Amy
Anthony and I had a relationship that was something special. It couldn’t really be called a “relationship,” but it couldn’t be called platonic either. We slept in the bed together every night. I thought maybe he was going to kiss me the other night. We always talked for a while before falling asleep. Sometimes he’d tell me the stories about the Quileute, some of which I was finding out were true. Sometimes we’d talk about Daisy, places in the world we’d like to see, sometimes about God or about candy. I don’t remember what the topic was that night, but he was cupping my face with his hand. Whatever it was that we had been talking about, we stopped. He lightly stroked my face with his fingertips from my temple to my jaw. I’d never really noticed that I don’t look people in the eye very much until Anthony mentioned it. I don’t know why, I guess it’s just uncomfortable for me. I had no problem at all with it right then however. His green eyes were so perfectly clear.
I like green. It reminds me of spring, that’s my favorite time of year because everything is coming alive again.
He kept it up even after I closed my eyes. I was awake for a while, just lying there enjoying it, but eventually I fell asleep. I’d never been touched like that before. I’ve had sex more times than I care to remember, but that was the most intimate experience of my life.
If this had been a hypothetical situation, it would make sense for somebody in my position to be afraid to get romantically involved with the person providing food and shelter. If it went badly, there was a risk of loosing everything. Oddly, I wasn’t worried about it.
Now all I had to do was wait for him to make a move. He didn’t seem to have much experience dating. He’d never mentioned any old girlfriends. Maybe there weren’t any. Even though he was only eighteen, that seemed impossible! He was too sweet for words, intelligent, family oriented, and even financially stable.
I had just about died of curiosity wondering how his family had all of this money, not to mention at least one extra house that was fully furnished. I felt like it might be impolite to ask.
One theory was that they were smugglers of some kind. Jewels, drugs, illegal immigrants? A.J. and his siblings sure didn’t seem like the type. The mystery was solved when he told me they made their money through the stock market. When he asked me if I’d like to give it a try, I jumped at the chance to have my own funds. Then I got a little concerned that I might loose money. Anthony suggested that I start small, and that seemed reasonable so I decided to go for it.
He told me I should call his Aunt Alice, that she was the real expert. I was nervous about randomly calling somebody I’d never met before, even though he assured me she wouldn’t mind, and that she was super sweet. He did warn me that it would be hard to get her off the phone once she got to talking. Wow, was he right on both counts. She sounded so kind, and she was also pretty hyper. She seemed like she’d just drank an entire coffee shop out of business.
First, she gave me a crash course on investing. Once I had the basics down, she asked if I wanted to pick my own stocks, or if I’d like her to do it. Since she was the one who knew what she was doing, I said I’d feel more comfortable if she chose them, at least at first. I sat in front of Anthony’s laptop and Alice showed me how to set up my stuff on the web site she recommended. Sooner than I thought, I was up and running. I gave her permission to get on the site and check on my account, and make any changes she thought were needed. Now I just had to wait and see what the $23.79 we’d found in the couch would do. Who has a crumpled up twenty dollar bill in their couch?! That was a stroke of luck for sure.
Once we were done with all that, Alice started telling me about how she used to live in the first house along the driveway. She told me a bunch of cute stories about Anthony from when he was little, and that he looked just like his dad.
She asked what I’d thought of Swan’s play. I’d taken Daisy out to Mom’s to spend the day with her so that Anthony and I could go see it. Even though I don’t like crowds, I felt a lot better with Anthony there with me. The show was great, Swan really had a gift. I would love to be able to sing like that.
We talked about clothes, but when she went off about this designer and that one, she might as well have been speaking Swahili. Personally, I’m more of a clearance rack at Target kind of girl. She wanted to take me shopping the next time she came to visit. She seemed to have really expensive tastes, I didn’t think I’d be able to afford the kind of stores she liked. When she told me I shouldn’t be so sure, I could hear the grin in her voice.
When I checked my account a week later, I was elated to see that the couch money had already turned into hundreds of dollars! I looked over the companies I’d invested in, I couldn’t really remember the ones that were there before, but it looked like she did make a few changes. I could tell that every time I made a few dollars, she would reinvest it and it had just kept right on growing. It was hard not to run out and start spending. It seemed unlikely that I’d do this well all the time, so I resolved to put half of everything I made into a college fund for Daisy.
Since I didn’t have anywhere to put my money, when my little flower was at school one day Anthony took me to open my very first bank account. It wouldn’t have been a big deal to most people, but I was positively over the moon.
It was the same bank that Anthony used. You could tell he had a good bit of green in there by the way the tellers were just about ready to bend over and kiss his ass. He had the lady link my account to his. That way, if I ever accidently over drafted, they would pull some money from his account to cover it. It was sorta kinda couple like, so it was almost romantic. The night after we went to the bank, we had a mini movie marathon, Daisy’s choice. Two was about all she could sit through. And to think, before we came here a couple of months ago, I never would have considered a man being glad to watch a My Little Pony double feature a turn on.
Those two were not best buddies yet, but she had warmed to Anthony faster than I thought she would. There were still times when she was a little frightened of him though. Even something as innocent as Anthony laughing a little too loud would have her running to hide. I’d tried to explain to her as best I could that Anthony was not Daddy. There were some things she was just too young to understand right now. When she got older, I’d have some explaining to do, and a lot of apologizing. I wasn’t sure how I’d ever forgive myself for not getting her out of there sooner. I’d probably always carry that guilt with me.
Randy still called or texted me. I had sixteen voice mails I had never listened to. He’d lay off for a few days, and then start right up again. He could beg me to believe him that hurting Daisy had been an accident all he wanted. I wasn’t falling for his lies again. Not that everything was perfect now, but it was awful close. Now that I knew how happy we could be, there wasn’t a snowball’s chance in Hell of us going back there. Daisy and I were safe, and didn’t have to be in fear anymore.
Most of the time I just left my phone off. I was thinking about changing my number. When I saw his name pop up on my screen, it took me right back there. Back to the day when I realized that asshole had intentionally left only the clothes that he knew I was too fat to wear anymore. It took me back to days that were a lot worse than that, too.
I mostly tried not to think about him. Anthony made it easy, he’d certainly given me a lot to ponder.
“So, if the wolves are real, and the reason for their existence is to protect the tribe from vampires, does that mean...”
He smiled at me from the edge of his pillow. Our hands were linked in the small space that was left between us on the classy looking black bed sheets.
“Yeah?” he encouraged me.
“Then does that mean...vampires are real too?”
“Maybe.” His smile grew a little wider, and he rubbed the back of my hand with his thumb.
I gasped. “Are there any around here, or did the wolves kill them?”
“There are. They would if the vampires were a threat to any humans, but it’s not exactly like that all of the time.”
He told me about a group of vampires that were not like the rest. They fed off the blood of animals instead of humans. This enabled them to blend in, and live among them. One of them fell in love with, and married a human. No one thought it was possible for them to conceive a child together, but they did. The human nearly died giving birth to this half vampire child, but they turned the mom into a vampire too, in order to save her life.
They both survived, and the child grew so fast that she was an adult by the time she was seven years old. The alpha of the wolf pack fell in love with her. Then the two groups became allies instead of enemies. The half vampire child and the alpha married and had a family of their own.
A few nights later, while lying on his back looking up at the ceiling, he told me more about the family. Feeling bold, I reached over and placed my hand on his smooth chest. Anthony’s body was so perfectly sculpted, it was unreal. He seemed to like me touching him, seeing as he stumbled through the entire next sentence as he spoke.
Once he recovered, he told me two of the alpha and the half vampire’s kids “went wolf” around puberty. All were part vampire though, some more than others.
“Talk about a blended family!” I said. “How many kids did they have?”
He hesitated before he answered.
“Five.”
“Wow, what a troupe that must have been. What happened to them?” I wanted to hear the rest of the story.
“They are all still around, they are immortal,” he explained.
“Are they around here?” I asked.
“Yup. The kids are older teenagers and young adults by now. The oldest boy is a wolf, one of the girls is a wolf, one of the other girls is going to marry another wolf from the pack. The youngest boy and the oldest girl have the most vampire in them.”
“So the one girl is engaged?”
“Not yet.”
“Why do you say not yet?” I said, wondering what an engagement party for a wolf and a vampire-human hybrid would be like.
He rolled over to face me, and opened his arms. I wiggled closer and he wound them around me, resting his face on my shoulder. I put a hand on his back, enjoying his warmth. He was always so warm. I was also secretly hoping he was checking out my boobs.
“Everyone knows they will get married eventually. It’s kind of a long story that I think I’ll save for another night, but to put it simply, they are meant for each other. Sometimes it happens to the wolves, it’s kind of a destiny thing.”
“Sounds romantic,” I replied.
“Yeah, I guess it is,” he agreed, looking up at me.
He seemed to know a fair amount about this family, more than he knew about any of the other specific vampires of wolves he’d mentioned.
“Do you know these people?”
Am I supposed to call them people?
It took him so long to answer, that I almost asked again.
“Yeah,” he finally said.
“No way! Let’s have them over for dinner or something!”
I heard, and also felt him chuckle.
“We could, if you really want to. Aren’t you scared?”
I thought about it, to make sure my answer would be an honest one. I really did find all of this stuff fascinating. I always loved to read and watch movies about supernatural stuff. Now I got to know that some of it was real, I got to be in on the huge secret. All of this was only scary in the way that a roller coaster is. You might not know exactly what it’s going to be like, just that you are probably in for a wild ride!
“Nope,” I eventually responded.
He lifted his head from my shoulder and smiled at me.
“I shouldn’t be surprised. Do you really want to invite them over?”
“Sure! If you think they’ll come.”
“They will,” he assured me.
What the heck does one serve to a group like this? Lasagna with a side of lamb blood? Spaghetti with garlic bread, hold the garlic?
“Do they eat actual food?”
“Uh huh. They all eat some. The more vampire in them, the more they tend to like red meat. The wolves will eat anything though, there will be two of them so...no, actually there will be three. Those three will be easy to feed.”
“Holy crap, this will be amazing. I can’t wait to see what they look like,” I said.
“They look pretty normal. You’d probably never guess, if you didn’t know already.”
I fell asleep wondering what they looked like. Would I really not be able to tell?
A/N: On FB last week, for a teaser I posted a bit from the last chapter on there last week, including A&A going to the bank. I asked everybody where they thought Amy got her money. Gotta give a shout out to Nicki, the only one who guessed that Alice helped Amy with investing. You are awesome! Donna, you had a great answer too! In case you guys are wondering if A.J. had something to do with an above average amount of cash being found in the couch cushions...does a wolf run through the woods? lol
Next chapter, coming right up!
