Three weeks passed, and Charlie and Billy came to visit nearly every day. Jacob was glad to have his dad there, even if they couldn’t talk openly in front of Charlie. It seemed like everything was looking up again. Sam kept to the treaty, and even called once to see how Jacob was doing. There was no malice in his tone, which was a great relief to Jacob.
Renesmee continued to be a constant surprise. Her physical growth was slowing, but her mental development wasn’t. She could crawl, sit up, and she was beginning to talk! Carlisle kept everything well documented, and the family took dozens of pictures to make it look like years were passing instead of only weeks.
Bella was adapting to her new life, and each day it got a little easier for her to be around Charlie. The only thing she wasn’t getting used to was Alice’s constant attempts to give her a makeover. Everything else was second nature now, and like Renesmee, it seemed like Bella was much older than she actually was.
Jacob’s pack grew by two members: Quil and Embry. They’d been Jacob’s friends since childhood, and they’d decided they wanted to be with him. Jacob was overcome with emotion when they showed up, though that wasn’t a rare thing anymore. He was experiencing the same raging hormones every pregnant woman did, and it didn’t take much to set him off.
He punched a hole in the wall the morning he woke up to discover his increasingly tightening clothes wouldn’t fit anymore, only to apologize profusely and in tears ten minutes later. Fortunately, Liam had bought him slacks with elastic waistbands and baggy t-shirts.
One afternoon Jacob came downstairs after finishing some school work, wearing navy blue pants and a gray long-sleeved shirt. Charlie looked up from the game and gave him a friendly smile. “That’s an interesting look.”
“Oh, shut up!” Jacob snapped and stormed into the kitchen, leaving a very confused Charlie looking to Edward for an answer.
Edward couldn’t help but chuckle. “He’s gained a little weight, and those are the only clothes that fit him. He’s a little sensitive about it.”
Charlie decided to shrug it off. “Now that you mention it, he does seem a little thicker around the middle, but it’s not that noticeable.”
Carlisle entered the room and leaned down to whisper in Billy’s ear. “Okay,” Billy nodded. “Charlie, Jacob wants to show me something. I’ll be right back.”
Charlie frowned and crossed his arms. “Fine.” He tried not to ask too many questions, but it was easy to tell that all the secrecy was really beginning to get on his nerves. They really didn’t know how much he’d figured out on his own because they never talked about it. It was better for everyone that way.
Carlisle carried Billy down the stairs where Jacob was waiting by the ultrasound machine. “Ready to see your grandchild?” Carlisle asked as he turned everything on.
“As ready as I’ll ever be,” Billy answered. He’d seen every picture, but this was the first time he’d actually been present for the check-up.
All eyes turned to the picture on the screen. The baby was a few inches long already and was beginning to look more human. The stubs had turned to arms and legs that were waving around, and the tail was completely gone. “Already a show-off, just like his father,” Jacob joked. “Showing us how well he can move his arms and legs.”
Carlisle grinned. “You know, I spent many nights praying my brother would one day have a little brat that was just like him.”
Billy laughed. “You’ve had that fantasy, too?”
“Doesn’t every parent?” Carlisle chuckled and started printing out the picture. “Everything still looks good, Jake. You’re right on schedule; starting your second trimester.”
“So only about three more months to go. I can do this . . . .” Jacob bit his lip nervously.
Carlisle patted his shoulder and handed him the picture and a towel to clean himself off. “I’ll let you two talk,” the blond vampire said before going back upstairs.
Billy turned to Jacob. “What do we need to talk about? Is something wrong?”
“Yes, but not with me,” Jacob answered. “I just . . . I might be leaving soon.”
“Leaving?” Billy frowned. “Leaving for where?”
Jacob sighed and sat up. “It’s kind of a long story. When Edward and Bella were on their honeymoon they had this maid that was from some native tribe. She kind of knew what Edward is, and caught on about Bella and her condition before they left. Her tribe has legends about half-breeds. The Cullens want to go down to Brazil and find out what these legends are so they know what to expect with Renesmee. Carlisle has done all the research he can from here, but he hasn’t found much.”
“I don’t understand—what does this have to do with you?”
Jacob’s gaze fell to the floor. “Carlisle is my doctor. I go where he goes. That, and Liam wants to go help, and I can’t make him choose between his brother and me and the baby. I told him I’d go.”
Billy put his hand on his son’s knee. “I see. Exactly how soon are you leaving?”
“Not sure. Bella wants to stay here and spend the holidays with Charlie. She also has to go visit the Volturi before they come here. They’re like vampire elders,” Jacob explained when he saw Billy’s confused expression. “They found out that Bella knew about vampires, which is against their laws. Edward had to promise to change her before too long. Well, I guess Alice sent them a wedding invitation to show them Bella and Edward were doing as they promised. The other day Bella got a letter back, and it said the Volturi couldn’t wait to see the new Mrs. Cullen in person, which means they’re planning on coming here.”
“And we don’t want that.”
“Exactly, for a lot of reasons. Everyone would be in danger, but me and Renesmee the most. So Bella wants to go to them instead, and show them she’s changed as promised.”
“And when is she going to do that?”
Jacob shrugged. “You know Bella, she tends to drag her feet. That much hasn’t changed. I just wanted to let you know.”
Billy nodded. “Thanks for warning me. I guess it’s about time for me to go. Someone will have to carry me back up the stairs.”
“I can do that,” Jacob said as he hopped off the table. “Don’t worry, I’ll be fine as long as I don’t strain myself.”
Carlisle spent the next week making travel plans. It was decided that he would go to Italy with Bella as soon as it could be arranged. Then the entire family would be going to Brazil. Jacob was a little disappointed about not getting more time with his dad, but he, too was curious about what they’d find in Brazil. They needed him to go anyway, in case the humans didn’t want to talk to the Cullen family.
Renesmee was walking now, and one afternoon they took her out to play in the falling snow. Jacob decided to sit on the porch and watch. The way she tried to catch the snowflakes made him think about playing in the snow with his own child.
He was still a little worried, even though the DNA tests Carlisle ran when he took a sample of amniotic fluid confirmed the baby was more wolf than vampire. It also confirmed that the baby was a boy. Jacob and Liam had already started talking about names, but they’d also decided they were going to keep the name they picked a surprise, and everyone else would find out when the baby was born. For now, he was still referred to as Little Spike.
Jacob felt a sudden twinge and cried out. All eyes turned to him, and he winced when, a few seconds later, it happened again. Carlisle immediately knelt down to examine him. He put his ear to Jacob’s belly, then started laughing.
“Care to share with us what’s so funny?” Jacob snapped. He was scared, and didn’t really see the humor in the situation.
Carlisle stood back up. “Little Spike is fine. He just has his first case of hiccups.”
“Oh.” Jacob frowned. “Then why does it hurt?”
Liam gently stroked Jacob’s hair. “He’s a vampire/werewolf hybrid, remember? He doesn’t know his own strength yet. We don’t even know how strong he’s going to be.”
“I know you’re a quick healer, but I’d like to do another ultrasound,” Carlisle said, motioning for Jacob to follow him inside. “I’m a little worried about internal bruising.” They stood to go back inside, and Renesmee went back to chasing snowflakes.
But everyone’s attention suddenly turned to Bella when she stopped and started scanning the tree line. They all spotted the intruder at the same time: Irina was watching them from a cliff on the mountain. “Tanya said she might be coming to offer an olive branch,” Carlisle mumbled. They waited for her to approach them, but instead she snarled and darted off.
“If she came to make peace with us, she’s obviously changed her mind,” Liam commented.
Carlisle nodded. “You and Edward see if you can catch up with her.”
The two vampires were gone in the blink of an eye, only to return hours later without Irina. Liam lowered himself onto the couch beside Jacob’s sleeping form. “I can’t believe I’m about to say this, but we couldn’t catch her. She got too much of a head start.”
Bella let out an exasperated sigh. “I know she’s upset about Laurent, but what could have possibly—oh, no!”
Jacob stirred and took in a deep breath. “What? What’s going on?”
“Irina saw Renesmee,” Bella said, frowning.
Jacob sat up, a confused expression on his face. “You think she was jealous?”
“Not exactly,” Carlisle said thoughtfully. “The Denali Clan started out as a family a lot like ours. Tanya, Kate, and Irina had the same mother, Sasha. Sasha was executed by the Volturi for creating an immortal child. It’s one of the worst crimes a vampire can commit.”
“An immortal child?” Jacob repeated the words. “You mean, like, a vampire that’s a kid?”
“Yes. Adult newborns are hard enough to control as it is. When children are changed they tend to wreak havoc because their minds are not mature. Anyway, since then the Denali Clan has followed the rules very carefully.”
“And she saw Renesmee playing in the snow,” Bella said, holding her sleeping daughter close to her chest. “Renesmee is obviously not a normal toddler. She hasn’t hurt anyone, not on purpose anyway, but Irina doesn’t know that. She spied on us instead of coming to talk to us.”
“You think she would turn you in?” Jacob asked, curling protectively around his own belly.
Before anyone could answer, Alice inhaled sharply and went rigid. “That’s exactly what she’s doing.”
“We’ll just have to make them see Renesmee isn’t a threat. She isn’t an immortal child,” Bella insisted, panic in her voice.
Liam growled. “Those assholes won’t listen; not for something like this.”
“What can we do?” Bella’s voice cracked. “I can’t just let them kill her.”
“We can fight,” Emmett said with a determined look. “Liam, you know how to kill them, don’t you?”
“Aro, Marcus, and Caius, yes,” Liam answered. “But they know that. They won’t come in a small group.”
“You can’t be giving up,” Emmett huffed.
“Who said I was? I’m just being realistic. We’d need some serious help.”
“We have friends.”
Carlisle turned to glare at Emmett. “And you really want to drag them into this?”
“I’m just saying . . . if we can gather a small army together, it might at least make them think twice.”
“For once you might be on to something.” Liam grinned. “Like Bella said, we need to get them to hear us out. Maybe if there were more of us, those bastards might not be quite so willing to jump right into a conflict.”
“It might work,” Carlisle agreed. “I’ll start by calling Eleazar.”
Liam reached for Jacob’s hand and gave it a light, reassuring squeeze. “They aren’t getting their paws on Little Spike. This is going to end, one way or another.”
