“I’m scared, Christian,” Ana whispered to me through glossy blue eyes.
“You’re okay, baby, you’re okay.” I stroked her hair and held her hand. I cocked my head to one side, then the other, cracking my neck. All of the fucking lights in this operating room were beating down on me. I was feeling dizzy and out of it, but had to keep it together for my wife. Ana winced and tightened her grip on my hand as the doctor made a cut. “Shh, shh, it’s almost over. Phoebe’s coming.” One stray tear ran down Ana’s cheek. Christ. Teddy had been at my parents’ house since last night. They would be down to meet the baby in just a couple of hours. Kate and Elliot had a babysitter lined up to watch Ava so that they could come, too, and my sister was already in the waiting room, thrilled to be the first to meet our little girl. Everything was planned, scheduled, in order, just the way I liked it, but here was my Ana, being cut open on a table. I would not be able to breathe until I knew both my girls were okay. “Okay, Ana, you’re going to feel a lot of pressure.” “Okay,” Ana squeaked out a response. We locked eyes, and I watched Ana wince and groan, biting her lip. “You’re so strong, Ana. So strong. So beautiful,” I murmured, doing anything I could think of to distract her from her pain. “Okay, it’s baby time!” Dr. Greene called from over the blue drape. “Get your camera ready, Daddy!” Fuck, the camera. I grabbed it and got ready. Ana gasped, closing her eyes tight, as Dr. Greene pulled the baby out. “It’s a… girl!” She held the screaming baby up high over the drape, and I snapped as many pictures as I could. Ana sobbed next to me. I leaned down, kissing away my wife’s tears, pressing my lips to hers. “She’s here. Thank you, Ana. Thank you, beautiful. You did so amazing. You’re so strong. I love you, baby. I love you so much.” “Go see her, baby.” A nurse was wiping the baby off as I went over. I snapped pictures of her being weighed, measured, pricked, and prodded. Finally, she was bundled up and handed over to me. “Congratulations, Mr. Grey.” I barely heard the nurse’s words as my little girl was placed in my arms for the first time. I gasped as I held her. I tried to take everything in. She had a few wisps of blood-stained copper hair, just like her brother, but she didn’t really look like Teddy. I traced her little nose, kissed her sweet baby cheeks. I shuddered when I saw her sweet lips. My Ana’s perfect lips, the plump bottom one in a little pout. God. “Christian,” I heard Ana whisper my name. I looked up and saw my wife still on the table. I brought the baby over to her. I leaned down to let Ana take our daughter in, and she kissed her cheek. Ana reached a hand out to wipe my own cheek, and I realized I had silent tears running down my face. “She has your lips, Ana.” My beautiful wife smiled. “I think you’re right.” “This is… She’s…” I tried to find any words, but my daughter had left me completely speechless. “Perfect?” Ana asked. “Perfect doesn’t do any member of my family justice,” I replied, kissing Ana again. Finally they got Ana closed up, and we were led to recovery. Ana wasn’t able to hold Phoebe herself until her anesthesia wore off, so I sat next to her so we could both gaze down at our daughter. I traced every wrinkle of my little girl’s hands and feet. I could not believe this beautiful baby was mine. I had a daughter. This was my daughter. It was unfathomable. Phoebe wrapped her tiny delicate hand around my finger, and I stopped breathing. Just last night I had talked to this little person, feeling her move inside my wife, and now she was here, she was in my arms. She was so little. Was Teddy ever this little? “You make absolutely beautiful babies, Anastasia Grey.” “If I remember correctly, you helped, Christian Grey.” “She’s all you. She looks like you. My gorgeous girls.” Ana got the okay from the nurse to hold Phoebe. I transferred her to my wife’s arms, and fresh tears immediately ran down her cheek as she held her daughter for the first time. “Hi, Phoebe Rose. It’s Mommy.” Phoebe scrunched her little nose and pouted her bottom lip. “Oh, Christian.” Ana looked up at me with tear-stained eyes. “Baby, she’s amazing.” “I know. You’re amazing.” “I love you so much, baby.” We kissed deeply, taking each other in, thanking each other for making this amazing little person. “I couldn’t picture her looking like anything but Teddy. But she doesn’t. She looks like…” “Like Phoebe Rose Grey.” “Like Phoebe Rose Grey. She’s so beautiful.” A nurse came in to let us know we would be moved to our room now and could have visitors. Ana and Phoebe got settled in the new room, and I went out to find Mia and call the family. “Hi, big brother!” Mia popped up from her seat when she saw me, wrapping her arms around my waist. “She’s here. Everything went great. She’s beautiful.” “Phoebe Rose?” “Phoebe Rose.” “Oh, I can’t wait to meet her!” “You call Kate, I’ll call Mom, and then we’ll go in.” Mia pulled out her phone and began dialing. I did the same. “Christian? Did she have the baby?” “She did. They’re both doing great. Phoebe’s beautiful, Mom.” “Oh, I can’t wait to meet her.” “How’s Teddy?” “Oh, he’s great. Such a good boy.” “You’ll bring him now?” “We’ll be there soon!” “Okay, great. Thanks, Mom.” I hung up, and Mia was already off the phone. “Kate and Elliot are heading out now!” “Okay, let’s go.” I led Mia back to Ana’s room. Ana was in bed holding the baby. “Oh my god!” Mia squealed. “Oh, wow, she’s beautiful. I mean, usually newborns are all… you know. But she’s gorgeous, you guys!” “Thanks.” Ana smiled. “You want to hold her?” “Of course!” Mia settled down into a chair, and I transferred my daughter into her arms. “Christian, take a picture,” Ana told me, and I found the camera again. “Hi, Phoebe. I’m your Aunt Mia,” she cooed. “I’m the fun aunt,” she whispered and winked up at us. Ana and I laughed. “You’re so cute!” Mia squealed, looking down at her niece. “Who do you guys think she looks like?” “Well, she has Ana’s mouth.” “And Christian’s hair.” “And I guess the verdict’s still out on her eyes.” Mia handed me back my daughter. “I’ll go look for Mom and everyone.” I cradled my baby girl, going to sit on Ana’s bed with her. “How do you feel, baby?” “I’m okay. They have me on pain medication. It’ll probably hurt more tomorrow if I remember right from having Teddy.” I kissed her forehead. “You’re incredible. Thank you so much for making me a daddy again.” Ana leaned her head on my shoulder. “I don’t have any words for this feeling. I just love her to death. I didn’t know I could love anyone else the way I loved you and Teddy, but instantly I just can’t even imagine my life without her.” “I know what you mean. No words.” I heard a commotion in the hallway, and looked up to see everyone heading for our door. I transferred the baby to Ana and went out to meet my family. “Hi, everyone. Hi, Teddy bear!” I scooped up my boy in my arms. He felt so big compared to holding Phoebe. “Listen, Teddy, guess what? You’re a big brother! Mommy had a baby. Baby Phoebe is here!” “Baby?” Ted’s big gray eyes questioned me. “Yes, baby is here. You’re a big brother! I’m going to take him in first, and then I’ll come back for you guys if that’s okay.” I knew my mom was dying to see the baby, but everyone nodded and headed for the waiting room. I carried Teddy in, watching Ana’s eyes light up when she saw him. “Hi, Teddy bear!” He wiggled in my arms to get down, but I held him tight. “Listen, Teddy, we’re going to be very gentle with Mommy and Phoebe, okay? Very gentle.” I sat on the bed with my son on my lap. Ana kissed his copper locks. “You want to say hi to Baby Phoebe, my sweet boy?” “Mama!” Teddy held out his arms to be held by her, completely ignoring the bundle on her lap. “Mommy’s holding your sister right now, so I’m going to hold you, Ted, okay? Want to see the baby?” Ana brushed back the blanket to uncover Phoebe’s face a bit more. “Baby!” Teddy exclaimed. We laughed. “Yes, Ted, that’s Baby Phoebe! That’s your sister.” “You want to hold the baby, Teddy?” I placed Teddy on the bed next to her, and Ana shifted the baby to his lap, still keeping both hands on her herself. “Get the camera, Christian,” she whispered. I would be hearing that a lot today, I guessed. I grabbed the camera and took a bunch of shots of Teddy gazing down at Phoebe in his lap, Ana looking on happily. Then I got the million dollar shot, as Teddy leaned down to gently kiss Phoebe’s forehead. “Oh, what a sweet boy!” Ana squealed, kissing him. “What a good big brother.” I came back over and put my hand on Ted’s head. “Okay, I think it’s cruel to keep your family waiting any longer.” Ana smiled. “Ted, want to come help me get Grandma and Grandpa and everyone?” Ted nodded, lifting his arms up for me. We went out and got everyone, and they all filed into the room, my mom reaching the bed first. “Oh, Ana, she’s beautiful.” My mom kissed Ana’s cheek. Ana transferred Phoebe to her, and my mom’s eyes welled up with tears. I knew she loved Elliot just as much as she loved me, but I think she always knew he would have a family one day. With me, she had worried about me for so many years, and seeing me get everything I could ever dream of had to be a very fulfilling moment for her. I went to stand next to her, putting an arm around her. “Congratulations, Christian. I could not be happier for you.” “Thank you, Mom.” My dad came over, peeking in at his granddaughter. “Very sweet little girl. Congratulations.” My mom passed the baby to Kate next. “Hello, pretty girl,” she cooed. “I have a best friend waiting for you at home.” Elliot smiled hearing her mention their daughter. “Wow, Steele. Two kids. Two really cute kids at that.” She passed the baby to her husband and went to hug her friend. Elliot looked so goofy holding my tiny daughter in his big bear arms. “Hey Phoebs. It’s Uncle Elliot.” Ana yawned from her bed, and I glanced over at her, seeing that she was fading a bit. “Alright, everyone, I think my wife needs her rest. Thank you guys for coming.” Ana and I said goodbye to Teddy. My parents would bring him back tomorrow. They all shouted their congrats again as they walked out of the room. Finally, it was peaceful again, just the three of us. A nurse came to take Phoebe to the nursery, and I tucked Ana in and insisted she sleep. I took a seat next to her, stroking her IV-free hand. “Sleep, baby girl.” “I thought I wasn’t your baby girl any more. You know, knew baby girl in town and all that,” Ana teased. “You will always be my sweet baby girl, and I love you with all my heart, Anastasia Grey.” “I love you, baby.” Ana drifted off to sleep, and I dreamt of my beautiful family of four laying in our meadow. Please review! Would love to hear your thoughts on this scene. Hope I did it justice! :)
