“Good morning, my love.” I stroked Ana’s pink cheek as I laid next to her. I watched as her lashes fluttered open to reveal those deep blue eyes I loved.
“Good morning, baby,” Ana whispered. “Do you remember this day one year ago?” I asked. Ana thought for a second, getting her bearings on what day it was. “Yes!” she squealed. “My baby is two!” I beamed at her. “Yes. It feels like only yesterday that we were getting ready for his first birthday party.” “We had just started trying for Blip 2.” Ana smiled. “And now she’s coming in less than three months.” I leaned down to kiss my daughter good morning. “Hi, Phoebe Rose. I love you.” “Phoebe Rose,” Ana repeated, sighing happily. We had chosen her name just yesterday as we laid in our meadow. “You know, she can recognize our voices now.” “Really? Phoebe, it’s Daddy,” I cooed, but my daughter gave no response. “Maybe she’s still sleeping.” I wasn’t giving up that easily. I lifted Ana’s nightgown, pressing my lips skin-to-skin. “Wake up, baby girl. Daddy’s here. I love you, Phoebe Rose.” I felt the baby move, pressing a foot against her mother. “There she is!” Ana beamed down at me, stroking my hair and her bump. “Well, our girl is up. Should we go wake the birthday boy?” Ana nodded eagerly, and we headed to the nursery. Teddy was standing in his crib with a big smile on his face. Just as we had done last year, we sang our own little rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ to our boy. Then I lifted him up out of his crib and gave him a big kiss. “How old are you, Teddy?” “Two!” he squealed in delight, and I helped him show two fingers to Ana. “I can’t believe my little boy is two years old.” Ana kissed his chubby cheek. “Alright, I think that it’s time to get you a big boy bed. What do you think, son?” “Big boy!” “Yes, baby,” Ana giggled. “Your sister’s going to sleep in your crib.” “Teddy, remember? Where’s Sister? Where’s baby Phoebe?” “Mommy tummy!” Teddy reached out a hand for Ana’s bump. “What a smart boy!” Ana praised him, running a hand through his copper locks. He really was so smart. It still amazed me that I had anything to do with making such an amazing kid. There were so many days that I had worried about him. Worried that he might be fifty shades of fucked up like me. I thought maybe it was in my DNA… but Teddy was perfect. He was loved; he was capable of love; he was smart and sweet and innocent and unharmed. I loved him with everything that I had. I loved my daughter already, too, but I worried about her in a different way. I never worried for one moment that she would be any shade of fucked up, but I scared myself shitless some nights worrying that she’d run into her own ‘Fifty Shades’ one day. I talked to Ana about it one night. “Christian?” Ana waddled into my office, where I sat with the lights dimmed and a hand running anxiously through my hair. “Ana.” “What’s wrong, baby?” “Just thinking.” Ana climbed into my lap, belly and all. I loved that she still did that, like somehow I could keep her safe when she was in my arms. I began rubbing circles around her bump, more for my anxious hands than for her or the baby. “I’m going to have a daughter.” I drew another circle around with my finger. “You are.” “I have to protect her.” “You will.” “Ana, I used to think Teddy was going to be fifty shades like me. Like it was in my blood, and I would pass on my fucked-up-ness.” “But he’s not.” “He’s not. He’s sweet and smart and pure and innocent and full of love.” Ana sighed, nodding in agreement. “So, are you worried our daughter will be fifty shades?” She tried to follow my thoughts. “No. I think she will be sweet and smart and pure and innocent and beautiful.” I kept rubbing her belly. “So, what’s wrong, baby?” “I worry she’ll meet someone who’s fifty shades. And then I worry I’ll have to kill him.” Ana giggled, running a thumb along my cheek. “You know,” she began. “I was once sweet and smart and innocent. And then I met someone who was fifty shades.” I groaned. “If my daughter met someone like me, I would destroy him.” “Christian! I know you don’t mean that. You know, I met you, and it was the best thing that ever happened in my life. You gave me a beautiful life, a wonderful marriage, two children. How can you say that?” “I hurt you, Ana. Physically, emotionally. I would strangle anyone who laid a finger on her.” “But then you loved me. You loved me so deeply, and our daughter would be lucky to find someone who loves her half as much as you love me, no? And I would be proud of her if she helped someone learn to love the way I helped you. You didn’t throw anything at me that I couldn’t handle. Our daughter comes from two very strong parents. She will be able to handle what comes her way. We’ll make sure of it. But baby? We have 18+ years before that happens, okay? Let’s relax and enjoy her. I don’t want you to worry about her so much.” “I worry about all of you. It’s my job.” Ana sighed. “You take wonderful care of your family. At the end of the day, we can’t protect them from every bad thing in this world. We can only hope that we teach them enough that they’ll be able to protect themselves and make good decisions.” She was right. She’s always right. “God, I love you. You are the most amazing mother a child could ask for.” “Christian, you underestimate what a good father you are. Just love them, baby. Love them the way you love me.” “Well, not exactly the way I love you.” I smirked and nibbled on her neck. “Oh, Christian!” Ana giggled, returning the kiss at my lips. “Big boy!” My son jostled me from my thoughts. “Yes, we’re going to get you a big boy bed. Mommy, do you want to get him dressed?” “Of course.” Ana happily took Ted in her arms and over to the changing table. I got showered and ready for the day, meeting my family downstairs for breakfast. We headed out to shop for a toddler bed for our boy before his birthday party that night. When we arrived at the store, Teddy was in bed-dreamland, climbing from bed to bed. “Big boy! Big boy!” “Yes, Ted, which bed do you want?” Teddy looked at me with big gray eyes. “That’s a big decision for a little boy.” Ana stepped in. We each took a pudgy hand and walked our son around the room. Finally, Ana asked him to choose between two beds. He toddled over to a navy blue one, and I helped lift him onto it. We laid together on the tiny bed. “Is this the one, Teddy? Is this your big boy bed?” “Big boy bed!” “No more crib?” “No crib.” “We’ll take it.” I paid for the bed and set up the delivery. My boy was officially no longer a baby, and it would have made me much sadder had I not had my little girl to look forward to. When we got home, Ana put Teddy down for one of his last naps in his crib. We admired our boy, stretched out from one end to the other. “He’s really not a baby anymore.” I kissed Ana’s forehead. “Nope. He’s a toddler. The cutest toddler I know.” “You don’t know many toddlers.” “Fair point well made, Mrs. Grey, but I know he’s the cutest.” Ana leaned into my shoulder, rubbing her bump. “Is Phoebe behaving?” “Not so much. I think she’s got a leg in my lungs.” I laughed as I splayed my hand across her stomach. “I get the feeling she’s going to be feisty.” “Well, I wonder where the hell she’ll have gotten that from?” Ana rolled her eyes. “Careful there, Wench. You won’t always be pregnant, and I don’t forget eye-rolling.” “I’m shaking in my boots, Mr. Grey.” “Come on, let’s get out of here before you wake my son.” “Your son, huh? Well, my daughter and I will be downstairs watching TV.” “So that’s how it’s going to go from now on, boys vs. girls?” I teased her as we left Teddy’s room. “Better get used to it, Grey. Phoebe and I are going to rule the roost.” “That doesn’t sound so bad.” We cuddled up on the couch for a few quiet minutes. “So, two years ago, one of the most amazing days of our lives took place,” Ana began. “If you mean one of the scariest nights of my life, then yes.” “Scary led up to amazing.” “It did, but Phoebe’s birth is going to be nothing like that. Scheduled C-section all the way.” “I don’t know, Christian, I might like to try to have that VBAC thing that Dr. Greene mentioned. I want to have the experience of pushing my daughter out, you know?” I tugged my fingers through my hair. “For the love of god, Ana, please. Can’t we just enjoy our daughter’s birth? Why create an emergency situation again when there isn’t one? Let’s just pick her birthday with Dr. Greene, situate Teddy with family, and make it a great day. No middle-of-the-night rushed drives to the hospital. No emergency C-Section. No 15+ hours of labor. No more gray hairs for Christian Grey.” Ana smiled and cuddled into my chest. “Okay.” Was I hearing right? My wife never gave in without a fight. “Okay?” “Okay. Fair points well made, Mr. Grey. I would like to enjoy our daughter’s birthday so that we don’t have to sit on two days of the year recounting traumatic events of births past.” “Just the one?” “Just the one. Blip 2 gets a planned C-Section.” Whew. I kissed my girl. “Thank you.” After a bit, Ana went off to gather balloons, cake, and decorations for Teddy’s party. “Have Taylor go with you.” “I don’t need company to Party City, Christian.” “Ana, you don’t need to be lugging heavy packages. Please, let him go with you.” “Fine,” Ana grumbled, waddling out the door. Wow, I just won two fights in a row. It was my lucky day. I went up to get Teddy ready for his party. “Hello, sleepyhead.” Ted looked up at me with soft gray eyes that weren’t quite ready to awake from his short nap. I gave him a few minutes to rest in my arms as I rocked him. “Well, little one, I think we’re going to be spending a lot more time just the two of us. We’re gonna have to be buddies. Mommy’s going to be spending a lot of time with baby Phoebe.” Ted watched me as I spoke, thumb in his mouth. “You’re going to be the best big brother. Just like I always took care of Aunt Mia.” I kissed his hair before getting up to get him dressed. We played in his room for a bit before I heard Ana coming in. I went down the steps as fast as I could with Teddy in my arms, but was happy to see that Taylor was making sure my wife didn’t lift a finger. “Thanks, Taylor.” I nodded to him as he finished with the packages. Ana sighed and took Teddy from my arms. “Hi, birthday boy!” “Ana, he’s getting heavy for you, too.” “Christian, I said it was okay to have Taylor help me with packages, but if you think I’m not going to hold my son anymore…” “Of course, Ana, I’m sorry. I just don’t want you to strain yourself these last few months.” Ana held Teddy close, letting him rest his legs on either side of her bump. He happily put his head on her shoulder. She went into the living room, letting Teddy play on the floor while she decorated the house. A few hours later, our guests began to arrive. Ana’s stepdad came, followed by my own parents and Mia. Finally, Kate and Elliot arrived with Ava. “Hi!” Ana opened the door gently so as not to disturb the baby. “Hi!” Kate replied happily, gift in hand. “Where’s my nephew?” “He’s inside with everyone else. Come in, come in. I need to get my hands on my little niece!” Ana, Kate, and Ava made their way to the den, and I followed behind with my brother. “Well, how’s fatherhood treating you, Elliot?” “It’s great. Exhausting, but great. When I’m with Ava, it’s the best. But, you know, then Ava goes to sleep, and Kate’s just always so tired…” “Do you mean you haven’t…?” “Yeah, man. How long did you guys wait after the six week mark?” I thought back to the morning Teddy turned six weeks old. That was a fucking good morning. “We didn’t wait, sorry. I guess Ana was up for it. She was pretty sore, though. Maybe it’s good to wait.” “I can’t wait much longer, man.” I patted Elliot on the back as we landed in the living room. He strode over to Teddy, lifting him up into a bear hug. “Happy birthday, Ted!” Teddy squealed with delight. Over in the corner, Kate was lifting Ava out of her car seat and transferring her into Ana’s eager arms. “Hi, Ava,” Ana cooed. “Hi, pretty girl.” She let the baby grip her finger. “Oh, Kate, she’s so cute!” Just then, Teddy scuttled over to his mother. “Mama, no!” “Teddy, say hi to baby Ava.” Ana smiled down at him. “No baby!” Teddy furrowed his brow, scolding his mother. “Ted, come here big boy.” I took my son onto my own lap. “That’s cousin Ava. Ava’s a nice baby. Remember, you were a baby, but now you’re a big boy?” “No baby!” Teddy buried his face in my shoulder, and I rubbed his back. “I think someone’s getting a little tired.” I smiled and took Ted into the kitchen to get him a sippy cup. Ana must have given Ava back to Kate because she soon met me, glossy-eyed, in the kitchen. “What’s wrong, baby?” I asked, putting Ted in his high chair. “Teddy doesn’t want us to have a new baby! What are we going to do? Is he going to think I don’t love him when I start spending my time with Phoebe? Is he going to be jealous of her? How am I going to balance having two kids?!” Ana was losing her cool. I enveloped her in my arms, rocking her gently, stroking her back. “Ana, baby, no. He’s going to love his sister. You are going to be able to balance having two of them. Lots of people do it. He’s going to be a good big brother. It’ll be different when it’s our baby, not someone else’s.” Ana quieted down, looking up at me with those baby blues that made me melt. “You’re right.” “You gonna be okay?” “Yes, I want to enjoy Teddy’s party. You ready, big boy? Should we do cake and presents?” Teddy squealed, back to his usual happy self, and I lifted him out of his high chair. The whole family sang to him and helped him open his gifts. We told them all about his new ‘big boy bed’ and revealed our daughter’s name. By the end of the night both Ana and Teddy were exhausted. We decided to let him cuddle in our bed for his birthday, right in the middle of us. I rubbed Ana’s aching back until she fell asleep, and finally I managed to fall asleep, too. I tried my damndest not to suffocate my son with my usual sleeping habits, and instead woke up to him cuddled around me. I kissed my two-year-old son good morning as we watched his beautiful mom sleep a little while longer. Some details taken from the Epilogue of Fifty Shades Freed by EL James
