mollie and your brother...” she said counting us off on her fingers.
“Asa. Plus Xandra, too. She’s Mollie’s twin. They are identical, but Xandra is taller. She’s the one who was born first. She’ll probably tell you that herself, she likes people to know,” I said with a laugh.
“Wow, five?” she said, eyebrows raised.
“This was a full house back in the day.”
Speaking of, we heard little feet in the hallway.
“Mommy! Mommy!”
Daisy appeared in the doorway, looking very distraught with her knees together.
“This way,” Amy said, hurrying her down the hallway.
It seemed like she made it to the bathroom just in time. Amy praised Daisy for letting her know when she had to go.
“Can I come in?” I asked once I heard the sink turn on.
“Of course,” Amy answered.
As she was helping Daisy wash her hands, I started going through the closet.
“Yes!” I said when I found what I was looking for. “Maybe you guys can use these.”
I handed Amy a sheet of stickers.
“My mom used to give us these for potty training.”
We’d all gotten the hang of it pretty quickly, so there were a ton of them left.
“Wow, and they are still here? That’s awesome. What do you think, Daisy?”
Her reaction was not what I expected.
“No!” she said loudly, then put her hand over her mouth. “Daddy say no stickers!” she whispered, looking very worried.
Amy pressed her lips together.
“Would you mind leaving us alone for a minute?” she asked me.
I went downstairs to give them some privacy, the illusion of it anyway since I could still hear everything. I felt sort of bad about that, but I couldn’t help it.
“Now that we are here, we don’t have to follow Daddy’s rules anymore. I don’t mind that they are sticky, and I think it would be just fine if you play with them. Would you like to get one every time you use the potty? Wouldn’t that be fun?”
I assumed Daisy had nodded.
“I think so, too. Wasn’t that nice of Anthony to let us have these? See, I told you he was nice!”
I smiled to myself.
I listened as Daisy picked out a sticker, and told Amy she wanted it on her shirt. She then asked for some more crackers.
“How about some real food?” Amy suggested. “Let’s have some dinner.”
I hid my excitement when Amy asked if I would stay to eat with them.
She stood in front of the fridge, trying to decide what to make. If anyone else had kept both the fridge and freezer doors open for so long, just staring, I might have found it annoying. When she did it though, it was cute.
“It’s been years since I actually got to pick what to make for dinner!”
How sad, but she’d be able to do whatever made her happy for the rest of her life.
“There’s a bunch of TV dinners in there if you don’t feel like cooking,” I suggested.
I figured since she’d practically been a slave, she might enjoy something easy.
“Ooo perfect,” she said.
We all picked out a dinner that included a small dessert, and some vegetables. They were ready in no time, and the three of us sat at the kitchen table to eat. It was funny the way Daisy left her peas until last. She frowned at them, and rolled them around in the little compartment.
“I like peas, do you want my corn instead?” I offered.
She looked at her peas, then my corn, then at Amy.
“Go ahead, you can trade him if you want.”
I smiled as she ever so slowly dragged my tray over to herself, watching me out of the corner of her eye the whole time.
After dinner I showed Amy and Daisy the backyard.
“Wow, what a great pool,” Amy commented.
“I don’t suppose you guys have swim suits with you?”
She shook her head.
“We don’t even own any. We’ll be fine with shorts and tank tops or something.”
“Are you sure? We could order some and probably have them the day after tomorrow.”
“No, no,” she said quickly. “We’ve got food and shelter, we are good.”
Too bad. After seeing her safe and happy, seeing her in a swimsuit was next on the list of things I wanted very much!
“Thanks for that, by the way. I can’t remember if I said it yet, so thanks,” she said, looking at her hands.
“You’re very welcome, I’m glad to do it.”
While we talked, Lucky and Daisy walked around the pool together until he had sniffed every inch of the perimeter. When it started to get dark, we went inside and I showed Amy how to order pay per view movies, and use the cable box.
“I’m guessing you don’t watch a lot of kids movies, huh?” Amy said as she scrolled through them, looking for one for Daisy.
“Nah, don’t really have the opportunity to.”
“Believe it or not, some of them are actually pretty good!”
She was right. We watched one that had Daisy giggling, and was pretty amusing for Amy and me too.
When she tucked Daisy into her new bed, I could hear Amy teaching her to say my name. She had a lot of trouble, but could say A.J. with no problem and that would be just fine by me.
“Do you think we should stay here again tomorrow?” Amy asked, then responded, “Me too.”
“Daddy coming here?”
“No. Daddy is never, ever coming here.”
Amy stayed with her for a little while longer. I noticed she took a moment to look out every single window on the way back to the living room.
“How ya doing?” I asked.
She shrugged.
“If you want, I mean if it would make you feel safer I could stay here tonight,” I told her. “On the couch,” I quickly clarified, then sort of wished I hadn’t. That bed was big enough we could have slept in it in a platonic way, that is if I hadn’t just accidently talked my way out of it. “Whatever you want,” I added.
Smooth, real smooth, I told myself.
“I wouldn’t be keeping you from anything?” she asked.
“Not at all. Would it make you feel better?”
She looked down at her hands.
“Yeah, thanks. I think it would.”
“Then I’ll stay. How about another movie?” I said.
She balked. “Those things are like, five bucks a pop!”
“So? It’s still cheaper than if we went to the movies. With these, we don’t even have to go anywhere.”
She raised her eyebrows and bit her lip, thinking.
“Come on, I’ll even make popcorn,” I said. I’d seen Swan putting some away earlier, so I knew we had it.
“Okay, you’ve got me there. One more movie.”
“How about something a little more adult?”
Oh, crap. I did not mean that the way it came out.
“PG-13 perhaps?” I joked, trying to back track.
“It would be nice to watch something that isn’t animated for once.”
While I made popcorn, she scrolled through all the comedies until she found one she said she’d been dying to see. She had picked a really good one, we laughed so hard we had to cover our mouths to keep from waking Daisy. It was so great to hear her laugh like that. It was really late though, and during the last scenes she couldn’t stop yawning. She stayed awake to the end, just barely.
Before she went to bed, I made sure she had everything she needed, and told her I’d be just downstairs on the couch.
I sat in front of the TV, but I wasn’t watching it.
For a while I’d only had a few good mental images of her to live on, and most were secondhand. I had so many now, I went over them all in my head as I started to drift off. I knew I hadn’t been getting any R.E.M. sleep, because I hadn’t slept deep enough to dream since the night I had to leave Amy at the hospital.
I did fall asleep, but I didn’t quite make it to that point when I woke again, hearing Amy walking around upstairs. She checked on Daisy, then used the bathroom. She stood at the top of the stairs and whispered for Lucky. She couldn’t see him, or me from up there, but he was in an armchair on the other side of the room, fast asleep. She went and checked on Daisy again, then it sounded like she’d crawled into bed with her. She wasn’t in there for long, when she came out again. I turned around when I heard her on the stairs, coming down very, very slowly. Once she was halfway down, her face came into view. When she carefully placed her foot on the last step, she cringed when it make a creaking sound, not just with her face but her whole body. When our eyes met, the cringe stayed.
“Hi,” she whispered sheepishly.
“You can’t sleep either, huh?”
She looked relieved when she thought that I’d already been awake.
“No, not really.”
She stood there at the bottom of the stairs like she wasn’t sure what to do.
“Wanna come watch infomercials with me? You never know, we might find something that we didn’t even know existed, yet we can’t live without for the low, low price of $9.95.”
She gave me a small smile, and came to join me.
“What’s keeping you awake?” I said, sure it was probably about a million things. “If you don’t mind me asking. You don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to.”
She shrugged, and at first I thought she wasn’t going to go for it. She let out a shaky sigh.
“It’s just...it’s been a really long time since I slept by myself,” she admitted, her voice breaking.
She’d been so strong all day. The dam had to break sooner or later. She hid her face with her hands as she started to cry. I put an arm around her, and she surprised me by wrapping both of hers around my neck. I held her and stroked her back, trying to soothe her.
“You’re okay. Just let it all out.”
She buried her face in my shoulder and wailed. I’d never heard anyone cry like that in my life, she sounded like she was in so much pain.
“Today must have been so hard for you, but you’ve been really brave.”
“No I haven’t,” she argued. “I’m really scared!”
“That’s what being brave is, being scared and doing it anyway. When she’s old enough to understand it, Daisy will be very proud of you.”
She cried even harder.
At the risk of getting too deep, too fast I added, “I’m proud of you too.” I really needed her to know that.
“But I dunno what’s gonna happen to us!” she sobbed.
If I told her the whole truth, she wouldn’t have believed me.
“You guys are gonna live right here for as long as you want, and you’ll be just fine.”
It was a struggle not to cry right along with her. She was nearly in my lap by this point, she’d obviously been starved for affection and that broke my heart.
I let her cry as long as she needed to, until she was out like a light. When I was positive she was asleep, I parted my lips and kissed her forehead, probably lingering longer than I should have.
“I love you,” I murmured into her hair, “and as soon as I think you’re ready to hear it, I’ll tell you when you’re awake. I love you, and I’m so glad you finally came home to me.”
A/N: Yay! Now it’s official :) To Anthony anyway!
For the longest time I’ve said I could never publish this, because it’s too tied in with the original story. Maybe I was wrong though, you guys who have told me I should have given me so much confidence in the possibility of actually being published. Being paid, even a little, to write really would be a dream come true for me. So thanks to those who have encouraged me to do so, I think I’m going to give it a try. I’m still in the very early stages of planning this, so I haven’t decided quite how to go about this. I have a lot of material so maybe I’ll choose the highlights and rework them just a little, maybe I’ll bring my characters to a whole new world, maybe it will be a sequel to AGU. I will have to keep in mind though, I want people who haven’t read Twilight or AGU to be interested in it too ;)
Til next time, be safe ;)
