James sat beside Caitlin on the floor, Smee stood behind her to aid the Captain should she fall into another fit of hysterics as he had done since he had been called for. Liam of course had been summoned to the cabin, and walked over kneeling on the floor in front of her, holding a cup to her lips. Her shaky hands reached up and wrapped around it, and he helped her drink slowly. James watched her silently, reaching up every now and then swiping the curls back from her face, wanting to comfort her but now sure how.
“What are you having her take?” Hook questioned allowed as his eyes shifted towards the doctor. Once Caitlin had drained the glass, Liam filled it again and had her drain that one as well.
“Its Port Capt’n.” James bristled a bit at that announcement.
“I beg your pardon!?” The Captain’s fist clinching as if he was preparing to strike the surgeon for using such antics as a cure, that one would use whilst wenching in a tavern. Liam filled the glass yet again and handed it back to Caitlin who was able to hold it on her own now, her hands shaking much less then before.
“Its to calm ye misses nerves. She’s half out of her skull Capt’n, somethin’ nearly sacred her into her grave. Once she’s calmed down enough, I’ll give her somethin’ to help her sleep.” Giving port to someone to ‘calm their nerves’ wasn’t really an unheard of practice, and Hook was more then well aware of this. Yet, he still did not like watching another man filling his wife with spirits.
“I’m sorry James.” Hooks eyes shifted quickly from the doctor, to his wife’s trembling voice. Giving a sigh he reached up covering her hand with his.
“Do not apologize, there was nothing you could have done. You are of no blame here.” This was exactly what Liam had been trying to accomplish, and filled her glass one last time and handed it to her. Her tongue was loosening from behind her teeth, so they could perhaps find out what the cause of her attack was.
Cat sipped at the spirits much slower this time, and James reached up running his fingers through her hair, waiting patiently so she didn’t feel rushed or pressured. “James.” She finally whispered softly, her eyes fixed firmly on the glass she held between her hands. “Yes my dear?” Taking a breath she turned away from him, “Are you disappointed with me.”
He knew inside that his words should have been tender and gentle, but with the presence of his surgeon and first-mate he felt his station would not allow him to show compassion when they weren’t alone. “What an absurd question, what on earth put that nonsense into your mind?” Cat just stayed stone silent keeping her eyes turned away, she wasn’t convinced yet she was worried about pursing her questions hearing the tone of his voice.
Liam looked at her face trying to gain her attention but she refused to look at him, “Would ye like to tell us what ye saw that frightened you so?” He said kindly, trying to make her feel comfortable. James eyes narrowed, as the way the doctor spoke made himself sound more concerned about Caitlin’s welfare then her own husband was. Cat closed her eyes looking exhausted and shook her head. It seemed as if this was not going to go anywhere else, and Liam reached out taking her hands, helping her stand to her feet. “Perhaps ye’ll feel better after ye’ve had some rest Misses.”
Those words caught her attention and she looked up at him shaking her head, as she began to pull away shaking her head quickly her eyes going wide with fear. “No, please no, I don’t want to sleep anymore . . . please.” James reached around her holding her in place so she couldn’t run away. She looked up trying to appeal to his mercy now, “James please, I’ve had enough sleep, I’m really not tired anymore I swear it, please!”
“Caitlin, it is all right. Nothing will harm you, I am here by your side as I have been, and I will not leave you.” She shook her head and started trying to pull away, falling into another fit as she struggled harder and harder wanting to escape. Smee quickly jumped in to aid the Captain in restraining her. Hook grit his teeth together, her fear made her amazingly strong and hard to keep a handle on. “What ever your going to give her, give it to her NOW!” He shouted at Liam.
The doctor shook his head and walked back to his kit reaching inside. He hated this, he hated forcing her into doing something she absolutely did not want to do. Caitlin started to claw at both of her captors with her sharp nails, and managed to drag three of them across Smee’s arm digging deep into his skin drawing blood. He grit his teeth and cried out before looking down at her growing angry, “Why ye little Wenc . . .”
Hook’s eyes flashed crimson for a split moment looking at Smee, “I swear if you finish that sentiment you shall lose the vocal cords that rest in your throat and lose the ability to speak for the rest of your days!” Liam quickly came over, holding her face as he quickly gave her the medication he retrieved. Once she had taken it all he stepped back watching her. It took several minutes before she became weakened and her struggling slowed down soon coming to a full halt as she fall unconscious against Hook. James frowned wrapping his arms around her so she wouldn’t fall. “Caitlin?” No response came as she was completely gone. His eyes shifted up towards the doctor, “What the devil did you just pour down her throat!?”
Liam sighed, “Laudanum. She’ll sleep now, and she won’t dream Capt’n. Probley the most restful sleep she’ll have had in weeks.” James eyes darkened, starring at the doctor. He intended to have it out with him here and now for tampering with Cat’s health in such a way, but Caitlin’s body shifted and started to slide to the floor. He quickly caught her and swept her up into his arms, putting his bad arm behind her back to support her. He carried her over to their bed laying her down, pulling a blanket over her. The doctor had already started to tend to the wounds Smee had sustained that were actually pretty deep.
“Methinks she was given the right name by the crew, she has the claws of a hellcat doc.” Liam shook his head binding Smee’s arm in a bandage, tying the gauze just in time, for Smee to be push out of the way and the Doctor sized and thrown against the wall. Hook walked towards him angrily and out of reaction Liam put his arms up to protect himself, but it did little good as James landed his fist hard into the doctors stomach, knocking the wind out of him. Liam fell to the floor coughing violently trying to catch his breath.
Smee watched the scene with his eyes wide, it seemed to come out of nowhere and he took a few steps backwards towards the doors. “Well, I’m glad I could be of help to ye Captain, I think I’ll go check on the watch on deck to make sure they aren’t sleepin’ when they should be watchin’.” Turning on his heel he ran out the door slamming it behind, wanting to get as far away as quickly as his feet would carry him. The Captain’s wrath was upon the doctor and Smee didn’t want to catch any of it himself.
James reached down seizing the back of the Doctors shirt bringing him to his feet and throwing him against the wall again holding him there. “I am no physician but I know the dangers of mixing spirits with such a powerful sedative you moron! Not to mention the amount you had to give her for her to fall under its influence so quickly!” His eyes were turning red as the moments passed. He was not wearing his harness nor his steel appendage, for he was sleeping when Caitlin awoke with horrid shrieks of terror and had not the time to dress properly when she was so distraught.
“Capt’n you saw her, you saw how hysterical she was! You ordered me yerself to do something quickly!” James grit his teeth, his anger almost doubling at the doctor who was supposed to be intelligent enough to look after wounds, perform surgery and cure illnesses trying to shift blame and place it on the Captain of the vessel. Hook plunged his fist into the stomach of the insolent pirate who stood before him. Liam coughed and fell to the floor again, but quickly brought himself to his feet under his own power. “I would ne’re do somethin’ to harm yer wife Capt’n, I swear it. She will be better and more reasonable once she wakes. She hasn’t had a decent rest in weeks Capt’n, since she returned from the island, it may have a barin’ on her erratic behavior and havin’ such a difficult time with everythin’ that’s been happenin’.”
“Of course she is! Since she was young she had it pounded into her head that strange things are not possible, young boys cannot fly, children have parents or care takers and do not run wild in the forest on their own, fairies do not exists and they are just large fireflies with teeth that attack her like some sort of mosquito, and magic is not real. On top of all of these things that her eyes have beheld with disbelief and the impression that she must be mad to see such things so she does not question them allowed for fear no one else is seeing them as she has, she has a dream to remind her that she cannot bare offspring, the deepest desire of her heart and the cause of the worst pain in her life since the very day she found out!” Hook’s fist clenched again preparing to deliver another blow, to take out his frustration and anger on the one who held such an unnatural interest in his wife.
“Capt’n, she was lied to.” Liam said quickly looking up at the Captain, taking a step back not wanting to be struck again. Hook stopped pausing for a moment, looking at the doctor.
“What in the HELL is that supposed to mean!” He shouted, having no patients for cryptic bits of unclear information. Liam took a quick breath as he had halted the Captain’s brutal beating of the ships surgeon.
“It’s what I wanted to tell ye Capt’n, it’s what I tried to tell ye the night ye had me examine her and ye wanted me to lie to her for ye plan. I didn’t want to tell her something falsely that I knew to be true.” Hook’s eye begin to twitch as he closed his eyes trying to suppress the rage he wanted to unleash on this man long enough to find out exactly what the devil anything he said meant.
“Doctor, you have precisely 30 seconds to tell me in plan speech any information you have CONCERING MY BRIDE WHOSE HEALTH YOU HAVE INDANGERED NOT 10 MINUTES AGO!!!” He roared, trying to stay his hand from the dagger on his desk and plunged it through the heart in the man’s chest.
“She’s not barren Capt’n, she is fully capable of caring yer child. There be not a thing wrong with her in that regard. Some severe scarring, that scream that the wounds she sustained were extensive and should have killed her.” Hook was frozen in place at this news, as it was taking a few long moments to sink in. Liam looked at him for a moment taking this opportunity with the Captain in a stunned state to ask the question he wanted to for a long time, “Capt’n, what happened to her. The scar on her back, and the scars ye can’t see just by looking at her because they be inside her. What could have caused it?”
Hooks eyes narrowed not looking at him recalling the passages in her book. “She fell. Pushed by one of the siblings of the family she was placed with after her parents passing. Out of a window of the second story of the house where they dwelled. A very disturbed young man that disliked her from the day she stepped in through the door. He was much older then she, he had no business being so rough with her.” He turned still in a state of shock as he walked to his desk sitting down in his chair as he retrieved her journal and threw it on his desk, opening it to the passages that described it. Caitlin did not write it anywhere in her journal, he knew this because he searched cover-to-cover trying to find it. But James was certain this boy who had almost succeeded in sending her to her parents, was the one that caused Caitlin such a strong objection to being touched in anyway. The same reason why she kept running from him in the beginning rather then submitting to him, did not trust him so easily, and kept herself hidden at all times.
“She landed on a sharpened post, I suppose it was meant for some sort of fence or something, she does not say. It ripped through her back and up through her body, skewering her like some sort of animal placed on a spit to be roasted over a flame. The angle at which she fell, her head was pointed towards the ground, and her unbalanced weight. . . “ He paused for a moment, actually feeling ill as his mind went as far as to imagine the pain she must have been in, and the horror of the sight itself, “ . . . pulled her down . . . further onto the spike, ripping the wound of her back open even further. Hence the reason the horrendous scar that adorns her beautiful, and otherwise perfect skin. The way she was harmed is the reason there is only the one scar and not more.”
Now the shock was Liam’s, as he stepped forward almost speechless, not quiet understanding how she could have survived. “How . . . Capt’n, it should have killed her how could it be she survived?” Hook smirked slightly, his look darkening as his eyes shifted towards the doctor.
“The mortal world has changed quite extensively since we left it you imbecile, do you think medical science would have stayed the same while the rest of the world changed around it.” His eyes shifted again as if starring off into his own thoughts, “Even so, she describes how many times they had to perform surgery on her body, how many times they were sure she was not going to survive. But she did.” Liam was still confused and stepped forward trying to form his questions.
“But . . . Capt’n, the loss of blood she . . . , the . . . the injury itself . . .” James closed his eyes growing annoyed at this man once again gritting his teeth.
“I suggest that you leave my cabin and keep your idiotic curiosities to yourself Doctor, before I recall the carelessness in which you administered such a dangerous treatment to my wife. She is here by some miracle, perhaps even by her deceased parents aid when she lay dying, and THAT is enough.” Liam fell silent and took a step back. James eyes opened glaring at the man, “Have that disgusting young wretch below cleaned from head to toe and given some decent clothing. I have no intention of letting him near Caitlin without being disinfected and being presentable.” The doctor just nodded before turning and limping out the door of the cabin, the beating he had just sustained already bruising and leaving him sore.
Perhaps once Caitlin awoke, he would have quite a few gifts to give her. The redheaded boy below and the news the doctor had just given him. He hadn’t decided for sure that he was going to tell her, he honestly had no desire to have children. Giving it though he decided that he would wait a bit before telling her, and would simply be careful when they lay together so he would not impregnate her.
His eyes shifted down to her journal that lay open before him, and he at once threw it into the bottom drawer of his desk slamming it closed. Too many horrific images and memories lay within those pages. Once Caitlin was secured fully in this world and her new life by his side, he would destroy the book so that she would never remember her old life and the terrors she had faced. Leaning back in his chair, James eyes wondered to his own injury with a sigh.
“How on earth did you mange to escape all the demons of hell Caitlin, and go through life with a kind heart, and a soft touch, and caring voice. You should be as angry and filled with hatred as I.” He couldn’t explain it, what made her so different and why he had been drawn to her in the first place. However, those were the details he did not think on to much. She was here, she was his, and the small things did not matter.
Early the next morning James appeared on deck, surprising the entire crew who did not expect to see him today. They groaned and drug there feet knowing this only meant more work for them on a whim of their Captain. His eyes looked about the crew for a moment, before walking down the stairs to the main deck to the side rail looking down into the water. He seemed to be working out the final details of a plan he had devised the night before. Reaching into his pocket he pulled Aurora’s leash, jerking her from her hiding place.
“Go find a good one and bring her back here to the ship.” He ordered removing the collar around the small fairy’s neck releasing her. Aurora nodded quickly and flew off over the water, her purple glow shining brightly as she hurried away. James turned around, “Get the net prepared to capture!” He shouted across the deck. The pirates looked around at each other uncertain of what was going on, but knew better then to question Hook’s orders. Smee quickly walked up beside James.
“Anythin’ you’ll be wantin’ done Capt’n?” He questioned, not having been informed of what was going on.
“When our pesky little pixie returns, she will have a rather large and angry creature on her heels. I want that creature she was sent to find captured and hauled onto the deck.” Smee’s eyes shifted from left to right before smiling giving a salute.
“Yes sir Capt’n! I’ll see it’s done personally!” He hesitated a moment before daring to ask. “Uh, Capt’n has ye misses woken up or stirred since last night?” He questioned quietly. Hook turned glaring at his first mate for bringing up such a tender subject. Smee swallowed and gave a nod, “Well, I’ll just be . . . getting’ to work then, shall I Capt’n?” Turning on his heel he hurried off to see to his task. James pulled out his scope combing over the horizon keeping an eye out for his tiny bait, and her prize she was sent to bring back with her.
Elsewhere in Neverland, Peter and Tinkerbell were being brought up to speed on the events that took place while they were away. The lost the youngest of the boys, and the woman pirate they had kidnapped. Peter shook his head growing angry, “Where is the one I left in charge!” Peter demanded drawing his sword searching through the faces, yet he saw him nowhere. The lost boys eyes all turned downward and they removed their hats. The expressions on their face and this small gesture, said the boy was no longer with them. Pan lowered his sword a moment. “We lost two of our own, and the woman as well. How could have things gone worse while I was away.”
His eyes looked around to each of the lost boys once again, “Why did you try to kill her? Did she try to escape?” He questioned, hating how his game had been ruined by these turn of events. The boys all shook there heads staying quiet.
“She didn’t escape until after, we’d decided we were gonna . . . . kill her.” One voice spoke up telling him what had transpired. Peter frowned at the group of boys.
“WHY!?! Hook did not come after her, she did not try to escape, she couldn’t even move the way we tied her! Why would you want to kill her! That makes us no better then the pirates and Hook!” The boys looked at each other keeping their eyes off of their leader as they continued to be scolded for such reckless stupidity.
“What do we do now Peter? Do we attack them and bring her back?” Peter shook his head. “No, we shall have to move our hideout, Hook and his woman found it they will know where to find us if we don’t move quickly. Once we have found safety, then we will deal with Captain Hook!” All the boys nodded and broke apart to gather their things so they could leave together and find a new place to live.
