Chapter 4
Waking Up
I don’t know when I realized that I wasn’t asleep. I only realized that I was thirsty beyond all belief. I slowly forced myself to sit up and look around the bright room. At least the room looked bright. The lights were off and it was night out, but I could see clearly.
How was I sane? How could I think of anything but blood? I didn’t know if that was normal but the stories I had heard and the visions I had witnessed all had crazy newborn vampires that needed blood. I hungered but it wasn’t that strong of a pull. I stretched and stood, leaving the room behind me and standing still when I saw the group of vampires sitting in the living room. They looked ready to spring if they needed to.
“It’s okay. I…still have all of my mental facilities…I think.”
I blinked a few times.
“Yep, pretty sure I’m sane.”
They looked to Edward and he nodded.
“He seems very put together for a newborn.”
They all suddenly froze and I frowned, not sure why until the scent hit my nose, and the sound of a heartbeat hit my ears. If my stomach could growl, it would have, but other than that, I felt fine.
Then Bella entered the room.
And I still felt fine. She froze when she saw me and I flashed her a grin with my new sharper teeth.
“Hello Bella. How has Jacob been these past few days?”
Bella blinked a few times but answered me.
“He’s worried about you. He sees you as his brother. This is killing him, he doesn’t want to wait years to see you, he’s gonna try something stupid I think.”
“Bella, what you did was stupid, being the first human to come here since I was turned. And I’m not at your throat now am I? class=GramE>Nope, absolutely calm in fact. Just a bit hungry and not even for you.”
My eyes had traveled from Bella’s form to look out the window where a deer was grazing nearby. I frowned softly as I forced my feet to stay still, to keep from running outside and ripping the poor thing apart. I turned back to Bella and smiled softly.
“See, absolutely fine Bella.”
Edward burst into laughter and I frowned.
“Bella, I think it would be best if you left for just now. He wants so badly to attack that deer outside but he’s afraid to gross you out.”
If I could blush, then I would have. But being a vampire meant that I couldn’t exactly blush anymore. I sighed softly and rubbed the back of my head.
“Way to go Edward, make her think I’m some sort of freak why don’t you.”
Bella laughed nervously.
“I’m sorry, I really shouldn’t have come, I didn’t even think…”
I was at her side in an instant and it shocked even me, though I didn’t show it. I took her hands and looked deep into her eyes.
“Tell Jacob that I’m fine, and Billy to. Tell them that I’ll be my old self soon enough.” I smiled softly. “And let them know that I miss them. They are still my family after all.”
Bella smiled as well and I let go of her hands and watched her leave. I froze as I felt another vision coming.
“Daddy!”style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>
I looked down at the child with short black hair and tan skin.
“How was your hunting trip daddy!? Did you catch any bears?!”
I smiled softly down at the little child.
“No little one, but I did take down a mountain lion. How is your father doing?”
The little boy giggled.
“Papa has been missing you sooooo much. At night he goes out in the forest and howls hoping that you will get home faster.”
I smiled softly and picked the boy up, carrying him into our home.
Edward looked at me curiously.
“That doesn’t make sense Asher. How could you possibly have a child, and with another man? A…wolf…”
I frowned, rubbing the back of my head.
“Maybe…maybe the child was adopted, or…maybe the other had the child with someone but they saw me as their father. I don’t know but…suddenly…I want that boy…I want to meet him.”
I rubbed the back of my head and frowned, confused. Then my stomach lurched.
“Can someone take me hunting…please?”
Emmet and Jasper laughed before I found myself thrown over someone’s shoulder. I growled but let them carry me, knowing that it was more for the safety of others than anything else.
My first meal wasn’t venison. Instead it was something a bit more…interesting. As if on par with my vision, my first meal was mountain lion, and as the blood poured into my mouth, I felt a sense of peace flow through me. I pulled away after the thing was dead, breathing hard and shaking a bit with the new warmth that the blood pumped into me.
Suddenly I felt something inside of me twist.
“Can I go see Jacob? Please?”
Jasper and Emmett looked between one and another and I yelped as I was pulled over Emmett’s shoulder again.
“When we get home, yes, you can see him. But you’ll have to call him; you can’t go down to La Push like you usually do. It’s too dangerous. You may be fine around one or two people but around more…it may not work so well.”
A bright smile came to my face and I kissed Emmett’s neck before kissing Emmett’s cheek. They scowled and I laughed happily.
“Thank you so much!”
We made it back to the mansion quickly, and I ran to the nearest phone, dialing almost too fast. When there was an answer, I couldn’t help but smile.
“Hello?”
“Hey Uncle Billy, it’s me!”
There was silence for a moment.
“Asher? How? How are you so sane already?”
“One of the many mysteries of this world.”
“Jake will be so happy to hear about this, he has been class=GramE>wanting to see you since the moment the Cullen’s took you to their place.”
I smiled softly. “Can you send him over? I…can’t exactly go to La Push.”
“Sure, he’ll…”
I heard the door slam and smiled.
“Be there very soon.”
“Thank you Uncle Billy.”
“So when can I see me godson again.”
I looked up at the vampires around me and frowned.
“I’ll ask the others and let you know when it’s safe enough for me to see you again.”
A howl sounded in the distance and I smiled, feeling my stomach flutter, though I didn’t quite know why.
“Jacob is almost here, I’ll call you again soon Uncle B.”
I heard a soft laugh from the other side of the line.
“Good bye Asher, I’ll speak with you soon.”
The door burst open and Jacob stood there in only a pair of shorts. Jacob froze, and so did I as I saw the emotions passing over his features. If my heart could still beat, then it would be beating much higher than normal.
“J…Jacob?”
Jacob ran to me and had his arms wrapped around me. I closed my eyes as his warmth covered my too cold skin. I shivered lightly and sniffed Jacob’s neck. He smelled so good, like the forest and rain.
I couldn’t see anyone else, couldn’t hear anyone else, I could hear only the fast beating of his heart and his erratic breathing, I could smell only his skin, feel only his warmth.
“Asher…”
I shivered at his voice, the sound was so perfect.
“Yes Jacob?”
“I…I think I just imprinted on you.”
My eyes widened and I froze.
“Wouldn’t that have happened when we first met?”
But I knew it was true, that child from my vision looked so much like Jacob. I pulled away slowly and Jacob had a bright smile on his face, I couldn’t stop a smile from spreading to my own.
“A vampire and a werewolf, who would have thought it…”
Several people cleared their throats at the same time and we jumped apart. Jacob looked a bit out of place and I rubbed the back of my neck before Esme came over to me with wide eyes.
“Congratulations Asher, already you have found your life mate.”
I would have blushed bright red if I was able, but I was not, and then I froze, another vision hitting me, Alice had stiffened in the same moment.
“Ash? What is it?”
Alice and I looked at one another, before I turned to Jacob to answer his question.
“The Volturi had changed their minds, they are coming now, and they will be here in just a few days. Someone…another vampire…found out about me, and they are coming for me.”
“Victoria.” Edward growled the name and went for the door, more than likely going to collect Bella so that he could keep her safe.
I was shaking as I sat down on the couch, unable to move, to frightened that I would be stolen away from Jacob, that I would lose him.
“I won’t let them touch you Asher. You have my word.”
I closed my eyes.
“I don’t want you to get hurt Jacob. Don’t…don’t do anything stupid. Promise me you won’t.”
I looked up at him and he looked away before looking back at me, looking me in the eyes.
“I promise.”
But his eyes said that he couldn’t promise anything.
