All righty... I'm posting this soon to kind of make up for the lapse last week. :)
By the time we were finally able to get out the door, it was late morning. I really was excited about prom. Actually, I was more excited about going with Jasper. I sounded like such a girl, but I didn’t care.
At the tuxedo store, Jasper had insisted I try on tuxes first. We weren’t looking for vests and ties yet; we would do that separately.
I was currently trying on a solid ebony tux with a simple, black dress shirt. If I could get the vest I wanted, the entire black ensemble would look best. The tux was a little stiff, but it was the most comfortable of the ones I had tried on, though the polyester of the stiffened dress shirt chafed a little at my chest.
I ran a finger gently over the feathery silk of my lapel, for it was far too soft to be faux satin, and stepped out to show Jasper, but he wasn’t there. Instead, a professionally dressed brunette woman seemed to be waiting on me.
“Where’s Jasper?” I asked warily.
“He went to look at some other tuxes,” she replied. “I’m Julie. I work here.”
“Ah.”
“That tux looks great on you, but you don’t have all the shirt buttons done.” She stepped forward to button the top few buttons of the shirt; she gasped.
“What?”
“What happened to your neck?”
I clamped my hand over Jasper’s bite mark. “Nothing.”
“It looked like a bite mark.”
“It’s nothing.” I turned away slightly and finished buttoning the shirt.
“Hey, Whitaker, I was thinking…” I turned towards Jasper’s voice. He was holding a white tux and standing frozen, his mouth slightly agape.
“If you keep standing like that, you’ll have a fly or two buzzing in your mouth.” His jaw snapped up with an audible clack. I smirked and turned around, holding my arms out partially as I showed off the tuxedo. “What do you think? Julie says it looks good.”
“I like it. Wait…Julie?”
“Yeah.” I pointed my thumb back at the brunette behind me. “The sales rep.”
“You remembered her name,” he pointed out.
“…Yeah.”
“How many times did she have to tell you her name?”
“Once…”
Jasper smiled. “Getting better,” he murmured.
“So…” Julie broke the silence. “Would you like me to hold this one for you at the counter?”
I looked at the price tag, and I swear my eyes bugged out of my head. “Dang it,” I muttered.
“What?”
“I can’t afford it…” I admitted.
“I’ll take care of it,” Jasper jumped in.
“No, I can’t let you—”
“Whitaker.” I stopped talking. “I’ll take care of it.” His tone held no room for argument.
I nodded and turned back to Julie. “Yes, please.”
When I had carefully divested myself of the tuxedo, I gave it to Julie and waited on Jasper to try on his. He had a black one or two, but then he tried on the solid white tux and white dress shirt.
“That’s it,” I said when he walked out of the dressing room. The bright white cloth made his pale skin appear darker.
“Do you like it?” He was worried again.
I stood. “Yes. We’ll be opposites.” I straightened his collar. “It’ll look great.”
He smiled devilishly and stepped back toward the dressing room. “Want to help me get this thing off?”
“I had to manage on my own.”
He turned puppy dog eyes on me. “Please?”
“We need that in one piece for at least a little while.” He stuck his bottom lip out in a pout, but I resisted and shook my head.
“Fine. You’re no fun…”
“I’m lots of fun. Just not here where a lot of people can hear.” He poked his head back out of the changing room.
“Is that a promise?”
“That’s a fact. A promise would be telling you what I’m going to do to you when we get home.”
His eyes darkened perceptibly.
“Hurry and change so I can keep my promises.”
“Aye, aye captain.” He gave me a mock salute and disappeared behind the door.
I smiled and was going to sit down, but I ran into Julie when I turned around.
“Are you… Are y-you two…together?” she asked.
I put on my best shocked face. “What gave us away?”
“Um…the whole…‘doing things when we get home’…”
“Friends kid each other about that kind of thing, you know.”
“Oh.” I could feel Jasper’s disappointment. He had recently managed to control his emotions enough that I was the only one to feel them.
“But, yes, we’re together.” His disappointment changed to relief and happiness. “That won’t be a problem, I trust.”
“No. It’s just… Damn, all the hot ones are taken or gay…or both.” I smiled wistfully towards the room Jasper was in.
“Yeah… He’s pretty sexy.”
“Your boy looks good and all, but I actually wasn’t talking about him.”
“Huh?”
“Come on, you must know how you look. That shirt, simple as it is, makes you look even better.” I looked down at the long-sleeve tee I wore. It was a little tighter than I was used to, but that was because Jasper asked me to wear it.
“Um…not really.”
“Dude, you’re hot.” Jasper laughed loudly at my shock.
“Stop eavesdropping,” I called. He only chuckled and fell silent. “He has very good hearing,” I stage whispered. “Like a bat, he is.”
Julie giggled. “Seriously, though. Doesn’t he ever tell you how good you look?”
“Well, yeah, but… He’s my boyfriend.”
“So? Don’t you believe him?”
I shifted uncomfortably. “I’m not used to being noticed…”
“Ah.” She patted my shoulder. “Well, get used to it.”
Jasper walked up to us with his white tux, which he handed to Julie before wrapping an arm around my waist.
“Have you looked at the vests yet?” he asked.
“No. Why?” I replied.
“I already picked mine out.”
“Then I’d better get my butt in gear.”
He smirked. “What kind of gear?”
Instead of responding, I pulled away from him and walked towards the vests.
“Fine. I’ll go pay while you look.” I was glad he realized I at least wanted to pay for my vest.
“Don’t look.” I felt his mirth and lust as I’m sure he thought of some rather inappropriate situations.
Surprisingly, the store had the vest I wanted. It was mostly white with a gold swirling pattern. Its tie was a regular necktie instead of a bowtie. It would look great with my black tuxedo. I couldn’t help but wonder what Jasper had picked out.
I paid and met Jasper outside. Luckily, the garment bags they had placed our formal clothes in were opaque, so he couldn’t see my vest and tie.
“So what did you get?” he asked.
“You’ll see.”
What do you think? Not much happening, I know, but there's more to come! (pun so intended)
