Magnus stood in the library with Clary. That was the only stipulation that Jocelyn and Luke made about them meeting, they had to stay in a public area and the ‘adults’ were only two doors away and would come to check on them at various times. His back was to her again as he looked outside and seemed to think about his words before saying them. Each word it appeared was to be weighed and well thought out before he would allow them to leave his mouth.
“You came” Clary said unnecessarily more to break the silence than to really converse with him, it was an awkward silence.
“I was called” He answered turning to look at her finally and she was caught again by the beauty of his eyes “How did you call me?”
“I think you know” She answered “I think you’ve known about the bond for a while now”
“I have” He answered “And I was looking for a way to get rid of it”
“Because I’m a woman?” She guessed.
“Because you are young” He said “Because you deserve better than an old, gay Warlock who has absolutely no luck when it comes to love”
“And I do?” She asked with a laugh “I’ve only attracted one guy who thought I was his sister and for some reason since finding out that I’m not isn’t attracted to me at all”
“You have Simon” Magnus started “And there will be…”
“Magnus” She said “I’m not saying that I want marry you…I’m not even sure what this bond is I just…” Her eyes filled with tears “Why does everyone think there’s some ulterior motive?”
“Clary” He looked pained “Don’t get upset…” She put her head down and tried to hide the fact that she was crying “Please, don’t do that”
She turned away from him as she always did hate showing that particular emotion to anyone, even her mother. The rune to hide her emotions was in place but as they were bonded he could see everything that she was feeling. The reminder that they were bonded and he hated it made her heart break all over again. Once again Clary wasn’t good enough for someone, first it had been a boy in her freshmen class named Michael, then it was Jace and then it was Simon because really he’d ditched her when he realized that she didn’t feel that way about him and now it was Magnus. The worse part about Magnus was that she knew he was gay and their relationship wouldn’t go anywhere but to hear him so openly say that he didn’t want anything to do with her really hit her and now she couldn’t stop herself from sobbing pitifully.
“Clary…” He moved closer to her “Clary please…”
She gave up trying to be brave and took off out the library door. She ran all the way to her bedroom and slammed her door, drawing a locking and sound blocking rune on it and sat down on her bed. She hated herself for this, she wanted to go back and tell him that she was joking and to forget about the bond but Clary knew that she couldn’t face him ever again. Even though it was only a little after five in the evening Clary changed in to her pajamas and climbed in to her bed, pulling the blankets over her head and willing herself to sleep.

Alec walked around the corner of the bedroom hallway and nearly ran in to Jaces back as the other boy was standing stationary right around the corner. He was watching something with a confused expression on his face, Alec tried a few times to get his attention but when he couldn’t he followed the blondes gaze. Clary’s mother, Jocelyn and the woman’s werewolf boyfriend Luke, was standing outside her bedroom. That wasn’t the strange thing though, it was the fact that Magnus was sitting on the ground apparently fighting with them about something. Both boys stood there for almost five minutes before Jocelyn looked at them with a smile and made her way over. She explained that Clary wasn’t feeling well but wouldn’t tell them what was wrong with her so Magnus came to help and they were discussing the options. Jace shrugged and went on to his room but Alec remained standing there until Jocelyn and Luke left after a few more minutes of whispering.
“Magnus” Alec greeted as he walked over to him with a flirty grin “You want to go to my room for some…conversation?”
“No” He answered distractedly “I’m busy”
“But you’re just sitting here” Alec said “Not doing anything”
“Alec” He sighed and stood up “I’m sorry, I’m just a little distracted. Please, don’t be angry with me, I’ll talk to you later…did you have a good dinner with your parents?”
“I did” Alec lied, he had met the girl that his mother wanted him to marry. She had been a relatively pretty girl with blonde hair, green eyes and big breasts. Looks weren’t the reason his mother liked her, she was the only child of the second best (the Lightwoods were the best) shadow hunters family and together they would have great children.
“I’m glad” Magnus kissed his forehead “Goodnight”
As confused as Alec was about whatever was going on he just shrugged and made his way through the hallway and to his bed. He walked in and locked his door, he was sure that Magnus was going home soon but he still wanted the privacy. He pulled his shirt over his head and stood in front of his full length mirror and looked at his body. He had nice muscles and great abs, any woman would love his body and that was how it should be. He frowned, unfortunately the thought of being with a woman wasn’t something that made him feel very hot. He should tell Magnus but really, he knew that he was a downworlder and that Alec was a shadow hunter surely he knew that Alec wasn’t really serious about him. With a scoff he turned away from his mirror and made his way to shower and then head to bed, tomorrow he would train in the gym with Jace (he was still nice to look at) then look at some work the Clave sent over and in the evening he would likely go out with Jenna again. He was sure that marrying her would be the best idea so now it was time to take her on a few dates, pop the question and then move on with his life. He was certain that he would be able to keep Magnus on the side for some fun while he was married.

Clary opened her bedroom door and stepped out for the day, tripping over something that was on her bedroom doorstep. She looked down and saw Magnus sleeping uncomfortably on the floor, she frowned down at him and attempted to step over him. She almost made her way away from him but felt fingers close around her ankle, she looked down at him and found his beautiful green eyes looking at her pleadingly. She shook her head at him sadly and waited for him to remove his fingers which he did after only a moments hesitation. She walked around the corner and found Luke and her mother walking towards the hallway she just left.
“Is Magnus still here?” Jocelyn asked.
“He was sleeping in front of my door” Clary answered “Why did he do that?”
“Clary” Luke said “Come with us and we’ll explain a little more” She nodded and followed them in to an office that Jocelyn often used when dealing with potential buyers of her artwork.
“What happened?” Luke asked.
“I cried” She said miserably “He thinks I’m a stupid little girl and I’m sick of it!” She started to pace “I cried and he got all…strange and apparently spent the night outside my bedroom door”
“For the downworlder who has a part of the bond” Luke explained “It’s difficult to watch our bond mate display actions that often times we’ve forgotten how to deal with. Crying is the worse, remorse and hurt feelings are the first emotions that a downworlder whose lived for a while, such as Magnus, forgets and learns to ignore” Clary frowned while trying to process his words “I have it easier than him because your mother and I were born only within a few years of each other and I still had all my emotions with me when I got to know her, that and werewolves very rarely live as long as Warlocks”
“So…what” Clary asked “Magnus has forgotten how to be a human with actual human emotions?”
“That’s exactly right” Jocelyn answered “By rights Magnus shouldn’t only be dead if he were a normal human man but he should be nothing more than dust and…well…not even memory”
“So that’s like stunted him?” Clary verified “Like a handicap?”
“Not exactly” Jocelyn answered “Magnus kept himself the center of attention basically his entire life. He has trouble understanding the more private emotions, things like hurt, crying, remorse and all that, he understands fun, lust and excitement but not love or fear” She took her daughters hands “Once you guys get closer through your bond he will feel those emotions from you and learn to feel them again…you just need to be patient with him”
“I just feel like no one’s taking me seriously” Clary said as she sat down in one of the chairs and looked at her hands “I feel like such an alien here now”
“Clary, I had a thought…” Jocelyn started but Luke interrupted her.
“Jocelyn I thought we were going to talk about this a little more” He said.
“She’s miserable here, Luke” She answered.
“Tell me!” Clary snapped.
“I was thinking” Jocelyn started again after shooting the werewolf a meaningful look “That maybe you should go to Idris. There’s a college of sorts there, it’s mainly for homeschooled shadow-hunters which is inevitably what you are. If I contact them now we can get you in for the first semester, just from September to mid-December then you’ll be back here. The way the college works is that you go only for however long you want, it’s to introduce homeschooled shadow-hunters to others their age, to hone their skills and…well, originally it was so that marriages could be made but that’s not why you’re going there”
“Why would I be going there?” Clary asked.
“To get away from here” Jocelyn told her honestly “With Jace acting the way he is, Alec being…well, Alec and the bond with Magnus being all haywire…I don’t think that it would be a bad thing for you to get away and worry about nothing more than studying and making friends” Clary nodded seeming to take in all that her mother was saying.
“What about Isobel?” Clary asked “And what about you guys?”
“Well” Luke said after a moment “Your mother and I were thinking about going to London and then maybe France and Italy to see some art there and just soak in the feel of an actual vacation”
“And Isobel has been given permission to live with the Fairfolk in their world for a while” Jocelyn explained “Her mother had basically washed her hands of her and I feel that maybe time spent away from the shadow-hunter world and in the company of some downworlders she would flourish” She smiled as Clary agreed “Alec is in and out of the Institute and Jace is…well, I don’t know. He’s been different since we came back but really it’s just a matter of time before he’s dating and doing everything that Alec’s doing”
“I know” Clary took a deep breath “Okay, well since everyone else is moving on than I should do and you never know…I may love it”
“I went there” Jocelyn told her “It’s beautiful and you really learn a lot there…I’m not worried about you fitting in but about you ever wanting to come home again”
“What about Magnus?” Clary asked in a quiet voice “What about the bond?”
“It’ll still be there” Jocelyn promised “This will give you and him some time to work out what’s going on between you two and to figure it out separately before handling it together”
“Also” Luke held up a finger “You keep saying that everyone is treating you like a child, well going off to college is a certain way to show everyone that you are indeed growing up”
“Alright” Clary smiled, happier that she now had a plan with her life “Let’s do it then”
A/N: I’m already working on the next chapter. I hope you liked this one, I was weary because it seemed that Clary was weak and I really don’t see her like that. I wanted her to regain her independent spirit as well as get away from the depressing Institute so I thought I nice college experience, at least for a little while, would be fun.
