I am so sorry it has taken me this long to update! I've been busy and a bit...uninspired. Please forgive me for taking weeks to get this up, and I hope you enjoy.
My world was spinning, turned upside-down, tumbled about like it was in a dryer. He was back. He was going to get me again.
Pull yourself together. You’re stronger than him now, remember?
But he knows how to threaten me. He always knows.
He doesn’t know squat. He can’t hurt you anymore.
He’s back. He’s back. Oh, God, he’s back!
I sat rigidly in my seat as he, the demon of my past, called roll.
When he reached my name, he seemed to smile a little wider.
“Whitaker Hill?” he asked. I raised my hand, but he didn’t look up.
“He’s here, sir.” I looked over to Angela in gratitude.
“Really? I didn’t hear him.”
“I’m here,” I managed to choke out.
“Nice of you to speak up.” His eyes bore into mine, and though I wanted to, I couldn’t look away. I was a mouse caught in the hypnotic gaze of a sinister serpent. But I was a regular mouse no longer. I had secret weapons.
I hid my fear and glared at him in defiance. He laughed quietly and continued down the list of students.
I couldn’t take it; I had to get out of there.
“Where do you think you’re going, Mr. Hill?” the devil in disguise questioned.
“To the restroom. I think I’m going to be sick,” I replied tightly, my hand on the door handle.
“You looked fine a minute ago. Sit back down.”
“No.”
“Excuse me?”
“I said no.”
“I believe you mean no sir.”
“If I meant that, I would have said it.” The class was looking at the two of us in confusion; I always tried to be respectful of my teachers, subs or not.
His gaze hardened. “Sit down, Whitaker.”
“Don’t you dare,” I growled. “I’m through taking orders from you.” He looked ready to hit me.
“Just do as he says, Whitaker,” Angela whispered from her seat near the door. Her soft eyes pleaded with me to calm down and not do anything.
I nodded curtly to her and returned to my seat.
“Mr. Hill, see me after class.” I didn’t answer him, but I knew I wasn’t leaving.
Fear crept back over me, but I kept my face calm, a trick I had learned from Jasper. By Mr. Perkins’ smug smile, I had a feeling he knew it was a façade.
Help me.
That last class passed too quickly. Before I knew it, everyone was filing out the door, yet I stupidly remained in my seat.
Edward, please send Jasper to this classroom. I might need help, I mentally cried. Tell him he’s back.
“Well, Whitaker, I’m disappointed in you.”
“Leave me alone, you son of a—”
“Ah, ah, ah.” He waggled his finger at me. “I thought your daddy taught you better than that.”
“Leave Dad out of this. I was going to say ‘gun,’ if you hadn’t interrupted me.”
“I’m sure.” I refused to look at him, so I only heard the lock click, deafening my ears with its finality. “It’s wrong to lie.”
“I don’t give a crap what you think.”
“Oh, so disrespectful.” I finally stood away from my desk as he advanced toward me. “Who changed you, Whitaker? You used to be so accepting of my authority. I never got to show you all the fun we could have.” My mind was screaming at me to run, to flee from the predatory demon before me… But I couldn’t. I couldn’t move, because it would reveal what we were. There was no way I could run at a human pace, not from him.
“I don’t want any of your kind of fun, you sick—”
“Ah. Language.” He leaned against a nearby desk. He looked smug and knowing; he knew I wasn’t going anywhere. “Of course you want my kind of fun. You’re gay, aren’t you?”
“I think that’s what started all of this, so yeah. But I’ve found ways to enjoy those experiences that aren’t abusive.”
His gaze hardened. “So you finally found someone to give it to you up the ass, huh?” he growled. “I was supposed to show you that, Whitaker, but you ran away from me.”
“No…” He was angry, not a good sign.
“Yes. So that means I have something to show you. And since you’re no longer a virgin, I don’t have to be as careful.”
“No!” I backed away from him, right into a corner.
I was saved by a knock on the door.
The devil of a man stopped a foot or two in front of me, swearing under his breath. He caressed my cheek with a deceivingly gentle finger. I shuddered in fear and relief when he stepped towards the door.
He flipped the lock and opened the door just enough to see who was outside.
“May I help you?”
“Yes, sir. Is Whitaker here?” Jasper had come to my rescue.
“Yes. We have some things to discuss.”
“But why, sir? Aren’t you a substitute?”
His jaw ticked. “Disrespect.”
“Jasper,” I breathed, desperation laced in my voice. He shifted in the doorway, his stance betraying his desire to enter the room.
“Well, sir,” he continued. “There’s somewhere we need to be soon. We can’t be late.”
“I’m sorry. Who are you?” Mr. Perkins snapped.
“Jasper, Whitaker’s…friend.” I understood Jasper’s hesitance, but his presence emboldened me.
“He’s my boyfriend,” I stated brazenly, removing myself from the corner where I had been cowering. I almost shrunk back into myself when he glared at me, but one look at Jasper had me straightening my back in determination.
As I walked past my ex-teacher, I felt his hand grab my arm. I jerked away and Jasper wrapped his arm around my waist.
“Don’t touch me,” I growled. Jasper knew I wasn’t talking to him.
“This isn’t over, Whitaker,” Perkins snarled. He doesn’t deserve a title.
“It will be when I talk to the principal.”
“You won’t.”
“Why? Because you said so? You can’t threaten me anymore.”
“Yes I can. Your parents—”
“Are dead. Haven’t you heard?” I couldn’t help the insane smile and choked laugh that emerged. “They burned to death.” Jasper’s arm tightened around me, his confused worry reaching out to me. “And you can’t use my grandfather, because he died in November.” Perkins’ malicious gaze cut to Jasper. I moved my body between them. “There’s nothing, no one you can use that I wouldn’t fight for. You can’t hurt me, and you most certainly won’t hurt him.” I lowered my voice, trying to convey my seriousness. “I would die before I let you get away with anything again.”
His brow furrowed in confusion and concentration. “What has happened to you? You have changed, and I don’t think I like it.”
“You wouldn’t. I’m not weak and submissive anymore. He’s what happened to me.” I jerked my thumb back at Jasper. “I went through some of the worst possible hell, and he brought me out of it.” Said person placed a gentle kiss on the back of my neck.
“If you say anything, I’ll deny it.”
“So be it. They can check records.”
“Please don’t. I need this job.” I started at his sudden change in tone. “I’ll change, I swear.” I looked back at Jasper, who nodded, affirming Perkins’ honesty.
“Fine. But if I ever hear or see that you’ve tried something again, you won’t know what hit you.” He nodded solemnly. I left with Jasper right behind me, still shocked at the sudden flip of attitude and considering the possible mistake I had just made. Maybe I spoke too quickly...
“Um…was that…” Jasper tried and failed to speak.
“Who? The man who molested me? The man who traumatized me so badly my memory became faulty? Yeah, that was him,” I snapped.
“Shit. I’m gonna kill him.” I grabbed his arm before he could turn around.
“No. He thinks he’ll be okay right now. If he’s in that false sense of security long enough, he’ll slip. Then, we nail him. I’m safe. He won’t touch me again.” Jasper pulled me to him and kissed me passionately there in the hallway.
“I’m sorry,” he murmured. “When Edward told me you said ‘He’s back,’ my first thought was of that nomad that attacked you. I thought, ‘How in the hell is he back?’ So, when I saw that teacher, I didn’t realize…”
“It’s all right. If you had known, I might not have been able to restrain you.”
“True.” He placed his arm around my shoulders and kissed the top of my head. “Come on. Let’s go home.”
Graduation crept closer. It was at the end of May, so it was about five weeks away.
My last teacher, the one Perkins was subbing for, went into early retirement, which meant Perkins would be there for the rest of the year.
He had been well behaved so far, but I didn’t let myself fall into the false belief that he was totally changed, though I did relax slightly.
That bit of relaxation disappeared when he asked Mike to stay after class.
I glanced up sharply at our newest teacher. He shook his head at me and held up his pinkie finger, silently promising he wouldn’t do anything.
I didn’t believe him.
That’s why I waited with Mike until everyone else had filed out of the classroom.
“Mr. Hill, I didn’t ask you to stay after,” Perkins stated.
“You know well why I’m here,” I responded.
“I assure you we will only be discussing Mr. Newton’s grades.”
I looked between the curious Mike and the seemingly kind Perkins. I nodded and left.
I could hear their conversation; they really were only talking about grades. Shrugging off my discomfort and suspicions, I slipped into the car and rode home.
So... What do you think? Did Whitaker make the right decision? If not, what do you think he should have done? I want to know what's going through your heads right now... -lol-
TheBlindQueen--I couldn't help it! It was too much of a temptation... And besides, there aren't that many cliffhangers in this story... -lol-
Alecto--o.O You read it in a day?! Wow... :) And I'm not evil, just...devious. ;)
