Chapter 3: A Hairy Situation
Dominic considered the boy for a moment, taking in his small, shivering form. This boy was not the one come to free him, just another pleasure seeker out to disprove the legend of the Beast of the Castle. The thought so enraged Dominic that he growled and snatched the boy up from his place on the ground, dragging him towards the dungeons.
The child immediately began whimpering and crying, but that made no difference to Dominic. Crying solved nothing; it only made men into fools—and whimpering was worse! He took the boy down and tossed him into a cell. "For your insolence, child, you will be my prisoner until the day you die…or until I see fit to release your sniveling hide."
"No! Please!" Jeffery begged, looking at the huge, hulking monster. "I'm sorry I—I didn't mean any harm—"
"Silence!" Dominic growled. "You will stay here until you rot," He growled, sweeping out of the dungeon.
Once alone, Jeffery began to weep. He never should have taken that stupid dare!

Back at the village, Thomas, Sven and Rudy began to get nervous as the sun made its path through the sky. It was getting late, close to sunset, and Jeffery hadn't returned yet.
"You don't think…" Thomas ventured.
"He should be back by now!" Sven cried, looking ill with worry.
"Not if the Beast's got him! There ain't no hope for him then!" Rudy interjected.
"Oh heavens above, his mum's gonna blame me for this!" Sven said, biting his lip. "I'll never get to see him again."
"You'll never get to see him again if we tell either, the Beast's probably eaten him already," Rudy said, quite unhelpfully. Sven just paled. "Still, there's a chance that if we tell—"
"No, no. Listen, here's what we'll do," Thomas said, pulling the two younger boys into a huddle. "We'll go home, pretend like this never happened, alright?"
"What?!" Sven cried, yanking away from the boy. "He's my best friend; I'm not going to pretend like he wasn't taken by that—that monster up there!"
"Hey boys," came a voice from behind the boys. The boys all winced as Jeffery's elder brother, Adrian, came around the corner. "It's dinner time—" Adrian stopped and looked around. "Where is Jeff? Wasn't he with you?"
"Uh—" Rudy started.
"About Jeffery, Adrian…" Sven began.
"We haven't seen him!" Thomas said, shaking his head. "He said he was going up to the castle to touch the knocker, but he hasn't come back. The boys and I were just discussing if we should go after him cause it was some time ago—"
"What?! You let him go off to the Beast's castle by himself?!" Adrian growled, glaring at the boys.
They all flinched and shrunk, for Adrian was quite big. He was one of the strongest, sturdiest men in the village, and often had many of the village girls vying for their attentions. That being said, a punch from the older man would really hurt.
"We're sorry, but he said something about proving himself to be a man," Thomas said again, looking up at the tall man.
Adrian just glared and looked up at the castle. "Of all the stupid—" he began, before immediately going home to gather up supplies and head for the Beast's castle. There was no telling what kind of vandals and hoodlums lived there now, and Jeffery could be in real danger.
~*~*~*~*~
There was not a day that went by that Adrian did not think of the large castle that overlooked his small village. As a boy he'd often dreamt of going up there and finding the red haired beauty he'd seen one day during the annual Grand Parade at the closing of their Harvest Week celebration. Adrian could never forget the fragile, proud beauty he'd seen sitting on horseback in the royal party—though at the time, young Adrian had not known that he was gazing at the Prince.
However, not long after that, the castle fell silent. There was nothing from their beloved Prince after that time. Not long after, rumors of a vicious Beast that had overtaken the castle began to circulate throughout the village, and after some time, the people forgot all about their ruler. The village no longer had the Harvest Week celebration, and the story of the Beast of the Castle had become just a story used to scare children.
But Adrian hadn't forgotten. As he began to make his way towards the Beast's castle, he recalled the pale beauty he'd seen so long ago, and a foolish thought entered his mind. Perhaps he could find out what really happened to the Prince? No, it was a foolish thought. His main concern was to make sure his baby brother was safe—and then kill him for coming up here alone.
It took Adrian some time to reach the Beast's castle, as night had begun to fall. Stumbling through thorny undergrowth and treacherous branches in the shoddy moonlight, Adrian soldiered on.
By the time he'd arrived at the monster's home, it was pitch black. Adrian could scarcely see his hand in front of his face, but he could see the dark steps of the castle ahead of him. Adjusting his satchel, and placing a hand on his pickax, he made his way for the great doors of the once opulent castle.
Stepping up on the platform, he approached the door, and using the broadside of his axe, he pounded on the wooden gateway.
"Open up, and release my brother!"
