Chapter 4
Runaway
I was vaguely aware that I was somewhere in Canada, or Alaska. Maybe Russia. It was dark and cold and I spent my time indoors, so I wasn’t really sure where I was, and I hadn’t asked. My parents were off on another honeymoon, leaving me with my grandparents who were continuing my education. I pushed myself more into my work and finished the curriculum for my senior year by January. I was still seventeen and would be seventeen until the first of February. I waited, lost in a cloud, in pain as day’s went by without any word from Jacob.
I had been unable to get through, his father always saying he was out with friends or asleep. It hurt so badly to think of it as over, so I simply forgot about it…until February the first. After that I secretly started planning, biding my time until Esme and Carlisle had to hunt before I made my move. I didn’t get out until March fifteenth, late at night, and I didn’t arrive until the sixteenth.
My heart was pounding as I got on the plain to Seattle, and then the drive to Forks. I had to stop many times to check my phone and see if anyone had called to find me. My phone was loaded with calls, all of which I ignored as I pulled back onto the road, getting closer and closer to my destination.
I pulled up outside of Jacob’s house and took a few deep breaths before hopping out of the rental car. I knocked, but received no answer. I found myself on the beach, my heart breaking more and more with each passing second. I looked to the water and my heart stilled as I caught sight of flaming red hair.
“Victoria…”
Just as soon as I had seen her, she was gone, and gasping from the beach caught my attention. My heart began to flutter as I saw my Jacob, but it stilled when I saw a soaking wet Bella, barely breathing. I ran over as fast as I could, kicking up sand around me. I removed my jacket and set it over her, trying to warm her.
“A…Andre?”
I looked up with a soft smile.
“Yea, I’m here. I couldn’t make my escape until I was legal. Then it was a month before Carlisle and Esme went…hiking.”
“You mean hunting. I know that they are vampires.”
I winced.
“That’s such a…dark word. They are great people and have cared for me from infancy, they are angels really.”
Jacob scowled and I frowned.
“Why didn’t you call?”
Jacob picked Bella up, cradling her in his arms.
“Your family messed Bella up, and she is my friend. She was like a zombie after he left and only recently woke out of it.”
I looked away.
“I…was a zombie too.”
I felt my heart breaking again.
“Every day…I would just go through the motions until I knew that I was old enough to escape without being forced back to them. And every day after that I worked on my escape. I’m not Edward. I never will be. Every night I’ve only dreamed about you and…”
“I’m sorry Andre, it’s over. It’s best you not think about it anymore. I’m not what I was before. Your family and my kind are enemies. You should go home before your family comes looking. Best that they don’t break the treaty.”
So he was a wolf then. I remembered the stories that I had been told about the wolves. I just never thought that I would lose the one person I cared about…to something like that.
I knew I was still in a dangerous place, but still, I sat on the beach after he left, looking out over the waves as they crashed against the shore. A hand touched my shoulder, but when I turned there was no one there. Victoria was playing games with me.
I brushed the tears from my eyes and ran back to Jacob’s house, jumped into the rental, and sped off to my old home. I threw myself on my bed when I got there, and a short time later I found myself cradled against a hard chest.
“Shh, little one, it is all going to be okay.”
“How can you say that Auntie, he left me?”
“You don’t need the wolf, besides…he would have left eventually. You will not be human much longer after all, they are waiting for your return.”
I sniffled and rested myself closer to my aunt.
“I don’t want to be a vampire. I want to be a wolf. Maybe then…maybe then he would love me.”
My aunt sighed softly and rested a soft kiss on my cheek.
“All will be resolved soon. I can see your smiling face in the near future. Please just hold out a little longer.”
I slept for the next few days until my aunt finally pulled me out of bed.
“Your uncle is going to do something stupid; we have to get to Italy.”
My heart started pounding harder in my stomach and I grasped at the sheets, trying to stay safely in bed. Maybe if I stayed human Jacob would want me again. But if I went to Italy my fate would be decided and I would never be human again, and Jacob would never want me again. My wolf, my Jacob, my other half.
I was practically carried to the plane, I had no choice but to follow or suffer broken bones. class=GramE>And when we were finally in Italy.
“Bella’s gone, now get up front.”
I hopped up front and dug my nails deep into my hands, but they were cut so short that they did almost no damage.
“Calm down, your parents will be here soon to watch over you during this time of change.”
I started shaking as she led me through the alleys.
“I…don’t want this.”
And then I saw my uncle again and tears filled my eyes. I looked away, feeling hate for him for the first time.
I traveled through the dark tunnels, fear running through me, and then I saw him, a man that looked so much like me.
My father.
