Chapter 3
Despite her initial thought of talking to Nicolette, she refrained from doing so. Of course she was tempted to kill her a bear. The moment she’d stepped out of the house and into the bar all of the bear brothers turned and looked at her with grins. Except Remi who was working and trying to ignore his brothers. Dev started her way and then wrapped a big burly arm around her. “Well, well so you and Remi had some fun eh?” he asked laughing at her blush.
Remi glanced up then narrowed his eyes on his brother who was dragging Amara towards the rest of the guys. A growl was the only warning before Remi had Dev’s arm twisted away from Amara and against his back. He said something to Dev that made the other man turn a curious glance to her.
Amara turned and stalked away heading up to the balcony to keep out of the way of the Peltier brothers.
The party had been in full swing for about two hours and Amara had kept her distance from the rest of them. She was sitting on the railing above everyone just keeping an eye out for trouble. She’d seen everyone coming and going including Jessica, Acheron and Simi. But she’d avoided them all even after she found herself sitting beside Acheron.
The man had stayed quiet for a while just people watching with her. “So… I’ve heard that Nicolette has a death warrant issued for you. Sleeping with one of the Peltiers? Come on Amara.” he said looking like he was still watching the people, but she knew he wasn’t looking at her from the corner of his eye. She didn’t respond to him, finding that just shrugging worked.
“I’m leaving in the next half an hour anyway. You know the night after Christmas is always a fun experience.” she finally said after he turned his gaze to her fully. “Besides I’m tired of seeing her face.” she said referring to Jessica. She sounded bitter and Acheron just sighed.
“You’ll have to forgive her sometime you know.” he said and she shook her head in denial. “Well regardless I’m sure you’ll find a reason to stay.” he said and Amara snorted about to retort when he was gone. “I hate when he pulls that shit.” she muttered focusing back on the crowd. It wasn’t a really big one, mostly dark hunters former and current, a few demons, were-hunters and squires.
She sighed rubbing her temples carefully before moving to leave the railing. She was intent of getting her things and leaving, but a grinning Kyle blocked her path the moment she headed for the stairs.
“So… we have a problem. We always have this one girl who sings a few Christmas songs with the Howlers.. And she’s sick. And Acheron tells me you have a hell of a voice…” he stopped talking as her eyes narrowed in annoyance. “Umm well and he thought maybe you could… sing a few? You know just to…” she brushed past him and he turned watching her go. “Or not.”
Remi had watched the interaction and he knew what Kyle was asking her to do. And she did exactly what he had expected. Walked away. Remi couldn’t help but follow. “Not going to do it?” he asked her as he caught up with her. She turned her glare on him and he smirked “That don’t scare me babe. So put it away.” she sighed and looked away from him.
“No Remi I’m not. I’m heading home. I have things to do and don’t have time to be here.” she muttered only to make a noise of protest when he spun her around with a smirk. “Yeah? And Acheron’s already told Mama that you would sing. So you don’t have much of a choice now do you?” her eyes shot to Acheron who just grinned at her. She on the other hand flipped him the bird before turning her gaze back to Remi with an annoyed resignation.
“Fine lead away.” she muttered following the grinning bear to a side room where he left her. Aimee Peltier was inside holding up a costume that she’d kill Acheron later for.
“Alright folks. As you know Jena is sick and unable to be with us. But fortunately for us… more so for others,” Dev said on stage eyes darting to his brother Remi in the corner for a moment “We have a pretty damn good replacement. So lets hear it for the Dark-huntress Amara!” he started clapping and Amara walked out cheeks red. She felt ridiculous.
A few whistles filled the room as the spotlight hit the costume she’d almost torn to shreds. Knee high leather boots and a red skirt and top with white fur. The girly version of the Santa clause outfit. She wanted to die right there. She took a breath to steady herself as the howlers started the opening sounds to Santa Baby. With another deep breath she started shocking some of the people around in the process. She even saw Remi perk up slightly,
“Santa Baby just slip a sable under the tree for me been an awful good girl…” after the first few moments of hesitation she was singing and even dancing a bit. She drew quite a few whistles and by the end of the first song she was a deep red, but smiling.
She sang a few more before heading for the edge of the stage to jump down and change. Just as she went to jump down Remi was there catching her before she hit the ground. “nice job…” he told her before noticing the silence of the people around them. He leveled a glare on them and they turned their attention back on the howlers.
Remi took her back upstairs where he sat and pulling her into his lap. She relaxed instantly into his grip head laying on his shoulder. She felt more then comfortable with the bear, despite the fact that shouldn’t be. She should be heading home before the sun rose. Safe in her own bed until it was time to hunt again. But she couldn’t find the strength to leave his arms.
Remi had one arm wrapped around her waist his other laying across her bare upper thighs blocking anyone who came up, sight of her. That part of him that wanted to keep her protected was there again and his bear was quiet and content. For a moment he had a thought that she may be his mate… but there was no way. Acheron would have a conniption, as would his mother. She tolerated the Dark-Hunters but she wasn’t really fond of them.
But Remi could care less. Right now all that mattered was the girl that was quickly falling asleep in his arms. This felt right, perfect even. He glanced up with a threatening growl as Acheron walked up hands raised in surrender. More time had passed then either had realized and it was nearly dawn about the time it would have been should Amara had left when she had planned. Acheron looked grim as he pulled up a chair.
“Listen I need you to do something for me Remi. Keep an eye on her. She’s not going home anytime soon. I just got a call from a few friends, seems someone thought it fit to blow up Amara’s place.” Remi’s grip tightened on the slumbering girl and Acheron sighed
“No one has any clue who did it. But I think it’s more then a coincidence that Jessica’s friends pulled that then her house blows up. Someone was expecting her to be there when it happened. Someone’s not too happy with her and until I find out who it is, she’s staying here. Whether Nicolette likes it or not… I’d prefer a more secure room for her, if someone could get into her house with her security system then they could easily penetrate the sanctuary…”
“She’ll stay in my room.” Remi said suddenly, “How much more safe could it be?” Acheron arched a brow at that but seeing how he found them… he simply shrugged. “She’s going to protest… a lot. She’s used to getting what she wants, perks of first being a gangsters daughter then a dark-hunter.” Acheron seemed to think that was funny for some reason and snickered a bit.
Remi just stared at him for a minute before nodded that he understood. He didn’t understand what was funny, but he supposed Acheron probably wasn’t quite sure either. It had been a hell of week, and quite frankly Remi was tired of it.
“Rem! Mama’s been looking for you. Handing out gifts and shit.” Kyle said from the stairs. He’d paused as soon as he saw Acheron talking to Remi who had Amara in his lap. Remi made a sound of aggravation but stood, lifting Amara with him with little effort. Acheron followed suit but reached out a hand to shake Amara awake. Remi glared but didn’t comment.
Amara protested getting up, though when she saw Acheron staring at her with an arched brow she ignored it and smiled sheepishly.
“Umm Hello Acheron. Remi… wanna… put me down? Please?” The bear looked at Acheron then shook his head. She sighed. “Well I tried.” Acheron shook his head.
“Amara, we have some problems.” he began and Amara could only groan. Things were never good when it Acheron said that. Worse then usual actually. But in a matter of moments Amara would be staring in complete disbelief. Her house, everything? Gone…every memento she had of her parents, up in smoke. She was glad Remi had her, because it he hadn’t been holding her she would have fallen to the floor.
“Remi! Get your-” Nicolette paused on the top stair, “Acheron.” she greeted, “Everyone’s waiting on you baby.” She said to Remi seeming to be ignoring the girl that was staring off blankly. Her attention turned back to Acheron, a frown on her face.
“Simi is waiting for you.” she turned and walked away. Remi shook his head and finally put Amara down. She leaned back against him still trying to process the information. She was vaguely aware of Remi leading her downstairs where everyone else was sitting around.
She snapped into awareness and took a seat on the floor, Remi sat behind her, his legs stretched out on either side of her. Simi was rolling around on the floor with one of the bear cubs, but she made a beeline for Amara when she saw her.
“Mar!” the female demon giggled and sat beside her forcing Remi to move his foot. The bear glared at the back of her head. Amara smiled and attempted to be cheerful for the child-like demon. It was harder to do then she thought.
The rest of the people were too busy handing out and opening gifts to bother with her mood. It was supposed to be a cheerful evening after all. Even Acheron and Simi were being handed gifts. Amara, who hadn’t planned on being there at all, didn’t expect, not want anything. So when a small wrapped package dropped in her lap she looked up confused.
Nicolette was staring down at her, the animosity from earlier was gone but she still didn’t seem too happy. She toyed with the package in no particular hurry to open it. Remi nudged her with his foot and she glanced back at him. She continued to toy with the package for a moment before sighing and opening it. She felt Remi get closer to look over her shoulder as Amara stared at the small picture frame. It was her parents and her a few years before their deaths. She glanced up confused.
“Jessica found it, a while back. Decided it would be a good gift. It seems now more then ever.” Amara wanted at first to shun the gift. But instead clutched it to her chest trying to fight back tears. Simi leaned against her and took the picture.
“This is Mar’s Daddy?” she asked pointing to the man. Amara only nodded and Simi pouted, “Akri! We need a picture too!” she whined causing a few snickers to go through the room. Simi lightened the mood considerably through the evening leaving Amara the only one still down. As the assembled drank Simi entertained the cubs. One scooted away from Simi and batted at Amara, making a playful growling noise.
The cub distracted her and she smiled pushing at him softly. The sub grabbed her hand gnawing on her fingers, but not enough to hurt. Little by little Amara allowed herself to forget her problems and simply played with the cub.
Acheron nudged Remi from across the room and then Remi smirked and tapped his mother shoulder. By the time the woman glanced over, the cub was laying between her legs but still had a hold of her hand. It was making content noises and Amara seemed content with entertaining the child. For a moment the room was silent and it took Amara a moment to realize it. She blushed crimson and dropped her gaze. The cub looked over at his family then made another playful noise before rolling more into Amara to regain her attentions.
Remi and his brothers watched her carefully and Dev dropped his arm on Remi’s shoulder.
“So… are we thinking mate?” he asked quietly, distracting Remi from her.
“Mate? Doubt it. We haven’t even got the mark…” he said almost sounding upset about it. Dev glanced at his brother then at Amara. He could tell that there was something about Amara that drew his brother in. And if they weren’t mates, we’ll damn it they should.
Dev pushed the other towards Amara and the bear glared before his look softened. He moved and sat behind Amara. Still blushing, she glanced back at him before the cub demanded her attention back with a whine. He was getting tired, but wanted to stay up as long as possible and play.
It wasn’t much longer before the cub was simply curled up in front of her sleeping. Her hand was still caught in the cubs paws and Remi chuckled next to her ear.
“Seems I’m not the only bear with an attachment….” he muttered nipping at her ear. She eeped and moved her head away from him her blush returning full force. Aubert walked over in an attempt to ease her discomfort, but only increased it. By this time even her ears were red. He chuckled and knelt gently taking her hand from the cubs paws.
“You should get some rest.” he said as he stood taking the cub with him. Remi watched his father walk away and in a copy of what his father did, scooped Amara up into his arms. She protested, but not loudly enough to draw the others attentions. Remi’s body was thrumming with energy, and he wanted nothing more then to have her alone. Easily he escaped the room without notice and from there he made a quick retreat to his room. As soon as they were alone Amara’s blush faded.
“I should head back to my room.” she said, but was ignored as he entered his room. He ignored her look and set her onto his bed. For a moment he only stared at her breathing in the scent that had been so hard to catch in the crowded room. It was like a drug to him and he hit his knees before her. He leaned forward and buried his face in her neck, a growl like purr escaping from between his lips.
The animal part of him responded to her, wanted her. His lips brushed across her neck and he felt her shiver. His nose was filled with her smells, her own reactions to him. Another growl ripped from his throat as he pushed her back against the bed. He nuzzled her stomach pushing her shirt up to reveal the smooth skin beneath. He couldn’t get enough of her. If he thought he could lock her away in his room, he would. No one would be able to see what belonged to him.
His mind went into chaos when she moaned his name, sending a spark down his spine. He shifted to kiss her large hand holding her head gently. For a moment all he could think of was taking her again. But he could sense her fatigue, despite her eagerness. He nuzzled her neck once more before standing up. He grinned and a moment later with a little help, they were both dressed for bed. Or, lack of dress in his case. She blushed at the pink frilly thing he had put her in then glared.
He almost seemed to pout before changing her outfit to a pair of shorts and a t-shirt.
“Happy?” she smirked and nodded. “Good.” He watched her slide across the large bed and he had the urge to take her. He squashed it and slipped in behind her unabashedly pressing his naked body against hers. He nipped at her neck for a bit before she elbowed him and called him a ‘damn tease’. He smirked and backed up. The bed shifted as he turned into a bear and pressed back to her back.
His last waking thoughts were of her, and how his mother had almost approved of how she acted with the cub. That was as close as his mother got to an approval of a person themselves. He buried his nose in Amara’s hair barely twitching at a burn in his palm. Amara said something in her sleep and rolled over burying her fingers in his fur. Neither would notice the mark marring their palms. Content for now to sleep.
