Chapter 33 – New Hope
The very next day, Christine spoke to Madame Giry who agreed to help her in her search for a priest, one who would be willing to let her marry Erik without any proof of who he was or where he came from. Meg walked in on them as they were talking, and Christine decided to fill her in. After all, if she and Erik were to be a couple, many things had to change. Why not start with telling her best friend the truth? Meg’s eyes grew to the size of saucers as she listened to Christine’s story, but she never interrupted. By the time she had heard everything, she was in tears.
“I’m so sorry that this happened to you,” Meg said sadly, wiping her eyes. “I wish there could have been some way for me to help you.”
“There is something that you could do for me now,” Christine said as she hugged her friend.
“Really? What is it?”
“Would you be a witness at my wedding ceremony? That is, if we are able to have a wedding.”
“Of course, I would love to,” she answered, now looking happier at the idea.
“Elaine also needs a godmother. I would like to have her baptized.”
“Oh, Christine, do you want me to do it?”
“Yes, I can’t think of anyone I’d rather have for her godmother.”
“I’d be honored!”
The two embraced again, when a knock sounded at the bedroom door. It was Lynette. Madame Giry let her in.
“Have I interrupted something?” she asked, seeing how Christine and Meg were talking and had tears in their eyes.
“No, not at all, Lynette. Please, come and sit with us. I have something to tell you, too,” Christine said, motioning for her to join them. “You’ve been working for me for a while now, and I think it’s fair that you also hear the truth.”
“The truth about what, Madame?”
So, for the second time, Christine explained all that had happened with her and Erik and how Raoul had cruelly tricked them both in order to separate them. Christine had been concerned that Lynette might be taken aback by what she heard, but she need not have worried. Lynette understood.
“So, are we going to get to meet this Erik?” she asked wide-eyed.
“Oh yes, and soon.”

Later that day, Anne and Christine found a priest who would be willing to perform the wedding ceremony. Kindly old Father Michael told them that no one, no matter what their social status might be, should be denied the right to love. He only asked that they return with Erik so that he might meet him first. When Christine told Erik the news, he was aglow with happiness.
“Really, darling? He said he will do it?”
“Yes, Erik! He was really very calm about the whole thing.”
“And you told him about my appearance? He won’t be alarmed when I go to meet him?”
“Yes, he knows. I told him that you wear a mask because of an affliction that you were born with, and he didn’t seem bothered by it at all,” she reassured him.
“Very well then. We should go together as soon as possible.”
“Tomorrow is good. I made sure to ask him.”
Erik smiled at her and wrapped her in his arms. “Tomorrow it is then.”
“Erik, could we stop by to visit someone else as well?”
“Of course, Christine. Who did you have in mind?”
“A gypsy.”
He raised his eyebrows.
“Her name is Magdalena. I saw her before I returned to you. Actually, she’s the person who encouraged me to come back. I owe her my thanks.”
“Then I would like to thank her, too. Tell me, is she part of the tribe that just came into town a couple of weeks ago?”
Christine nodded. “I had gone to the fair, and was attracted to the fortuneteller’s tent. She really knew what she was talking about – you, our daughter…she even knew Elaine’s name without being told, and she also knew that the baby was going to get sick. It was amazing, unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before, Erik.”
“She must be very gifted.”
“Yes, she is, and so kind. I liked her even though we had only just met. You know, she did tell me that I was welcome to go back and see her. She said that she wanted to know how things worked out for me, for us both.”
“Then we should definitely go while the gypsies are still here in town. Tomorrow, right after we see Father Michael.”
They embraced, and then Christine drew back with a worried expression.
“Erik?”
“Yes?”
“I just realized that I haven’t even thought about a wedding dress. I want us to be married as soon as possible, and I don’t have my dress yet.”
Erik’s lips turned up in an adorable, mischievous smile. “Yes, you do.”
Christine’s eyebrows shot up in surprise.
“Come here,” he said sweetly, taking her hand. “There’s something I want to show you.”
She followed him to a little grotto that was covered by a curtain, and realized that she had never seen behind it. When Erik pulled back the curtain, she gasped.
“Oh, Erik! It’s lovely,” she said, reaching to touch the white material of the wedding dress which hung on a mannequin that looked exactly like her.
“But you never told me. How long ago did you get it?”
Erik looked down at the floor. “I made it…quite some time ago, actually.”
“You made this…just for me? Oh Erik…”
He blushed and she placed an unexpected kiss on his lips. He eagerly responded, his tongue gentle yet anxious in its exploration. Effortlessly, he lifted her and carried her off to the swan bed.
