Alice and Jasper left so Alice could have some peace and quiet. Liam scooped Jacob up in his arms and carried him to bed. Liam crossed the room to shut the door, and as soon as he turned around Jacob could tell something was wrong. “There is some hope, isn’t there?” Jacob asked, a cold lump in his stomach.
“For you, yes,” Liam answered as he sat on the corner of the bed. “I want you to pack your things and go back to La Push.”
All the air went out of Jacob’s lungs at the emotional punch in the gut. “No, I can’t do that!”
“You have to,” Liam insisted. “The Volturi can’t harm you if they don’t know about you.”
Jacob couldn’t believe what he was hearing. “But . . . but you know them. We have an advantage. You said if we could get others on our side . . . .” His body was trembling and a few hot tears streaked down his cheeks.
“Yes, I know them. I’m not afraid, but I’m not stupid.” Liam reached out to caress Jacob’s rounded belly. “Even if they listened to us about Renesmee, they’d never allow such an abomination to continue existing. On that, they will not budge.”
“So you’re telling me to just run away and hide like a coward?”
“No,” Liam whispered and moved his hand to lightly trace a finger over his mate’s cheek. “I’m telling you to protect our son. There’s a difference.”
Jacob swallowed hard. “Not to me. If I lose you I’ll die anyway. That’s kind of how it works.”
Liam flashed a soft smile. “You really haven’t changed a bit. But this time you have a baby to worry about too. Maybe this is how our story was meant to end.”
“No!” Jacob shouted and he threw a pillow across the room before crumpling into a sobbing heap.
Liam lovingly stroked the werewolf’s hair, his own cold heart breaking. “Please don’t cry. If there was another way . . . .”
Jacob sniffed and wiped his eyes. “What if I just stayed out of sight? We could move to the cottage. I don’t want to put our baby in danger any more than you do, but I can’t leave you, either.”
“Actually, that might not be a bad idea,” Carlisle said from the doorway. “Tanya and clan will be here in the morning. Edward and Bella are staying here to wait for them. It’s not going to be easy to get them to understand, but Edward is going to try. Renesmee will need to be kept out of sight too. Maybe you can take her to the cottage with you. And you.” His gaze turned to Liam. “You know who you have to pay a visit to.”
“Oh, joy,” Liam sighed.
“Our lives depend on this, Liam.”
Liam shot his brother a glare. “If they didn’t, I wouldn’t be going. But I’ll help Jacob move first.”
Carlisle nodded. “The rest of us are leaving. Edward tells us Alice and Jasper aren’t coming back, so we aren’t going to waste any time. We’re splitting up and looking for allies, and we’ll send any we can find back here.”
“I should go warn Sam.” Jacob moved to get out of bed.
Liam pushed him back. “Right now you need to rest. Sleep. I’ll move your things and you can go in the morning.”
Jacob nodded and closed his eyes. He didn’t think he’d be able to sleep, but exhaustion quickly claimed him.
A blue Mustang came to a stop right outside Sam’s house bright and early the next morning. Sam emerged from the woods, not looking all that surprised to see Jacob. “If you’re after Alice, she’s long gone.”
“Alice was here?” Jacob asked as he got out of the car.
Sam nodded. “She and Jasper came to me and asked for permission to cross our land to get to the ocean. I escorted them myself.”
Jacob bit his lip and prepared himself for a difficult conversation. “How much do you know?”
“Not much. She wanted me to get a message to Bella, something about Shakespeare, and all our lives depending on no one following them. What’s this about?”
Jacob told him the short version of Irina seeing Renesmee and assuming the worst. “They want us to stay out of it. In fact, Liam wanted me to hide here.”
Sam scowled. “And here I thought they had some sense of family.”
Jacob frowned. “It’s different for them.”
“So, are you coming back?”
“No. I’m going to stay out of sight at Bella and Edward’s cottage. I couldn’t leave him.”
“Well, we can’t stay out of this. As much as I hate it, since Liam is your mate, he’s part of our family. Maybe they can abandon family, but we can’t.”
Jacob nodded. “I kind of figured. Just so you know, this place will be crawling with bloodsuckers soon. I’m sure the Cullens will explain the rules to everyone they send here, but this is important. The Denali clan are vegetarians, too, so you won’t have to worry just yet.”
Sam nodded. “Thanks for letting me know. Is that all you came for, or were you going to visit Billy?”
“Do you think he’ll be up yet?”
“Probably not, but I’m sure he’d be glad to see you. Come on, I’ll walk with you.”
Jacob was relieved that Sam still thought of him as a brother. The hostility between them was gone. They walked side by side, catching each other up on everything. Jacob couldn’t help but feel a tiny bolt of hope surge through him. Surely things didn’t have to end just yet; not after everything they’d been through.
Tanya and her clan were going to arrive any minute, leaving Edward, Bella, and Jacob on edge. Jacob had more to worry about than Edward and Bella. The Denali clan had honored the truce with the werewolves at Bella’s wedding, but how would they react to him being pregnant? They had to be told if they were going to bear witness to the fact that Renesmee was not an immortal child. Jacob was going to try to stay out of the way, but they’d still see him get bigger and bigger.
He tried not to think about it, instead diverting his attention to Renesmee. He sat with her in the kitchen while her parents waited in the living room. She’d really taken a liking to him over the past week or so, for some unexplainable reason. Jacob didn’t mind, though Edward wasn’t thrilled.
A car pulled up the driveway and Edward went out to the porch to greet the visitors. Carlisle hadn’t told them much, so they were all a little confused about what was going on. “We have a bit of a delicate problem,” Edward explained and ushered them inside. “Before I say any more, you have to promise you’ll hear us out no matter what the situation looks like.”
“I . . . of course we’ll hear you out,” Carmen said, looking a little worried.
“Okay, bring her out, Jacob.” Edward tensed.
Jacob picked Renesmee up and carried her out. The two were met with growls and hisses. “Edward, how could you!” Tanya cried out.
Edward glared at them. “You promised you’d listen to us.”
“There’s no excuse for this.” Kate shook her head. “We can have no part in this. Let’s go.”
“Of course you’re running away,” Jacob grumbled.
“You’re just as guilty as they are, dog!” Tanya hissed.
“Stop!” Edward shouted. “It’s not what you think. She’s not an immortal child. Take a minute and use your senses. You should be able to hear her heartbeat and smell her blood.”
The small group of vampires closed their eyes and inhaled deeply. “Yes, I hear two hearts in this house,” Carmen nodded. “But, how?”
“I got pregnant while I was still human,” Bella explained. “We’re still not sure how it happened, but it did. She was born, and she’s half human. She isn’t a threat to anyone.”
Renesmee, who had buried her face in Jacob’s chest during the shouting, turned and smiled. “I don’t hurt Grandpa and Billy and Uncle Jacob.”
Carmen took a bold step forward and examined the child closely. “You do have your mother’s eyes.” She backed up when Renesmee reached toward her, still a little wary.
“She’s just trying to show you something,” Bella explained. “It’s kind of her gift. I promise she won’t hurt you.”
Carmen thought about it for a second before leaning forward close enough for Renesmee to touch her cheek. She went stiff and stood with her eyes closed for several minutes. “I see,” she nodded and took a step back. “I think they’re telling the truth.”
Eleazar took his mate’s hand, but kept a wary eye on Renesmee. “I don’t know . . . .”
“Let her show you,” Edward insisted. “Please, this is very important.”
Eleazar sighed, but stepped forward. “Very well.” He, too, stiffened as he watched everything through Renesmee’s eyes. “I think I understand her now. What I still don’t understand is why Carlisle called us in such a panic.”
Bella took her daughter out of Jacob’s arms and snuggled her close. “They know.”
She didn’t need to specify who “they” were. “What? How?” Tanya asked, turning a little paler.
“Irina,” Edward answered. “She came here and saw Renesmee from a distance.”
Kate shook her head. “No, she would never—”
“Alice saw it. Irina saw Renesmee and thought what you all thought, but she never came to us for an explanation.”
“Oh, no!” Tanya’s eyes went wide. “How long?”
“About a month.”
“What do you need from us?” Carmen asked.
Edward glanced to his family before turning back to Carmen. “We need to try and get them to see what you just saw. We need witnesses. We were hoping you would stay and see for yourselves that she isn’t frozen in time. She grows, so fast we can hardly keep her in clothes.”
The clan all looked to each other. “I suppose it’s the least we could do,” Carmen answered. “We consider you family.”
“There’s one more thing you need to know,” Jacob interrupted, his knees trembling. “Renesmee is special, but not exactly one of a kind. I’m pregnant, too, and Liam is the father.”
“You?” Tanya raised an eyebrow. “But you’re not a woman.”
“I’m aware of that,” Jacob frowned. “It’s a werewolf thing; long story.”
“The Volturi would never allow a vampire/wolf mutt,” Eleazar commented.
“I’m aware of that, too,” Jacob sighed. “But all of you needed to know if you were going to stay here. When they come the plan is for me to make myself scarce.”
“Good plan,” Eleazar nodded. “Where is Liam, anyway?”
“He went to see someone. I don’t know who, but he didn’t seem too thrilled about going. When he was talking to Carlisle he said he was only going because it was important.”
“Lucian Volturi.” The name rolled right off Eleazar’s tongue.
“You’re joking!” Bella’s eyes went wide. “Why would he go to them now?”
Eleazar chuckled softly. “He isn’t. You see, Lucian is like me. He believed in keeping law and order, he just didn’t always agree with how his brothers went about it. He left his brothers to follow Liam and Carlisle, but he decided to not go back. In fact, he and Liam were mates for a time.”
“Really?” Jacob bit his lip. “Great, more coming out of the woodwork.”
“Get used to it,” Edward smirked.
Eleazar laughed. “Excellent advice. Our kind usually mate till death, but not Liam. He’s a fickle one. The only permanent relationship he’s ever had is with Carlisle. His vampire mates are fillers, I guess you could say. He drops them as soon as he meets a mortal he thinks is his soulmate. Lucian was dumped for a Powhatan.”
Jacob smiled to himself and rubbed his belly. “Same soul, different tribe. But will Lucian help us?”
Eleazar shrugged. “Perhaps. If he does, he will be a very powerful ally. His brothers may not agree, but they will listen to anything he has to say. He is still their brother, after all.”
Bella looked down at Renesmee. “Well, then, let’s hope he gives us a chance.”
