Jacob spent the day trying not to think about Bella, though it was hard because Renesmee was the center of attention. Then shortly after dinner Carlisle announced that he believed the transformation was nearly complete.
“That was fast,” Jacob commented, rising from his seat.
Liam guided him to sit back down by placing a hand on his shoulder and pushing him back onto the couch. “You should probably stay here. We don’t know what to expect.”
“True, I guess.” Jacob couldn’t exactly argue. He was hoping the Bella he’d once known and loved would still be there, but honestly he wasn’t holding out much hope.
Rosalie took Renesmee and the rest of the family made their way to the basement. They didn’t want any creature with a heartbeat around Bella for now. She was going to be thirsty, and they were taking no chances.
The Cullen family gathered around the table where Bella’s cold, pale body lay motionless. Her heart was still beating, but it was getting weaker by the second. “Is she suffering?” Edward asked, looking at his father and uncle.
Liam chose his words carefully. “She’s been unconscious, and my venom acts quickly. This is even quicker than I expected.”
Edward seemed to be comforted, but the truth was Bella was probably in agony. He remembered it all too well. The venom of the ancient Rudulfo Volturi had been exceptionally potent, and vampires tended to take after their sires. Odds were good that Bella was staying as still as she was to keep Edward from worrying.
Bella’s heart contracted one last time and stilled. It was over. “Bella?” Edward reached out to stroke her hair.
In the blink of an eye Bella bolted off the table and crouched in a corner, glaring at her new family. Jasper, Emmett, and Liam stepped forward. If things got out of control they would handle it. But just as quickly as Bella had gone on the defensive, she straightened and stared at them curiously.
“Disappointed?” Edward asked as he approached her cautiously.
She shook her head and fixed her gaze on him. Liam always found it amusing to watch newborns take in everything for the first time. Bella’s human senses would be nothing compared to her new ones. Even Liam had to admit that was one of the plusses of being turned.
“You and Liam should probably take her hunting,” Carlisle said to Edward. “She’s no doubt very thirsty.”
Bella’s hand moved to her throat as if she’d suddenly noticed the intolerable burning. Liam couldn’t help but smirk. She was more like him than he’d expected. She was probably going to be fine, though keeping her away from people for a while was still a good idea.
She caught her reflection in a glass cabinet and became preoccupied with that. “The eyes…” she finally said. Her eyes were a deep burgundy, probably not what she’d expected. “How long?”
“A few weeks, at least,” Carlisle answered. “It takes a while for the color to dilute. If your sire is anything to go by, though, it should take less time than it did for the rest of us.”
Bella didn’t seem pleased with the answer. “My sire? But didn’t Edward . . . ?”
“No.” Liam shook his head. “I did. You were clinically dead, and my venom works faster.”
Bella looked at Carlisle. “Do you remember when I was explaining chromosomal pairs to you?” he asked. She nodded. “It works for our extra two the same way the rest of them do. We get half from our sire, and the other half of the pairs are an extension of our own DNA.”
Bella’s eyes flashed with anger, but she was able to gain control of herself again. “So what does that make me to him?”
“For all intents and purposes, I’m still your uncle-in-law,” Liam answered. “You and I share only two chromosomes out of twenty-five. That doesn’t count for much. Anyway, we need to get you out into the woods and teach you how to hunt, and most importantly, how to control yourself.”
“But I already know how to control myself.”
Liam chuckled. “Emotionally, yes, but you need to learn your own strength, too. You need to learn how to act human. I’m sure you haven’t noticed, but you’ve been doing everything at super-speed.”
“Oh.” She frowned. “Alright.”
“I’ll go make sure Jacob clears out with Renesmee,” Carlisle offered, and he went up to the living room.
“Renesmee?” Bella repeated, her hand moving to her flat belly. “It was a girl?”
“Yes, a beautiful little girl,” Edward answered.
“So why can’t I see her now?” Bella demanded.
“Because she’s half human,” Edward reminded her. “You really should hunt first.”
Bella didn’t argue too much because she was anxious to test out her new abilities. She followed her escorts up the stairs into an empty living room, paying careful attention to each movement. Her nose wrinkled at the scent of werewolf. “Jacob?”
“You’ll get used to it,” Edward laughed, flashing a cheeky smile at his glaring uncle.
They moved out into the open and let Bella take in everything. Her eyes were wide with amazement, and it was just as fun for Liam and Edward to watch her. She soon regained her senses and smiled at Edward. “Lead the way.”
Edward smirked. “Let’s see if you can keep up with me.”
Of course they already knew she would be faster and stronger than either of them. She had no trouble keeping pace with Edward; Liam stayed close behind to make sure she didn’t wander off by herself. She came to a dead stop at the river, staring at it like it was an impossible obstacle.
“There’s nothing to it,” Edward tried to reassure her. “Just watch me.” He backed up to get a running start, then effortlessly leapt over the river, landing on the opposite bank with a barely audible thud.
“Go on.” Liam nudged her. “You’re not your old clumsy self anymore.”
Bella didn’t seem very confident, but she mirrored Edward’s actions, jumping a little too far and landing in the trees. When Liam and Edward caught up with her she seemed like she was in shock. “You’re graceful now,” Edward teased her.
Bella seemed rather pleased with herself. The small group took off up north, near the Canadian border. They found a herd of elk for Bella’s first hunt. “What do I do?” she asked.
“Follow your instincts,” Edward instructed.
They watched as she stalked the animals, keeping low to the ground and moving silently. But she charged too soon and scared off the herd. It took a few more tries before she finally succeeded, leaping onto an elk and wrestling the struggling beast to the ground with little effort.
Liam and Edward each took an elk for themselves. Bella took one look at them and frowned when she saw that they didn’t have a single hair out of place, and she was covered in blood, her clothes filthy and torn. “How do you do that?” she asked. “I mean, not get all dirty.”
“It takes practice.” Edward flashed her a smile. “You’ll get the hang of it. How do you feel?”
“Still thirsty.”
“Well, then, we’ll just have to remedy that, won’t we? Only this time, you have to find your own prey.”
Liam and Edward followed behind Bella as she tried to use her new senses to track down another animal. It didn’t take her long before she found a mountain lion looking for a meal of its own. Edward wasn’t sure she was up for such a challenge, but before he could open his mouth to object, she sprang into action. The large feline put up quite a struggle, but it was over quickly.
Bella was beaming as she stood, her clothes now in tatters and hanging off her body. “This’ll make for an interesting story,” Liam chuckled.
She tried to cover herself up, but it was no use. The mountain lion had completely shredded the fabric in the struggle. Edward couldn’t help but laugh. “Don’t worry. I don’t mind, and you’re not Liam’s type.”
“Yes, something’s missing,” the blond vampire nodded.
Bella gave up and shrugged. “I’m sure Alice will have something for me when we get back. And then I want to see Renesmee.”
Edward wasn’t sure it was a good idea to let Bella near their daughter so soon, but he kept his concerns to himself and took off his shirt, handing it to her. “You should probably cover up.”
“Right.” Bella nodded and slipped into the shirt. She had no trouble finding her way home, and didn’t even slow down when they reached the river this time. She didn’t stop until they reached the yard and Jacob came out to greet them.
“What are you doing?” Liam hissed at his mate.
“I wanted to see how she would react to me,” Jacob answered as he folded his arms. “I haven’t suddenly turned to glass. But if you like, you can think of this as me trusting your strength and reflexes.”
Liam grumbled under his breath but didn’t argue any further. He stood tensed, with his gaze fixed on Bella.
“Hiya, Bells,” Jacob said as he inched toward her. “Do you even still remember me?”
“Sort of,” Bella answered. “But I don’t remember you being so hot. I can feel it from here.”
Jacob chuckled softly. He was watching her closely, too, but didn’t seem to fear her at all. “You don’t look as different as I expected.”
“And just what did you expect?” she snapped at him.
Jacob shrugged. “I don’t know…” He stopped only a few inches from her, which seemed to make Liam nervous. “Do I smell tasty now?”
Bella shook her head. “You smell like a wet dog, only worse. Your smell was all over the living room.”
“I guess that means you’re not going to want me to sit with you anymore.” Jacob frowned. “But at least you’re still mostly you.”
Bella peered past him into the house, preoccupied with the sounds coming from inside. “Can I see Renesmee now?”
“A one-track mind: check,” Liam commented as he grabbed Jacob’s arm and pulled him aside. “I think we’re going to be okay.”
Jacob glanced at Liam curiously but didn’t say anything. They followed Bella back inside, where the rest of the family waited. All eyes were on her; Jasper and Emmett also stood ready to intervene if things went badly. Bella noticed this and didn’t seem at all happy about it. “Do you really think I’m going to hurt her?”
“Do you really want to risk it?” Edward asked.
“I guess not,” Bella grumbled, and she advanced toward Rosalie, who was holding the baby girl.
Renesmee had continued her rapid growth and definitely didn’t look like she was only a day old. She also seemed to recognize her mother, and reached toward Bella with her small arms. “It’s all right, Rosalie.” Carlisle motioned for the blonde to hand over the baby. She did so hesitantly, staying close.
Bella stared down at her daughter, her expression unreadable. The others could only look at Jasper and Liam. “She’s so big.” Bella smiled.
“And she’s beautiful, just like you,” Edward said from right behind his wife. “I must admit, I wasn’t sure about going through with this at first, but I’m kind of glad you insisted.”
Liam reached for Jacob’s hand and gave it a light squeeze. “She’s even starting to grow on me, too,” Jacob admitted. He was still scared out of his mind, but seeing Bella with her daughter eased his fears a little. He wanted to hold his baby like Bella was holding Renesmee.
