Jacob had curled up with Bella on the couch, eager to show her his sonogram picture. It seemed to upset
her a little because she couldn’t get one, but Jacob was rather proud of his tiny dot. But exhaustion soon took over and he was out cold. He was shaken awake by Edward. “Move, please. Bella is too hot.”
It took a moment for Jacob to get his bearings, but he nodded and moved to one of the chairs. He looked around for Liam and saw him sitting on the floor with the sonogram picture, his lips curled into a soft smile. It was such a small gesture, but it made Jacob feel a million times better. “Isn’t Little Spike adorable?”
Liam didn’t answer right away. “Little Spike, huh? You definitely have the little part right.”
“Yeah. Bella and I got knocked up around the same time, but I still have about four months to go, at least that’s what Carlisle thinks. It won’t be long until he’s bigger.”
All eyes in the room turned to Bella and she blushed a little. Edward was right next to her, looking a little lost in thought. Suddenly his head turned and he looked a little confused. “Bella, did you just say something?”
“No,” she shook her head, looking just as confused.
It was his turn to have a small smile on his face. “I think I just heard the baby.”
“Really?” Bella’s eyes went wide. “What’s he saying?”
“Not much, really. He’s just happy.”
Jacob curled into a ball, his knees up against his chest. He knew Edward wasn’t doing it on purpose, but he kind of felt like his moment had been stolen. Edward was talking about what their baby was thinking, and all he had was a tiny dot on a sonogram. It kind of paled in comparison.
Edward’s gaze turned to Jacob for a moment. “Don’t worry, I’m sure yours will make his debut soon enough. Be patient and enjoy the process.”
The look on Edward’s face made Jacob think of something he hadn’t before. His baby was only a tiny dot because it wasn’t growing at an out of control pace. He was exhausted all the time as it was; he could only imagine what it would do to him if his baby had grown at the same rate Bella’s had. In a way, it was kind of a trade-off.
Edward gave him a little nod, indicating that he was thinking along the same lines. Jacob started to feel a little silly. His jealousy had made him forget all the reasons he’d been so worried about Bella in the first place. Once again he was proud of his tiny dot, and couldn’t wait to watch it grow.
The next morning wasn’t much better. When Carlisle left with Emmett, Jasper, Rosalie, and Esme, the topic of conversation was still Bella’s baby and what it was thinking. Jacob loved his friend, but it was beginning to get on his nerves.
He turned to Liam after he finished breakfast. “Can we get out of the house for a little while?”
“I guess,” Liam answered. “Where do you want to go?”
“Just out. I need to get out of this house.”
Bella peeked over the back of the couch and frowned. “It wasn’t anything I did, was it?”
“No,” Jacob assured her. “I’m just getting a little stir-crazy. I’m not used to being cooped up like this. So, can we go to Seattle again?”
Liam raised an eyebrow. “You know we can’t go clubbing, right?”
“I know. It’s just that I don’t remember much of our last trip. I want to see the sights. It’ll just have to be a short trip.”
Liam sighed. “All right, I guess.”
“Jacob, before you go, could I talk to you in private?” Edward asked.
Jacob couldn’t help but wonder what Edward wanted as he followed him outside. “Ask away,” he said once they were by the garage.
“I know you don’t like even admitting you have any authority, but as Ephraim’s direct descendant, you do.”
Jacob groaned. He already didn’t like where this was going. “Like I told Seth and Leah, I abdicated my alpha status to Sam.”
“Exactly—he only holds that position because you let him. And what about Little Spike? Right now you speak for him, but he is the next generation.”
Jacob’s hand moved to his belly. He hadn’t really thought about it, but Edward had a point. The smug smile on the vampire’s lips annoyed him though. “Get to the point.”
“Well, as the true alpha, I would like to ask your permission to violate the treaty with Bella. I mean, you and I both want her heart to keep beating, but should the worst happen.... Really, this is just a formality, you understand, but still.... When the treaty was made we never intended to break it, but I will do whatever is necessary to keep Bella around.”
Jacob took a moment to let it all sink in. “So, basically, you want my okay to bite her if it looks like she won’t make it?”
“Basically, yes. You and Little Spike hold the true authority, and it would make me feel a little better; Bella, too.”
Jacob didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. Edward was asking his permission to do the very thing Jacob had been trying like hell to keep from happening. His feelings toward the Cullens had softened quite a bit since he’d imprinted on Liam, but he still didn’t want Bella becoming one of them if it could be helped.
He leaned against the garage wall and crossed his arms. “You can have my permission on one condition. It has to be a last resort.”
Edward smiled and nodded. “I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’ve been trying to talk her out of it since we met. She just doesn’t listen.”
“No, she doesn’t,” Jacob agreed. While being friendly was better than fighting all the time, it was still freaking Jacob out a little. He wasn’t speaking to his own family but was now buddy-buddy with a leech! What had the world come to?
Edward only shook his head and walked back to the house. “Hey, those are private thoughts!” Jacob shouted after him.
Edward laughed and turned his head a little when he reached the door. “Then you shouldn’t think them so loudly.”
Their trip to Seattle didn’t take long. Liam borrowed Carlisle’s Mercedes in case it was sunny in Seattle. He didn’t think his brother would mind. Jacob did notice that Liam was driving a little more carefully, especially around traffic, and he wondered if it had anything to do with his condition. “Have you ever been to a museum?” Liam asked when they reached the city limits.
“No,” Jacob answered, “but it sounds like it might be fun.”
“Then that’s where we’ll go first.”
Jacob stared out the window while Liam wove through traffic. It was like a whole different world to him. There were buildings, cars, and people everywhere, unlike Forks where there were so few people that everyone pretty much knew each other. Thankfully it was an overcast day, so they could enjoy themselves without having to worry too much. That was the trouble with having a vampire for a mate; the sun ruined everything.
Liam pulled into a parking lot and escorted Jacob into the art museum. Jacob enjoyed walking around and looking at the paintings and sculptures. Liam didn’t seem all that impressed. Jacob had to remind himself that the Cullens were exceptionally cultured vampires and probably did stuff like this all the time.
Jacob was exhausted by the time they’d finished looking at everything he wanted to see, but he didn’t want to go home just yet, so Liam bought him lunch and took him to a park to eat. They went off into the trees by a little creek and sat in the grass. “Enjoying the sights?” Liam asked.
Jacob nodded as he stuffed a handful of fries in his mouth. “I know you probably didn’t want to come all the way up here, but I really needed to get away. I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy the art.”
“Who says I didn’t? I’ve just seen most of it before, and most of it is younger than I am. I think I belong in a museum.”
“No, you don’t. Well, maybe a painted portrait of you.”
Liam laughed. “If we ever go to London I’ll show it to you.”
Jacob’s eyes went wide. “You mean there’s really a portrait of you in a museum?”
Liam nodded. “Some guy painted me when I was a kid. I went to a little park one day and he asked me if I’d pose for him. I didn’t see the harm in it.”
“Wow.” Jacob shook his head. “There’s still so much I don’t know about you. How old were you?”
“About eleven, I think. He painted me as an angel, if you can believe that.”
“Oh, I believe it. You’re deceptively innocent-looking.”
Liam chuckled and gathered up their garbage to throw it away. “So, what now?”
“We could walk around a little.”
“Are you sure you’re up for that?”
Jacob nodded and got to his feet, grabbing Liam’s hand. They walked around the park, enjoying the scenery. They even stopped at the tennis court and watched a game. They stayed until the sun began to set. “Tired yet?” Liam asked.
“A little,” Jacob admitted, “but if there’s something you want to do, I’m up for it.”
“I want to take you to dinner.”
“Oh, okay,” Jacob said as he got into the car. He was a little confused when Liam drove to the Space Needle. “I thought we were going to dinner.”
“We are. There’s a restaurant up there. It rotates and everything.”
“Not very fast, I hope,” Jacob frowned.
“No, not very fast. You shouldn’t have a problem.”
Jacob wasn’t so sure, but he trusted his mate and followed him inside. They got inside an elevator and Liam took his hand. Jacob nearly fell over when the elevator launched upward. He hoped this wouldn’t take long because it was making him dizzy.
He was not prepared for what he saw when the doors opened. The fanciest place in Forks was the steak house. Sky City restaurant made that place look like a dump. He felt really out of place. “Do you have a reservation?” a man behind a little podium asked.
“No,” Liam answered. It didn’t seem to bother him, but Jacob was a little worried.
“You may have a bit of a wait. Name?”
“Cullen. Liam Cullen.”
The man nodded and wrote down the name. “I’ll see what I can do, sir.”
Jacob couldn’t help but be a little impressed. “Is there any place your name doesn’t mean anything?”
“Sunny places,” Liam answered with a smile. “Money talks, my dear, and you wouldn’t believe how easy it is to save up a lot when you don’t need to spend anything on food and you have a family member who can predict stock prices.”
“Alice does that? It kinda seems like cheating.”
Liam shrugged. “It’s not like we’re stealing it from anybody. We go with the market, we just happen to know what’s coming before anyone else does.”
They didn’t have to wait long for a table. They were led to a nice one by a window. Jacob found the cloth napkins and extra utensils a little intimidating, but he followed Liam’s lead and took a menu to look at. His eyes widened when he saw the prices. “Are you sure about this?”
Liam sighed. “Just relax and enjoy it.”
There was a per person minimum, so Liam had to order something, but when no one was looking he stuffed it all into a plastic bag he hid in his jacket pocket. Jacob had to admit the food was delicious, and he was glad he’d come. Liam paid with a credit card, leaving a very generous tip.
Jacob hated riding the elevator back down, but he toughed it out. Liam pointed out that the only other way down was to jump off the observation deck, and that might draw too much attention. Jacob fell into an uneasy sleep on the ride home. He had a feeling something bad was going to happen.
