Jacob went back inside to assure the Cullens there would be no trouble, at least for now, but it seemed Edward had already told them. It was getting creepy how close he was becoming to the very creatures he’d once hated.
He noticed another cup of blood on the end table beside Bella. The color drained from his face and he had to lean against the door. This was not going to be a pleasant few months. “It’s all right, Jake.” Bella gave him a soft smile. “About a month ago I would’ve fainted, so I understand.”
Jacob had a feeling she really didn’t, but he wasn’t going to make big deal over it. “Maybe I’ll just go get a shower and lie down.”
“Before you do that, could you do something for me quickly?” Esme asked.
“Sure, I guess. What do you need?”
“I have some clothes for Leah. I feel terrible about all the trouble, and Alice noticed she was about my size. I was hoping you could wash them so I don’t have to touch them.” Carlisle glared at her, and she shot a glare right back. “Honestly, Carlisle, I know you’re excited about being an uncle, but we both know a little laundry won’t hurt him.”
Jacob couldn’t help but laugh at how embarrassed Carlisle seemed at that moment. “Uncle Carlisle. It does have a ring to it, doesn’t it?”
If vampires could blush, Carlisle probably would have. “I’ll just…go...” he mumbled, and headed up the stairs.
Jacob shook his head and followed Esme to the laundry room. He knew Leah would probably turn up her nose at the clothes, but it was nice of Esme to try to help. She really was like a mother. He washed the clothes for her, thinking it was a shame Leah would probably turn down such nice things just because of who they came from.
For some reason the gravity of the situation really hit him while he was folding the clothes and putting them in a plastic bag. A few tears slid down his cheek as he thought about how Leah and Seth were homeless now because of him. What he’d said to Jared was true enough: he wasn’t making them stay. But the guilt still twisted his gut into knots.
He brushed the tears away, rather annoyed at how emotional he was being lately. He had to get hold of himself for the sake of his own sanity. On his way up to the bathroom he repeated over and over to himself that this was Sam’s fault. It was Sam’s overreaction that had led to all this.
A hot shower seemed to be just what he needed. He stood under the spray and let the hot water relax him. The water was starting to get cold by the time he got out and wrapped himself up in a towel. He headed to Liam’s room, which he supposed was now his room, too. A small section of the walk-in closet was already full of the clothes and things Liam had bought him. Jacob had kept them there partly because he was spending so much time at the Cullens’ and partly so he wouldn’t upset Billy.
With a soft sigh he decided to unpack the garbage bag. It made everything seem so official, but it needed to be done. He didn’t think Liam would mind if he rearranged a few things. Once that was done he pulled on some clean clothes and went downstairs. He was a little surprised to find Seth on the couch beside Bella, watching TV and eating pizza.
“Hey, Jake.” Seth waved. “I know you wanted me to keep an eye on things, but Liam invited me in and I was hungry. Don’t worry, Leah’s still on patrol. She said something about finding some roadkill.” He shrugged and went back to his food.
“That’s fine, kid. Just go out and make sure she takes a break when you’re done.” It felt so weird to give out orders like that. Jacob was definitely not alpha material.
He took the slice of pizza Liam brought him. It was homemade and had all his favorite toppings. Liam had even stuffed cheese in the crust and had some dipping sauce out. “You have yourself an awesome cook,” Seth commented.
“Yeah.” Jacob chuckled at the way Liam beamed every time his cooking was complimented. “He feeds me well.”
“And you and your sister are welcome to come in any time if you get hungry,” Carlisle added. “Or if you need anything else, for that matter. All you have to do is ask. It’s the least we can do after what you did.”
“Don’t mention it.” Seth shrugged. “This is why I think Sam is making a big mistake.”
Jacob ate quietly, trying not to think too much about everything. His whole life had been turned upside down, but he hoped that with a little time he could get his bearings again. Maybe Sam would even come to his senses and things could go back to normal; well, almost normal, anyway.
An uneventful week passed. Jacob was glad for the peace and quiet, but the silence on Sam’s end worried him. Was Sam planning something big? Would he really risk everyone’s lives over this? What bothered Jacob the most was his vulnerability. He couldn’t phase, so he would be a sitting duck if Sam did attack. He wasn’t used to being so useless. The only thing he could offer was the knowledge of what Sam might do, so the Cullens could take the necessary steps to protect themselves.
Seth and Leah continued to keep constant watch. Seth had no problem with coming inside for meals and to sleep. Leah preferred to stay outside in wolf form, though Jacob managed to get her to take the offered food. The tone of authority in his voice as he argued with her surprised even him.
Bella was doing better, except for the occasional broken rib when the creature inside her kicked a little too hard. Naturally, Bella brushed it off as no big deal. Even human babies could crack ribs sometimes. But this was not a human baby; it craved blood, and Bella had to consume quite a bit of it.
Jacob was holding out hope that he wouldn’t have to do the same. The smell of blood in the house still nauseated him so much that he had to eat outside. He tried not to make Bella feel bad about it, but she looked like she wanted to cry every time she watched him carry his plate out to the porch while holding his breath.
The Cullens had waited as long as they could, but eventually they needed to hunt. Jacob suggested they go during the day because Sam would expect them to do it at night. Also, they couldn’t all go at once, so Carlisle had to split them up in groups of two. Liam, Edward, Alice, and Rosalie went first, with Seth following them at a distance. If anything were to happen Carlisle could call them back through his link with Liam.
Jacob kissed Liam goodbye, making him promise to return before nightfall. Then, with one hand on his belly, he watched his mate leave.
“Jacob?” Carlisle’s voice interrupted his thoughts.
“Yeah?”
“Part of the reason I sent them first is because I wanted to try to do an ultrasound on you,” Carlisle admitted. “I’m kind of anxious to see if I can. I don’t mean to treat you like a lab experiment, but you’re progressing differently than Bella. You aren’t even showing.”
“You don’t think—” Jacob was suddenly terrified that something had happened and there was no baby anymore. He may not be human, but both unborn children had been fathered by vampires, so how could there be that much difference?
“Calm down.” Carlisle put a hand on Jacob’s shoulder. “I doubt anything is wrong. You threw up three times this morning when Liam brought you a bouquet of wildflowers.”
Jacob frowned at the thought. It had been a sweet gesture, but for some reason the strong scent of the flowers was too much. All the flowers at the wedding hadn’t bothered him like that, which gave him little comfort. It was just too bad Liam had tried to do something nice and ended up with vomit on his pants for his effort.
“Okay. I’m kind of anxious to see if you can do an ultrasound on me, too.” Carlisle led him to the basement, where he had all sorts of medical equipment. “Wow, where did all this come from?”
“I figured if Bella was going to join the family I’d need to be prepared,” Carlisle joked, referring to her tendency to clumsiness. “It’s a very good thing people don’t generally ask me too many questions.”
Jacob nodded and hopped up on a little table Carlisle indicated, that barely seemed big enough. He watched curiously while Carlisle fired up the machine. “I’m going to need you to lift up your shirt and pull down your pants a little,” Carlisle instructed.
Jacob did as asked, and shivered as Carlisle squeezed a giant glob of cold gel onto his belly. “Sorry,” Carlisle apologized. “I know the cold probably isn’t pleasant.”
“I’ll live.” Jacob shrugged and watched as Carlisle took a little thing that looked like a wand and pressed the wide end against his skin and spread the gel around. Images appeared on the screen, but Jacob couldn’t really make out anything. He wondered how anyone could tell what all the light and dark blurs were.
Carlisle seemed pleased, though. “I can see where the womb formed.”
“But can you see the baby?”
The doctor’s deep brown eyes scanned the screen closely. “Yes, it’s right there.” He pointed to a tiny white blurb.
Jacob leaned toward the screen, squinting to see a little better what Carlisle was pointing at. “Are you sure?” It looked like a crumb from a piece of toast.
“I’m sure,” Carlisle chuckled. “See, this is the head.” He pointed to the end that was bigger and more rounded.
“Is that a tail?” Jacob asked, noticing that the other end came to a point. “Please tell me it isn’t going to be born with a tail.”
“I wouldn’t think so.” Carlisle was trying hard not to laugh. “The tail is normal. It will eventually fold in and become the coccyx, or tailbone as it’s more commonly known.”
“Oh.” Jacob felt relieved suddenly. “So what does all of this mean?”
“Well, we think you’re about two weeks along, seeing as how you could phase until a few days after the weekend you spent here. And judging by the size and shape of the fetus, it’s about four weeks along. That tells me the fetus is growing at about twice the normal growth rate.”
“So I’ve got about four and a half months instead of nine?”
“Something like that.” Carlisle nodded. “I’ll continue to monitor you, of course.”
“And Bella?” Jacob asked. “When do you expect her...hers...to want to come out?”
Carlisle went quiet as he cleaned the gel off Jacob’s skin with a towel. “Probably soon. Her fetus is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. Now that we’ve figured out what it wants, it’s growing like mad again. Since I can’t get a look at it, all I have to go on is her size, and she’s nearly there.”
Jacob nodded and watched as the machine printed out a picture of his tiny baby. He was afraid for his friend. The thing was breaking Bella’s ribs on a daily basis. Would she survive going into labor? He didn’t worry as much about himself; he could take it. Carlisle had tested his healing speed with a few shallow cuts on his arm. They’d healed a little more slowly than they would have a month ago, but it was still a lot faster than with the average human.
Bella was still a fragile human being. Did she even plan on surviving? “I’ll do my best to deliver the baby as safely as possible,” Carlisle said, as if he could read Jacob’s thoughts.
Somehow Jacob didn’t feel much better. “I think I’ll go check in with Leah, then go lie down.” He headed back upstairs while Carlisle put everything away. He knew Carlisle would do his best, but that wasn’t going to stop Jacob from worrying.
