Sometime later, they all found themselves outside with the tribe as different members played music, sang, and danced. Lazlo had said that Erik and Christine were guests, and no one questioned him.
Erik sat beside Jovanka with Elaine in his arms as he watched Christine dance with the gypsy women. She had been afraid to go at first, but he had encouraged her. She was lovely as she moved, her paler limbs standing out in contrast to the darker arms and legs of the gypsies around her.
“She’s beautiful. The two of you are going to have a very happy life together, Erik,” Jovanka told him.
“I hope so…”
“You love each other. You’re finally going to have the companion that you deserve,” she continued.
As she said these words, she couldn’t help noticing that he looked troubled. “Is something wrong, Erik?”
He held his daughter close to him and kissed her soft brown curls that were so like her mother’s. “I worry,” he began.
“What is it? What is not letting your mind rest? Perhaps I can help you.”
He looked at her trustingly. “My daughter is such a beautiful child, but I can’t help wondering…what if we have more children? What if Elaine was just luck and the next baby…” His hand touched the mask.
Moved with understanding and compassion, Jovanka put a hand on his arm. “You should not worry. I doubt that your fear would come to pass.”
“I wish I knew for certain,” he said, sadness in his eyes. “Is there any way that you would be able to tell me? Once you told my fortune and it came about just as you said.”
“It is a rather complex question, but…you could try asking Magdalena. As you know from Christine’s experience, my daughter is extremely gifted. Her abilities surpass mine.”
“Would you go with me?”
“Yes, and it shouldn’t take us long.”
They walked together over to where Magdalena stood beside her father.
“Mourishay, could you come with Erik and me for a moment? You’ll need your cards,” Jovanka said to her daughter.
The girl nodded, and they began walking to the tent.
“Do you need help with something, Erik?” Magdalena asked.
“Yes, there is a question that I need to know the answer to if you are able to reveal it to me.”
“I’ll do my best.”
They reached the tent and went inside.
“Sit down, Erik,” Jovanka said. “I can hold your daughter.”
He handed Elaine to her and she moved to stand with the baby on the other side of the tent. Erik took a seat at the table. Magdalena joined him, her cards in hand.
“What is it that you would like to know?”
“Can you tell me if any future children that Christine and I might have will share my affliction?” His voice was almost trembling.
“Let’s see if I can. Here, shuffle these,” she said, placing the deck in his hand.
Once he’d handed them back and she spread them out, she studied them silently for a moment. Erik grew nervous, shifting in his seat.
“You are meant to have other children,” Magdalena began with a reassuring smile. “Whatever it is that caused you to be marked since birth, it does not appear to repeat itself.”
“Are you certain?”
She took his hand and turned it palm up, tracing the lines and then briefly closing her eyes in concentration. “Yes, I am quite sure that you have nothing to worry about, Erik. Do not be afraid of having more children. They will be fine.”
He let out an audible sigh of relief. “That is what I needed to know. Thank you.”
“Oh, and that piece of music you’ve been working on. You know the one, you really should finish it.”
He raised his eyebrows, but then smiled and nodded. “I’ll be sure to.”
They all headed back to the celebration, Erik wearing a look of relaxation and contentment.
“There you are!” Christine called and hurried over to him. “I was just looking for you.”
“Oh, I was…”
Christine dismissed the explanation with a wave of her hand and an understanding smile. “It doesn’t matter. You had catching up to do. I was just looking for you to tell you that one of the men has a violin. Won’t you play something?”
He hesitated a second.
“Oh yes, Erik, I would love to hear you,” Jovanka said.
He nodded and Christine took Elaine. “All right, I will. I remember some of the songs I used to hear in the camp from years ago.”
When Erik returned and began to play, everyone looked on in amazement.
“Isn’t he beautiful?” Christine whispered to Jovanka.
“Oh yes, I’ve always thought so,” came the kind and knowing reply.
“You will have to come to our wedding, you and your family,” Christine added. “We’ll pick a date and let you know soon.”
“Thank you for the invitation. I will be certain that we are there. I had always had the hope that the day would come when Erik would be joined with the wife he was meant to have, but I never thought I would be present to see it happen. Fate is such an odd thing…”
