Ok, I know it's been a little while since I updated, but I had finals and my foot... Which is healing, by the way. I don't have to have surgery!
Anyway, I noticed when I was putting up this chapter that all of chapter three wasn't up for some reason. I fixed it, now, so be sure to check that before you read this. :)
I waited outside until the smell of his blood lessened, then returned to the restroom. I placed his arm over my shoulder and helped him to the nurse’s office.
I almost hit the nurse when she gasped at Whitaker. He didn’t look that bad, but I wanted to hit her for the sadness Whitaker suddenly felt. Carefully, I helped him to lie on the cot as the nurse instructed.
She checked over his body, over his ribs, and I had to rein myself in when he winced at her touch.
“What have you done to yourself, young man?” she admonished.
“I ticked off a football player,” he grumbled.
“Well, you’ll have to go to the emergency room for an x-ray. Those ribs could be broken or hopefully only severely bruised, but I can’t tell. I don’t have the right equipment.” There’s no internal bleeding, so of course they’re not broken! Idiot…
“I don’t wanna go.”
“Then you shouldn’t go around picking fights.”
“He didn’t pick the fight,” I growled. I wanted to shut her up. “He was accosted for no reason.” I smiled internally as she gulped in slight fear.
“You still have to go to the emergency room,” she managed to mumble out.
“I’ll take him.”
“I can’t let you do that, Mr. Hale. I’ll have to be the one to take him. You head back to class while I inform the principal.” I glared, but she still stood defiantly against me.
“Go on,” Whitaker murmured. “I’ll be fine. Like I said, I’ve had worse.”
I could only nod in assent. As soon as the nurse left, I took his hand in mine and kissed it again. The proximity of his blood made my head swim.
“I hope it’s not serious,” I whispered.
“Try not to take your anger out on anybody, please. We don’t need anyone else going to the hospital.” I nodded and gently squeezed his hand before exiting the room, pulling out my phone as I went.
“Yes?” Carlisle answered.
“Whitaker is being brought to the emergency room. Could you take care of him please?” I replied.
“Jasper?”
“Yes, it’s me. Will you help him?”
“I help all my patients. Is he the new student?”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
“Another student attacked him. They won’t let me bring him in, but the nurse is. Please, Carlisle, take care of him. I don’t know why, but I need you to.”
“All right. I’ll see what I can do.”
“Thank you, Carlisle.”
“And Jasper?”
“Yes?”
“It’s good to hear from you.” He hung up. I stared at my phone for a moment in shock. I didn’t realize my silence had affected them so much. I mean, yeah, I know their emotions, but I didn’t need my gift to hear the relief in his voice.
Lunch wasn’t over yet, surprisingly, so I headed to the cafeteria. I needed to talk to Edward.
“Where have you been?” he asked when I sat down.
I need your help.
“That doesn’t answer my question.” Bella glanced between the two of us, figuring out quickly that I wasn’t speaking aloud, and turned back to her food.
I was helping Whitaker. He was beaten by another student.
“How badly?”
I flashed a few images through my mind. I want to have a word with this boy, and I need you there to keep me from hurting him.
“That’s Joe Speake. He’s one of the star football players.”
I don’t care who he is. I won’t let him hurt Whitaker again.
“I may not understand your actions, but I’ll help you.”
You should understand.
“How can I? You’ve known him for a few days!”
You only knew Bella for a few days.
“That’s different.”
How? Just because he’s a guy and so am I?
“No, that’s not—”
Then how is it different?
He sighed. “I guess it’s not.”
Thank you.
“What do you want to do?”
I don’t know. He is sitting at the table behind you. Maybe we could…have a word with him.
Edward nodded. “Very well.” He stood and quietly turned to the table behind him. His hand settled on Joe’s shoulder, who jumped in surprise. “I need a word with you,” Edward murmured lowly, a hint of determination in his tone. “Quietly.”
Joe could not refuse. He rose from his seat. Edward jerked his head at me, and I followed them both from the deathly silent cafeteria.
I walked ahead of them both to the principal’s office. Before we reached it, though, I turned to the curious, and slightly scared, Joe.
“If you ever try to harm Whitaker Hill in any way again, you’ll have me to deal with. I’m warning you this once, understand?”
He shakily nodded, looking from Edward to me. Edward stood menacingly at his side, and pushed him towards the door at my nod.
“Where are you taking me?” Joe demanded.
Neither of us answered as we entered the office to the greetings of the secretary.
“What can I do for you boys?” she asked pleasantly, her heart skipping a beat at Edward and me.
“We need to speak to the principal,” I stated curtly.
“Of course.” She pressed the intercom button. “Edward Cullen, Jasper Hale, and Joe Speake are here to see you, Mr. Wilson.”
“Send them in,” we heard over the speaker.
She smiled pleasantly. “You may go in now.”
I nodded my thanks and led the way to his office.
“What can I do for you boys?” Mr. Wilson asked as we walked in.
“The nurse told you about Whitaker Hill, didn’t she?” I asked quietly.
“Yes. He wouldn’t say who—”
“This is the culprit.” I pointed back at Joe.
“Hmm. Is this true, Joe?”
Joe looked from the principal to me to Edward, then lowered his head. “Yes, sir.”
“And what do you think your punishment should be young man? Temporary expulsion? I do not tolerate fighting.”
“I don’t know, sir,” he mumbled.
“I think Whitaker should pick his punishment. He was the one attacked, after all,” Edward suggested. I nodded at him in gratitude.
“That sounds like a good plan,” Mr. Wilson responded, watching Joe fidget under his gaze. “I believe I will let him choose the punishment when he returns. For now, you’re suspended for three days.”
“But sir, I have a test tomorrow!” Joe protested.
“You should have thought of that before you started a fight.” Mr. Wilson turned to Edward and I. “Thank you for your help in bringing this to my attention. You two need to head back to class. As for you,” he pointed at Joe. “Take a seat. I’ll be notifying your parents momentarily.”
Joe huffed and glared at us, but did as he was told. Edward glanced at me before heading out the door. I followed not a moment later, reluctant to return to class.
I couldn’t focus in the rest of my classes. When it was time to finally leave school, I had to restrain myself from running out the door.
Of course, Edward had to be standing by my car. I could see Bella waiting on him in the Volvo, but his eyes were on mine, his emotions hidden from me.
“Carlisle wants to speak with you,” he said when I was standing in front of him.
“I’m going to see Whitaker,” I murmured, opening the door.
“That’s why he wants to speak with you. I suggest you go.”
“Fine.”
I slammed the door shut, though not very hard since I didn’t want to break the car, and drove towards the house.
Carlisle was waiting for me in the living room. Rosalie and Emmett had taken a sixth—or is it seventh?—honeymoon, this time to Alaska with the Denalis. They should be back soon, though I’m not sure when.
Esme was nowhere on the premises, so Carlisle and I were alone in the house.
“I wanted to have a word with you, Jasper,” he said kindly. “About Whitaker. And about you.”
I nodded and sat on the couch opposite him.
“Will you answer some questions?”
I nodded again.
“Whitaker’s nose was broken, which means there was probably a lot of blood. I don’t mean to sound callous, or to make you uncomfortable or upset, but your control has not been…complete, shall we say, around those who aren’t bleeding. How did you manage to keep control around Whitaker?”
I looked down at my hands. “I almost didn’t. I had to hold my breath because it smelled so good… But…I couldn’t hurt him.”
“And why is that?”
“Because… I just… I can’t.” I looked up, eyes pleading with him to understand. “If someone hurt Bella, how would Edward respond?”
“He would probably return the hurt to that person.”
“And if it was Edward who did the harm?”
Understanding flashed through his eyes and his emotions. “He would punish himself severely.”
“That’s why I can’t,” I replied lowly.
“Ah.” Happiness hit me in a large wave. Carlisle smiled softly at me and patted my shoulder. “I am glad someone could bring you out of your shell, Jasper. Very glad.”
“May I go see him?”
“Let him rest. I’m sure that is what he did the moment he arrived home. Let us talk for a while.”
I nodded and waited for his next question.
Please let me know what you think...if you want to, of course. :)
