I had two more hours of homework and then it was off to bed. I was so tired that I didn't dream that night, not that I normally did, but someone had started calling my name when I was in the pre- dawn hours. I woke with a start when my phone beeped at 7. I got up and showered, dressed, and then got Sammie ready.
“You need to get him to bed sooner.” My Aunt sneered unpleasantly at me.
“Don't tell me how to care for him. I've been doing it since he was a baby.” I growled and shot her a glare, zipping the lunch boxes closed. I tossed an apple at her and told her to stuff it. She scowled and I brought Sammie down to get in the car. Once he was in the booster, we were off to his school. His started a full half hour before mine so I stayed with him in the beginning. We worked on writing his name, saying the alphabet, and the number line. He wasn't to pleased that I couldn't stop by at lunch that day. I told him that I'd make it up to him later.
He kissed my cheek grumpily and I jogged out to my car. I sped into the parking lot and jumped out and went into the school. I hadn't realized that it was going to downpour while I was with Sam. I sighed and stuck my head under the hand dryer, thankful that everyone was in the halls or going to class. I brushed threw it and pinned the front back. My hair was slightly annoying when it was long, but if I didn't want tight curls then I'd have to keep it.
I sat in Biology again. Bella sat next to me. I was surprised when the teacher made us work with the guy in front of us. His eyes surprised me the most. They weren't the black they'd been the first day of class. They were a.. golden. He smiled sheepishly, there was no other word for it, and sat next to me. Bella set up the microscope and slid a slide under. I turned to look too. We bumped heads and laughed quietly. We told each other the answers and filled out or lab sheets.
“Did you have to do anything like this in Orlando?” Bella asked as we finished writing up the answers.
“All the time. I've always been in execrated classes. You?”
“I'm right where I'm supposed to be. That's what Charlie says.” She rolled her eyes. I smiled and got up to turn in the slides. I had to hop over someone's backpack to get back.
“What are you doing tonight?” Bella asked me as we left class.
“You already know the answer to that question.” Someone snorted behind us and Edward was looking at me funny.
“What?” I asked, wondering what he was thinking.
“Oh, nothing.” He said teasingly.
“I'm pretty sure he's bipolar.” Bella told me under her breath.
“More than likely, so, do you want to come over and join me in the attic?”
“What are you Cinderella with amazing clothes?” For a minuet she looked worried, but I couldn't help laughing. That was so funny!
The rest of the day past quickly and I hugged Bella goodbye and then went to get Sam. When I got there, I expected him to jump into my arms as he always did, but the teacher said that my Aunt had picked him up. I was so pissed. I stormed to the car and hit the gas. There was no way that she was going to make my brother cry just because she was a ...B with and itch.
When I got to the house, I could hear yelling and fighting before I was even inside.
“Sam!” I screamed over the loud music, shouting and small party in the living room. “Sam!” I yelled up the stairs, and then the latter. “Where is he!” I screamed. The music stopped suddenly and they all frowned.
“What do you mean?” Aunt Lucy looked worried.
“the lady said that you picked him up from the preschool.”
“I haven't left the house today. Now, would you kindly leave. We're trying to have a party.”
“Ugh!” I stormed out of the house and tried to think of who else could have gotten him. I didn't think of anyone other than Bella. I pealed into her drive. She came out, looking worried.
“What's the matter?”
“Sam is missing. Did your father hear anything?”
“No. Dad!” She shouted. He came running out.
“What is it Bella?”
“Sephora said that her little brother is missing...”
“Really?”
“Yes really.” I snapped, regretting it when he looked sad. “Sorry.” I muttered, gripping the leather steering wheel.
“Well, did he have anywhere that he liked to go?”
“We've only been here a week, sir. He could barely find the bathroom this morning.”
“Right. I'll call the station. We'll find him.”
We set up a search party. Bella refused to leave my side. Charlie handed us mag- lights and we jogged into the forest behind the school.
“Sammie!” I shouted into the misty darkness. We only had two hours until dark. “Sam!” Bella shouted a minuet later. We trampled over every inch that the pre-school owned and then when Bella said it was time to turn back, I jogged off there property and into the more dense forest. How could something like this happen. I used all my track skills from my previous school. The backpack with a blanket, another flashlight, and power bars, swung as I jumped over logs and rocks. Bella stopped a while back, going back defeated. I was not going to loose my brother. It just wasn't an option. I cam to a clearing soon after dark and looked around it.
“Sammie!” I shouted. There was a rustling and a pale man came out from the bushes. “Sam!” I yelled again, wondering if he was hear somewhere.
“Sephora?” It was Edward.
“Hi. Um, Sam, my little brother is missing.” He looked funny in the light from the mag light.
“I'll help you look.”
“Thanks.” He strode on ahead of me. We were soon past the clearing and then into even more thickly built forest. I pulled out my Blackberry and looked at the location. We were just three miles from La Push reservation now.
“Sam!” I called again.
“Listen.” Edward told me as we came to a little stream.
“What?” I whispered. He looked like he was concentrating. All I knew was that he better not be faking or he'd have a serious welt on his head, come tomorrow.
“My house is just north of here. Come on.” He muttered, jumping over a rock and onto the ferns. I fallowed him easily and he seemed surprised. We hurried on and finally we came to a nice manicured lawn with high shrubs all around the house.
“Sissy?” I heard a whimper.
“Sammie?” I breathed as another man and Sam appeared on the porch. I dropped the backpack and ran up to him. “Oh, Sammie.” I hugged him tightly. He cried into my shoulder. I felt a tear escape my eye as well. God, I'd been so afraid that a bear of something had gotten him.... “Are you okay, baby?” The men had gone into the house.
“I'm okay. The man found me soon after Auntie tried to take me away. He said that you'd know where to look for me.”
“Well, I had some help. Have you eaten?” I rubbed his tummy gently.
“The kids' mommy fed me. There is this girl, she's even shorter than you, and she was so nice!” He whispered into my ear.
“Come on, I have to go thank them.”
“Okay.” He wouldn't let go of my neck the whole time I was there. Edward stood against the doorjamb and The mother, Esme seemed genuinely happy to have me there.
“I hoe that he wasn't trouble.” I muttered as he slept on my shoulder. I'd collapsed on the plush white sofa after they'd fed me dinner.
“Not at all.” the man who'd brought him out, Carlisle said. “It's been a while since I've been around any little kids.”
“Not me though.” Alice hopped around, happy that we were there too. I grinned up at her. They all went to Forks high school too. I wondered why I hadn't ever seen them.
“You are a kid, Alice.” Edward smiled at her. She glared and continued hopping around. She looked so graceful, like a dancer would be.
“So, you found him.” Aunt Lucy said as we got in.
“If you ever go near him again, I'll have you hauled into the police department, and I'm sure they'd love to see your record.” I grinned at her. Father was a very capable man.
“Don't threaten me you little piece of shit.”
“Um.. really grown up.” I rolled my eyes and went up the latter, the fatigue finally catching up. She stormed into the bedroom on the other side and I closed the latter. I was so tired. I laid on the floor, Sammie on top of my chest, his head in the crook of my neck. This would have to be good. I yawned and my eyes slipped closed.
When I woke that next morning, I was on my bed and thankfully it was Saturday. Sammie was asleep beside me, snoring softly. I stretched my legs and stood up, stretching my arms.
“Good morning.” It was Edward. I must look horrid. I pushed my bangs down and stifled a yawn.
“How did you get in here.”
“Threw the window.”
“you scaled the house?” I muttered, intrigued. I looked down at the ground.
“Sort of. Sleep well?” He stood from the floor and dusted off the jeans he wore.
“Yes. Um.. did you move us?” I blushed hotly.
“Yup. See, there are things that you don't know about us. My family and I..”
“Your vampires.” I smiled.
“How did you figure that out?” He looked surprised.
“Last night, well it was a little before that, but with your hearing, we were almost a mile from your house and you could hear 'something' and your skin was very pale in the flashlight, light.. and your eyes. There is no way a human's eyes can change that much. I also figured out why you were so stiff that first day. I hadn't realized that I was appetizing.” I grinned.
“How do you know all of that?” He was still surprised.
“I just told you. I figured it out.” I pet back Sammie's hair and pulled out clean clothes.
“What are you up to today?”
“Staying here.. I don't know.”
“Hum. Bella thought that you would do something fun with Sammie.”
“Oh! That's right, father is flying into the Seattle airport. Would you like to come with us? There is plenty of room in the car.. and I'm sure he'd like to meet the saviour of Sammie.” I grinned.
“I didn't do anything.” Edward shrugged.
“Good, then you can come and tell him the story. I didn't even get to hear it.”
“Alright. Going to shower?”
“Yes. Would you tell him where I am so he doesn't get scared. Hand him this.” I handed him the plastic card that had been void a long time ago.
“Sure.” He looked at it, puzzled, and then sat back down on the bed. I went down to shower and ready to drive. I'd promised that after we'd seen father that I'd take him to McDonalds in Seattle. He loved the big play places.
After I'd gotten Sammie ready and then grabbed some food for on the way, we left. Edward sat beside me, fiddling with my iPod and stereo as Sammie chatted away.
“I was glad when you showed up. The mommy looked tired. Someone said that I was a handful, but I wasn't trying to be, honest.”
“I know sweetie. I'm just glad that you were safe.” Edward finally settled on soft rock and left it alone.
“You didn't have plans today?” I asked as we got on the ferry to go across the.. well, ocean.
“None. I don't ever have anything pressing that needs to be done.” After the ferry ride, Sammie fell asleep again. I was surprised. We'd slept well past 10 o'clock.
When we got to the airport, I drove around, looking for father's limo. I soon found it and he got out, looking worn out. I turned off the car and hopped out to hug him.
“Daddy.”
“Well, it looks like Forks wasn't the best choice. Maybe I should have taken you down to L.A. and...”
“No, Daddy. It's fine really. Your sister though...” I shook my head.
“How's my little man?”
“Sleeping. I think all the fear really wore him out. He was talkative to Edward and I on the way here.” I motioned to the man in the car.
“Edward?” He raised a brow.
“We're rust friends, daddy.” I grinned up at him.
“That's all?” He raised a brow when Edward got out of the car as well.
“Yes.” I murmured, blushing.
“Mr. Allen.” He shook his hand and stepped back.
“Well, are you kids doing anything while your in the city?”
“I've got to grab a few things for Sammie and I promised McDonalds.”
“Sound's good. You have the credit card?”
“As always. Where are you off to next?”
“New York. There are a few loose ends I need to tie up and then it's back to L.A.” He shrugged. “Are you planning on staying the summer in Forks?”
“Sammie wants to. It shouldn't be as hot there, what with all the rain.”
“I heard there very.. gloomy there.”
“Yes, but it's good. Settles you, sort of.”
“There's my girl.” He pulled me into his arms and hugged me. “Well, I have to get going. Just.. try not to let Lucy get to you. She's afraid of spiders.. any really.” He smirked down at me. I grinned back.
“Thanks Daddy. See you soon?”
“Within a month.”
“Okay.” I kissed his cheek and waved him off.
“Your dad..” Edward shook his head.
“You weren't reading his thought's were you?” I glared.
“It's hard not to. He's got a million and one things going on though.”
“Ugh.” I glared and he chuckled. I thought about running into him, but that would probably do more damage to the car than anything. I laughed at that as he got in. Sammie woke up as we pulled into the bright McDonalds. He dragged Edward into the play house while I ordered us food. I wasn't sure what to get Edward so I ordered him standard Big- Mac and fries. I took the trey in and sat it on one of the tables. Edward was playing hide and seek with Sam up in the play house. I smiled when Edward made a face from the top circle. I frowned up at him and Sam three tubes below him. I thought about going up there and joining in, but I was hungry. I realized that the last time I ate was breakfast on Friday morning.. almost 28 hours ago. I unwrapped my grilled chicken sandwich and nibbled on fries as I watched them play. I snapped a few pictures of them as they came down the slide and in the circles. Edward was so good with Sam. I wondered if he'd been a father in his time. I doubted it. He seemed to like kids, but not really much else. I hardly knew the guy, just from what I'd observed. It was hard not knowing everything about him.
After a while, Sam and Edward joined the table, Sammie bouncing and happy and Edward please all the same.
“Have fun?”
“Lots and lots!” Sam grinned and I set his food in front of him.
“That's good.” I smoothed his hair and handed Edward his food. “I wasn't sure what you liked. I hope that's alright.”
“Just fine.” He pretended to nibble for Sam's sake and I held in a laugh.
“What stores are we gunna go to?” Sam asked as we pulled out of the parking lot.
“We've got to get you some new clothes and a nice jacket for winter.”
“Aw..”
“And then we'll go buy a TV, lap top, and movies, how about that?”
“Sweet!” He bounced in his seat, happy again.
“your Aunt is a very interesting person.” Edward said, looking threw the racks of clothing.
“That she is.” I muttered, angry again. “I think that she thinks I'm my father's spawn or something.”
“I'm sure. She also thinks that you should be a model and give her the money.”
“Like that would ever happen.” I balked and picked out some sweats from the shelf. I held them up to a pair of his old ones and nodded to myself.
“What about this shirt?” Edward held up a light blue shirt that said 'I luv my sister' I laughed and nodded. It wasn't like they were going to see him in it. These were all for bed anyway.
“Don't you need anything?”
“Just pajamas.”
“Okay.” He nodded and pushed the cart toward the ladies section. I picked out three bra's as well. This was a great store.
After that, we loaded everything into the car and went to pick out things from the home entertainment store.
“May I help you?” A teen that looked just a little to excited asked us.
“No, but thanks.” He frowned and nodded. I felt bad, but Sammie was pulling me to the movies.
I picked out a thirteen inch plasma TV and Sam had about twenty movies. Edward held the DVD player. We had to go to Best Buy to get the laptop I wanted. I hoped that it was easy to find. I really needed one for school.
After the sun had set, Sam in front of the TV, my computer set up on my bed and Edward sitting beside Sam, relaxed and happy, everything was all good. I called father and updated him. He told me to just watch for the things that freaked my out.
“And, father, do you know what those are?”
“I'm sure that you know from experience.”
“Obviously.” I hissed into the phone. His laughter was soft and tired. “I'll let you get to sleep. E-mail me tomorrow from NY. Send me some pix of the Ifle tower or something.”
“Okay then.” We hung up. At ten, I put Sam to bed and was surprised when Edward laid down next to me on the double bed.
“That was great today.”
“It was fun. I'm surprised that you went up with all those kids.”
“I fed last night. Plus, kids are sticky.” He smiled down at me.
“Mhm. Night, Edward.” I rolled over, not at all pulsed that he was laying in my bed, staring at the back of my head.
I thought I heard a whisper of 'Why can't I read your mind', but I was to tired to think about it.
