Silence reigned in the hall as we stared at the king, and the king stared back. His eyes roved the group, resting briefly on a few of the women before stopping completely on me. He looked... pleased. Finally he stood.
"Welcome," he said, his deep voice reverberating around the massive hall. "It is good to see my people seeking refuge in Uru'Baen. Your village, unfortunately, was nearly destroyed when my soldiers came to visit. Your homes are gone, so you must stay here. Fear not, however, you will be taken care of. Your men will become part of my army, and if they cannot serve as soldiers they will serve in some other way. Those of you who are married will be taken back to your husbands and you will live here in the city. If you are not married, or past the age of childbearing, you will be given work here in the palace as serving women. As for those of you who are of marrying age, husbands will be found for you. You will want for nothing here."
The king sat again. A few of the women started to cry. My eyes burned with unshed tears, but I refused to cry. I knew now what had become of my parents; they had never made it out of the village. When the wails quieted to sniffles, the king gestured to two women standing in the shadows.
"Take the married women to the barracks. Get them back to their husbands," he told one. She curtsied and gathered the women to her according to the kings orders, bustling them out of the hall. "The women that are too old, take them and give them new clothes and rooms here. They are to become waiting women here in the palace. See to it they are cared for." The woman curtsied and gathered her group of women. When they left, only I and my three childhood friends remained.
My heart pounded, fear pulsed through my body. He gestured once more and three soldiers came forward.
'Only three?' I thought wildly. 'What is going to happen to whoever is left?' I had a sinking feeling I would find out firsthand, if the kings looks were anything to go by.
"I understand you are unmarried as yet."
The soldiers bowed. "Not yet sire," one said, a young handsome soldier. "I haven't yet met a girl to catch my fancy." The king chuckled.
"Well, today may be different." He gestured in our direction. "If you so choose, you may make one of these lovely young women your bride."
The soldier's gaze swept us, rested briefly on Marianna. And came to rest on me. He opened is mouth, took a breath.
"Not her, though, lad," the king interrupted with another chuckle. "There is something special in store for her."
I felt the blood drain from my face and my heart missed a beat. The soldier approached Marianna, held out his hand. She took it, her own hands shaking. The king smiled at them.
"You have my blessing," he said, raising his hands. "May you live long and bear many children." He spoke a few phrases in a strange language, his hands flashed a bright white, then nothing. Marianna left with her new husband, shooting me looks I couldn't decipher the whole way out. The process repeated twice more with the other two girls and soon it was just me standing before the king. His eyes burned into mine, held my terrified gaze. Then he took a step toward me, and another. And soon enough he was standing in front of me.
"You are a rare creature indeed aren't you," he muttered. "And with that hair, you are quite beautiful." He reached up a hand, went to stroke my cheek, and I flinched back. Memories of the previous night and what the captain had done to me were still all too fresh in my mind. The king dropped his hand, looked hard at me. He turned, his cape flaring angrily behind him. He called another soldier over to him.
'Where do they all keep coming from?!' I thought. I was too afraid to look away from Galbatorix long enough to search the shadows. I couldn't hear what was being said, but the soldier looked frightened. He bowed briefly, and fled the room. The king turned back to me.
"I can't have someone else touching what I have claimed as mine," Galbatorix said furiously. He turned to a small pedestal I hadn't noticed, ripped the cloth covering it. Light shafted from a window high up and spotlighted a pillow. But it was what rested on the pillow that held my attention.
It was a crown. Not just a crown, it was a beautiful full crown. Small diamonds were in a swirl pattern all the way around. The front of the crown peaked with a larger diamond at the point. It was the most incredible thing I had ever seen. And the most terrifying.
He spoke, turning my attention back to him. "Today, I gave dozens of villagers new homes. I gave them new jobs, new lives. I gave three of my loyal soldiers new brides." He turned to look at the people lining the walls. "I never ask for anything in return. I never take anything for myself. Today, however, I have decided to change that."
He lifted the crown from its nest on the pillow. My heart pounded as he walked toward me with it in his hands. Out of the corners of my eyes, I saw soldiers bowing and serving women curtsy. He stopped in front of me, the crown glittering in his large hands.
"You, Artemis, are MY new bride." And he placed the crown atop my head.

I also want to apologize for it taking so long to get chapters up. I'm remodeling my house, and between that and work, its really hard to get computer time long enough to get anything up. Thanks for bearing with me, and I promise to have a new chapter up very soon!
EDIT part 2: Yeah, I keep changing things lol. Sorry. If anyone caught it, I changed her name at the very end there. Explanations to come. Keep reading, all will be revealed!
