Chapter 4
Arriving For Work
Angus was riding shotgun beside me with his head sticking out the window. I didn’t want to leave him by his self again so I decided to let him tag along. His flabby jaws were being pulled back by the wind so hard that you’d swear I was driving at ten G’s.t het he didn’t seem to mind at all.
Thankfully all the rain had subsided so my window washers weren’t flipping back and forth. I needed all the concentration I could get to find the house. The address took me towards the outskirts of Baltimore. But after a few wrong turns I finally found the place….and couldn’t believe my eyes.
A gray stone wall surrounded the entire area, yet in the front were a pair of metal gates. Through them you could catch a glimpse of the building. But building seemed too much of an understatement. Masterpiece was more like it. The building looked almost like any other, with stone walls and gorgeous glass windows that were scattered sparsely along its sides, that is until you got to the roof. Instead of being flat across or peaking it turned into a giant dome shape.
The driveway ran for quite a long time until it reached the front of the place. It then turned in a full circle, wrapping around a tall water fountain in front before connecting back to the driveway in a big loop. Giant stone steps were set in the center, reaching all the way up to an immaculate set of doors. From behind the gate I couldn’t tell what it was made of. Possibly metal. Adorning the building’s walls , were stone gargoyles, perched quietly as if waiting for a sign to move. Some with long out stretched wings and some without. A few with protruding beaks some with muzzles. But that was as much as my eyes could see from this far back. Though I had to hand it to myself. Even seeing the gargoyles from all the way behind the gate was an amazing feat. But I assume that the lights hidden around the base of the water fountain that shone on the front of the building had something to do with it.
I pulled up to the gate, wondering how I was going to get past it and just where in the hell I was. I could see Anus growing antsy out the corner of my eye. His head was still sticking out the window and he was switching his weight over to his left side then to his right, back and forth. As if all he wanted to do was jump out the window. Either he liked this place and wanted to run to it, or the place scared the hell out of him and he wanted to high tail it home. I threw the car in park.
“Hey boy.” Angus turned his head to look at me. I reached out and stroked his head. He was taller than I was when sitting. But since I’m only about 5’2 I guess that isn’t really hard to do. He let out a soft, almost silent whine. He wanted out of the car badly. But he knew that jumping out would be defying me. Angus was loyal, so loyal that it was almost abnormal. But my father and me had raised him since he was born so I figure that had something to do with it. “Yeah I have a bad feeling about this too.” I said, taking a firm grasp on the door handle. “But don’t worry.”
I stepped out of the car with the hlighlights still on and the motor still running. Couldn’t go anywhere just yet. I had a gate to get past. The gate looked to be made of steel. The headlights made it shine and shimmer. But it was more than likely fake. I put my small hands around the bars and shook it. Nope. It was real. The gate barely even budged when I shook it. After I took my hands away from the gate I began to wonder about what would have happened if the bars had been electrified. Fine time to think about it.
“Hello?”
The voice came out of nowhere and scared me so badly that I jumped about three feet and instinctively shoved my hand in my purse, feeling for that hard, cool metal. I spun around, and around, looking for the origin of the voice. Angus began to bark loud, thunderous barks. He heard it but couldn’t see it either. I heard the voice again. It was female. Soft and sultry. Amazing how much you could tell about a person from them saying only one word.
Slowly the panic bego fao fade. There was an intercom system on one if the pillars next to the gate. That was where it was coming from all along. I was starting to feel pretty damn foolish. I eased my hand away from the purse.
“Um hello, I’m Alic-“ the woman didn’t even let me finish speaking.
“Hello Alicia Johnston. The Master has been expecting you.” She was as polite as ever but her manners weren’t what had caught my attention.
Master? I looked back at the structure, taking in its full glory and beauty. Could this really be one of the Master of Baltimore’s homes, or should I say buildings. No one really knows the resting-places of Master Vampires. They are always sure to keep that a secret in case someone feels the need to take their life. HAV or vampires wanting to take his or her place are always likely candidates for that. Who ever said the life of a Master vampire is all fun and games lied. I wouldn’t take on that title for anything in the world. There’s just always someone hiding in the shadows wanting to take you out.
“Excuse me, but when you say Master…do you mean-“ I was startled again by the sound of the gate sliding open. It was being done from the inside. Electric powered gates. Interesting. Though no matter how much I was impressed an eerie sensation went up my spine.
“Just follow the road up to the front.” She began again in the same polite manner. “Someone will be there to greet you.”
I stood, in the headlights of my car, staring at the work of art that I would soon enter. It held such an uncanny beauty that it bordered in-between charming and sinister. What a perfect place for a master vampire. A soft wind blew across my skin. I rubbed my arms and then climbed back into the Land Rover. Angus pushed his nose up against my shoulder, as if trying to tell me something, but my eyes and mind were fixated on the job in front of me. Was I indeed going to be meeting the master vampire tonight? Only one way to find out.
