James walked over to the table where the boy had been laid, seeing he had been wrapped up in blankets. The doctor was over beside the furnace building the fire up to chase the frost and cold air from the room. The entire infirmary was deathly silent, the boy was in a deep sleep, and the doctor having been threatened earlier by the Captain who allowed his jealousy to govern his thoughts and actions, and James who was trying to temper frustration with compassion for his wife, as he was doing whatever necessary that might aid him in mending he and Caitlin’s fragile relationship. It felt as if what small amount of progress they had made was crumbling to dust in his hands.
James never, in all of his existence favored children. Nor did he have a lingering desire for offspring of his own. It was in his opinion, that once women became mothers, he could see them change drastically. Not only physically, as their hips grew wide and their breasts seemed to attempt reaching for the ground, making them no more then cows standing about waiting to be slaughtered, but also in the way they acted and the fire and independent will they possessed. If he were to be completely honest, he was overjoyed at the revelation of Caitlin’s inability to reproduce. There was no worry about her beautiful body going through that dreadful transformation, becoming misshapen with the arrival of a child.
He decided that perhaps visitations, as the way his part of the deal he had made with Red had been set, would do her some sort of good. Caitlin seemed fond of the boy, and his presence might pull her mind from dwelling on everything about her, and her nightmarish past. “When shall he be on his feet again?” The Captain inquired looking over the freckle-faced child laid about before him. The surgeon remained silent a moment before standing and walking to the table. All of these little things he was forced to be apart of where gnawing away at his conscience.
“Capt’n, I have to speak against this. If ye spoke of ye plan to this boy, he could tell ye misses.” Hook looked up at Liam for a moment, in a way that made the nervous doctors stomach clinch, as if a silent wish he could retract his words.
“You know, I find it extremely odd that you have taken such a distinctive interest in Caitlin. I am told the rest of my crew are growing a resentment towards her even though I warned every man aboard against it. Their feeble minds feel that a blame must be placed somewhere for the misfortune that has befallen them. On the weather, on God’s will, on the creatures and deity’s of the sea, curses and evil eyes, even on a woman who has not wanted anything from them and only wishes to understand. They look everywhere for things to be someone’s fault, except themselves.” His eyes narrowed as he stood looking at Liam, “My patients has been tried, and tried again and wears thin with your constant concern and unprofessional interest in MY wife.”
“Her health is all that concerns me Capt’n, I swear it.” Doc motioned towards the boy keeping his eyes on Hook, “Ye’ve seen with ye own eyes how well this boy keeps secrets.” James gave a sigh of annoyance. Lately it seemed the pirates aboard the ship where growing bold, and thought nothing of arguing or asking idiotic questions.
“If you were as observant as claimed to be, then you would have noticed a rather interesting aspect of the child.” He leaned closer, looking the doctor squarely in the eyes, “The boy has not said, nor do I think ever will, utter one syllable. Perhaps he can not, or perhaps he simply can find nothing to say. Either way, he will be watched closely. As are others who share a similar desire to be in my brides presence.” He said in a tone that clearly stated the doctor was to under a watchful eye. “Tend to the boy, then report to my cabin.” The Captain reached up with his metal appendage tearing the cloth of the doctors shirt open revealing the first wound he had sustained for what appeared to be advances towards The Hook’s wife. “Watch your footsteps and mind your attitude doctor, or I will bestow on you a scar to be the brother of this one.” He released the doctor, and left the infirmary, slamming the door behind him yet again. Liam felt as if the air became thinner, once James left the room, and he was able to breathe once more.
The overwhelming jealousy that Hook had been suffering from, was spawning a dangerous paranoia that more then one person aboard the ship had noticed. Liam looked down at the boy and found another blanket to lay over him. The warmth would help him regain his normal health and make it easier for him to rest, which is what his body desperately needed for now. The doctor paused for a moment, sighing deeply. This visit was neither a pleasure nor an honor, and he dreaded it.
James went back to his Cabin to wait for his surgeon’s arrival that he had ordered. He began to walk back to Caitlin who had not moved from her seat at the window just when he felt a fluttering against his chest. BLAST! He had forgotten all about the small creature he carried with him. Caitlin could have stumbled across her at any moment, as he had been holding his sorrow laden wife as close as he could to his chest. Quickly he moved to the glass lantern stuffing the small one in her cage and locking the door tight. It was a close call, but it was certain that she did not see him nor the creature. Had she done so, there was no doubt a scream or a fit would have happened before he had a chance to know what had caused it.
“Change into your night clothes my dear, it will make things much easier and that much quicker so that we may both retire.” He said giving her a kind smile, holding out his good hand and sweeping it behind her back leading her towards her closet. She was nervous about something, he had come to know the signs well as it was all he saw from her within the first few weeks of their marriage.
“James, must we? It’s all true, I feel that it is. How could it not be.” Hook paused turning her towards him and looking deep into her eyes. He had to talk her into agreeing to this, how else could his plan be put into affect if she wouldn’t submit to the examination?
“My dear, would it not be better to know for a fact, rather then go on suffering and wondering what may or may not be?” He kissed her softly before whispering, “The one virtue, that is not even a virtue at all, is the one known as Hope. For it prolongs ones agony and suffering. Wither it be good or bad, we must put it to rest now.” Caitlin took a deep breath and nodded knowing he was right. However she was still very unsure of this, as she was still severely shy when it came to James when they were alone together. Another man, even though he was a doctor, was terrifying to her. James reached behind her again, guiding her towards her closet once more. “Go on, change your attire, and do not be afraid. I shall stay by your side.”
He watched the way she moved as she walked away from him. It reminded him of a Cat that felt unbalanced walking over water on a shaky timber. Holding on for dear life as if afraid she would lose her balance and fall into that water at any given moment. In Caitlin’s case, it had been one confusing and horrible occurrence after another. It was as if she was afraid something else might hit her at any moment. The captain suddenly felt that he had to arrange another trip off of the ship. The change of scenery and the fresh open air would do her more good then keeping her locked up here.
James was trying his best to see past his own desires and objections, wanting to do what was right for Caitlin. The last few times they had gone ashore, she was struck with disasters, and a sort of madness ensnared her senses. It was a draw about her safty being anymore or less while away from the ship. The last time she left, she was stolen away by a band of wild boys. It seemed as if the safest place for Caitlin was right in Hook’s sight by his side at all times. How ever impossible that was going to be. They would go ashore once the deadly winter they were concealed in had fled. The entire crew would accompany them. He decided it was time he showed her a few things as he explained each one to her. She was going to need to be introduced to the strange land that was now her home.
Aurora would be a great help in starting Cat’s reeducation. There were many things that had to be done, but his first and foremost concern for the time being was Caitlin. If he did not stop now and take the time to help her on her way, he would lose her forever. All the plans and dreams that he held for there future would be shattered, and his own hopes for happiness would have nothing else to do but grow dim and die. Peter Pan could wait a while, they had all of eternity to find him and kill him. Cat could not wait any longer, she was struggling far to hard to retain her grip on the reality that she had accepted long ago. Each event and new thing that arose only made her try to hold on tighter.
Just then, a knock came to the double doors, “ENTER!” James called out. The doctor came in quickly closing the door behind him, looking at Hook. The Captain’s voice seemed to freeze over completely in comparison to the warm tone he took with Caitlin. “She will rejoin us momentarily.” The doctor took a brave breath, trying to get his courage up wanting to try one last time. He moved closer to the Captain whispering low.
“Capt’n, are ye sure ye wouldn’t want to find another way . . .” Hook’s eyes flashed as he looked towards the doctor, “Hold your TOUNGE you moron!” He hissed low to keep the words from reaching Caitlin’s ears. “She is neither deaf or dim witted, she is merely stunned for the moment and understandably so. Perform your task and perform it will. I do not wish to hear another doubtful or unconfident word from you or I will be forced to cut out that wagging tongue of yours and tack it to the side rail as a decoration!” Taking the warning the doctor grew silent.
Something was going to have to be done. Hook’s entire crew was becoming far to bold for their own good. A demonstration and example was going to have to be made so they would not forget themselves so easily.
Caitlin appeared a few short moments later, ready to retire. She wore the nightgown he had given her that complimented her shapely form, her hair brushed over her shoulders and completely unbound. When her eyes landed on the doctor, she grew nervous and started to panic as she looked at James, “Please, must we? If I promise to never mention it again, may I please just go to bed?” Hook sighed and walked to her, taking her hand in his.
“Indulge me in this one simple request my beloved. The not knowing for certain will cause us both to lie awake in the bitter watches of the night, wondering what might be.” Caitlin felt defeated, her own suffering she had become used to, but making James suffer with her was not something she could allow him to do. Asking again, or defying him would lead to another episode of what had happened a few days ago, and she would rather not try him. Her eyes turned down cast letting them both know she would argue no longer and submit to her husbands will.
“Good. Now go with the doctor and follow his instructions.” Hooks eyes looked up at Liam’s, “I will be watching, nothing bad shall befall you.” Taking a deep breath, she closed her eyes summoning that courage that kept her on her own two feet through the years she spent growing up on her own. Hook held out her hand to the doctor, giving her over to the surgeons hand. Liam swallowed, feeling incredibly nervous himself feeling as if his very life loomed in the balance. Reaching out, the doctor took her wrist rather then her hand, not wanting to cause the Captain anymore silent questions about his interests and led her to the Captain’s bed, closing the curtain behind.
If she cried out, or if he heard the slightest sound that did not fit the place, the Doctor would feel a Iron hook severing his spinal cord in a matter of seconds. He stayed close by, ready to attack if need be. James moved to his desk and eased into his chair, finding himself extremely tired. Running his hand over his face, his eyes repeatedly turned to the curtain. Not a sound came, and the air seemed deathly still. He knew it was impossible but it seemed as if the room grew darker, a weight appearing and pressing down on him. It was a familiar feeling, one that he had not experienced for quite sometime. Long before Caitlin came back to Neverland with him. Always he had tried to avoid dealing with it and found something else to do. Hook closed his eyes sinking further into the chair. There was nothing else to do this time, he could not leave the cabin until the surgeon had finished his task and was on his way. After giving his word to Caitlin about staying, he had no intention of breaking his promise.
Thoughts sometimes have the power to recall things from long past that would be better left forgotten. Peter Pan was the reason they had been brought to this place. Because this land had become part of the boy everything trapped inside of it became a constant struggle. The world was divided between good and evil, right and wrong. Hook automatically became part of the evils, and before long became the most evil creature in Neverland. The evils never seemed to hold the winning hand no matter how cleaver a plan, or extensive the attack. Since Neverland favored Pan above all else and hailed the young rouge as a hero he was the leader of all things good. This entire summery of this strange place, was as seen through a child’s eyes. What was good and what was bad, and children saw them. The conflict between these two advisory’s had not always been so cut and dry.
The first time James had ever even became aware of Pan’s existence, was when Smee came to him one day and reported strange happenings aboard the Jolly Rodger. At first Crewmembers found their belongings being moved from place to place, of course blaming each other at first, but soon their blame turned from each other thinking a higher power had become involved. Then came a the report that the cook had become suspicious of extremely large rats feasting upon the ships provisions, and turning the galley upside down in the middle of the night. But when a full sweep was done on the ship, not one nest was found. These unexplained happenings were causing the pirates imaginations to run wild. Captain Hook (although known by another name at this time, unfortunately it was in the memories he had lost long ago), continually discounted each report knowing how the crew had a tendency to exaggerate, and take their superstitions far to seriously. Their boredom in between their ventures only magnified this even more.
However, one day it was Hook’s turn to experience the strange goings on aboard the ship when his own cabin was targeted. He entered his cabin to find his desk turned upside down, and his extremely large collection of hats and attire thrown all over the cabin. It was a strange sight to be hold, as everything in his room was in complete disarray. “By the heavens.” He breathed as his eyes moved about the cabin in disbelief. “Surely the ship has been invaded by an angry spirit from the great beyond!” Shaking his head he turned and exited his cabin, walking to the railing calling out to his first mate, Mr. Smee. “SMEE! Have my quarters put in order immediately!” He shouted down below. He had no intentions of sullying his hands with a maids work.
“Aye Captain!” He responded immediately. James turned and went back into his cabin, but froze in the doorway. His eyes went wide at the sight they beheld. Everything was back in it’s proper place and in perfect order as if it had never been moved to begin with. He began to wonder if it had even been as he saw it just a few moments before. Perhaps the boredom was getting to him as well, or the sea air had turned foul and was causing illusions over the minds of his crew.
Three pirates accompanied Smee as they appeared in the door ready to clean up as the Captain had ordered. A look of utter bewilderment and confusion swept their faces as the room looked fine as if it had been cleaned recently. All of their eyes turned towards their Captain. James looked back at them deciding he didn’t want to be made a fool of, “Well? What are you staring at? Get to work and clean up this mess!” He shouted at them, all four men quickly went to work at whatever they could find to do besides the daily routine that involved putting the Captain’s cabin in order.
Hook walked to his window looking out towards the sea, “Something is amiss here, I shall find out the cause.” The thought that the crew had grown mischievous and bold in the lack of adventure and decided to entertain themselves with pranks and tricks about their fellow pirates and the Captain was foremost in his mind. In fact this was the most likely of explanations. He turned walking from the window; never even imagining the very cause of the strange happenings was hiding just above the window he had been standing at. The boy covered his mouth trying to muffle his howls of laughter, enjoying himself completely.
At this time in history, James still possessed that had been lost once the pirate crew had been brought into Neverland. His missing hand, and his sanity. Mind you, one who plundered, pillaged, murdered and raped for a living who also enjoyed seeing the glow of absolute terror and fear in his lovers eyes, can not be though of as all together sane to begin with. Hook had always been known as a ruthless leader, and pirate Captain of his ship. However he never punished his crew without having some sort of cause. It could be said that the one thing he still had that made him a gentlemen and not just a mindless barbarian was his ability to maintain control of his actions and was still capable of rational thought.
Even though he beheld the strange occurrence with his own eyes, he was still very skeptical and was quite certain there was some sort of explanation. They were at sea with no land in sight, so it had to be someone already aboard the ship.
His reminiscing in his memories that haunted his cabin was interrupted when the doctor stepped out of the curtain and pulled them closed tight behind him as if trying to conceal the sound of their voices. James stood and walked towards him. He already knew what the truthful outcome of this little venture was going to be. What he was wanting to know was whether or not she believed it. “Well?” He asked impatiently when Liam did not speak right away.
“I didn’t tell her anythin’ Capt’n. I couldn’t.” Hook’s eyes darkened as he just stood there in silence and disbelief for a few moments. Even with all of the trouble this man had already gotten himself into, the warnings he had been given over and over again, and he had been informed earlier that this was his absolute last chance to make good, and he DARED to defy him!?! Liam grew nervous seeing the look on Hook’s face and began to speak quickly, “We must talk Capt’n, I did find somethin’ and I’m sure ye’ll wanna hear it.” James eyes narrowed at this.
“Tell me then, and tell me quickly.” He said in warning. He was tired and he had had quite enough for one week. Liam regained his composure taking a breath so he could tell his story.
“While I was exsaminating ye’re misses . . .” Liam’s words were cut short when the ship suddenly listed violently to port, causing both James and the doctor to lose their balance tossing them to one side of the cabin. It seemed as soon as they started to regain their footing the Ship instantly listed to the starboard side sending them back across to the other side of the cabin.
“WHAT THE DEVIL!” He shouted pushing the doctor out of the way as he made his way to the double doors of his cabin and threw them open quickly making his way to the railing. The ice was melting, the sun was out, and he could see the green of the island coming into view with the rays of light that had been absent. Smee was standing near by, and James reached out snagging his first mates collar with his hook jerking him close, “Pass the word immediately, not a single whisper is to be spoken of our newly acquired guest. Pan has returned to Neverland and his presence is awakening all living creatures, we shall soon have ears pressed to our haul and our secrets made known should they be uttered allowed. Most likely those dirty lost boys will have counted our ‘guest’ lost to the elements, but we shall soon find out if an attack on the ship follows.”
Tossing Smee away he looked towards the pink clouds holding onto the railing. Smee quickly scrambled to his feet and headed down the stairs carrying out his orders. For the first time since he had come to this place, spring befalling Neverland telling of Pan’s return did not fire up his desire to regain pursuit of the boy. He needed more time, now Caitlin would be in danger once more and she was simply not ready for it. His eyes turned to the men standing about on deck, “I WANT WATCHES ON DECK AT ALL BELLS! If I find any of you sleeping, drinking, or slacking off during your watch, I promise you a death more horrible and painful then your feeble imaginations can conjure!” Hook shouted making eye contact with each man so they knew how serious he was.
Turning back into the cabin he saw the surgeon had not left yet, shaking his head he walked past him. “What the devil are you still doing here!? Get below and tend to that boy, I want him well enough and healthy enough so that he may be presentable for Caitlin by tomorrow evening. And hold your tongue about anything concerning that boy from here out. I shall not have those treacherous beings below reporting back to that spawn of Satan about what goes on aboard my ship.”
“But . . .Capt’n, I really must tell you about what I . . . .” James slammed his hook down on his desk quieting the surgeon immediately.
“I have had ENOUGH. My commands are NOT to be questioned; they are to be followed as soon as they are uttered! Without a word of opinion from lower ranking crewmembers! GET BELOW DECKS AND DO AS I ORDERED! NOW!” He shouted. Liam had something important to say but it looked as if it would have to wait for another time. Quickly he left the cabin to go check on the boy known as Red. He only hoped that the news he held would be given before it was to late, for Caitlin’s sake.
