Chapter 37 ~ Close

The pain was beginning to waver as the day progressed and I actually finished compiling one of the manila folders on my desk. If I kept this pace up I'd be done by lets say next year. I glanced up to the clock and saw it was six thirty five, in about another hour or so nightfall would come. I would finally be able to speak to Bianca and maybe with Lilith, those speaking with Lilith was quite daunting in more ways then one.

My only thought for the entire day was of Voran, though with only knowing a few facts from the fax that Kikujiro sent me had only fueled my desire to place a wooden stake through his heart. The vampire archives that Kikujiro accessed were created by the state of California three years ago for the sole purpose of acknowledging of all vampires that dwelled within the state. Of course the archive itself wasn't complete, some vampires believed that the archive itself would only lead to there own downfall or the fact that most were technophobic. Those that were in the archive database were treated as legal citizens with basically ment they wouldn't be hunted down and killed. Those not registered were still treated as citizens though they could be executed without the legalization of a judge's approval, the "Three strikes and your out" rule. Judiths Law had seen to that, she was the first victim to be killed by a vampire after the vampire legalization law passed, which was quite stupid and I believed the culprit's head had been delivered to a local police department. The more radical politicians were able to pass the Judith Law, they the the support of most of the california cabinet. Then again the murder of Judith Simonan has quite horrible, the fact that someone with a camera was able to leak out those pictures to the public had caused an uproar of anti vampire sentiment. The law easily passed and all vampires were forced to register themselves into the vampire archives, those that didn't soon found out that they would be executed if they did anything wrong. To say those early years when the Judith Law passed were easy would have been a lie, that time had been chaotic. That was when the weekend warrior vampire hunter types came out of the wood work. Believing that the Judith Law gave them an excuse to go and hunt vampires, a large campaign had been pushed forth to show everyone the legal issues behind the Judith Law and that vampires that haven't been signed up could only be executed if they violated the law, though they would be on a higher restriction. Living in such a liberalte ste such as California had it's flaws, mainly the fact that some californians believe that a liberal state would allow them to do anything that they pleased. Of course with all laws there was a flaw within, some vampires had just used changed there name. Which caused the other more traditional vampires to look down upon them. Most vampires saw there name as symbols of pride and of there heritage, those that changed there name were seen as defiling the order. To tell you the truth the laws that the vampires set for themselves was were quite confusing to me, and I was dating one. That fact really makes me feel secure.

"Jacob, I have the execution papers."

I looked up from the manila folders and saw Sarah, though I knew it was her by her voice. I smiled as she handed me the papers and I flipped through them just to make sure everything was complete. I looked up to her as I noticed the expression upon her face, she seemed slightly hurt at the fact that I was looking at the documents. I didn't mean to insult Sarah and her capabilities by my actions, it was just a habit of mine to make sure everything was right. Then again I could be jumping to conclusions again. It's a guy thing.

"Thank you Sarah, have I done anything wrong?" Well I might as well as come out with it and ask, better safe then sorry or something like that.

Sarah slightly shrugged as the smile upon her face remained unfaltering, "Nope nothing wrong Jacob... and your welcome."

By the tone of her voice I couldn't tell if she was telling the truth or lying. Sarah just seemed to be herself and my mind kept on telling me otherwise. I hate having an indecisive mind when it comes to things like this.

"You sure?" I said with a smile on my face, the documents that she had given me now lay untouched upon a clearing on my desk.

Uncertainty washed acrossed her face as Sarah looked down at me, her hands folded beneath her chest. Which in turn caused her breasts to slightly perk up beneath police uniform. Not like I was watching or anything. Honest.

"Well I was thinking after this we...umm"

It couldn't be what I was thinking right? I mean come on. It can't be, it just doesn't make any sense. I watched Sarah as her blue eyes came to life. She slightly fidgited in place before she spoke.

"...get a drink together? maybe more..."

Ah ha, it was a date. Wait a date? "Youn a n a date?"

I'm a guy so I'm slow sometimes. Though it was always nice to clarify these things before you progressed any further or it could always lead up to unexpected events.

Sarah nodded with a smile, "Yeah a date... is that alright with you?" She seemed to be quite happy now, like the whole idea had been a burden for quite sometime. Anyway I was enjoying the fact that an attractive woman had asked me out, it's nice to have someone of the opposite sex to ask. I didn't have to stress over the little details and do my patented "It's not going to work" schema.

"Sure, I'd love to go. We'd have to schedule it sometime later though... case has to be finished before I can attend. Is that alright?" I said with a smile, hopefully it wouldn't be to obtrusive to include the current case that I was on. I had to solve that first after all.

Sarah nodded, that charming smile which made her pale pink lips look so perfect still upon here. \e. "It's no problem Jacob, totally understandable. Though after we still have plans together right?"

"Yup, wouldn't miss it."

"Great, now just finish up that case." Sarah said as she smiled. She seemed so radiant in that moment. "Well I have to go and work, I'll see you later." Sarah waved her fingers slightly, the way that you do to someone that you've known for quite sometime and yet have a more personal connection with. I smiled and waved back in the same manner but with a more masculine touch to it. I have a reputation to uphold you know.

I sighed quite happy with myself and with everything that had happened, when I suddenly remembered about Bianca and the thing that we have. Maybe I would be able to explain it to her, I mean I don't like denying women dates and all. Hell I hardly get asked out and anyway Sarah seemed so releaved and happy, and maybe I wouldn't get my ass kicked from here to Monteray by a vengeful vampire that happened to be my girlfriend and relative owner. Sigh, I just love my life...
