Amy
The original plan was for us to have Anthony’s family over for dinner, but we ended up going over there instead. I talked to his mom on the phone for a few minutes, she seemed really sweet and I could see where A.J. gets it from. She said I shouldn’t have to do all that hard work. She was used to it, so her cooking for us would be much easier than me cooking for all of them. I agreed. I already had the idea in my head of them coming here, so it was making me a little anxious to change things. I didn’t want to seem rude during my very first interaction with her, and it was so nice of her to have us over. Anthony reminded me that even though I’d never been there, I had already met almost everybody. That made me feel a little better. I hoped Daisy would do well, since she’d met almost everybody too.
I had agonized over what to wear. All of my own clothes were crap, and I didn’t want to wear anything old of Nessie’s to her house. That would be kind of strange. Anthony convinced me it would be fine if I spent a little of the money I had earned on new outfits for myself, and my little flower.
After she’d gone to bed a few nights before the dinner, Anthony and I sat on the couch and cruised the Internet. Daisy’s clothes were easy. She looked precious in everything, so I found a dress for her in no time. Finding something for me proved a lot harder.
“Help,” I whined, and let Anthony take over the laptop. Soon I was poking him in the ribs, and joking that everything he suggested showed too much boob. I don’t think he had even realized he was doing that. His face immediately turned red. I hadn’t meant to make him feel bad.
“I just don’t want your mom to think I’m easy or something. You know, it’s the first time I’m meeting her I do like it..”
He nodded, avoiding my eyes.
“I think I’ll get it,” I said, looking at the cute white halter top dress. “It would be pretty for the beach.”
I reached over and put my hand on his knee. What I really wanted to do was straddle him, dramatically rip my shirt off and tell him it was okay to look, that it was okay to touch. I wanted him to. In my fantasies, of course, I was super hot. In real life, I didn’t think I’d be doing something like that anytime soon. I still needed him to know that I wasn’t upset with him.
I leaned over and touched my lips to his. I wasn’t afraid to kiss him, because he’d sure made it clear he liked kissing me. It was a fine way to pass an evening before bed, an afternoon while Daisy was at school, or a morning, just letting the dishes in the sink wait.
The thing that made me nervous about the dinner was that the one new person I’d be meeting was a really important one. It was obvious how important Nessie was to Anthony. With the way he talked about her, I had already decided there was no way I could live up to the high standards she’d set when it came to women in Anthony’s life. She was obviously a fabulous mother she’d raised five great kids. She sounded like she was a five start chef. Anthony said my homemade mac and cheese topped hers though, and that was really saying something. My secret was using smoked cheddar.
“Cooking is another thing you can talk to Mom about,” A.J. suggested on the way there.
“Yeah, that’s true.”
Awkward silence with strangers was the worst.
I broke into a sweat when we pulled up to the house. Anthony hopped out, excited. Daisy and I stayed put, staring at the house that was bustling with activity and laughter, coming from the shadows behind the curtains.
“No, A.J.! Mommy do it!” I heard from directly behind me. Anthony opened her car door and mine at the same time.
He offered his hand to me, and helped me out of the car.
“Your expert unbuckling skills are being requested back here.”
I got Daisy from the back seat, and smoothed out her sweet little pink dress, making sure she looked perfect. I’d gone with pale yellow, tea length number myself.
Did I remember to put on underwear?
Yes, yes I did.
Whew.
He gave me a tender kiss on the forehead before we walked from the car.
“You look amazing. This isn’t a big deal, we are just gonna have dinner,” he reminded me.
Not a big deal?
It was a huge deal.
I grabbed Daisy’s hand, and Anthony grabbed mine as we climbed the stairs to the front porch. The front door swung open before we even got near it.
Nessie was gorgeous. She was shorter than I had expected, and curvy. She had such great hair. Her long curls were so shiny, I could see where Swan got most of her good looks. Nessie looked so classy in a black wrap dress, and pearls that I was willing to bet were real.
There was soft playing music floating out behind her, and she was giving me a beaming smile.
“I’m so glad you guys are here!” she cried.
Her arms were around me before I knew it.
“Thanks so much for coming, I hope you are hungry!”
She released me, and went to kiss Anthony.
“I know you are. Hey, sweetie,” she said.
“Hi, Mom. This of course is Amy, and this is Daisy.”
“It’s so great to see you two,” Nessie said.
She squatted down to Daisy’s level, and warmly said hello to her. Daisy was clinging to me big time, but she at least waved at Nessie.
“Come on in,” she told us.
The house was pretty impressive, it was so perfectly decorated, and spotless. Most of the decorations were fresh flowers, or pictures that had frames ranging from simple to ornate. I couldn’t help slowing down to look at the pictures on the way to the living room.
The one that caught my attention was of a couple that looked like they were maybe in their last year of high school. I could definitely see a family resemblance. I could see some of Nessie in both of them. Asa looked a lot like the guy.
“Cousins?” I asked Anthony.
“Uh...no,” he said, looking a little uncomfortable. “Those are my grandparents.”
My eyebrows nearly flew off my head. Until then, I’d forgotten that Daisy and I were the only humans in this house.
“Jacob!” Nessie called. “Quit messing around out there and come say hello.”
I could see him through the sliding glass doors tinkering with a fancy looking grill. He gave me a wide smile, and bounded inside. He was even taller than Anthony! They looked like brothers of about the same age.
“Glad you made it,” he said, giving me a quick hug. “It’s nice to see you, and actually be able to talk to you!”
I smiled and nodded in polite agreement.
Nessie had gotten a better greeting from Daisy. She hid behind my legs when Jake said hello to her.
Once I made it to the living room, everybody else had to give me a hug hello too. Wow, these people sure like to hug!
Seth was there too. Daisy was okay with him, and she really liked Mollie.
I hadn’t noticed Jake slip out of the room, but I noticed when he came back in with a big brown package that was large enough to hold a microwave.
“Hey, Daisy! Come check this out,” he said.
She didn’t budge.
“Come on,” I said, pulling her over to Jake.
“This is something just for you, from Nessie and me.”
Jake sat on the floor with the box in front of him, and tore off the tape. I sat on the ground across from him, and pulled Daisy into my lap.
“Go ahead,” he said, pushing the box over to her. I noticed Nessie and Anthony both eagerly watching on out of the corner of my eye.
Daisy leaned down as I held on to her, and cautiously opened a flap of the box.
When she saw what was inside, she let out a cute little gasp.
“Mommy! My Wittle Pony!”
*Renesmee*
While I didn’t want to spoil Daisy, I did want to start things off on a good note and make sure she liked us.
Okay, who am I kidding? I did want to spoil her...big time! Not just with things, but with love. There isn’t a single thing wrong with spoiling a child with love.
They were both pretty shy, and seemed more comfortable around women. Who could blame them? I hoped that would change over time, at least a little.
I’d cleaned obsessively for days. I made sure everybody cleaned their room, and I straightened up Anthony’s old room in case Amy wanted to see it. I couldn’t feel very sad thinking of it as his old room anymore. How could I when he was so happy? And his happiness was so well deserved.
Jake made fun of me earlier in the morning when I said maybe we should repaint the kitchen.
“Relax, she’s human. Her eyes aren’t even that good!”
I gave him a dirty look, but he got me to take a break and spend the afternoon in our room...making up.
I don’t think I’d ever been so excited to meet someone in my life, as I was Amy. She was a sweet girl, and I loved seeing her with Anthony. It was precious the way he held her hand all the time.
Daisy whispered to Mollie, and asked if she could see her room. So they went upstairs, and Seth followed.
While the rest of us were sitting and visiting, Swan got up to change the station on the satellite radio.
“Hey, what’s the matter with this? You like classical music,” I said.
“Yeah, but I wanna hear the song we practice to in class.”
She had started going to a ballet class once a week in Seattle. She loved it, and she was really excelling at it. She’d already switched classes and moved up a level to the advanced one.
“I had a dream that when this song came on, my song was about to come on the other classical station.”
Everybody sort of stopped what they were doing and looked at her. We’d let our guards down around Amy, it wasn’t like being with just any human. We hadn’t decided if we’d talk about our gifts around her though, I hadn’t even thought about it.
Jake came inside then, and I gave him a meaningful look. He shrugged.
Amy had noticed a shift in the atmosphere, and looked very uncomfortable.
“Amy,” I said. “Did Anthony ever tell you that some of us have...special gifts?”
I could tell by the look on his face that he hadn’t.
She shook her head.
“Not all but some...of our kind,” I said, deciding maybe I shouldn’t use the V word, “can do some interesting things. Sometimes Swan sees things in her dreams that haven’t happened yet.”
Everybody waited for Amy’s reaction, it took her a minute.
“Like what?” she eventually asked Swan.
“Just random stuff. It’s always different,” she explained.
Asa cleared his throat loudly.
I shook my head, the baby of the family can be quite a little attention hog!
“Asa can influence any kind of plant life,” Jake told Amy.
“Influence?” she asked.
Anthony was sitting on the carpet at Amy’s feet, looking up at her with pride in his eyes. She was taking this very well.
“Pick a color,” Asa told her.
“Um, green?”
“Anything but green,” he said.
“Don’t give her a hard time,” A.J. said.
“I’m not! Just pick something else. How about purple?” Asa suggested.
“Sure.”
“Okay. Now look outside.”
We all turned our heads to the window. Right in the center of the backyard, the grass slowly started to change to purple. The color began to spread, until the whole backyard was a bright shade of purple.
“Woah,” Amy breathed. “That’s nuts.”
“I think I like it that way,” Asa said proudly.
“Yeah, it looks awesome!” Xandra chimed in.
“Okay, change it back,” I said.
I like purple, just not purple grass.
“Really?” Asa said, looking a little disappointed.
“Yes, really.”
Faster than it had gone to purple, the grass changed back to green.
I was glad nobody mentioned my gift. That may have been a little much for her.
At the end of our long driveway, I heard a car begin crunching down the gravel.
“Who the heck is that?” I wondered, and headed to the front door.
I smiled and shook my head when I recognized the car.
“Hey! I brought back your DVD!” Rachel called as she bounded up the porch steps.
“And you absolutely had to bring it back tonight?” I said.
“Of course, it would have been rude of me to keep it longer,” she said with a grin, reaching the porch.
“You know, Amy and A.J. are here.”
“Oh!” she exclaimed innocently. “Was that tonight?”
“If this was a sitcom, you’d be the crazy neighbor.”
“At least I’m the fun kind of crazy, not the dangerous kind. Mmm, do I smell ribs?”
*Anthony*
Everybody loved my Amy, how could they not? Same with Daisy, she was a great kid.
Dinner was fantastic. Mom and Dad made ribs, corn on the cob, flat bread with pesto asparagus and fontina cheese, and garlic butter shrimp. The theme of the night was grilling, so Dad was a happy camper. He got along really well with Amy, they were both into the same kinds of music. They got into a discussion about what bands nobody should ever cover. It was so fun to watch Amy come out of her shell when she was talking about something she loved.
“The Doors,” Amy said. Dad nodded in agreement. “I don’t care who it is, but if somebody remade one of their songs, there’s just no way it could be the same.”
When we were all picking at the last of our meals, Daisy ducked under the table to play with one of her new toys. Mom laughed.
“Swan used to do that all the time when she was little,” she told Amy.
“Sometimes you just need a moment to yourself, you know?” Swan said.
We could hear Daisy softly singing to her pony under the table.
Aunt Rachel looked under the table and laughed.
“Hey, cutie!” she said.
Amy had looked really surprised when Aunt Rachel showed up.
I knew seeing Aunt Rachel reminded Amy of such a dark time, she was uncomfortable around her at first. Knowing her, she was probably embarrassed to see her too.
Any unexpected arrival, I knew Amy would think it was Randy. She felt so much better now that she’d gotten a new phone number and he couldn’t bother her anymore, but that increased the fear that he’d show up somewhere. I tried my best to keep her distracted when we took Daisy to school. She said she didn’t want to take her to a different one, Daisy liked her teachers there, and it wouldn’t be fair to her. I hated to see the way Amy would tremble with fear sometimes on the way to the school. I knew it wouldn’t happen though, because he was still being watched. I didn’t have anyone guarding Amy and I anymore, she was never out of my site so I knew she’d be safe. There was always a pack member over there, I’d never relax otherwise. I wanted to keep one there for at least a little while longer.
“Dessert time!” Mom called, coming back inside with a platter. “Grilled cinnamon peaches,” she announced proudly, setting the heavenly smelling dish in the center of the table.
“Wow. I never woulda thought do grill fruit!” Amy said.
“You can grill anything!” Seth said happily.
“I didn’t think of it, trust me. I’ll write down some good recipe sites for you. I like to make different things all the time, I’ve found some real gems online,” Mom told her.
We stayed until way past Daisy’s bedtime, but she was still pretty hyped up. Mollie and Xandra let Daisy chase them all around the house. It was hilarious, because she couldn’t tell them apart, and when one of them would jump out and surprise her, she’d yell.
“Who are you!?”
Mollie or Xandra would run off again without telling her the answer, with Daisy giggling, running after whoever that had been.
“Inside voice!” Amy whispered loudly as Daisy screamed past.
“It’s fine,” Mom said. “Really, one screaming kid is nothing compared to five. As long as she’s having fun.”
We all did.
After several dozen hugs and kisses, I followed behind Amy as she carried Daisy to the car.
“Do you like everybody?” I asked Daisy.
“Uh huh,” she answered over Amy’s shoulder.
“The twins are so silly!” she said.
“You got that right. What else?” I said.
“Nessie smell nice,” she told me.
I heard Mom laugh inside. I turned around a blew her a kiss in the window.
Daisy was asleep in the back of the car in five minute flat. Amy and I were pretty quiet on the way home so that we wouldn’t wake her. Once she’d been tucked in, I asked her what she thought of my parents.
“Very cool. Do you always eat like that over there? I think I’ll be full for about a week!” she said through the bathroom door as she was getting ready for bed.
“Most of the time. They made special stuff for you though.”
Because you’re special, I thought. Then I remembered I can say things like that out loud now.
“That was sweet of them.”
She came back into the bedroom in her sleep shorts and a sleeveless V-neck shirt.
“It’s because you’re special,” I said to her with a smile.
She smiled back and looked down.
I reached out and took her by the hips.
“Thanks for meeting them. You were great tonight.”
She shrugged modestly.
“I love you, Amy.”
I don’t even know where that came from. I’ve said it a million times in my head. I’d never said it to her before though, and for a second I was afraid that might be too fast for her. It would be so easy to scare her off.
“I love you, too.”
I leaned down, and pressed my lips firmly to hers.
Maybe it wouldn’t be that easy to scare her off. After all, she’d seen me turn into a giant wolf and just met my vampire mother, so I guess telling her how much I loved her wasn’t a huge deal.
A/N: Song for this chapter is Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton, and oldie but a goodie. Feel free to look it up on youtube, it’s lovely and what I’ve had in my head for several months when I pictured this night.
