Caitlin’s eyes fluttered opened looking towards the ceiling for several moments before shifting from left to right. Reaching up she covered her eyes discovering she had a frightful headache, and felt groggy like she had been sick with the flu. Slowly and carefully she sat up, trying to pull herself from sleep.
“ G’ mornin’ misses!” Said a loud and cheerful voice that seemed to come out of nowhere. Caitlin covered her ear closest to the noise and fell off the edge of the bed into a sitting position on the floor. Her eyes wide as if someone had just rang bells in her very skull. Smee moved closer, “Oh I’m sorry Misses, I didn’t mean to frighten ye. ‘ere, let me help ye.” Reaching down he helped her to her feet, supporting her weight so she wouldn’t fall again leading her towards the table. “That’s it, just put one foot in front of the other. The doc said the quickest way to get ye back onto yer feet, was to get ye up and movin’ about and some food and drink in ya.”
Her eyes shifted around the Cabin again. “Where is James?” She questioned as Smee sat her down in a chair and pushed it closer to the table where hot food was ready and waiting for her.
“He had to go ashore for a bit misses. He’ll be back soon. He had some things he wanted to get, and some things that had to be done.” Cat looked up at him for a few more moments trying to clear her thoughts.
“What happened? Why do I feel like I’ve been run over?” She questioned looking up at the first-mate her husband had left behind to tend to her. Cat closed her eyes for a second, putting her hand to the side of her head “The last thing I remember was . . . someone asking me what I was afraid of . . .” Smee moved a soda he’d mixed for her and handed it to her to drink. She began to sip at the strange liquid listening for her answers she wanted.
“Ye were havin’ some frightful dreams Misses, and ye woke up in a fit. So the Doc and the Captain gave ye somethin’ to quiet yer nerves to help ye sleep.” He took the empty glass from her as she looked at the food set out before her. “The doc also said ye would be feelin’ under the weather, and it’s because ye haven’t eaten or had anythin’ to drink since ye went to sleep.” Caitlin looked up at Smee.
“How long have I been asleep?” She asked softly.
“Four days misses.” That was a shock in itself. Her eyes shifted back down to the table as she took a moment to process that. Smee poured her a glass of water and handed it to her. “Come on now, do as the doc said and you’ll feel right as rain in no time.” Cat nodded and took the glass drinking the water before she slowly began to eat. Four days? She had really been asleep four days without a dream or stirring once? She must have been tired. How else could four days go by without her knowing or realizing it? Drinking another glass of water, she sighed wishing James had been there when she awoke.
James was hard at work, having had more time to plan and scheme then he had in all the time it had been since his return to Neverland. It had been quite a load off his mind with Caitlin asleep and safe for the first two days, but he had started to miss her on the third day. The fourth day he had begun to haunt her bedside watching her sleep. It got to the point where he couldn’t stop himself from reaching out shaking her every now and then trying to speed her return to the waking world. Yet she continued to sleep in her unnatural state, frustrating him to no end. Finally he decided that he had things to do elsewhere and needed to get off the Jolly Rodger for a while, instead of just standing around poking at Caitlin like some young child trying to roust a dead body with a stick.
He took a work crew ashore to oversee the pirate keep being restocked, usually it was something he sent Smee to do but he wanted to get off the ship and would not leave Caitlin with anyone besides himself or his first mate. The doctor would have been another choice if Hook’s paranoia and jealousy had not ruled him out completely. Now the doctor was not permitted to see Caitlin alone any more, James had to be there or at the very least and rare occasion, Smee.
There were several things that weren’t just lying around in Neverland waiting to be picked up and made into food. So a garden of sorts had been planted by the crew and was harvested regularly. You would think that the devastating winters they suffered through each time Pan left this world and skipped over into the next would make it impossible to grow anything. However one of the wonders of Neverland was the ability for things such as plants to grow and reproduce quite quickly, in contrast to the living things such as humans, fairies, mermaids who never aged a day. Seeds were sewn at first light in the morning, and the entire crop could be harvested in the afternoon around 3 or 4, leaving plenty of time for the vegetables and other fruits to be stored properly for use. Because of the cruel winters, they kept their onshore keep filled and never let it get more then half empty taking full advantage of the spring days when they were available.
Of course not wanting to sully his hands, James did none of the work and merely supervised. His eyes on the pirates but his thoughts lay somewhere else. Presents were something that women seemed to adore, and because Caitlin was not one who always expected a gift, a look of surprise and joy seemed to light up her features when she was given one. It was almost infectious the way her happiness seemed to spread to him knowing he was the one who had caused it. Yes it was decided, a gift she would have, but what? What could he possibly give her that would keep and would compliment her grace and beauty? Hook began to rack his brain trying to remember what sorts of trifles that women raved about back before he and his crew were trapped in this ghastly place.
Dipping back into his memories that were as locked and bound tightly as Caitlin’s were, he could only pull up a few bits and pieces. None of which aided him in his plight. “Strange, you would think that one would remember something as simple as the gifts one would give to . . .” Suddenly he stopped, as a memory sparked that was perhaps the answer he had been searching for. He stood quickly and disappeared into another part of the pirates on land keep looking for a few boxes and chests that were hidden away with the other material goods that did nothing for them but take up space in the holds of the Jolly Rodger.
Back in his cabin, Caitlin had gotten Smee to sit down and eat with her by promising not to tell the Captain that he did so. Already she was feeling better, having rested for so long and now regaining her strength. Both sat eating quite socially and laughing as Smee told her tales about the Captain having been the First Mate aboard the Jolly Rodger for so very long. “I can’t say it’s been all bad having ye aboard misses, before you came along I was the one who took care of the Capt’n every day by helpin’ him dress and makin’ sure all was in order. He ain’t such a bad guy once ye get to know him, as long as ye don’t question him and follow his orders that is.” Caitlin took another bite of food and nodded before washing it down with some more water.
“Yes, I’ve been learning that little by little every since I came here. He does seem like two completely different people sometimes, and I could almost swear that a third one appears every now and then, and then there is one more . . . that I have not seen in full, nor do I ever wish to.” She looked up at Smee for a moment and shook her head finding her smile once more, “But he is quite the man isn’t he. Very brave, courageous and a strong leader.” Taking a breath she looked away picking up her glass once more, “He is. . .a very fine man.” Pausing a moment lost deep in her thoughts she finished her glass of water. Smee could see she was turning things over in her mind, perhaps still struggling with weather or not she truly loved him or was just going through the motions of being a wife. Either way, it seemed like the perfect opportunity for a subject change. He filled her glass once more with water, as the doctor had said that she needed to drink all she could.
“Now Misses, the cook whipped up somethin’ special for ye.” Smee said standing taking her plate away, before coming back with a covered one. “The Capt’n says ye have a hard to satisfy sweet tooth and the cook seems to have taken it as a challenge.” Putting the plate down before her he pulled the cover off. Caitlin’s eyes went wide seeing cake that had chocolate filling, chocolate icing, and what looked like fudge and whipped cream topping it and surrounding it, with a few strawberries for decoration. Cat could hardly believe her eyes and her jaw dropped slightly in pure and utter shock. She looked up at Smee, “For. . . me?” She whispered in disbelief.
He burst into laughter, “Aye, it’s for ye misses. Now ye can eat all ye want and not worry about gaining a pound. This is Neverland ye know.” He said giving her a fork, before retaking his seat next to her. She was still staring at the mount of chocolate that was set before her, as she did love chocolate there was no doubt. How on earth did they know? James must have told them, but how did he know? She looked at Smee and pushed the plate towards him, handing him a fork as well.
“You have to help me eat it Smee, I couldn’t eat all of this by myself. There is more then enough here for to.” He chuckled taking the fork as he looked at her a moment shaking his head.
“Alright, if that is what ye wish.” As they began eating Caitlin looked up at her husbands first mate.
“Smee, you seem so different from the rest of the crew. You actually seem, cheerful and passive. Does Jam . . . . I mean Captain Hook treat you well?” She questioned looking at him, never really seeing James interacting with his crew. Whenever she was about his attention seemed to be solely on her except for issuing orders. “I know he is a good leader, otherwise he would not be the Captain of this ship.” Smee couldn’t help but laugh as he looked up at her.
“Aye he would be anyway Misses. A pirate ship this is, and its crew motley, every last one a thief, murderer and blackmailer. But the Capt’n owns it, right down to the last rope. There was a time when he was very wealthy, and part of the upper class of England.” Caitlin listened intently wanting to know all she could about James, taking another bite of chocolate.
“What happened? What made him turn to piracy?” Smee sighed taking another bite as well shaking his head.
“Misses, each and every man aboard this ship lost memories when we were trapped on this here rock. The Capt’n worst of all, because of that boy that brought us ‘ere.” Caitlin didn’t quite understand what he meant by that and waited for an explanation. Smee sighed putting his fork down leaning closer to her, “See one day, we found this rouge boy pullin’ tricks on the crew. At first we all thought it was some sort of spirit from the great beyond. Ye know, like one of the sailors that went down on a ship in that part of the sea. Yet we discovered him when he was makin’ fun of the Capt’n by imitating his voice.”
Caitlin knew immediately who this young boy was Smee was talking about, for he had pulled the same trick on her by using James voice. “Yes, he has quite the talent for imitating Captain Hook doesn’t he.” Shaking her head as she took another bite of chocolate, something about that child always made her angry deep inside. All the horrible pain and suffering that he had caused James . . . Just made her want to take the boy over her knee and paddle him black and blue. Looking back up at Smee she waited for him to continue.
“Once the Capt’n realized that this boy was afoot, he started tryin’ to capture him. Somethin’ about pirates goin’ after this boy made Pan think it was great fun to tempt death. One day, all of us . . . every last man aboard the ship fell asleep, even the Capt’n. It was an unnatural thing, we learned later it was Fairy magic that brought it on. When we woke up, the first thing that came into view was that bloody island in this place called “Neverland”. Oh we tried to sail away from it, to be sure. But each time we put our backs to that blasted island, it wasn’t long before it came into view again and that’s when we knew we was trapped.”
Caitlin sighed putting down her fork. “How long after the crew was brought here until Captain Hook earn his name?” She inquired wanting to know how long it took this young juvenile delinquent to dismember James.
“Oh, a 3 or 4 years. They had battles just about every week, which always seemed to come out in a draw. Except for when Pan took the Capt’n’s hand.” Cat sat there in silence a few moments before closing her eyes wanting to throttle that little monster. What on earth gave him the right to do all of these things? She could not for the life of her understand it. Smee stood up and cleared the table, “Well, I’d say ye be lookin’ much better misses. The Capt’n will be glad to see yer awake when he gets back.” The little old man gave her a smile before turning and leaving her alone in the cabin to attend his other chores that Captain Hook had left him.
Cat stood up wrapping her arms about herself rubbing her arms, suddenly finding herself feeling very cold. All of these things were a game to this boy, everything. This world, the pirates, the other little boys running around, even the injuries they caused that would never heal. “Perhaps it’s true what they say. Little boys are made of slime, snails and puppy dog tails.”
Back on the island it was getting late and almost all of the food that the pirates had grown was locked away safely in their keep. James walked out and shouted at them, “WHAT ON EARTH IS TAKING YOU QUAILING, MOTLEY-MINDED MEASLE’S!!! Get those things packed up so we may return to the ship!” Under Hook’s arm he carried a box with him. It was the gift that he thought would be perfect for Caitlin to ease the trying times she had been suffering as of late. Just as before he grew anxious in wanting to present it to her and see that look in her eyes once more. He gave a loud sigh realizing that she might not even be awake yet, still trapped in her unnatural slumber.
His sudden loud shouting caused Aurora’s eyes to pop wide open, as she was tucked away in his vest pocket again. Climbing up she poked her little head out looking about, seeing they still hadn’t left the island. Stretching her little arms and back she gave a huge yawn still tired but always resting wonderfully when she was in her Captain’s pocket. She snuggled back down feeling warm and comfortable as a smile swept her face. James turned his eyes towards the sun seeing it was nearly dusk and it would most likely be dark before they returned to the Jolly Rodger. He gave a loud sigh and decided that his gift would have to wait until tomorrow. Hook planned to get Caitlin out of that cabin for a while; she had been cooped up in it for far to long.
Aurora’s eyes suddenly popped open again feeling something that made her eyes go wide and look around. It was a horrible sensation that made her little stomach turn almost inside out. All at once she burst out of Captain Hook’s pocket hovering in front of him a moment before flying in a circle about him trying to see who was getting nearer and who it was that was searching for her. James nearly fell back at the sudden explosion out of his pocket, “What the devil! . .” His eyes watched the small pixie as she frantically looked about trying to see if they were being approached or if whoever it was, was just searching randomly. “Miss Sun! What on earth has gotten into you!” He questioned. Her eyes went wide as she saw a glow flying through the air next to a young boy, and quickly she flew back into James pocket diving into her safe hiding place. James looked back into his pocket, “I want an explanation!”
However there wasn’t time for one as a shadow passed over their heads for a split second blocking out the sun. Captain Hook looked up seeing Pan and his small companion flying about, and quickly drew his sword, “IT’S PAN!!!” Turning around and shouting at his crew, “Get your weapons you slack-jawed morons and fire!!!” They all reached for their riffles and pistols and began firing into the air towards the pair of flying persons. Pan began to laugh dodging every bullet that came after him, then quickly drew his sword and started to fly for Hook. James smiled evilly, “Yes, come to me boy and I shall open your chest and see what color your noble heart.”
Peter was stopped in mid flight as Tinkerbell flew in front of him shaking her head and speaking quickly. Pan gave a sigh, “Your right Tink.” He move his head dodging yet another bullet before looking back at his fairy companion, “We have to find that fairy before she causes more evil. Hook will keep for another day.” Peter looked down at the Captain and grinned, putting away his sword before mockingly bowing then turned and flew away.
James eyes grew wide as a fire burned deep within at this. “Such . . .INNCOLANCE! COME BACK HERE YOU DISGUSTING LITTLE WORM!” He shouted waving his hook in Pan’s general direction as if trying to snatch him out of the air like a fisherman trying to snatch a fish from the waters below. Peter was out of sight in a matter of seconds, and James gave a yell kicking a rock as hard as he could sending it flying. He turned looking at his crew. Each and every man jumped recognizing that fire in his eye and not wanting to befall his anger. They quickly scattered and finished their work, loading what was going back to the ship with them and started off towards the boats.
Hook turned back looking towards the horizon where Pan disappeared. Never had that boy turned down the chance to pick a fight and engage in battle, where was he in such a hurry to get to? James shook his head putting his sword away before flicking his pocket. Aurora flew up rubbing her little bottom as usual, since it was the same as if another fairy had kicked her in the behind. “What was that little display about Miss Sun, do NOT make me ask you again.” He said through his teeth, loathing each and every time that boy flew away intact. Aurora fluttered her wings with an innocent look on her face, shaking her head with a shrug as if to say she had no idea. James narrowed his eyes. She had some idea otherwise she would not have made such a show of panic. “Very well Miss Sun, I shall find out sooner or later, I always do. God help you if I find you have lied to me this day.” Aurora smiled and nodded before flying back into his pocket. Her innocent look of confidence and confusion faded as soon as she was out of the Captain’s sight. They were looking for her now. It could only mean one thing; for she knew the laws she had broken and the penalty for such a sin.
Once they were back on the Jolly Rodger, Smee and the Doc were standing on the deck and instantly quieted looking very nervous when the Captain walked on deck. Hook however did not notice this; his mind was occupied with trying to figure out the scene that had played out before him on the island. Smee looked at the doc, as it seemed they were both trying to decide what to do but it was to late when they heard the cabin doors slam and the bolt pulled across them.
James gave a sigh as he turned throwing his hat to the dresser looking towards his bed to check on Caitlin. However, she was not there. “Hello James, I’m glad to see you are well and have returned from the island.” Hook recognized the voice and it’s cheery tone right off as Caitlin’s. Yet when he turned his eyes towards the table, it was quite the rude shock awaiting him. Caitlin looked wonderful, absolutely radiant and well rested and her skin had a healthy pink glow, rather then the sickly gray one she had gone to sleep with. In her lap sat a young red-haired boy who was looking up at Hook as well. Caitlin’s arms were wrapped around him holding a book where the boy could see the pictures as she read to him. What on earth was this child doing here in his cabin!!!
Caitlin smiled cheerfully, “Look who came to visit me James, he looks absolutely wonderful doesn’t he?” She looked down at the boy who smiled back up at her happy to have finally reached her lap that he had been trying to get to when he was captured. “To think I was worried about him being safe, why he’s much better then last time I saw him. As healthy as can be.” She was happy, there was no doubt about that. The rosy color of her cheeks he had come to miss when she fell ill had returned, and her smile that seemed to make the cold fly away and replace it with pure warmth graced her face once again.
“Yes, so I see. May I ask . . . what it is your doing?” He said trying to hide his utter frustration and rage that the boy was given to her without his permission or order, especially when he was not here.
Caitlin turned a page looking up at him, “We’re reading a story, Danny found this book and brought it to me wanting me to read it to him, so here we are.” She giggled a little putting her hand aside her mouth whispering to James, “He practically insisted and wouldn’t take no for an answer.” Her tone was playful showing she really didn’t mind and was enjoying herself. James narrowed his eyes a moment trying to decide what to do about this. The small boy reached up and tugged at Caitlin’s sleeve, before pointing back to the pages in the book. She smiled brightly, “Alright, back to the story. The bears walked through the forest looking for honey . . . .”
Hook’s eye began to twitch, as she seemed to cater to the child’s every whim. Not even with him did she show such eagerness in granting his wishes as she was to this boy. His eye continued to twitch as he stood there watching this scene.
