Chapter Four: Settling In
Sirius stood at the window of their room, looking out upon the city while Remus tucked Harry into bed. Jason had been kind enough to point out all the amenities of the room, including the private bath before leaving to bring the pair some food up from the kitchen. The young werewolf had been very polite and it was obvious he was full of questions. “So what do you think Siri?” He turned to the sound of his mate's question. Remus was perched on the corner of the large bed, his shoes and socks were off and the top three buttons of his shirt open.
“Of Jean-Claude? He seems nice enough. I can see why you and he stayed friends,” the Animagus wigged his eyebrows playfully. “Anita and Jason seem okay as well,” he strode over and sat down beside Remus. “Asher is an enigma. Its obvious he's got his secrets and scars, but I don't think we have anything to worry about from him. That giant hulking idiot on the other hand.”
“Siri!” Remus let out a small chuckle under his breath. He didn't begrudge his mate the poor opinion that he held in regards to the local pack's Ulfric. “He's simply upset over having a new werewolf in his territory. Completely understandable.”
“Remus is your brain plugged in? That jerk has a stick the size of the Whomping Willow up his arse. He is not just going to come around and warm up to the idea of us sticking around.” Sirius didn't add the fact he was fairly sure that Richard disapproved of their little ménage. Which considering what Remus had told him about Jean-Claude and his group was odd. Then again they had gone to school with the king of self loathing, so spotting it in others was not all that hard to do.
“Honestly Siri, you worry to much. Even if he doesn't come to accept my being here, its not as if Jean-Claude or even Anita will let him do anything about it.” Remus ran his hand through the other man's lanky locks.
Sirius just nodded, though he wasn't convinced. Werewolf culture was not that much different in the UK, however they had grown up in the wizarding world, a completely different realm in an of itself. The US Ministry had been kind enough to give them the run down of how the shifter communities functioned there. It had been a lot to take in, especially for Remus who had the option of being open about what he was. Choosing to settle in St. Louis meant making nice with the local pack, which was all both planned on doing. Remus has said more than once that Harry and he were all the pack that the werewolf needed.
There was a soft knock on the door just before it opened and Jason came in with a plate weighted down with food. “As promised.”
“Thank you Jason,” Remus was the first to his feet to take the plate from him while the other werewolf leaned out of the door to grab two bottles of water. “You didn't have to we could have easily magiced up something to eat.”
“True, but its not often Jean-Claude expects me to play host and it would look better on my master if I at least pretend I wasn't raised by wolves.” The blonde shot Sirius a teasing smirk. “Besides it gives me an excuse to ask you guys more questions before you get swamped by everyone else.” He handed the water off to Sirius who took them with a nod.
“Thanks. So what did you want to know?” Sirius joined Remus at the table, setting one of the water bottles in front of him.
“Anything. Everything. I mean the most I know about magic and what not is what I've learned since getting involved with the vampires and Anita, but I am fairly sure for you guys its very different from what I know.”
Sirius nodded while Remus pulled his wand out. “For the most part everyone uses spells, but once you've been using magic and focusing you can cast the particular spell without words.” Remus gave a subtle flick of his wrist and a second plate appeared in front of Sirius who immediately set to dividing the food between them. “Then you have potions which obviously don't need a spoken spell, and Sirius' ability as an Animagus.”
“Yeah I was wondering about that. I know you guys said it came about because of Remus being a lukoi, but what does that even mean?”
Taking a sip of water Sirius sat back with a grin, “Well when we were young or rather younger, no one actually knew about Remus at first. Myself, our friend James; Harry's father, and another friend found out. We were best mates after all so the idea of exposing him never entered our minds. Thing was we couldn't keep an eye on Remus when he shifted. Well not safely, so we broke a few rules.”
“A lot of rules actually. Animagi have to be registered, not to mention it was very advanced magic for our age.”
Jason nodded, though the look on his face said it was a lot to take in and that it would be awhile before it all made sense. “Well one thing I can say is you've already made quite an impression. Richard hasn't gotten that pissed off in awhile. “
Remus was in the middle of lifting a sandwich to his mouth when he asked “So I take it that its fairly common for him to react that way to new comers?”
“You could say that. Change and Richard don't really go well together. Honestly you three were just icing on the cake. He's been just generally upset with anything that moves.” Jason shrugged, “He's my Ulfric though and my friend so I can't really come down to hard on him.” He looked back towards Harry's sleeping form. “He's also very much a straight laced boyscout. You two certainly look old enough to know better. Harry not so much.”
Sirius and Remus looked at each other and smiled, “That one of the things we took pride in about our boy. Harry's been through so much, we all have, but it hadn't made him old. Hadn't really worn away at him body and spirit. Us on the other hand,” Remus gestured to himself and Sirius, “It took its toll on us both.” Sirius reached out and laid his hand over Remus'. “We've managed to keep ourselves sane though. Now we just have to hope Harry wakes up soon.”
“He will Siri. He has to. Harry more than anyone has earned the right to a normal life at this point. And if he doesn't I swear I will dig Voldemort back up and kill him again.”
Jason watched the pair with a wistful look upon his face. He knew that sort of love and devotion from watching Anita with the other men in her life. The werewolf also knew sooner or later h would find that for himself. “I should finish letting you two get settled in. If you need anything I am just a few doors down. I am sure Jean-Claude will check in on you two soon enough anyways.”
They both turned and nodded, “Thank you again for the food Jason.” Both Remus and Sirius got up to shake his hand. Jason gave them a small nod and left the room. The pair sat back down and returned to their food, though it only filled their stomachs. The few personal effects they would need would be arriving soon enough by courier. For the time being they would stay at the Circus until they found a home they liked. After the food was gone, the couple joined their sleeping mat in the bed. Sirius on the left, Remus on the right. Their hands met over Harry, as if to shield him even further from whatever threat that could harm him again.
///
Later that evening Jean-Claude strolled from his office, his intent to check in on his guests. The Master of the City had known what to expect from his wolf, when h found out about Remus' arrival. Some would speculate that Jean-Claude had done this provoke, Richard. It was far from the truth. The simple truth was that in their short time together Remus and Jean-Claude had become good friends and even after the wolf had returned to his own time. The vampire knew what it was like to have the burning need to protect those one loved and after a long talk with Anita, his human servant as well. The same would not be said of Richard. No Richard would be his usual difficult self, which meant that there would be a fight. A fight that the Ulfric would likely loose.
The circus was abuzz with the news of their new temporary residents. He had done his best to make sure they were not going to be hounded by questions and inquiries, but even Jean-Claude knew that it would happen. As h turned the corner, Jean-Claude was very surprised to see Asher standing at the door of Remus and Sirius' room. “Asher?”
The blonde vampire looked from the door towards him. Their blues yes met for less than a second before his lover and second in command turned and left. That was unexpected, but did not move him to worry. It was clear Asher was fascinated by the pair, given the fact neither had taken real notice of his scars. No Asher's acceptance of the lick from Sirius in his other form had been shocking than anything. Those scars had long been a source of ridicule, or in Jean-Claude's place; guilt. Anita had been the first to openly touch the wounds and not shy away. It seemed she would not be the last.
When he stood in front of the door, his keen hearing told the vampire that the pair were asleep. His own inquires could wait until the next evening. Jean-Claude turned on a booted heel and headed for his own rooms. Things were certainly going to be interesting from here on out.
a/n: sorry for the shortness of this chapter. Next one will be longer as Harry will be waking up.
