The green eyes never left the figure gracefully playing the piano while a gloved hand pressed futilely against the glass. A hissed curse left his lips.
What was that? Sarah paused in her practice, positive she had heard something. She strained her ears, trying to pick up the sound again.
His head snapped up as the piano stopped. She heard me.
Mrs. Annette’s right, I have spent too much time alone. She shook her head at her own silliness, and returned to her music.
He tried to slow his erratic breathing. It was as if he was constantly on the opposite side of an observation panel. Wherever and whenever the front panel of the mirror had traveled, he had been able to see and hear, never to be seen or heard. Until now… or had he imagined it? One way to find out…
Cracking her knuckles again, Sarah stretched and almost jumped out of her skin as she heard the whisper of her name.
He smiled…it always was fun to be the opera ghost.
Sarah looked around again before standing and cautiously moving to look out the windows. It had gotten darker with the rain and approaching evening, but nothing else seemed out of the ordinary.
“That’s it…I am officially nuts!” She turned and spoke to her piano. “Probably from spending to much time with you instead of living, breathing people.” She closed the lid over the keys. “Time to relax. I am going to get in my comfy clothes and enjoy my movies.”
Sarah imagined most folks would think she was crazy talking to herself. You did it too Nana, she thought as she headed upstairs.
Erik watched as she crossed in front of him and then disappeared from his view. He scanned the room in front of him, which was quite a change from the auction house and antique store that had been his most recent views. Those places were a general exercise in boredom.
This room was tastefully appointed, with the large piano taking up much of the room to the left of the fireplace. A small couch was set up directly in front of the mirror. It and the chair that joined it were facing the fireplace which had a screened object hung on the wall above it. Erik could see books by the dozens lining the shelves on either side of the fireplace. A small table and chairs were in front of another set of large windows.
The stairs that Sarah had ascended were not in his view, and he wondered if she was going to return to this room to enjoy…what was it she called it? Her movies.
Why do you even bother? A loud shrieking sound interrupted his morose train of thought. He heard her run back down the stairs. The sound stopped and was replaced by her voice.
“Hello?”
Erik had no idea who she could be talking to, he had heard no one enter. Without any qualms he continued listening to her speak.
“Hey Kylie…yeah doing fine. No. That doesn’t start until fall. No I’m not bored, not a bit. Yeah well…” Erik heard her chuckle accompanied by some other noise.
“Whoops hang on…sorry I almost dropped the phone. Trying to make some popcorn. So how’ve you been?” Erik could hear her moving around the other room.
“Good to hear, girl. It’s about time. Anyway I got big plans for tonight too…yeah called popcorn and two old favorites.” She laughed again. “Yeah I know…super exciting, but don’t let me keep you. I know how long it takes you to get ready for anything. Sure I’ll catch up with you soon. Email me all the juicy details. Ok, ok. Later, girl. Bye.”
Sarah sat the phone back in its place and grabbed a big bowl out of the cabinet. Dumping the popcorn into the bowl, she reached in to the fridge and grabbed a cold bottle of Leinenkugels and then headed back into the living room.
Erik’s jaw dropped when he saw Sarah come back into the room. He had become accustomed to seeing strange fashions but what she wore now was unlike anything he had seen before.
Gone were the khaki pants and blue shirt she had been wearing. The yellow pants she had replaced them with stopped at mid thigh, and the matching top had no sleeves. Erik felt a tightening in his groin at the sight of so much smooth exposed skin. He gritted his teeth, trying to force his body to ignore the sight.
Why keep looking you fool? Just turn around… go back to your hole in the ground. You can’t ever have that. Why torture yourself some more? A groan escaped his lips as he saw her sit and stretch out on the couch, but this one remained unheard by her as a clap of thunder rumbled.
“Looks like the weatherman got it right for once, piano.” Sarah popped open the bottle as she turned the TV on and started up Labyrinth.
Erik’s attention on Sarah was momentarily distracted by the visuals displayed on the screen. For the next ninety minutes he alternated between watching her and the events on the screen.
Sarah got up and left the room, returning with another bottle in her hand. Erik watched as she moved to a device located in the bookcase and removed a thin silver plate from it, replacing it with another. His body tightened again as she stretched back onto the couch, propping her legs onto the table in front of it.
It’s been ages since I watched this, Sarah thought as the opening credits for Heathers came up on the screen. She munched some popcorn and took another sip, listening to another, louder rumble of thunder. And a good night to be in if I do say so myself.
Erik continued to watch Sarah unable to move from his place behind the mirror, unable to understand how the fates could be so cruel again.
As if this face isn’t enough… he sighed. To see such beauty and never have a chance.
He could see her eyelids getting heavy as she attempted to keep watching the screen. Minutes later the battle was lost, and Erik feasted his eyes upon her sleeping form. Incapable of resisting, he began to quietly sing a whispering melody and was rewarded when he saw Sarah relax more deeply into the couch.

Through the haze of a hypnotic melody Sarah walked outside. The rain continued to sound on the roof, but did not drown out the other music. She startled slightly as gloved hands lightly caressed her shoulders. Sarah grabbed the railing of the porch at the feel of lips nibbling the back of her neck as the hands ran down her arms and moved to encircle her waist. Looking down at the hands upon her, she placed her own on them, and moved them up to caress her breasts through her shirt. She moaned as the hands teased her nipples into hardness.
Erik paused his music at the sound of her moan. She must be dreaming, he thought as he saw her arch in her sleep. Oh to be in them with you…
The lips moved to the sensitive flesh behind Sarah’s ear, the breath hot upon her skin. She closed her eyes at the delicious sensation pouring through her, and moaned again as her shirt was pulled over her head. Funny that it’s pouring rain and I’m not cold…oh no… she thought as the lips trailed nipping kisses down her back. No I am burning up. She turned around and let the insistent lips move up, over her belly, kissing her navel lightly, before moving higher. Fire raced through her when those lips closed over one tight nipple, laving it with tongue, teasing it with teeth. Sarah’s hands dug into dark hair, arching into the magic that was this mouth.
Erik watched in disbelief as Sarah’s own hand moved to caress herself. Dear God, I should have left. He put both hands upon the mirror, desperately wishing for some way into her world.
At that moment there was a deafening crash, the house shuddered, and the rooms went dark as the electrical charge coursed through.
His hands went through the mirror. Erik pulled back, unsure as to what had happened and then realized his opportunity and stepped though.
Sarah bolted upright in the pitch black darkness, her heart racing. What a dream…damn. She calmed as she heard another thunderclap and realized it was just the storm.
“You’re ok, you’re ok.” She moved carefully, but cursed as she bumped her shin in the coffee table. She moved around it to head to the flashlight in the kitchen.
Erik silently moved behind her, sure he was out of his mind for what he was about to do. Closing in, he soundlessly reached around her and covered her mouth with his gloved hand. His arms tightened around her as she instantly began to struggle.
“Do not be afraid, Sarah. I will not harm you.”
Sarah froze in disbelief. It was the voice…the one that had just been in her dreams.
