Jacob felt both nervous and excited as he followed Carlisle down to the basement after breakfast. Despite being constantly amazed and surprised by Renesmee, Carlisle hadn’t forgotten about Jacob, and he wanted to do another sonogram.
Jacob was half afraid his baby was going to start taking after Renesmee, preventing them from knowing anything more than the little they already did about the unborn child. It was an irrational fear because Jacob was still nauseated by the smell of blood, and he still wasn’t showing, not really. Liam and Carlisle insisted his middle had gotten a little bigger, but by less than half an inch.
Jacob shivered as the cold jelly was squeezed out onto his belly, and watched the screen intently. “I’m never going to get used to that stuff, am I?”
“No, I’m afraid not.” Carlisle chuckled and moved the little wand around until an image appeared on the screen.
Jacob’s eyes instantly went to the spot where the little dot had been the first time. He smiled when he saw it had doubled in size. He also noticed quite a bit of motion. “What’s that?”
“That’s the heart,” Carlisle answered. “If you listen closely, you can hear it.”
Jacob went silent and his whole body tingled at the fast-paced whooshing sound. “Is it supposed to be that fast?”
“Yes, that’s pretty normal. It looks like it’s still growing at the same rate. That also means I’m going to need to keep a close eye on you, not that I think you’ll mind.”
Jacob laughed. “I’d come down here and look at him every day if I could. I’m kind of jealous of Bella cuz I still have a long wait ahead of me.”
“I know what you mean,” Carlisle nodded. “Don’t get me wrong, I consider Bella a daughter now, and I care for her and Renesmee, but this is my niece or nephew. This baby is a blood relative to me, and I can’t wait for it to be born.”
Carlisle’s enthusiasm made Jacob smile. He grabbed a rag off the table and cleaned himself off while Carlisle printed out the picture. It was going to go with the first one into a little baby book Jacob was keeping. He only wished he could share them with his dad, but that didn’t seem likely to happen any time soon.
He put the picture away and slipped outside for a walk. He wasn’t supposed to go anywhere alone, but with Leah and Seth still roaming around he didn’t think it was that unsafe. As he walked through the trees he gradually became aware of another presence. He knew instantly who it was: Sam.
“I know you’re there. Why don’t you face me like a man?” Jacob demanded.
Moments later Sam’s naked form emerged from a clump of bushes. “Have you come to your senses?” he asked, looking Jacob over. “Are you even still pregnant?”
“It wasn’t me who lost his senses, and yes, I’m still pregnant. I had a sonogram this morning, and I got to hear his heartbeat.”
Sam seemed a little surprised. “Really? You don’t look any different, and you said Bella looked about ready to pop after only a couple of weeks.”
“I’m not Bella. We’re not sure about the whys and hows, but my fetus is developing at twice the normal human speed. He’s holding steady at that. And something else you should know: I gave the Cullens permission to turn Bella if there was no other way of keeping her around.”
Sam’s eyes narrowed. “You don’t have the authority to do that.”
Jacob chuckled. “As Edward pointed out when he asked my permission, I am the one who is Ephraim Black’s descendant. He made the original treaty. I may have renounced my claim as his heir, but this baby hasn’t, and right now I speak for him.”
Sam snorted but didn’t move from his position. “Like I said before, that thing shouldn’t even exist.”
Jacob glared daggers at Sam. He wanted to kill his former leader, but since Sam seemed to be restraining himself Jacob reluctantly decided he could meet him halfway. “Don’t say that. The situation may not be ideal, but didn’t you yourself say you thought part of imprinting was to breed stronger wolves for future generations?”
“Don’t twist my words!”
“But I’m not. This baby is proof I’ve imprinted on a vampire, and what else can you think of that would make a stronger wolf?” He paused to let Sam answer, but the alpha was speechless. “That’s what I thought. The scent of blood makes me puke, so I doubt he’ll be a blood sucker, but who knows what traits he’ll have. A wolf with the strength and impenetrable skin of a vampire could easily protect his tribe against pretty much anything. He won’t need to heal quickly because he’ll never get hurt.”
“What about the other one? It’s killed one person already.”
“Renesmee? Bella hardly counts as a victim. You even pointed out once that she was a willing victim. I don’t like it, but she got what she wanted. Might I also point out it was Liam who bit her, and even though we are no longer pack mates, I would think my imprinted mate would still be off limits.”
Sam’s face turned red with anger. “I guess you’re right. But does the child pose a threat? Answer me honestly.”
Jacob shrugged. “I wouldn’t think so. She drinks blood, but right now they’re giving her blood Carlisle buys from blood banks. I’m sure once she’s big enough they’ll teach her to hunt animals like they do. She’s not like those newborns we fought. She doesn’t even produce venom.”
“And Bella?”
“She’s doing better than expected. She can control herself around me and Renesmee, who is alive and has a heartbeat, too, by the way. Neither of us smell human, but still it’s a start. Well, Renesmee smells sort of human, but with a sweet vampire stench mixed in.”
Sam was quiet for a moment while he thought about everything Jacob was telling him. “If everything you say is true, then I guess we can resume the treaty again. But we will be watching for anything that might change.”
Jacob nodded. “It’s a start, I guess. I told you, they don’t want anyone getting hurt any more than we do.”
“What about Charlie?”
Jacob sighed and shook his head. “I don’t think that can be helped, but that’s between Bella and Edward. She still doesn’t know what she wants to tell Charlie.” Jacob felt for the guy, but there was nothing he could do other than voice his opinion.
“I guess I should get off Cullen land, then.” Sam frowned. He didn’t seem happy with the situation, but he was a fair-minded man.
“I guess you should.” Jacob nodded in agreement. He watched as Sam phased back into a wolf and ran off. He wasn’t sure what to tell the Cullens. Liam would go ballistic when he heard Jacob had put himself in danger, though Jacob had never actually felt like there was any real danger. Still, they needed to know the truce was back on.
Jacob was right about Liam’s reaction. His mate was at his side the moment he walked through the door. “Where the hell have you been?”
“Out,” Jacob answered. “And before you berate me for it, Leah was near enough to help if I ran into trouble, but I didn’t.”
“Lucky you.” Liam glared.
Jacob spotted Renesmee fast asleep in Rosalie’s arms but didn’t see any sign of Bella or Edward. “Where’s Bella?”
“Having some alone time,” Esme answered. “Alice just took them to the cottage.”
“Oh,” Jacob nodded. An old cottage that wasn’t too far from the house had been fixed up for the newlyweds to use for a sort of honeymoon. Esme thought Bella would like something small and cozy, and she wanted to keep them close for a while. “Are they coming back?”
“Eventually, I’m sure,” Liam answered. “Lucky bastard . . . what?” he said when Jacob shot him a dirty look. “Is it suddenly a crime to want to throw you over the edge of this couch right now? I want to, but I won’t because my brother doesn’t think it would be safe for the baby right now.”
Carlisle nodded. “You’re too rough. I’d tell you to try and restrain yourself, but one little slip-up… might be all it would take.”
“That’s probably a good idea,” Jacob agreed. “But I have some news. I did meet with Sam, and before anyone yells at me, I knew he wouldn’t hurt me, and obviously he didn’t.” The Cullens weren’t pleased, but they let him finish speaking. He gave them the highlights of the conversation and informed them that the treaty was back on.
“That is very good news,” Carlisle nodded. “I’m sure tensions will remain high for a while, but perhaps we can rebuild the trust.”
“Yeah.” Jacob sighed. They didn’t have to worry about being attacked any more, but Jacob doubted fixing things with Billy would be so simple. He was beginning to really miss his dad. He didn’t regret his decision, but it would be nice if they could all be one big happy family instead of him having to choose.
“Before I forget, I have something for you, too, Jake.” Carlisle’s voice interrupted the werewolf’s thoughts. “It’s upstairs.”
Jacob followed Carlisle up to his study. Everything looked the same except for a computer on the desk, with a pile of books next to it. “What’s all this?”
“It occurred to me that you haven’t graduated from high school yet, and you won’t be able to attend this year for obvious reasons. I hope you don’t mind, but I took the liberty of enrolling you in cyber school. Your books arrived today. All of your information is written right here.” Carlisle motioned to a piece of paper beside the books. “All you have to do is log in to get your assignments, and turn them in as you finish them.”
“I . . . .” Jacob struggled to find the right words, but none were coming to mind. He hadn’t even thought about school with everything that had happened, but it looked like Carlisle had. The gesture made things seem more official; he was part of the family.
Without a word he threw his arms around Carlisle and hugged him. “You’re welcome,” Carlisle chuckled. “At least I assume this is a happy response.”
“It is.” Jacob smiled as he pulled back, tears threatening to spill. “I just . . . here I was thinking I didn’t have a family, but I do.”
“Of course you do. I’m sure you miss your father, but I’m happy to have you as a brother-in-law.”
“I do miss him,” Jacob admitted as he wiped his eyes. “Do you think there’s any chance he’ll accept my choices?”
Carlisle gave him a soft smile and patted him on the shoulder. “Trust me, he still loves you, and he may very well come around in time. Liam has pulled some wild stunts. You can’t see them anymore, but he even gave me a few gray hairs. Still, I don’t think there’s anything he could do that would make me stop loving him. I’ve been so angry with him I’ve thought I would explode, but I still loved him, and I will continue to do so for the rest of my existence.”
“Yeah, Liam said you took care of him.”
“Yep, I became a father at the ripe old age of seven,” Carlisle joked. “But all jokes aside, I’m sure Billy will come around in time.”
“Thank you, for everything. Just let me get something to eat and I’ll start on my school work right away.” This was the most excited Jacob had ever felt about school. He wolfed down his dinner and went straight upstairs, where he stayed until he fell asleep at the desk.
