Chapter 33: Hopes shattered
Drizzt smiled, hearing Bruenor’s rumbling laughter rolling through the hallway – a result of the joke Wulfgar just had given about the difference between goblins and fish. A joke, that the drow had not the heart to tell he did not understood…
Yet, the appearance of a clearly agitated dwarf, running towards the small group, immediately sobered the roaring Bruenor. And, as soon as the winded dwarf had given the message of Catti-brie was unwell, the drow found his mind go numb. He broke into an immediate run, sprinting down the tunnels and passages in a speed only few had seen him move in before – even jumping right over a group of two dwarves standing near the passages leading to the smithies.
However, as he reached the Healer’s quarters, his senses informing him that his dear wife was there, he stopped dead in his tracks, a sudden terror of what would greet him when he pushed those doors open made him hesitate for a moment. He had faced orcs, demons and countless battles without flinching – yet this situation was one he suddenly realised he could not fight his way out of. Falling back to the Hunter would not aid him the least with this…
Swallowing thickly, reminding himself of who he was, Drizzt Do’Urden pushed the door open and carefully looked in, fearing the worst.
To his relief, Catti-brie lay, though clearly exhausted and unwell, alive in the bed, with Stumpet fussing over her. The elf moved in, silently trotting over to the bed, and taking a seat on the mattress.
“What happened?” he asked in a soft voice, gently taking one of Catti-brie’s hands and slowly stroked it, to let her know he was here now.
“’Twas the babe..,” the cleric whispered. “Birth started too early… I’m sorry, Drizzt, but there’s nothin’ I could’ve done.”
Staring at the dwarf for a few seconds, the words slowly sinking into his mind, the drow slowly understood the complications of what had just happened. Surprised by the sting of tears in his eyes, he looked down at Catti-brie, only now noticing the utter look of loss within her eyes, mingled with the tears that she, too, shed.
When she reached for him, he complied, gathering her in his arms, and holding her close.
Stumpet, thankfully, knew they needed some time to cope with the new change, and left the room, giving them what privacy they might need.
For a while, they simply sat, taking comfort in the presence of the other, until Catti-brie at end broke the silence between them, whispering a low apology.
“It wasn’t your fault,” he muttered in reply, pressing a kiss against her red mane.
“Maybe… Maybe we oughtn’t get kids..,” she murmured, resting her head on his shoulder.
Drizzt looked at her with mild surprise.
“I mean – mayhap gettin’ a child o’ our own wouldn’t be a good idea,” Catti-brie softly continued, seeming to talk as much to herself as she was to him. “A child from us, no matter how much love we give him or her, would always face hostility from many they meet… I.. I ain’t be thinkin’ ‘tis a fate any child should have…”
“I know, Catti..,” he replied in an equal low voice, pulling her close again, and resting his cheek on the top of her head. “I know. But.. I thought you wanted to have a child?”
“Aye… But.. Maybe it’d be too selfish of us…”
Again, long minutes passed in silence between them.
“You know..,” the drow elf slowly said. “We could always adopt… There are so many children who have lost their parents to war and orcs, and who needs a home…”
Catti-brie looked at him with a slight smile.
“Yes.. We could,” she finally said, nodding lightly, as if agreeing to an unspoken deal.
With a sigh, she snuggled close to him again, resting and allowing the exhaustion and grief, the loss of their unborn child had brought with it, to fade, letting their minds heal the wound.
A/N: Okay, short like the last one. Fear not, dear faithful readers who have put up with my random and oft far-between updates, for the next chapter is already up.
