Chapter 4
I pulled out my cell phone and dialed the number Edward gave me. After several rings Bernardo finally picked up. “Yeah” his voice sounded pained and breathless. “It’s Anita. I am in front the house. Can you open the door or do I need to find my own way in?”
I really didn’t want to be shot at while trying to get to Bernardo. “I unlocked it a few minutes ago. I don’t think I could get back up again,” he gasped. “Bernardo?” It had gone deadly quiet on the other line. “Shit! Come on Cherry, we need to get in there.” As we were getting out of the car I sent my preternatural senses out to search the area for any unwelcome visitors. So far nothing, but I wasn’t about to let my guard down.
Cherry already had her medical supplies out and was waiting anxiously for me to give her the go ahead. When it comes to patching up someone she was all business. “Let me go through the door first. He knows who I am, I don’t want him shooting you.” Pulling my Browning I headed up toward the door making sure all my senses were on alert, ready for anything that might decide to visit from the shadows.
Standing to one side of the door, I tried the door and opened it slowly. Sweeping the room with my eyes I found myself in a small foyer. There was a familiar metallic smell in the air. Looking down, I noticed a small blood trail. With my back to the wall, I headed out towards the room on my right where the blood was leading. There I found what I gathered to be the living room. I found Bernardo laying on the couch wrapped up in a sheet with makeshift bandages dotting his body in random patterns. Blood was seeping from all the bandages starting to run down his chest, arms and face. I almost didn’t recognize him; he was clawed up really bad.
“Damn Bernardo. What the hell happened to you?” I asked him softly. I think I was talking more to myself than him. I made sure the room was clear and signaled for Cherry to come in. Cherry rushed to his side and began removing the bandages and started assessing his wounds. I turned and went to check the rest of the house to make sure we were alone.
By the time I returned, Cherry was looking grim. “He’s lost a lot of blood and the cuts are really deep. Good news is that he is starting to heal them, but we need to get his body temperature up to help the healing process along better. I am going to stitch him up, but I am going to need your help in case he wakes up.”
“Let’s move him into the bedroom. That will give us more room,” I told her as she picked him up. The strength that were’s possess still amazes me. Bernardo is a big boy, just slightly over 6 feet tall. She picked him up like he weighed no more that a feather. I grabbed her bag and lead the way to the bedroom I saw earlier. I was beginning to worry we might not be able to take him with us yet. Stepping aside to let Cherry move into the room and lay Bernardo down on the bed. She began cleaning the wounds, making sure there wasn’t any debris in them before she stitched them closed. I moved to the other side of the bed and climbed up to be ready to restrain him if necessary. Cherry unwrapped the sheet to make sure there weren’t any other wounds on his body. “OH MY!” Cherry exclaimed. I glanced to look at what she was looking at. My face turned beet red when I noticed what she was looking at. I’d seen him before in all his glory when we were in New Mexico as Edward’s back ups, but to see him again was still embarrassing.
Cherry seem to snap out of it and continued to make sure there were no more claw wounds that would need to be stitched. Satisfied that everything below his waist was ok she covered him back up with the sheet and began preparations to stitch him up.
I sat on the bed and really looked at him for the first time since arriving. Bernardo’s beautiful brown skin was a sickly pale color from the shock and loss of blood. There was a shallow claw mark across his right cheek traveling down to his dimpled chin. Deep claw marks ravaged his right arm and right side of his chest. I knew that he was left-handed so he would protect the left side of his body with his right. His stomach and chest bore some claw marks as well. The ones on his chest seem deeper than the ones on his stomach. Not too bad from what I could tell, but enough to bleed profusely. Most of the left side of his upper body only bore shallow cuts. His gorgeous waist length black hair was a mess, tangled with what look to be blood and dirt. I knew Bernardo put up one hell of a fight. More than likely whoever did this to him was dead; or will be.
Bernardo didn’t wake up until after Cherry finished sewing up the wounds on his right arm and face. She must have given him some painkillers to keep him out while she worked. He tried to sit up and make a grab for Cherry. I scrambled to hold him down and to make sure he saw me. “Bernardo! It’s Anita! Stay still or we will have to do this all over again.” I yelled while trying to hold him down without tearing the stitches myself. Bernardo turned to the sound of my voice and I saw recognition in his eyes. His body began to relax. He was just staring at me with unreadable eyes. “Let Cherry finish stitching you up.” He gave a brief nod and closed his eyes.
“I’m almost done.” Cherry said after what felt like hours. “Do you think we could move him?” I asked as I was looking down at Bernardo with a frown. “I think that will be ok. I will sit in the back with him to keep an eye on him. Touch from another shifter should help keep him calm” she said picking up her supplies and repacking her bag. While she did that I searched the room and found a bag with an assortment of guns and knives. Packing what I could, I went out to my Jeep and put his bags in the back and Cherry’s medical bag in the backseat just in case she might need it.
When I got back into the room, Cherry was wrapping Bernardo in a blanket. I pulled out my cell phone and dialed Edward’s number. “I got him,” I said him before he could say anything. “Do you have anyone that can clean up this mess?”
“Yeah, I will have someone over there after you have gone” he said and disconnected. Sighing, I hung up the phone. I guess I don’t know anyone with good phone manners.
“He was asking for you,” Cherry said. “He said it was important” I climbed back onto the bed and Bernardo opened his eyes. “After you….someone betrayed you…wanting to take over your leopards….guess I asked too many questions….” He said brokenly and then passed out. Yeah…I pissed off Fate.
Cherry picked him up and headed towards the car. After getting him settled in the back I started the drive back trying to figure out who betrayed me and wanted my leopards. Welcome to my life.
