Caitlin stood patently next to the door waiting for James to come back from his search through the cabin for a quilt they could sit on while stargazing. Cat leaned back against the wall, leaning her head back and closing her eyes. She had already had a full day since she awoke, but remembering what Smee had told her about how long she had been asleep, she was in no hurry to return to her slumber.
She smiled to herself thinking about Danny, they had had so much fun together today. Cat only wished that James might have shared in it with her. Deep inside she had been hoping perhaps they could take him in and raise him together. She was unable to have children, and here was this perfect little boy who needed parents and a place to live. She could teach him how to read and write, do arithmetic. Even teach him how to play an instrument if he wanted. The smile faded from her face as she gave a sigh. James seemed to think there was no possible way he could even spend one night near them. It was extremely clear that her asking if they could raise him as their own was completely out of the question.
Caitlin did adore the young redhead. He was smart as could be and quick to learn. His small green eyes always seemed to be watching, hungry to gain knowledge about all the things around him. Somehow he made her feel as if she was really needed, and she could really do him some sort of good.
“MAN OVERBOARD!!!” suddenly broke the silence, causing Cat to jump up from her rest against the cabin wall. It came from on deck perhaps from one of the night watches. Caitlin instantly rushed to the doors and pulled them open going out on the deck. Looking around a moment her eyes landed on a small gathering of 6 or 7 pirates next to the railing starring down over the side into the sea. For some reason, Cat had a sick feeling well up inside of her as if something was terribly wrong and she rushed down the steps heading for the rail as well.
James had heard the call as clearly as Caitlin had, but there was rarely anything that could be done about a man falling overboard in this land after the fall of night. They were usually declared carnage and unsalvageable in a matter of seconds with the sorts of creatures that swam below them in the freezing darkness. In fact he had every intention of punishing the crew in the morning for anyone being above deck after he had specifically ordered them all below just a short while ago. But that could wait, he had a date set with his wife and he had no intentions of it being interrupted. However, when he returned to the main part of the cabin carrying the quilt he had found, Caitlin was gone and the double doors were left standing open. Upon seeing this, James instantly dropped the quilt and hurried out the doors. He stopped seeing Caitlin running across the main deck to the small group of pirates.
Cat came to the rail and looked down into the water with the rest of the pirates who stood by. A look of horror crossed her face and her eyes went wide, “DANNY!!!” She cried out seeing him struggle to stay above the water. The pirates were oblivious to how upset she was and how much she cared for the child, “He’s done for now misses. Them mermaids will have their way with him. They like nothin’ better then to get their hands on a live one.” One of the men said callously.
James could hear the name Cat shouted and could almost foresee what her next reaction was going to be. “Dear God this can not be happening.” He said to himself. Quickly he started down the stairs as well, wanting to get to her before she did something foolish. Just as he had suspected, Caitlin took a few steps back. If no one else was going to bother to do something, she would. James started to run now, “CAITLIN!!! NO!” He reached out to catch her but he missed her by just an inch and over the side she went in her nightgown, plunging into the water below. James fell against the railing, “CAITLIN!!!”
Cat quickly surfaced from below and swam over to the small boy as fast as she could. There was nothing else on her mind, no concern for herself or what dangers might be awaiting them near by. His arms were flailing about over his head as he started to sink into the cold water. But she got to him just in time and pulled him up to where he could breathe holding him tight against her. He coughed and spit trying to get air back into his lungs. “It’s alright Danny, it’s okay.” She said quickly trying to calm him down, he wrapped his arms around her neck and his legs around her middle clinging on for dear life. Cat wrapped her arm back around him and slowly began to swim back towards the ship. Only having one arm to swim with now since the other was holding the redheaded boy who had a death hold on her.
James watched his eyes wide knowing full well the danger Cat was in, and for what? A blasted lost boy!?! How in the hell did he fall over board in the first place? “Here they come!” One of the spectators said pointing off in the distance. Every eye on board turned to see four mermaids swimming fast towards the two humans moving slowly towards the ship in the water. The moonlight made them easy to see as their scales caught the rays.
“GET A ROPE! Lower the ladder on the port side! MOVE IT, Get her back on the deck NOW!” Hook shouted at his men, they all rushed off to follow his orders, Hook leaned back over the railing. “CAITLIN! Get back to the ship immediately!” His eyes turned towards the dark creatures that were rapidly drawing nearer. This was just what she needed, a close encounter with the vile things that lived below them in the waters, she would never sleep again if she saw one up close.
The rope ladder was thrown down hitting against the side of the boat, and Caitlin kicked her feet harder trying to move them faster. She had never really liked swimming when it was dark, especially since it made it impossible to know what was under the water. Cat did know that it was extremely deep below them as cold as the water was. The little boy was shivering against her as she held him tight. She found herself wanting to get back on the deck as much as James wanted her there. Finally she reached up grasping the bottom rung looking at Danny. “Come on, you can climb. Climb up the rope back onto the ship. I can’t carry you up the steps Danny; I’m not that strong. You must do it. It’s alright, your safe now.” He looked at her his little lips quivering turning blue with the cold and nodded. She helped him up on the ladder, and slowly he began to climb one rung at a time. Caitlin started to climb up behind him, so he would know she was there and not let him fall. Her feet were planted firmly on the bottom rung as helped him up a few more steps.
James sighed in relief, feeling as if now she would be safe. A scolding was in order for her rash and unreasonable actions, she could have been killed or drowned just jumping over the side like that without so much as a word or warning to anyone. Caitlin picked up her right foot setting it on the second rung and started to lift her weight to the next step when suddenly a hand came up out of the water and grabbed her left ankle. Cat’s eyes went wide as she looked down to see what her foot had been caught on, only to find one of the faces that James had hung her over the side to show her the night of their wedding. She could hardly breathe or call for help and tried to kick her foot away. The pale, almost blue in color face surrounded the strangest eyes she had ever seen in her life and the hand that held her began to pull her down off the ladder. Caitlin’s hands wrapped tight around one of the rungs, holding on for all she was worth.
Danny continued to climb not seeing the struggle that was beginning behind him as Caitlin wasn’t making a sound. James furrowed his brow seeing that she was not moving up the ladder. “What the devil . . . CAITLIN! WHAT IS TAKING SO LONG, GET UP HERE NOW!”
Cat was still holding on tight, very determined not to be pulled back into the water when she heard James command. Yet she found her struggle became futile when another hand emerged from the water and grabbed her other ankle. Still she would not let go, but it was no use she simply wasn’t strong enough. She could almost feel her body stretching under the enormous strength with which she was being pulled. Closing her eyes tight she cried out in pain and fear, leaning her head back to look up and see James’ face wanting to call to him for help but unable to make as sound.
Now he knew something was wrong. He looked towards the direction they had spotted the mermaids finding all four had disappeared in a matter of seconds. His eyes turned back to the water below seeing two mermaids missing and the other two circling like sharks just a few feet around Caitlin. Quickly he moved along the railing to get a better look at the situation, and saw the other two mermaids holding on to Caitlin’s feet. Inside he began to panic, how in God’s name did this situation come about? He could not do much good to simply jump in the water and save her, with only one hand it hindered his ability to swim extensively. Not to mention they would be outnumbered and he could not trust the crew to help. “PULL THE LADDER UP!!!” He turned and ordered the crew trying to figure out how to get her away from those monsters quickly, hoping this would be enough. Four pirates started to pull on the ropes finding the ladder stuck and resisting.
They were trying to pull up, and the mermaids where pulling down and it was Caitlin in between hardly able to continue this struggle. Cat closed her eyes; she had nothing to defend herself with. All she wore was a thin cotton nightgown and not so much as a comb in her hair to try and use against them. Her fingers began to slip and she cried out again, unable to hold on any longer. The rung slipped from her grasp and she plunged into the cold water.
The men who had been pulling on the ladder fell back, causing the ladder to jerk hard. Danny had still been climbing up the steps, and his small hands lost their grip as well and he shrieked heading back down for the water. However, before he could hit the surface, Peter Pan seemed to appear out of nowhere and caught him flying up into the air and disappearing once more. Hook had more pressing matters on his mind, and pushed away from the rail disappearing him self for a few minutes.
All that could be seen in the darkness was Caitlin’s white nightgown just below the waters surface. Caitlin kicked, scratched and bit whatever hands were on her and arms that were near her. She began clawing her way back to the surface gasping for air trying to swim back for the ship. However her attackers grabbed her again pulling her back underneath the water.
Not long after, Pan returned but kept himself hidden in the shadows. With his back against the haul of the ship he began making sounds and clicks. All four mermaids stopped their game and turned looking towards the ship, still holding onto Caitlin but letting her breathe with her head above water. When Pan stopped the sounds they all looked at each other, making strange sounds of their own.
James returned on deck, carrying one of the long riffles they used with him. Putting his foot against the railing he cocked the weapon and took aim towards the group of mermaids. The other pirates began to draw their weapons as well and take aim, James saw this out of the corner of his eye. “PUT THOSE GUNS AWAY YOU IMBICILES!” He roared, before taking aim once again. “I shall not have you firing your weapons and hitting Caitlin with your disgustingly negligent aim.” He fired a shot, hitting the furthest mermaid from Caitlin in the shoulder. She hissed and screamed grasping at her wound with her hand, disappearing beneath the surface. Her sisters all looked up at James, and hissed as well. Within seconds, the three left disappeared into the darkness taking Caitlin with them.
James lowered his gun, slamming his hook into the railing “NO!” That was not the reaction he had been trying for. His intention was to fire a warning shot so that they would scatter and leave Caitlin behind so she could once again swim for the ship. “CAITLIN!!!!!!!” he screamed shaking all of Neverland with his thunderous voice and deep seeded sorrow that had already set in.
His eyes turned back towards the water where he had seen her last, gritting his teeth with a fiery anger and hatred towards everything around him. The land, the sea, the boat, the inhabitants of Neverland, and everyone aboard his own crew. What had she ever done to any one of these things that they all consorted together to rip her hand away from his? They had been trying for so long, torturing her mind and body. Putting a devastating strain on her very soul, and now it seemed they had succeeded in their quest. They had seen what the sirens of the sea did to those who walked on land and fell into their grasp; there was no reason for them to treat Caitlin any differently. Perhaps even more cruelly then they had ever treated any other that found themselves captured, simply for who she was.
A while later, James had returned to his cabin and stood motionless in the middle of the room. She was gone. All of her things were left behind, still in their proper places yet she was not there and would never touch them again. Hook’s eyes landed on the open book on his desk, and slowly made his way to his chair sitting down. Caitlin’s diary, left opened and stopped in mid sentence. She must have been writing in it when that spawn of hell came into her presence, that little monster who was the very reason she was murdered in the middle of the night.
Looking down to the page he began to read her final passage;
“I have been taken ill and slept for the past four days. At least that is what Mr. Smee tells me. He came in earlier and dined with me at my request, for I so longed for someone to talk to. James was not here, he was ashore attending to some matters Smee told me that had to be taken care of. He told me that James was once part of the English Aristocracy and a very wealthy man. Yet when I asked Smee what made him turn to piracy, he was unable to recall the details. I suppose it’s for the best. Things that lie in the past should remain there. All dredging up memories does is cause pain and sorrow. They should be forgotten so that one may continue on with their lives. I’ve discovered this to be true, remembering that I am barren and unable to have children. I was so looking forward to starting a family with James, it broke my heart when I found out it could never be.”
Hook closed his eyes, grinding his teeth refusing to let any of the emotions threatening to emerge out of the depths of his heart. She was gone now, and he had never told her that her not being able to have children was a lie. She died thinking she was nothing but a mere shell of a woman, and nothing more. James opened his eyes and continued reading her script, feeling as if he had to.
“But then something wonderful happened. When I told James of this, and I was so upset and distraught over remembering my inability to bare offspring, he wrapped his arms around me and held me close. Then he told me, that even with this knowledge, there was no difference in his eyes when he looked at me. At first I was angry with him, for knowing of such a thing without telling me, but after I had time to think about it I realized he was only trying to protect me. He really does love me for me. He said nothing about this fact, and continued treating me like a queen. I know how truly lucky I am to have been given to such a man. I also know that my father, although I have no memory of him, must have loved me very much as well finding someone who would take care of me.”
James couldn’t continue and threw the journal from the desk to the floor. Was there anything between them that held a bit of truth? In her words he could see the lies he had told her, that her trust in him made the truth and become real in her mind. “If truly I loved her . . . I would never have let her die believing such lies.” He hissed suddenly taking his hook and drawing it across his arm making a deep cut. It was a poor attempt to reroute his pain and disappear into something other then the tears that were begging to emerge. Reaching down into his desk he pulled out a bottle, pulling the cork with his teeth and spitting it on the floor before draining it to the last drop in one long pull. The blood from the wound he had inflicted on himself was dripping down his arm but he did not care.
Standing he flung the empty bottle across the room, turning about and hooking a chair with his Iron limb he smashed it against the wall. He began throwing book’s, dishes, weapons, and anything else that came into his past, yelling and cursing at the top of his lungs, trying to drowned out his sorrow as the demons that had been laying quietly for so long were each waking up and clawing out. Another bottle was opened, drained and broken as he continued his rampage through the cabin, tearing through everything destroying anything that could be destroyed. His hands found the box that he had brought back from the island to give Caitlin, and he stopped himself from smashing that as well calming down for one brief moment as he set it back down on the table, and opened the lid looking inside.
It held the most beautiful necklace and a pair of matching earrings. Pure silver decorated elegantly with diamonds, emeralds and rubies in the form of a Celtic knot. Picking it up out of the box he starred at it, remembering how he dreamed she would appear with it adorning her neck, dressed in an elaborate gown. The tears began to well up in his eyes as he held it between his fingers, “I can not even bury you with the Caitlin . . . it seems as if it was not enough they took your life . . . . but they took your body as well . . . .leaving me nothing to bury . . . or to build a proper memorial to remember you . . .” He whispered his voice trembling with each word. He closed his eyes wrapping his fist around the object, and began to yell again scream again throwing the box and the jewelry across the room tipping over tables, and kicking over chairs.
Outside of the Cabin, Smee and all of the other crewmen went about their duties quickly, and as silent as the grave. The loud sounds of the Captain’s violent grieving causing a shutter to go up each mans spine. Smee turned and walked towards Liam who was standing at the rail where Caitlin at jumped earlier silently starring down into the water. It was obvious that Liam was feeling a similar grief that the Captain was going through, only quietly. Smee had been doing his best to keep the doc beat down and aware of his foolish glances and feelings towards the Captain’s wife. “She didn’t belong to ye. She was never goin’ to belong to ye.” He said harshly. Liam’s jaw just clinched tight at the words. Smee took a step closer, “Ye would do well to remember that. There ain’t nothin’ stoppin’ the Capt’n from killing ye now. Don’t remind him how much he hates ye.” Smee said before turning and walking away.
Aurora was hiding under her feather quill bed in her glass chamber, shivering and frightened as she heard the loud ruckus and violence, born of the Captain’s rage and grief. She was terrified to move afraid of what he might do if she saw someone he could take it out on. The strong smell of spirits was filling the room rapidly, letting her know that he was getting quite drunk and more unreasonable as the moments passed. Her eyes were wide as she could feel her little heart beating a million beats a second.
It was a great tragedy, and all would feel the pinch once the Captain emerged from his cabin and had time to grow callous, angry and hateful to replace his grief. For now, the only sound that could be heard was that of shattering glass, breaking would, and the pain filled screams of a desperate and distraught man.
