Night Moves, part four.
He was supposed to have had a meeting with Richard tonight. He called to cancel the meeting. Ethan tried to persuade him into rescheduling, but he said he wasn’t available. Anita laughed when she found out. It just made Ethan think even less of her.
Instead of being in his office, he was standing in the entrance of Jean-Claude’s living room at the Circus. Ethan still didn’t know where or what it was. He slept during the ride to the place; he wasn’t used to these late hours. Jason was there to greet him. He was wearing something that looked as though it came out of an S and M – R – Us catalog. His top was completely see through, allowing full view of his impressive upper physique. The pants were black vinyl, they looked as if he had to paint them on they were so fitting.
“Hello, Dr. Jones.” His usual charming smile was perfectly in place. He moved behind him, stood a little too close, still smiling. “Would you like me to take your coat?”
He was too charming, and too confident, for his own good. “Yes, thank you.” He noticed that there were fresh bite marks on his throat. He didn’t know for sure, and it was probably his imagination, but they seemed to be healing as he was looking at them. Jason did say that he was a werewolf, and it only seemed logical for a werewolf to be able to heal faster than humans, of course he didn’t know anything about it. When he met with Jason last night, it was the first time that he ever saw a werewolf, or shapeshifter, at least that was what he always thought. Vampires looked a little different from humans, Ethan knew that much, they had that surreal beauty about them, and a presence of power that no human could ever have. But Jason was different; Ethan assumed he was human because that was what he seemed like.
“Jean-Claude is getting dressed right now. He asked me to play watch dog over you.” His laugh was loud, causing Ethan to shiver just a little from the vibration it caused. Jason had put up his coat and escorted him further into the room. “Make yourself comfortable, Doctor.” The way he said Doctor was a little to sexual for Ethan, but Jason was a flirt and he would just have to get used to it. It wasn’t as though Jason wasn’t attractive, because he was. He was very attractive. He was a client, though, and Ethan didn’t mix business with pleasure. He knew some fellow colleagues who have done that, mixed business with pleasure, and it ended up biting them in the ass, roughly speaking.
Ethan took the liberty to notice the room, avoiding the look that Jason was sending his way. Black and silver drapes were hung through out the room, covering the majority of the room actually. He remembered that the hallway looked like the inside of a dungeon, which explains the drapes. It was obvious that Jean-Claude wanted to create some relative ambience in hopes of softening up the room.
The only area that didn’t have drapes covering it was the fireplace. It was painted white and Ethan couldn’t imagine needing a fire in here, because it was already a little too warm for comfort. The moment he looked up he could feel his body freeze instantly. There was a painting above the mantle of the fireplace. It was of three people; no they were too pretty to be human. He noticed the one who looked like Jean-Claude first, maybe it was him, but he looked different somehow, younger. There was woman sitting beside him. She must have been human, she didn’t have the vampire look to her, she wasn’t pretty enough. Then Ethan looked at the blonde who was standing next to her. No, blonde wasn’t quite the color of his hair, it was more golden like metallic paint. His skin was slightly darker than Jean-Claude’s. He was beautiful beyond words. He wasn’t beautiful like Jean-Claude. Jean-Claude was more androgynous looking, almost pretty. The other man, or vampire, had a sharper line to the jaw, allowing him to be handsome instead of androgynous. Ethan couldn’t take his eyes off of the painting, off of him.
“You do like men after all.” It was Jason’s voice, for a moment Ethan thought he was alone in the room. He could feel Jason walking to him to get closer. As though he had eyes in the back of his head, he could see Jason smiling that smile of his, but he didn’t care. Ethan still couldn’t look away from the painting, done in what looked like the 1700s. Was Jean-Claude really that old?
His voice came out thick, thicker than what he wanted it to be, and slightly hoarse, “What makes you say that?”
“The way you’re looking at the painting, specifically Asher.” Jason let out another laugh. “Don’t be fooled by his prettiness, he isn’t going to crack easily in your sessions.”
The vampire was Asher? That was Asher? Now he understood Jason when he said that he wouldn’t mind experimenting with Asher. “Is he as old as Jean-Claude?” It was an odd question, he didn’t even realize that he was thinking it, and it surprised him when it came out of his mouth. His voice still sounded hoarse and thick, which was surprising as well. Ethan knew that he couldn’t hide this from Jason; he was still staring at the painting even.
“He’s older.” Ethan turned to look at him, briefly, but enough to catch the smirk on the other’s face.
“How much older?”
“I don’t know, actually.” Jason started grinning, but it wasn’t his normal flirtatious grin. It was too non-innocent looking to be a lovely grin, there was something behind it and Ethan couldn’t tell what it was. “If I did know, I wouldn’t tell you anyways,” his flirtatious grin quickly came back in place.
“Why not?”
“Because it’s going to be amusing when you try to get any information out of Asher.” He laughed again, it was still the innocent, with a touch of seduction, laughter that he did before. He wasn’t jealous was he?
“Jason.” Both of them turned around to look at Jean-Claude. He was wearing another puffy shirt, much like the one he wore the night that they met, and coincidentally the one in the painting. The others were white, but this one was red, crimson red. He had a slight color to his cheeks; Ethan didn’t know that vampires were even capable of being anything but pale.
Jason didn’t reply, instead he just left, and not without sending Ethan a seductive look first, though. Jean-Claude laughed when they were completely alone. It sent chills down his skin; he didn’t need to look to see if he had Goosebumps, he knew that they were there. “Please sit, Doctor.” Ethan wondered if all vampires had that same voice as he did. The type of voice that would make anyone do anything for that person, just as long as they continued to speak to them. It was slightly unnerving and comforting at the same time.
Ethan did as he said and sat in the chair beside the one that he was sitting in. The fabric was velvet, much like the velvet on his sofa, but it was slicker, softer. He automatically could tell that it was more expensive. “You seem troubled, Doctor. Is there anything wrong?” Ethan glanced at the painting one more time and Jean-Claude must have noticed, “We were a ménage trios.”
Ethan couldn’t do anything but stare at him. “You were? You’re not anymore?”
Jean-Claude’s eyes were blank, his face was expressionless. He was trying to hide his true emotions, Ethan had seen it before on the majority of his clients, but they were never as good as he was. “No. She died.”
“Who was she?” Ethan noticed that Jean-Claude looked away, it was clear that the subject was painful, but he couldn’t help but be intrigued. Granted that most of the fascination was due to his obvious attraction to Asher, but it was still intriguing on its own, even if Asher hadn’t looked the way he looked.
Jean-Claude briefly looked at the painting, and then focused his attention back to Ethan. Ethan knew that he caught him staring at the painting, as well, because he hadn’t switched his focus quick enough to meet back with Jean-Claude’s. “We were together for twenty years, and then news had arrived of my mother dying. I went to her and while I was gone Christian soldiers had taken both Julianna and Asher. They burned Julianna at the stake, thinking that she was a witch.”
“What happened to Asher?”
“I was too late to save Julianna, but I managed to get to Asher in time. He would say otherwise.” Jean-Claude was no longer looking at Ethan; instead he focused on his sleeves. He pretended to flick off imaginary hair from his shirt; his voice wasn’t as seductive as it usually was, slightly hesitant instead. Jean-Claude still masked his true emotions very well, though. If it hadn’t of been for his movements, Ethan would of thought him dead. He was dead, but undead. Ethan decided not to think about vampire… stuff. He was more interested in the story, what had happened to Asher. “Asher blamed me for Julianna’s death. He still does and truthfully so do I.”
“He’s supposed to be your second, though?” Jean-Claude looked up then, confused at how Ethan knew that bit of information. He decided to answer it for him, “Jason told me.”
Jean-Claude gave a slight nod of his head, “Yes, he is.”
Before Ethan could ask why, Anita came bursting through the room. He looked up at her, she was mentally struggling with something, but he couldn’t tell what it was. Jean-Claude stood, hovering over him, “I’m sorry, Doctor, but we are going to have to cut this session short.” Anita was hugging herself now, frightened about something, but what? Jean-Claude had his hand on his arm, pulling him across the room, not hurting him just escorting him. “I will see you tomorrow night.” Then the door to the living room was shut in front of him.
What was that? What was it even about?
