Jacob woke the next morning in Liam’s bed. He went to stretch, but ended up racing to the bathroom to throw up. When he lifted his head Liam was in the doorway. “You were up late last night,” the vampire commented.
“I wanted to get as much work done as I could,” Jacob said as he got up to rinse his mouth out. “I don’t want to mess this up.”
“You don’t need to be exhausting yourself like that either. I’m sure you’ll find a balance. I’ll go make you some peppermint tea.”
Jacob got dressed and came down just before Edward and Bella returned. “I didn’t see Seth or Leah this morning,” Edward said without taking his eyes off Renesmee. Bella was holding her while Rosalie was cleaning up a pile of mangled silverware.
Jacob shrugged. “Maybe they decided to go home and see their mom. I really couldn’t tell you. I can’t phase to ask them.”
“Oh, god!” Alice burst into the room, looking panicked.
“Alice, what’s wrong?” Carlisle asked. “What did you see?”
It took her a moment to gather her thoughts. “Charlie is on his way here.”
Bella’s eyes went wide with panic. “What are we gonna do? I can’t—it’s not safe!”
“Calm down, love.” Edward wrapped his arm around her to soothe her. “You’ve been doing so well. I’m sure we can think of something. Maybe if you hold your breath, though you’ll have to make it look like you’re breathing. Alice, how much time do we have?”
“Not much,” she answered. “I only saw it after the dogs left,” she pouted, obviously frustrated by the fact that they blocked her vision.
Bella whimpered and tightened her grip on her daughter when they heard the sound of a car pulling up the driveway. “Leave this to me,” Jacob said and walked out onto the porch.
He didn’t know exactly what he was going to do, but he had to try and at least stall so the Cullens could teach Bella how to act human. It seemed strange that she would need to learn that, but there were so many things the living did unconsciously that vampires didn’t.
The young werewolf felt like he was going to throw up again when Charlie got out of his car and glared at him. The feeling got worse when Charlie helped Billy out of the car. Charlie marched right up to Jacob and stopped only inches away. “Jake, I want some answers, and I want them now. You’re all supposed to be in Atlanta, so what the hell is going on here? I’ve overlooked a lot of strange things, but I’m not stupid.”
“I know.” Jacob flashed a nervous grin. “You deserve answers; I’m just not sure how much I can tell you.”
“What in the hell is that supposed to mean?”
“It means it’s all very complicated.”
“Is Bella sick or not? That doesn’t seem all that complicated to me.”
Jacob swallowed hard. He didn’t want to give too much away, but he couldn’t blame Charlie for being frustrated. “She was sick, but she’s better now. It changed her, though—physically, anyway.”
“Changed her how?”
Jacob bit his lip as he thought about how to describe it. “She’s not deformed or anything. Actually, she fits in with the rest of the family rather well now.”
“I see.” Charlie folded his arms. “Tell me, did she know what she was getting into?”
“I can honestly say she thought she did. Edward didn’t hide anything from her.”
“It’s like I told you, every family has skeletons in the closet,” Billy piped up. “Just go in and see her, and take things on a need-to-know basis. You never liked getting caught up in details anyway, not in your personal life.”
“Can I at least see her, then?” Charlie asked Jacob.
“Uh, yeah . . . .” Jacob glanced over his shoulder into the house. He guessed Bella was as ready as she’d ever be. “There is one thing you need to know, though. You’re a grandpa. Well, that is, they’ve inherited a baby, so to speak.” There was no rational way to explain how Bella could have had a baby in only a month.
Charlie grumbled under his breath and went inside, leaving Jacob alone with Billy and a very awkward silence. They stood there for a moment, not even looking at each other. “How . . . how are you?” Billy was the first to speak.
Jacob shrugged. “All depends what minute you ask me. Right now I’m nauseous.”
Billy frowned. “You know, the only reason I tried to keep Charlie from asking too many questions is I didn’t want you to get carted off to some laboratory because you insist on keeping it.”
Jacob’s nostril’s flared. “You . . . forget it.” He turned to go back inside.
“No, say what’s on your mind,” Billy insisted. “I can’t stop you, but damn it, you need to quit running away.”
Jacob turned back toward Billy, letting out a growl of frustration. “It wasn’t like you gave me much choice. The funny thing is, I never really decided anything. I was just so pissed you decided for me. I find out someone is growing inside me, then you tell me you’re going to kill it.”
“I did what I thought was best. That thing growing inside you is half leech for crying out loud! I don’t even know how it exists.”
“I don’t know either, but it does. That alone should mean something, but you judged it before it’s even born.”
Billy shook his head. “I should have known better. You’re beyond reason.”
Jacob couldn’t help but laugh. “Maybe I am. Forgive me for being biased toward my own child—your grandchild. Did Sam tell you the scent of blood makes me vomit every time I smell it? It never used to bother me this much. Some bloodsucker I’m carrying around . . . it dislikes blood so much it sees fit to make me violently ill over it.”
“Sam did tell me that, but we didn’t know that before.”
“Does it matter? Tell me, when my mom first found out she was pregnant with me, if you’d somehow known I’d become a werewolf and imprint on a vampire, would you have gotten rid of me?”
“I . . . no . . . .” Billy was obviously blindsided by the question. “We’re not talking about you.”
“No, we’re talking about the baby. There’s no way to know what’s going to happen, but doesn’t Little Spike deserve a chance?”
“Little Spike?” Billy raised an eyebrow.
“Seth named it,” Jacob sighed. “But back to my point. I know I’m young, and I’m terrified, but I can’t just kill this baby because it might be some kind of monster; which I will happily point out doesn’t seem likely so far. Carlisle wants to do some genetic testing when and if he can, but I get the feeling this kid is going to be some kind of super-wolf. Call it mother’s intuition.”
“I still think you’re making a mistake.”
“I’m okay with that, but mistake or not, I just want your love and support. You have no idea how much it’s killing me for us to be at odds like this. I want you to be here when your grandchild is born. I want to know you still care.” A few tears spilled down Jacob’s cheek.
“Jake, I don’t know what to say. Of course I care or I wouldn’t be here right now. I’m worried about you. What if that baby kills you like Bella’s killed her? You’re willing to take that risk?”
It was Jacob’s turn to be speechless. The possibility had been in the back of his mind. “I am. Look, I’m not as breakable as she was. If one of my ribs gets cracked it’ll heal in a few hours. Carlisle will take good care of me.”
Billy shook his head. “This is insane, but . . . I don’t like being at odds either. I’m sorry we didn’t include you in the decision-making. Obviously it does affect you the most.”
Jacob gave his dad a half-smile. “Does that mean you’ll support me?”
“I can’t promise anything. I want you to come home though.”
Jacob shook his head. “No, I need to be here. Carlisle has everything he needs in the basement. Speaking of which, would you like to see the sonogram?”
“I . . . I guess.”
Jacob grinned and went inside to get the picture. He saw that Charlie was watching football with Emmett and Jasper, eying the whole family with suspicion. Bella was on the end of the couch with Renesmee in her arms. She looked like she was in pain but was holding up well, considering.
Jacob ran up to his room and got the picture, returning to the porch where Billy was waiting. “Here.” He handed his dad the picture. “Right there.” He pointed to the fetus. “He’s tiny right now, but he won’t be for long.”
Billy stared at the picture in amazement. “So this is my grandchild.”
“Yes. As scared as I am, I can’t wait to hold him.”
“What if he is a she?”
Jacob shrugged. “If it’s a girl, I’ll still love her. I just keep thinking about the boy in my dream.”
“Dream? What dream?”
Jacob chuckled. “A while ago, before I decided to go out with Liam, a spirit visited me in a dream. He came running at me in the form of a snow-white wolf, then morphed into this boy. Now that I think about it, he had Liam’s eyes and smile. He convinced me to give Liam a chance; something about him having a stake in the outcome. Before he left, he called me Mom. It didn’t make much sense at the time.”
Billy’s eyes went wide. “Did you say a white wolf?”
“Yeah, why? Does that mean something?”
Billy took a deep breath to calm himself. “It is said that on his deathbed, Ephraim Black had a vision. The next great Quileute leader would come to us as a white wolf.”
Jacob’s knees gave out on him and he sank down to sit on the steps. “Oh . . . so if this baby is . . . well, no pressure there.”
“Jake, are you all right?”
“No. I mean, it makes sense, but at the same time it doesn’t.”
“It doesn’t make any sense. If what you’re telling me is true, the next chief will be half-vampire.”
“Well, think about it. Right now the pack is divided, and over what?”
“I see,” Billy nodded. “But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. This baby isn’t even born yet.”
“Okay,” Jacob agreed, though it was going to be hard not to think about it. They both turned when Charlie came out onto the porch.
“Time to go,” he said, not looking very satisfied with the few answers he’d managed to get. “Did you two patch things up?”
“I think so,” Billy answered. “Jake, if you won’t come home, will you at least come visit?”
“Maybe. Things have been crazy around here, and I just started cyber school, so I have school work on top of everything else.”
“Cyber school? Really?” Billy seemed impressed. “Yes, you should concentrate on that.”
“We’ll see him tomorrow,” Charlie interrupted. “Let’s go. I’m starving, and Sue is probably waiting on us.”
“Yeah, I’m hungry, too,” Jacob said as he got to his feet. “See you tomorrow, I guess.” He waved goodbye and headed back inside.
