James still stood on deck waiting for the first sign of his smallest crewmember to return to the ship, performing her task. It was a rather clever plan he had devised, for he had plenty of time the night before. Unable to sleep and watching over Caitlin while she rested in her drug induced slumber. Today she would rest, until the drugs she had been given ran the course and at last released her from their grasp.
Inside he was felling as though he committed the most heinous of crimes letting the doctor give her the pharmaceutical after she pleaded not to be sent back into the state her dreams could terrorize her in. Weather she would hold it against him or not, would not be found out until she awoke. Hook loved her completely and tried his utmost to do what was right for her, but he did not fully know how to do so. He couldn’t mend the old wounds her body had sustained anymore then she could heal his.
However there was one small factor that caused him more guilt then any of the other factors. He knew there was going to be no shock, no searching, no hysterics, no utter frustration caused by not understanding what was tormenting his wife . . . and he was glad for it. Caitlin was locked away safely in his cabin in a deep and blissful slumber. It had been weeks since there had been a moment’s peace. James could not live without Caitlin; there was no doubt about that. Yet he was hoping that their lives would calm down soon and not be so dramatic and hectic non-stop.
James would cherish the chance to spend a nice quiet evening before a roaring fire in his cabin, with Caitlin by his side laying on the bear skin rug, sipping cognac, enjoying pleasant conversation, and the gift of just being together. He had imagined this scene more then once even before he brought Caitlin back to Neverland with him. James supposed that it was a luxury afforded to normal lovers. Lovers whose start in their new life together had not been as unusual and traumatic as theirs.
“Capt’n! Here she comes!” Came a pirates voice from up in the crow’s nest. All eyes turned upwards to see what direction she had been spotted in. The entire crew shifted to the other side of the ship, and James looked through his spyglass, seeing the small purple glow he knew to be Aurora flying as fast as her little wings would flutter coming up fast on the ship. Behind her, a creature swimming angrily after her splashing about as she glided through the water.
James lowered his glass and looked at Smee, “Hoist and raise the net!” His first mate turned and passed the order onto the crew while James walked along the railing watching intently. Hook caught sight of the ships surgeon out of the corner of his eye and turned towards him, “Prepare the boy to be brought on deck on my command.” Liam had given up on arguing or questioning the Captain; he decided his wounds that had been awarded him for these indiscretions needed time to heal. Silently he nodded and disappeared below decks.
James turned back to the rail and raised his hook preparing to give the signal to drop the net. “There is a window for only one shot! If we miss it, it shall be YOUR HEADS ON THE CHOPPING BLOCK!!!” Hook shouted in warning to the crew so they would pay attention. A few more moments passed and James raised his hook higher. All at once, Aurora flew through a porthole on the side of the ship and the creature few up trying to catch her. At that moment, James gave the signal and the net was launched.
Everyone looked over the side of the railing as the creature was trapped in the ropes, struggling to get free to no avail. A smile swept the Captain’s face as he turned back and shouted at Smee, “Get her on deck immediately!” Smee turned around appointing four pirates to start turning the wench. The rope pulled tight, and quickly the crew worked to bring their prize aboard. The creature fought, and kicked, and made horrid noises letting all know of her anger and displeasure for being stolen away from her home. Once at the rail, they pulled her over and let her flop onto the deck.
Instantly she began to kick her fin and fight harder, hissing and clawing at whoever she could, her eyes glowing as red as the Captain’s did when he was preparing to gut an insubordinate. Smee shouted orders at the crew to tie her down and secure her, and more ropes where thrown over the netting to hold her against the deck. Once she stopped throwing herself about and could do nothing more then lay still and breathe, Hook stepped through the circle of pirates and looked down at their newest guest. Her eyes shifted towards his, and it was if they could see into each other’s souls. The dark and evil bond they shared, made it extremely easy for them to understand each other.
“Honestly, why you and your kind cater to that young miscreant I shall never know. You should long for his death as much as I.” Bending down he looked at her closer, his eyes still locked onto hers. She quieted now as she starred at the evil Captain, taking long deep breathes. “It is difficult is it not? To accept that we are nearly one and the same? Yet you and your sisters all hold your ears to the haul of my ship and report anything and everything you can back to the leader of the lost boys. Interesting enough, weather it be a lost boy or a pirate that falls into the cold waters, they do not survive very long and their bodies are dragged away to be food or play things for the mermaids.” A smile crosses the mermaids lips as she listened to him talk. It was obvious she and the rest of the creatures like her, held no remorse or regret for the lives they took nor the practices with the carrion that was left behind.
“Listen to me, dark creature of the sea . . . I have a message for the one that you so hungrily serve. I am exhausted; he and his lost boys have caused quite a bit of damage to the female that is aboard this ship. Enough is quite enough, as she is not part of this game nor the quarrel between Pan and myself. Each time she is attacked, approached, kidnapped, or harassed in anyway, you may tell your hero of justice that five of his lost boys will parish. I vow they will not suffer quick and painless deaths, it will be as long and painful as my imagination can devise.” Hook’s eyes shifted towards Smee who understood and disappeared from the deck before he looked back down at his Captive. “May I add, that the same order goes for every other creature in Neverland, weather it be Indian, fairy, human . . . . or mermaid. She belongs to me, and not another soul may touch her!”
A moment later, Smee brought the red-headed boy out onto the deck where the mermaid could see. Her eyes shifted to the small boy and narrowed as she recognized him almost immediately. She opened her mouth and let out a loud shrill shriek that caused the rest of the crew and even the small boy to cover their ears. Hook smirked letting her make all the noise she wished. “And you may tell Pan, that I will begin with this boy should he decide to test my resolve.” She hissed and growled at him, pushing against the netting. A look of pure evil filled Hook’s eyes and he reached down and pushed his hook under some of the scales of her tail, before tearing them off letting them fall to the deck. She screamed out closing her eyes as her tail flapped hard.
“You shall find it pays to behave whilst I am speaking with you mermaid. My patients wears thin with this world and its constant disregard for its inhabitants!” She opened her eyes looking up at him again staying silent now. “Send him my message immediately, and take it back to your fellow creatures as well!” He shouted at her before standing and turning his back walking away. Instantly the crew jumped on her anxious to put her back over the side and get her off of the ship. Once the net that held her was hung over the rail, they opened it turning her loose as she plunged deep into the water.
Smee still dragging the boy with him walked over to the Captain keeping his voice low, “Capt’n, do ye think it wise? Upsetting the mermaid like that?” Hook rolled his eyes taking out his handkerchief wiping the scales from his hook. Giving a slight smirk.
“You think that was a cry of pain do you.” He said his eyes shifting up towards Smee. “She enjoyed that immensely, I could feel it when she looked back to my eyes.” Hook turned his attention to the red-headed boy who looked much different now. He had been bathed and clothed in material that was not moth eaten and dirty and his hair had been combed and cut to a shorter length. “Its is a vast improvement I must say. The smell still lingers however, so have him bathed yet again. That is all Caitlin needs right now, exposure to a sewer rat.” “Aye, Cap’n.” Smee said before dragging the boy back below decks.
Meanwhile back in the lost boy’s hollow, each one was packing up his belongings getting them ready to move. Tinkerbell flew around watching everyone making sure nothing was left behind. She stopped suddenly in mid air, fluttering her wings a few times. Turning around she saw some dark dust on the pillow of the boy who was no longer with them. Flying down she ran her finger through it looking curiously. Rubbing it between her fingers a moment before taking a slight taste, her eyes went wide. She recognized it instantly as the black dust that was used by those who indulged in dark magic. Quickly she used both hands to scoop some up and flew into the air looking for Peter.
Peter was packing up his own belongings, making sure not to leave anything behind. He paused suddenly when a small silver object caught his eye. He scooped the small object up into his hand looking at it a moment before walking over and sitting down on his bed. Peter recognized it almost instantly as Wendy’s Kiss. Placing it on the tip of his finger, he remembered everything about her and the adventures they had shared together. He had made a promise when he left her behind in the mortal world that he would not forget her, and although Neverland delighted in it’s game with those who find its memories, this small trifle insured that. Each time he saw it, it brought her back to his memory as clear as the day she came back with him.
Just then, Tinkerbell flew in fluttering before his eyes, talking non-stop as fast as her small body would allow her to. Peter focused on her trying to make some sense of her ramblings and follow her words. “No wait, Tink! I don’t understand. Why must you go to the fairies now? What law has been broken?” Tinkerbell’s little body turned red with anger at her frustration and she stopped taking a deep breath. She explained about the black dust she had found, what it was, and what it was used for. That it had most likely used to push the lost boys into madness in wanting to do away with the Pirate lady. Peter’s eyes narrowed looking about before looking back at Tinkerbell, “I’m going with you.” He said getting up from his bunk and flying after the small creature as they headed towards the fairy hollow.
Back on the Jolly Rodger, Aurora flew up from the decks below to her pocket in the Captain’s vest, peeking her small head out beaming up at him. Hook looked down at her, “You did well for your first real mission.” He said giving a dry and emotionless pat on the head as he would to any other on the crew who didn’t screw up severely. She didn’t even care that it was not heartfelt, he had said it and her little wings started to flutter in a sense of pure joy and utter happiness. Nuzzling back down in his pocket, she curled up against his chest listening to his heartbeats.
James turned and headed up the stairs that led to his cabin, there would be nothing to do now but wait. Someone was going to respond, it was just a matter of who and when. Locking the doors behind he took off his hat and threw it aside heading for his bed. As he had left her, Caitlin had not moved nor stirred from where she had been laid the night before. Reaching up he placed his hand on her chest, making sure she was still breathing, worried that the mixture might take her in her sleep. Her skin was a bit on the cold side so he pulled another blanket over her to keep her warm.
Aurora poked her head up to see what was going on, finding they had returned to the Cabin and once again her Captain was fawning over that dumb human woman. She gave a sigh and watched feeling as if she was going to be sick. James reached up and swiped a few strains of hair from Caitlin’s face before leaning down and placing a gentle kiss on her forehead, then one more against her soft sweet lips. “I am sorry Caitlin.” He whispered to her while she slept, knowing she probley couldn’t here him. “You can not fathom how deeply I regret all of these horrible things befalling you. I brought you here hoping to take you away from your old life, and give you a new one.” His eyes shifted downwards a moment as he left his hand resting on her chest over her heart. “Why do I feel as if I failed miserably.” His blew eyes shifted up towards his sleeping beauty once again, “Look at you Caitlin. Terrified to sleep, terrified of me . . . your own husband, terrified of nearly all things outside of this cabin. You are strong, I have seen it with my own eyes and I see the heart of a lioness inside of you . . . but even the strongest of hearts has their breaking point. I only pray that we have not found yours.”
Sitting in his pocket, Aurora narrowed her eyes looking down at Cat. Maybe she hadn’t found the breaking point yet, but she surely had every intention of finding it. There was nothing the miniature creature wanted more then for this woman to lose her mind, to become so much of a burden to her Captain that he himself slit her throat and threw her body overboard. Oh what a perfect and wonderful day that would be! Aurora would watch and dance on the rail as the creatures carried the human woman’s lifeless body away.
James gave a sigh leaning down kissing her lips once more before rising from the bed and walking to his desk. Sitting down in his chair he gave a sigh, hating this feeling of not being in control. Aurora looked up at him for a moment, and then looked back to where Caitlin was sleeping. Growing hopeful and bold, the small fairy crawled up from James’ pocket and sat down on his shoulder looking up at him. The Captain’s eyes shifted towards her. “We have grown quite bold have we not? You know I want you hidden at all times from Caitlin’s eyes.” Aurora fluttered her wings taking her body before his eyes as she folded her hands together and closed her eyes resting her head on them. Making soft sounds of sleep. James rolled his eyes, “True, she is showing no signs of awakening in the near future.”
Aurora was trying to look sympathetic even though she felt pure glee on the inside that he was talking to her and not concerned about the hellcat seeing her for the first time. Making a few more motions James rolled his eyes, “Oh quiet your thoughts on such a thing you vile creature!” He shouted at her. Aurora flew back a little looking frightened and regretful. “She is my wife, tis what she was chosen for and brought here to be. I am well beyond tired of every person aboard this ship wanting her to ‘disappear’.” The small fairy quickly thought before making more motions to him. Hook raised his brow at her next statement. “Oh you think so, do you.” She nodded and continued on with her motions.
“Somehow, I doubt very much she is the type to fawn over such material things Miss Sun.” Aurora flew over to the other side of James desk and pulled back the cover that laid over a book, revealing it to be the journal with Caitlin’s name that he had given her. She made more motions, telling him how much she loved the gift he had given her and another she would love just as much. James thought for a moment, before looking back at the fairy. It wasn’t a half bad idea that she had suggested, but he couldn’t help but wonder. “Why this sudden interest in my brides welfare? I recall your hesitation with helping me retrieve her from her captors on the island.”
The pixie thought on this for a moment, before smiling brightly making a sign that meant piece among fairy kind. James smirked, “I see, bygones are bygones. You shall forgive me if I am still quite skeptical at this new leaf you have chosen to turn over where Caitlin is concerned.” His eyes narrowed looking at her before snatching her out of the air and turning his chair about to face a mirror, holding her up to it. “Haven’t you noticed, your colors have gotten darker still? Honestly, you look like some small creature of darkness that is in tuned with all things evil and mysterious. I can hide my indiscretions and the beast that grows within. You however, can not hide it as it chances your very appearance.”
Aurora fell silent as her wings fluttered open and closed slowly. It had been a very long time since she had just looked at herself. Her Captain’s words were right, she looked nothing like she did before they left Neverland. Aurora’s small hands reached up and touched her face, and hair, and the leafs she wore. When had her looks changed so very much? When did this happen without her knowing or realizing it? Hook watched her reactions for a moment before turning away from the mirror and dropping her back on his desk.
“Return to your quarters immediately Miss Sun, you should not be out in the open like this.” He ordered her. She stood up and looked at him, not wanting to leave from his presence yet but wanting to do as he requested her. Slowly she flew away from his office and back to her glass lantern, closing the door behind her.
James leaned back in the chair, his eyes shifting back to where Caitlin rested. The thought that perhaps his warning he had sent to all of Neverland might soon be taken as a challenge, and perhaps it was not wise in the sense that those individuals would want to see if they could steal away the woman aboard the ship just to defy the ‘Evil Captain Hook’. Caitlin had already proved she could defend herself; her talents for self-defense were vast as she had taken lesson after lesson feeling as though the only way she was to survive was to take care of herself and trust no one else to do it. It was a quality that James himself prized and that thought brought a smile to his face. Once she was adjusted to this place and her health had returned, they would be able to fight side by side and share in the adventures that each day would bring.
Peter Pan waited outside of the fairy hollow for Tinkerbell, looking in through the openings in the side of the massive tree that was the home to all of these small creatures. He was growing impatient, it had been quite sometime since she had disappeared inside and there was no word. Something strange was going on and his boys had fallen pray to some sort of prank that made them mad with blood thirst, which made him extremely annoyed. After what seemed an eternity Tinkerbell emerged from the hollow looking up at Peter with a grave and saddened look. Peter leaned closer to her, “Tink? Tink what is it? What’s the matter?” He questioned following after her until she landed on a branch that was at his eye level.
She began to make signs and explain to him what she had found out and what was going on. Peter listened watching her intently. “So . . . what is the penalty for practicing in dark magic for fairies?” He questioned. Tinkerbell’s head hung low a moment as she reached up and drew her finger across her throat, meaning ‘death’. Peter’s look grew solemn as well. It was never a happy time when one of your own was condemned to death and would be executed as soon as they were captured. Peter took a breath looking at Tinkerbell, “Who is it, Tink? Who has been doing these things.” Tinkerbell sighed and shrugged her shoulders; no one had a clue of who it could be. Fairies disappeared every day, and it would be hard to know who had just left the family and who had died due to someone not believing in their kind.
After another long moment of silence Tink shook her head flying up next to Peter taking a strong stance knowing what had to be done. Peter nodded, “Your right Tink, we must find this fairy before she can spread further mayhem and cast more of her dark spells.” Both of the two companions flew up into the air, heading back to the Lost Boys hideout to finish their move and explain the situation. Now they would begin the search for this fairy to put a stop to her evil deeds.
